Exclusive: Indie distributor The Film Arcade has acquired North American rights to distribute Small Time, written and directed by Niav Conty, and exec-produced by Oscar nominee Oren Moverman (The Messenger).
The film stars Audrey Grace Marshall (The Flight Attendant) Holter Graham (Maximum Overdrive) and Kevin Loreque (Pose).

The director speaks for the first time about the horrific event from his childhood that inspired his new TV drama The Virtues
I’ve interviewed director Shane Meadows a few times now, and it’s always been fun. He’s an entertaining person to spend an hour with: enthusiastic, emotional, funny, a natural talker. Plus there’s lots to talk about, as his work is great. From his first features, Small Time (1996) and A Room For Romeo Brass (1999), through Dead Man’s Shoes, into 2006’s This Is England and the three TV spin-off series that came out of that, as well as his Stone Roses comeback documentary, Made of Stone, Meadows makes brilliant British films and telly. He calls himself “kitchen sink”, but he’s a rare combination of artist, storyteller and near-documentarian who often uses his life growing up in Uttoxeter in Staffordshire as inspiration. Comic Book Reviews: Marvel Round-Up Week 07-20-2016
After a nice vacation overseas, I’ve returned to see how much has Civil War II invaded the nice worlds of my favorite comic book series! In some cases it’s bad! And in others, not so bad. Regardless, I know a bunch of big changes are coming to the Marvel U, and Civil War II is just the tip of the iceberg. So sit back, read some reviews and see if anything strikes your fancy this week!

The upcoming weekend boasts an onslaught of new Specialty titles vying for audiences. In all likelihood, however, many will have a short big screen life as the fall’s awards contenders ramp up and crowd others out. Five of this week’s dozen-plus newcomers are spotlighted here with Fox Searchlight’s The Drop edging on a wide release. The feature starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and James Gandolfini will bow in over 800 theaters. TWC’s The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby also joins the fray with a platform release. The film also has two accompanying titles told from the perspective of its two main characters, which will be released in more limited runs in October. Magnolia will open its thriller Honeymoon in a day and date release while Dada Films’ Swearnet: The Movie breaks a movie record with the most F-bombs ever. And Cohen Media Group’s My Old Lady bowed Wednesday in limited release.

A little over a year ago, the entertainment world mourned the passing of prolific author Elmore Leonard, a writer well-known in both literature and motion picture circles. His earliest works were in the Western genre and beginning in the late 1950′s many were filmed (his short story 3:10 To Yuma was made twice!). In the next decade Leonard switched genres and soon became known as one of the great creators of gritty crime thrillers. And Hollywood scooped these up for the screen, perhaps more so than the “oaters”. In the 90′s many celebrated young directors discovered his work and several critical (if not always box office) hits were released. 1998 saw Steven Soderbergh’s take on Out Of Sight following Quentin Tarantino’s spin on “Rum Punch” titled Jackie Brown the previous year. Both films even shared a Leonard character, Michael Keaton as Atf agent Ray Nicholette. This weekend sees a...

Batteries aren't required for the beloved games of Garcelle Beauvais' 6-year-old twins, Jax and Jaid. This summer, Beauvais intends to keep her sons active, and has indoor activities at the ready so rain won't dampen their school vacation play dates. Joel Surnow's directorial debut, “Small Time,” drives into select theaters Friday. The sweet, coming-of-age tale stars Christopher Meloni as a struggling car salesman and Devon Bostick as his son, who is eager to join the family business despite his mother's wishes that he attend college. Dean Norris of “Breaking Bad” fame co-stars as Meloni's business partner and a surrogate uncle of sorts to Bostick's character. Surnow is a veteran TV scribe who got his start writing for “St. Elsewhere,” “The Equalizer,” “Miami Vice,” “The Commish” and “La Femme Nikita.” More recently, he's known for executive producing “The Kennedys” and “24,” the.

Refurbished: Surnow’s Debut a Casserole of Cliché
Seasoned television writer and producer Joel Surnow makes his directorial debut with Small Time, based on an autobiographical screenplay he wrote in the mid-1970s and has since retooled. While exuding a certain amount of polish that confirms an understanding of look and tone, the film feels resoundingly cliché and inescapably dull. Despite originating from the creator’s own life experiences, the film feels overtly familiar, to such a degree that it fails to resonate visually, emotionally, or narratively. Humdrum in every sense of the word, Surnow’s film may indeed be a passion project made for his own enjoyment; unfortunately, it fails to be of particular interest to anyone else.
Al Klein (Christopher Meloni) and his best bud Ash Martini (Dean Norris) own a used car lot and happen to be quite adept at what they do, often working in tandem to score sales.

