Despite three millennia passing since it was written, Homer’s “Odyssey” remains one of the most timeless tales ever told by man. As such, director Uberto Pasolini wanted to explore that concept in “The Return,” an adaptation of the final third of the story that has no gods or monsters, only humanity.
“To me, it was important to keep the focus on storytelling about the human emotions, the psychology of the humans, the difficulty of being human, the difficulty of being a good human. And that would have been difficult if every action, or most actions, of our characters were influenced or managed by the gods, as Homer has it in his poem,” Pasolini said at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design.

In The Return, a soldier comes home after being away for many years at war, looking haggard and exhausted. His friends don’t recognize him, he has a difficult time readjusting to society and even his wife doesn’t seem to know who he is. It seems a fairly familiar story, except that the main characters’ names are Odysseus and Penelope, the setting is the island of Ithaca and the war took place in Troy. Yes, this film — receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before a theatrical release later this year — is an adaptation of a section of Homer’s The Odyssey.

Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey are foundational works of Western literature, yet they are seldom adapted for the screen today. The Iliad was last made into a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster in 2004’s “Troy.” But you must go back to 1954 to find an equivalent for The Odyssey in “Ulysses” starring Kirk Douglas. Since then, The Odyssey has had some notable television adaptations: 1968’s Italian production “Odissea” (with Bekim Fehmiu and Irene Papas), 1997’s American production “The Odyssey” and 2013’s French production “Odysseus”.

When most people picture the classic tale of The Odyssey, what comes to mind are legendary beasts, miracles performed by gods, and fantastical voyages across the sea. But Uberto Pasolini’s new film The Return sets sail on a different course. It home sin only on the part of Homer’s epic poem where Odysseus at last reaches his destination of Ithaca after twenty years away at war.
We learn Odysseus fought bravely alongside other Greeks to vanquish the city of Troy. But the journey home proved an even greater challenge, with harrowing encounters with monsters and deities that delayed his family’s reunion for years more. Now at last a beaten man washes ashore on the island shores he once knew as king. But the kingdom he left behind has fallen into disarray.
The long-waiting and loyal Penelope struggles to govern in his absence, her rule continually under threat...

Toronto film festival: The English Patient co-stars come together for Uberto Pasolini’s new take on The Odyssey, a handsome misfire
There are no sirens, cyclops or six-headed monsters in Uberto Pasolini’s adaptation of The Odyssey. His film, The Return, skips most of the great big adventure at sea from Homer’s epic poem, which was previously translated to the big screen in 1955’s Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas.
Instead, Pasolini’s handsome, sombre and meditative take homes in on Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche’s faces. The camera loves them. It barely leaves them, watching for the light from the setting sun or crackling fire as it searches across their weary brows or sullen cheeks, or when a painterly circle of smoke orbits their heads like thrones.

The true pits of ’90s nostalgia are maybe here, as we’re in the year 2024 arriving at an attempt to hype an English Patient reunion. Yes, that’ll be music to the ears of people who loved a Miramax heyday including that notoriously lugubrious Best Picture winner. Certainly there’s nothing wrong with seeing Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche acting together again, the capable thespians they both are, but when the content of their reunion draws specific memories of a certain kind of dull prestige-filmmaking period, you’re deeply in trouble.
The film in question, The Return, serves as an adaptation of the last third of Homer’s Odyssey, where Odysseus (Fiennes) is long past the high-seas adventure part of his journey and rather stuck in a kind of limbo in his homeland of Ithaca; returned but not reclaimed. His queen Penelope (Binoche) is being pressured by followers to pick a new king,...

When he introduced the world premiere of “The Return” at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday night, director Uberto Pasolini pointed out that nobody has made a film adaptation of Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” since 1955, when Italian director Mario Camerini made a version with Kirk Douglas as Odysseus. He skipped over a couple of other versions as well as works by Theo Angelopoulos and the Coen brothers that borrowed elements from Homer’s tale, but the point remains: One of the first great works of Western literature is not marketable IP these days.
But it’s still a hell of a tale, as “The Return” proves. The film leaves out the first two-thirds of the book, the part that includes the cyclops and the Sirens and the six-headed sea monster and lots of meddling by the gods. Instead, it sticks with the final section in which Odysseus returns...

Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche reunited over a quarter-century after they starred together in the Oscar-winning The English Patient to star in the classical drama The Return, which had a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday night.
While Fiennes was not on hand at TIFF owing to acting duties back in Britain, Binoche paid tribute to her co-star as she insisted they share similar qualities, despite coming from different countries and backgrounds.
“I always love working with him (Fiennes), because there’s so much rhythm, around the weight of words, the weight of silence and still is. It’s very genuine,” Binoche told the Roy Thomson Hall audience after receiving a short, yet brisk standing ovation when The Return concluded.
“And I feel very much like, even though we’re husband and wife in this film, we’re like brother and sister. We’re very much alike,...

