While Glenn Close has taken up a lot of the conversation surrounding overdue Oscars in recent years, another perennial bridesmaid is hoping to finally win an Oscar of her own. Songwriter Diane Warren is once again nominated for Best Original Song, for “Io Si (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” sharing writing credit with the song’s vocalist, Laura Pausini. Warren has now racked up a whopping 12 nominations but has yet to actually take home the little gold man, even while finding success at other awards shows like the Grammys and the Emmys. She won a Golden Globe last month for “Io Si,” which might just put her on the path to winning the Oscar once and for all.
Warren’s 11 previous Oscar losses were: “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from “Mannequin” (1987); “Because You Loved Me” from “Up Close and Personal” (1996); “How Do I Live” from “Con Air” (1997); “I Don...

“Insert song here” was the task for “Eurovision Song Contest” executive music producer Savan Kotecha at various points in the script of the Will Ferrell musical comedy that Netflix released last year. Kotecha, his fellow recording engineer Fat Max Gsus and their fellow lyricist Rickard Göransson are nominated now at the Oscars in the Best Original Song category for the climactic “Husavik” ballad. Kotecha explains in their exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “The challenge with this one was, really, we were just going off of what the character — what she wanted to say,” referencing Rachel McAdams‘ character from the titular band Fire Saga.

The 63rd annual Grammy Award nominations were unveiled this morning, and since the music industry’s biggest award show is on a different timetable than awards shows like the Oscars or the Emmys, it can often feel like the Grammys are extremely far behind when it comes to pop culture. If you ever thought you had a chance to win big back in the day with McDonald’s Monopoly million dollar contest, you wasted a lot of time eating french fries. The new documentary series “McMillion$” coming to HBO uncovers the 12-year long gangster scam that fixed the game.
“McMillion$” is a six-part documentary series that will make its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and then premiere on HBO on Feb. 3. It examines the $24 million worth of fraud that corrupted the McDonald’s Monopoly game between 1989 and 2001, in which there were “almost no legitimate million dollar winners” in the contest.
The FBI got involved and found that a gangster by the name of “Uncle Jerry” would steal winning tickets for prizes and would sell them to undeserving winners. It led to a sting operation as tasty as a Big Mac that involved dirty dealings by ex-cons, mafia mobsters and of course Ronald McDonald.

Strap on your duster jackets, folks, because it looks like Lionsgate is moving forward with their adaptation of the space western video game, Borderlands. According to THR, the studio has hired Aaron Berg to pen the script for the flick. If you haven't heard of Mr. Berg, there's a reason for it. The writer is a relatively new talent who was hired to write G.I. Joe 3 around this time last year. His only other credit is that of a spec script called Section 6, which was purchased by Universal back in 2013.
Obviously this is an early step of many in the entire film production process. With films like Warcraft and Assassin's Creed on the horizon, Lionsgate is no doubt getting its ducks in a row for its own video game property in hopes that the aforementioned films will find a big audience. Back when the studio first nabbed the rights to the video game,...

It's a catch up week at the movies for kids and teens, and Kpf Movie Star Movie Critic Katherine McNamara (Contest, Girl vs. Monster) recommends the historical PG-13 film Belle:
"You can't choose your family. Dido certainly learned that the hard way in Belle, the story of a mixed race girl growing up in an all white family in England in the 1700s. This film explores the complicated social structure at the time and the vast discrimination and judgment that could be passed on a person based on their social status, their birth order, or even the color of their skin. This story is wonderfully chock full of romance, family conflict, and the pomp and circumstance present in that era. Standout performances include Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the title character, Sam Reid as John Davinier, and Tom Felton (of Harry Potter fame) as James Ashford. The wardrobe, hair, and makeup...