As a veteran writer on shows like "24," "Nikita," "The Commish" and "Miami Vice," director Joel Surnow surely knows how to create an hour of television that keeps moving. So it makes it all the more curious that his skills abandon him for his feature debut, "Small Time," which gathers up a couple of pretty good leads in Christopher Meloni and Dean Norris, but abandons them in a narrative that's starts off confused about the point-of-view from the first frame, and eventually spins its wheels for a low stakes drama where not much of consequence actually happens. So perhaps in that sense, "Small Time" lives up to its name. Apparently "inspired" by a true story (though there's not much evidence of inspiration here), the story follows a couple of successful, used car dealership owners, Al Klein (Meloni) and his best buddy Ash Martini (Norris), who seem to have it all figured out.

In theaters, on iTunes and On Demand April 18th, the movie Small Time features not only a star-studded cast, it is also directed by 24 co-creator Joel Surnow. The movie follows Devon Bostick's (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) Freddy, a kid who would rather re-connect with his dad by working at a car lot rather than go to college. Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Svu) plays the car-salesman father, while Bridget Moynahan (Blue Bloods) is the mother who would much prefer her son continue on to higher education. The flick also stars Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Kevin Nealon (Weeds), and Amaury Nolasco (Transformers). Check out the trailer, and be sure to catch this family dramedy when it opens this Easter weekend.

"This was the summer I figured out who I am," someone states toward the end of Small Time, Joel Surnow's filmmaking debut. The sentiment isn't implausible or completely unearned, but its on-the-nose articulation exemplifies a problem with this character-driven dramedy: When a film about relationships features sentiments expressed as neatly and simplistically as that, the storytelling feels mechanical and contrived.

Playing the character of Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad has without a doubt defined Aaron Paul’s career. Everywhere he goes these days, people feel totally comfortable calling him “Bitch” to his face, all on account of his signature catch phrase as Walter White’s partner in crime. When an actor has a role that iconic, it can be difficult to escape from its shadow, but Aaron Paul apparently wishes to sidestep that dilemma by doubling down on Pinkman in the spinoff Better Call Saul.
Speaking at an interview for the upcoming Need for Speed movie, Paul said he bad been in “serious talks” with Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan about making a return for Better Call Saul:

When a casting flurry was soon replaced by relative tranquility and a looming production start, this writer thought Michael Bay‘s Pain and Gain had ceased any relevant pre-production movement. Now, however, EW reports on what could, all things considered, very well be the last addition — but I’ve been wrong before.
Anyway, we’ve heard that Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids, Bachelorette) will be joining this crime-comedy ensemble as Ramona Eldridge, one of the hucksters in on the film’s central scheme. Said scheme — actually a real-life, horrific crime — involves Marc Schiller (Tony Shalhoub), a Miami businessman kidnapped and tortured by bodybuilders (Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Anthony Mackie); Ed Harris, meanwhile, plays the detective chasing them. Shooting will begin sometime this spring.
Next up, THR says that Bridget Moynahan is looking to board Small Time, a Joel Surnow-helmed drama that, just last night, locked Christopher Meloni into the lead role.

Since walking away from his 12 year run on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the stern yet sexy Christopher Meloni has been landing work in major productions, from True Blood to Man of Steel. However, while the projects are big, his roles have been small, so it's thrilling to hear reports from THR that Meloni has entered into final talks to lead Small Time, a semi-autobiographical indie drama penned and helmed by Joel Surnow the co-creator of 24. Should he sign on, Meloni would star as a divorced used car salesman, based in Van Nuys, who is struggling with a nagging love for his ex-wife, and a son who'd rather work on the sales lot than go to college. Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules) has signed on to play the ambition-free son, while Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) has entered negotiations to play Meloni's business partner. Christopher Meloni departed from his full-time job on the small screen, but he’s busier than ever on the big one. After leaving Law and Order: Svu last year, he signed on to star in director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, and it was confirmed last month that the actor would reprise his role in the sequel to the cult comedy Wet Hot American Summer, which is currently in pre-production.
He’s adding another project to his busy schedule, as THR says that Meloni is in final negotiations to star in Small Time, an indie drama written, directed, and produced by Joel Surnow (24).