Juliette Binoche says it was "joyful" to reunite on screen with Ralph Fiennes, 28 years after 'The English Patient'.The pair have teamed up for 'The Return', Uberto Pasolini’s retelling of Homer’s 'Odyssey' and Juliette jumped at the chance to work with her former co-star again. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "We remained friends, throughout all those years, since 'The English Patient'. So it was just joyful to be able to reconnect onscreen. Ralph is not lying down this time, but I think Penelope is a kind of nurse, for being so patient of this ‘new patient’ who comes back to Ithaca.”Ralph plays Odysseus, who arrives home to his kingdom Ithaca after 20 years away at war, to find his wife, Penelope (Binoche) a prisoner in her own home, fighting off suitors who want to marry her and rule Ithaca.Ralph said: "Friendship isn’t always about working together.

It’s been nearly 30 years since Juliette Binoche peeled a plum and slipped it into Ralph Fiennes’ mouth.
That’s the first scene between the actors in The English Patient (1996), with Binoche playing Hana, the nurse to Fiennes’ titular character, a severely burned and bedridden patient with a mysterious past. The rest, of course, is history. Anthony Minghella’s literary epic became a cinematic phenomenon, earning $232 million worldwide — still the highest-grossing film in the history of Miramax — and dominated the 1997 Academy Awards, taking nine Oscars, including those for best film and for Binoche, best supporting actress. Seinfeld even did an episode about the movie.
Now, Binoche and Fiennes have finally reunited onscreen in The Return, which has its world premiere on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Toronto Film Festival (Bleecker Street is releasing across North America on Dec. 6, with HanWay Films selling the movie worldwide). Star Trek has always been about boldly going, so it’s no surprise the franchise quickly moved beyond television sets. Even before the series jumped to the big screen, Star Trek expanded into the world of paperbacks, first with novelizations of Original Series and Animated Series episodes and then with original stories created for the page.
Starting with 1970’s Spock Must Die! by James Blish, the novels gave fans a chance to check in on the continuing missions of their favorite crews and characters. As of this writing, over 850 novels have made it to print, encompassing not only every series except Lower Decks but also spin-off series about totally new characters, such as Captain Calhoun of the USS Excalibur.
With so many options, the world of Trek books can get overwhelming. But these entries are a great place to start. Here are the best Star Trek novels ever written.

It’s been a wild ride for “Scavengers Reign,” the critically acclaimed adult animated sci-fi series, which was canceled by Max in May and got a second chance at Netflix on May 31, where it solidified its cult standing just in time for Emmy voters to make it the dark horse in the Outstanding Animated Program race. However, we’ll have to see if it’s enough to greenlight a Season 2 from creators Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner.
But then the whole point of “Scavengers Reign” was to break free from every other adult animated series. It’s a mind-bending sci-fi adventure about a deep space freighter crew stranded on the beautiful yet deadly alien planet, Vesta, whose intertwining ecosystems of exotic flora and fauna pull them into the organic machinery alongside the imaginative creatures.

Any “Twin Peaks” fan worth their garmonbozia won’t forget the tragic fate of Josie Packard. In the Lesli Linka Glatter-directed Episode 16 of Season 2, the Packard Sawmill owner (Joan Chen) dies suddenly after a standoff with FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), her soul appearing to then live inside a wooden drawer knob in a room at the Great Northern hotel.
It’s an unforgettable image, but a bit of a sad, anticlimactic one for Chen, who at that point wanted to be written out of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s show to pursue other opportunities.

The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival announced its full lineup of Galas and Special Presentations today in what is a complete embarrassment of riches as the event blasts off after last year’s actors strike with 29 titles having rights for sale.
Among those movies making their world premieres is the Angelina Jolie-directed war drama Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. There’s also Mike Leigh’s first movie in six years, Hard Truths, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, which is billed as an “ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”
Gia Coppola has the drama The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd, which follows a seasoned stage dancer who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.

Even if David Lynch hasn’t directed for film or television since the release of his 2017 magnum opus “Twin Peaks: The Return,” he’s staying busy with new creative projects. Next up is “Cellophane Memories,” a new collaborative album he wrote and performed alongside “The Return” star Chyrstabell, which is set to be released this August.
The two artists debuted their debut single, “Sublime Eternal Love” in June, which was accompanied by a video directed by Lynch. Now, they’ve rolled out a second track from the album, “The Answers to the Questions,” that features another Lynch video. The animated video features a black-and-white room that will remind many fans of the Fireman’s house from “The Return,” while Chrystabell is portrayed as a lounge singer that provides the video’s sole source of color.
A press release announcing the album stated that the inspiration for the project “comes from...