"Every Briar Rose has its thorn - Angelina Jolie is both as the title character in Maleficent, the latest retelling of the original "Sleeping Beauty" story. In this retelling, the formerly evil Maleficent is not all that malevolent. The special effects were stunning and quite well done in the film. Jolie was completely transformed into the dark yet beautiful fairy. Who didn't see Godzilla last weekend? The film opened to a whopping $94 million dollars making it the biggest opening of the summer, past Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But, is it worth your money? Well, it depends on what you want out of a movie according to Kpf's Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest), who point out the film's highlights:
"In the 2014 version of Godzilla, the monster fights to right the forces of nature, and there's little the human race can do with gigantic adversaries such as the Muto and Godzilla stomping all over their cities. The action sequences and special effects in the film are fantastic. Also, the music and sound effects flowed with the movie flawlessly, helping to pull the audience into the story and the action even more. Standout performances include Bryan Cranston as Joe Brody and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Ford Brody.

Transcendence dives into some heady ideas, but do they make sense? KidsPickFlicks Movie Star Movie Crix Katherine McNamara (Contest) and Joel Courtney (Super 8) say it's a film worth exploring:
"To what limits should technology stretch? Transcendence does not answer this question, it merely begins to explore its possibilities. The film follows the story of Will and Evelyn Caster as their journey to creating artificial intelligence changes suddenly when Will is fatally wounded by an intelligence resistance group. Stunning visual effects show a myriad of futuristic technologies made possible in this world including plants being brought to life with nano-technology. These phenomena were made believable by the performances of Paul Bettanny and Rebecca Hall as they saw their possibilities for healing and destruction. Johnny Depp also delivered a fantastic performance as Will Caster in his ever-changing altered state of consciousness, if you will. Some strong language is used in the film,...

Just released is Heaven is for Real, and KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say it's a film that will get you thinking:

The film follows the story of the Burpo family, headed by Renaissance man Todd, the towns pastor, wrestling coach, fireman, and garage door repairman, as they struggle with questions of life, death, faith, family, and community surrounding the near death of their son Colton. The cast of this film was quite brilliant creating an ensemble that had a genuine thread of connectivity and community between each character.

It's Easter weekend so no better time to see the story behind the holiday! KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) review Son of God:
"Son of God stayed true to the storyline of the Bible even to the point of being painfully realistic during Herod's slaughter of the innocents and during the Crucifixion. One difference between Son of God and other biblical films is that this one begins with the creation account in Genesis and ends with the book of Revelation. The cinematography is quite majestic creating a beautiful film and a feeling of reverence toward the story being presented. One of the most outstanding performances came from Diogo Morgado as Jesus. The Captan America sequel is here - and already Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the biggest movie of 2014. Does it live up to the other Avengers films? KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say oh-yeah:
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a character-driven action movie perfect for Marvel's first venture in 2014. Some of our favorite characters return as fantastic as ever including Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and, of course, Chris Evans as Captain America. There is never a dull moment as the film has a steady flow of action from beginning to end. The amazing fight sequences certainly do not disappoint, and the computer graphics were visually stunning. This is a great film for the family but may be a bit intense for younger children. 5 stars"

Everyone's talking about Divergent, but is it worth seeing? KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) give the lowdown:
"Based on the first installment of the best selling book series, Divergent is set in a dystopian Chicago where citizens are must choose one of five groups based on what they feel the most important trait is for a person to possess: kindness (Amity), honesty (Candor), intelligence (Erudite), selflessness (Abnegation), or bravery (Dauntless). What if a person displays more than one of these traits? They are the Divergent. The film is a cautionary tale about how ultimate power can corrupt even the best of intentions. Mr. Peabody & Sherman has flown through time: it was a cartoon back when your grandparents were kids and now it's landed in 2014 so you can enjoy them, too. But, does the concept still work? Check out KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) have to say:
"Hop inside the Wabac and fasten your seatbelt for a very endearing retelling of a beloved classic cartoon. The film brings back the charming Mr. Peabody, a genius dog who invents time travel to teach his adoptive son, Sherman, about the past. Trying to impress a new friend, Sherman goes back in time for some fun, but makes too much of a mark on history, forcing Mr. Peabody to fix it before the rip in time is irreparable. The movie is quite fast paced with constant jokes for adults and kids alike. With an all-star cast featuring Ty Burrell,...

Update: The winner of the Pick Actress Award acted the heck out of some difficult subject matter. French-Canadian actress Sophie Nélisse is mesmerizing throughout The Book Thief, which deals with a once-illiterate girl who grows up in Nazi-run Germany and comes to realize that if her country "wins" the war, no one wins. Pretty tricky stuff - Congrats, Sophie!