David Lynch is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s biggest visionaries and an author who will forever be remembered in history among the names that have changed movies for the better. The filmmaker has left us with numerous memorable works such as Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive, but his arguably best and most famous work is the Twin Peaks television series, which became a cult classic of the mystery genre. He is known for his unique and surreal, sometimes quirky and weird, approach to his stories, and that is something that his fans love about him.
Lynch has been an uncompromising figure in the world of cinema and it’s been a while now that we’ve seen a new project of his come to light, although a recent interview we reported on indicated that Lynch had not given up on cinema. Today, in his unique way,...

Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle’s group COO and CEO for continental Europe, is understandably proud that the company has landed five titles in the Cannes official selection, three of which – “Kinds of Kindness,” by Yorgos Lanthimos, Paolo Sorrentino’s “Parthenope” and Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov’s “Limonov” — are in competition.
The other two are Rungano Nyoni’s “On becoming a Guinea Fowl” and Ariane Labed’s “September Says,” both in Un Certain Regard.
“The incredible diversity of these titles – even in terms of the geographies and cultures they’re based on – is exactly the result of our strategy,” he tells Variety.
Scrosati, who is the architect of Fremantle’s expansion under a business model comprising a cluster of companies across Europe and beyond, discussed how he’s navigating a changing marketplace ahead of Cannes.

The filmmaker has left us with numerous memorable works such as Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive, but his arguably best and most famous work is the Twin Peaks television series, which became a cult classic of the mystery genre. Some years ago, the series returned with an epic third season which, in Lynch’s usual manner, ended on a cliffhanger. And while the director has said that there are some “calls” for another season, no work has been done.
But, producer Sabrina Sutherland recently had a talk with the guys at Tulpa Forums and has agreed to answer fan questions about Twin Peaks, as well as her other collaborations with Lynch, as she has worked with him on several projects. David Lynch hasn’t taken on a feature film or TV project since releasing his groundbreaking “Twin Peaks: The Return” in 2017, but it hasn’t been for lack of trying. First, it was reported back in April that Netflix rejected his pitch for an animated film called “Snootworld.” And now his longtime producer Sabrina Sutherland has shed some light on “Unrecorded Night,” his planned Netflix series that was scrapped during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Loyal Lynch fans will recall that rumors began to circulate in 2020 that the auteur was planning to direct a new series that was developed under the working titles “Wisteria” and “Unrecorded Night.” Many regular Lynch collaborators, including Kyle MacLachlan and Mark Frost, went on to cryptically post images of wisteria flowers on their social media accounts, fueling speculation that Lynch was getting the band back together. Some even speculated that the show would be a Texas-set series...

Seven years after the premiere of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and the third season of David Lynch’s small-town-turned-cosmic nightmare is still reverberating for a new generation of filmmakers.
So it’s apt that Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a suburban lucid dream of a movie about how the media we consume can then consume us, feels like the first film to truly capture the dread and dissonance of Lynch’s reinvention — a series that was itself a comment on how you can truly never go home again, and how rose-colored memories become warped and monstrous by the passage of time.
“I Saw the TV Glow” follows Owen (Justice Smith), a gloomy New Jersey teen obsessed with a YA TV series called “The Pink Opaque,” about two physically apart teen girls who share a psychic connection that could help them defeat a moon-faced monster called Mr. Melancholy.

For any “Twin Peaks” fan whose head is still spinning after Part 18 of “The Return,” consider Mark Frost’s new novel, “Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier,” an essential purchase. The new book is considered canon and helps fill in the 25-year gap between the Season 2 finale and Showtime’s event series. Frost provides some of the answers David Lynch did not, such as what actually happened to Audrey Horne, and the co-writer even goes a step further in setting the final chapter of his book after the events of Part 18.
David Lynch ended “Twin Peaks: The Return” with a baffling final hour that expanded the mythology of the show by raising a hundred new questions. [Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Twin Peaks: The Return” up until the finale.]
With only two hours left in “Twin Peaks,” there are still a lot of questions to be answered. Of course, anyone who’s seen all 16 hours of “The Return” knows it’s a fool’s errand to expect explicit clarification on everything. Some events are random. Some illustrate a tonal shift. Some are purposefully ambiguous.
But there are a few pertinent tidbits which could benefit from further exploration. Below, IndieWire has collected a batch of questions we wouldn’t mind having David Lynch and Mark Frost address — via their expressionist ideals — in what everyone expects to be a damn good finale.
Why is Laura “the one”?
In one message for Hawk (Michael Horse), the Log Lady (Catherine Coulson) said, “Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not.