You may already know "Need for Speed" the video game and now it's time to get familiar with Need for Speed the movie. But is it more than just a showcase for cool cars? Check out KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) review:
"Need for Speed zooms into theaters this weekend and is sure to be a big hit. This film follows the story of Tobey Marshall, played quite impressively by Aaron Paul, an amateur racer with potential and drive (pardon the pun) to make it to the proverbial big leagues. When disaster strikes, he must rebuild his life from the ground up in order to clear his name and drive his dream race - the prestigious De Leon. Pompeii is ambitious: it strives to be an epic, sword-and-sandal action thriller romance in a disaster movie that is also historically-accurate! KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) evaluate if director Paul W.S. Anderson pulls it off:
"Pompeii, a mashup between Titanic and Gladiator, adds itself to the list of unusual Valentine's Day movies in the box office this year. It is indeed a love story, two people destined for each other but prohibited by social class, only interrupted by gladiator tournament fighting and blood. The performances of Kit Harington, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Emily Browning were fantastic and really draw the audience into the film. The special effects were stunning, showing how Mt. Vesuvius' colossal 79 Ad eruption utterly destroyed the beautiful city of Pompeii in less than 24 hours. While the storyline was predictable at times, the movie was still enjoyable. Labor Day looks like a movie for grown ups but KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) absolutely loved it, unexpectedly finding themselves on the edge of their seats!
"Labor Day is not at all reminiscent of the relaxing holiday that gives it its title. The film is quite intense, quickly transforming from a thriller about an escaped convict to an entrapuring love story. This film pushes the emotional boundaries of both the actors and the audience ranging from love, hurt, betrayal, depression, murder, and ultimately to hope. Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin give award worthy performances as two broken people who were previously scarred by love and thought they would be alone forever but find each other instead. Also, Gattlin Griffiths did a phenomenal job and held his own with these masters of their craft as Henry, Winslet's son. We highly recommend this film.

Great romantic movies always stay great, but sometimes need a little updating. Endless Love's tweaks include turning the teen romance into a movie teens can see, it's rated PG-13 (the 1981 original was R). KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) rate Endless Love a Pick, but barely:
"Endless Love follows the story of Jade Butterfield (Gabriella Wilde) who, after losing her older brother Chris to cancer, isolates herself by dropping out of any social life. That is, until she meets David Elliot (Alex Pettyfer). Overnight, he turns her entire world upside down, opening her eyes over the everything she missed in the past four years in one summer. Bruce Greenwood gives a great performance as an over-bearing and controlling father looking who only has his interests at heart. The supporting cast of Rhys Wakefield (playing Jade's older brother) and Dayo Okeniyi (David's best friend) steal the show.

RoboCop is a movie - if not a punch line - from 1987. KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) rate RoboCop right on the line between Pick and Ick:
"In the year 2028, OmniCorp has a monopoly on robotic technology. Outside of the USA, their robots are being used for police force and military operations. OmniCorp builds a machine-man hybrid (Joel Kinnaman) in order to bring robotic peacekeepers to the USA. Although the film is set 14 years in the future, the movie presents several current issues: the use of unmanned drones, questions of personal liberty vs. safety, and cable news being passed off as unbiased reporting. Abbie Cornish gives a fantastic performance as a wife and mother whose life is spinning out of control as she struggles to support her critically injured husband. Samuel L. Jackson gives a tremendous performance the type of charismatic and...

The Monuments Men is a true story about the world's greatest treasure hunt: taking back stolen artwork from the Nazis! Here's the thing, though, will kids like it? KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say it's a Pick, but it's not for everyone:
"The Monuments Men is a fantastic film about a team of art authorities who were ordered to find art the Nazis stole during World War II. It follows these seven men who are the farthest thing from soldiers on their crusade to find these masterpieces and return them to their original owners before the Nazi's destroy them for good. Not only is the plot of this film incredible, the cast is just as top notch. With stars including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett, it is no surprise the ensemble cast of this film delivered a stunning performance.

What pleases movie critics and what pleases kids rarely come together, but somehow The Lego Movie has managed to please everybody! KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) explain why a movie about plastic interlocking bricks is a Pick:
"The Lego Movie blew our expectations out of the picture. We know what you're thinking...A movie based on a line of children's toys with a trivial plot, if any? Yes!!! This film is thoroughly entertaining with jokes for all ages. Indeed, it is very reminiscent of the magic and childlike joy of another film we all know and love that is also about a famous toy or two... Vampire Academy bring the action-packed teen novels to life. KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say the film is a Pick:
"One thing is for sure: Vampire Academy certainly does Not suck. Fans of the book will surely love this adaptation of the story. The film truly brought the characters to life and highlighted the best qualities of the book providing audiences a option with a bit of a dark side this Valentine's Day. The ensemble cast was incredible! Zoey Deutch gave a great performance with a balance of strength and vulnerability. Another noted performance was by Danila Kozlovsky, it will be interesting to see how the character develops throughout the series. Probably the greatest standout in the film was Sarah Hyland's dynamic performance as Natalie. The soundtrack was seamlessly integrated into the story and the set design was very well done.

We learned in Contest that Katherine McNamara knows a lot about "Chatter" so it's perfect that she's going to star with Laura Marano "Austin & Ally" in a movie about debate! Kat will play Rose who befriends Amy (Marano) in the world of high school debate club. Kat and Laura are known to be reallly funny but A Sort of Homecoming, is reportedly a drama. The girls are off to Louisiana to star filming before Kat starts shooting her new MTV series "Happyland."
The role of "debater" is a great fit for Kat who is amazing with words - she wrote the song "Chatter" for Contest (which Cartoon Network used as the promo music when the movie aired on it), she graduated high school and college already (!) and she's still a teenager And, of course our personal favorite, she's KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critic! I, Frankenstein brings the story of Victor Frankenstein's monster into a modern dystopian world. KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say, well, the music was pretty good:
"The legend lives again in this new continuation of the story of Dr. Frankenstein's famous creation. This time, the creature is not being hunted by angry townspeople with pitchforks but by an army of demons planning to overthrow the human race. The gargoyles however are on the side of good as a legion to fight for the survival of the world as we know it. The special effects in this film were astounding and kept bloodiness to a minimum. One of the best performances in the film came from Yvonne Strahovski as a scientist caught in the middle of this war of the shadows. Probably the best part of this film was the soundtrack. A score...

It's Chris Pine's turn to play super agent Jack Ryan - Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck and Harrison Ford have played the character over the last two decades. How does he, and the movie, measure up? KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say Pine delivers and this Jack Ryan flick has something action films don't always have: a great story.
"Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was a phenomenal movie. This film was very plot driven for an action flick. The use of only a few key special effects made Shadow Recruit more compelling than most other "bang 'em up" films. The scoring in the movie was quite good as well and added a great deal of suspense and drama to the piece. The cast was truly spectacular. Chris Pine was an agent caught between his love of country and the love of his life played beautifully by Kiera Knightley.

Ride Along isn't really a movie made for kids, but a Kevin Hart comedy with Ice Cube and "Haunted Hathaways" Benjamin Flores Jr. - well, that's enough to get us interested! KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say, as advertised, Ride Along is Really Funny, but for younger kids, well, it's not.
"Ice Cube and Kevin Hart make a great team in the action-packed comedy Ride Along. This bad-cop/crazy-cop duo takes on a major crime lord on the streets of Atlanta, allowing Ben (Kevin Hart) to prove that he is worthy of James' (Ice Cube) sister, Angela (Tika Sumpter). The comedy in this movie is top notch! The perfect blend of a comedy and an action film, Ride Along keeps you laughing on the edge of your seat! However, the language and subject matter of some scenes may is a bit mature for younger audiences.

The premiere of The Nut Job was, indeed, nutty with a pug, a groundhog, a rats (!), and other wildlife walking the red carpet alongside stars Will Arnett and Katherine Heigl. Find out what the nuttiest thing Katherine Heigl and her daughter Naleigh do and who Will Arnett would take on a heist (his answer is Really Good!):
The Nut Job opens this Friday, Jan. 17. Read Kat McNamara, Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Riley's reviews of The Nut Job Here (and after you see the movie, come back to tell us what You think!).

The Nut Job is the first kids movie of the year, but is it worth seeing? KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say yes!
"The Nut Job is surely a heist to remember. The characters make use of everything from dog whistles to dynamite as they try to pull of the biggest nut heist the park has ever seen. Unlikely heroes rise to the challenge, friendships are forged, tested, and broken, and justice (as well as a huge serving of nutty deliciousness) is served. The all star cast including Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, and Liam Neeson make the characters come alive. Some outstanding performances also came from Brendan Fraser as Grayson, a squirrel with an over-inflated self image; and Maya Rudolph as Precious, an adorably precocious pug who is ready to lick anyone who dares to come close enough! The action never stops in this film,...
Not only is the main character, Tommy, in the family drama ‘Contest,’ which is now available on VOD and DVD, determined to finally become accepted by his classmates at his high school, but first-time writer-director Anthony Joseph-Giunta is also working to leave his mark among the filmmaking community. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug remains the No. 1 movie in the U.S., but is it worth seeing? KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say yes!
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was a fantastic movie for anyone looking for nonstop excitement and a great plot. The Thorin Company is on it's way to The Lonely Mountain, being chased by an Orc pack and an unknown darker evil constantly growing stronger. It was an action packed film that keeps audience hearts racing the whole time through. The plot was thick with twists, turns, and subplots but not too hard to be followed. We can honestly recommend this movie and look forward to the third and last part of the trilogy. 4.5 stars"

Contest star Katherine McNamara was one of a handful of stars given a golden Purple ticket to attend the premiere of Justin Bieber's Believe. Here is Kat's Movie Star Movie Critic Movie Review:
"One thing is for sure, all around the world, Beliebers are going to be wishing Justin was their "boyfriend" after seeing his new docu-film Believe. The film follows the story of the next chapter of his career surrounding his album that shares the film's title and the subsequent Believe Tour. It addresses several big media stories including his run-ins with paparazzi and his status as a troublemaker and gives the opportunity to tell his side of the story and explain his actions. It also gives a behind the scenes look at the creation of the album and the tour giving insight to the songs and credit to Bieber as an artist. His musical growth is apparent in...

Nearly all of the main characters on CBS’s The Good Wife are walking around with some kind of secret past (or present). But who knew that Mary Beth Peil, the actress portraying Peter Florrick’s mother, Jackie, had a secret past, off-screen? Paste had the pleasure of speaking with Peil about her new film Contest—in which she plays the supportive grandmother of a bullied teenage boy—and the talented performer opened up about her fascinating life as an opera singer-turned-television actress....

Welcome back for another installment from Brady Riann, Moviefone's teenage correspondent. You'll get reviews and insights into the world of film -- from a teenage perspective.
This week marks the DVD release of Cartoon Network's live action teen-aged comedy "Contest" starring Danny Flaherty as bullied high school student Tommy Dolen and Kenton Duty as his swim cap sporting arch-nemesis Matt Prylek. The film also stars Mary Beth Peil, Katherine McNamara, and even "Phil of the Future" star Raviv Ullman has a short role as the cooking game show host.
The film revolves around the bullied Tommy dealing with an interesting set of emotional and physical obstacles he must overcome. One of those obstacles is Matt, a swimming star with his own set of issues -- issues he decides to take out on Tommy. But after the two have the confrontation to end all confrontations, they must put their differences aside...

Contest is a movie about a boy and the school bully forming a team in order to win a cooking contest. Kenton Duty from "Shake It Up!" plays Matt Prylek, the school bully. I had the chance to interview him over the phone and we talked about his past bullying experiences, his character in Contest, and his music career ahead of him!
Q: I read in an article that you were bullied for being "different." How did you feel at the time you were bullied and how did you deal with that?
Kd: Bullying never feels good at the time. I was sort of a small guy up until recently. I was always small in stature, and that got me picked on, especially in the sport arenas. I also have food allergies, and people thought it was fun to pick on me for that.
