In what’s shaping up to be a standout year for female filmmakers, Dee Rees is one of several unapologetic storytellers toppling the patriarchy and earning critical acclaim. For Rees, that’s with Mudbound, a harrowing yet beautifully directed story of two families as they try to survive in the Jim Crow South during and after World War II.
Adapted from Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel of the same name, Mudbound is a remarkable reflection of America, despite taking place in the late 1940s. “I think people are going to be able to really see themselves in this film,” Rees tells Et.
Starring Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Mary J. Blige and Jason Mitchell, the Netflix film shows the interconnected lives of a black family (the Jacksons) and a white family (the McAllans) living and working on the same farmland as both see relatives return home from the war. Rees says it’s the layers of citizenship, posttraumatic stress disorder...

Since making her Broadway debut in Eubie! in 1979, Jenifer Lewis has become a fixture onscreen with roles on A Different World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Girlfriends and Meet the Browns, as well as starring in films like Jackie’s Back and The Cookout. She’s perhaps best known for playing a string of iconic mothers; her onscreen offspring includes Taraji P. Henson (Not Easily Broken), Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got to Do With It), Whitney Houston (The Preacher’s Wife) and Tupac Shakur (Poetic Justice).
“I was everybody’s mama because I was a born leader,” Lewis boasts to Et. She has no qualms about the mothers she’s played, or even about taking on the roles that some of her colleagues in Hollywood may have viewed as stereotypes.
“Obviously, I’ll do anything,” she says with a laugh. “I don’t care what it is; for that kind of money, I’ll play the...

Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed if you haven't watched the season finale of American Horror Story: Cult.
Evan Peters is opening up about his "most difficult" season of American Horror Story yet.
During an exclusive interview with Et on Tuesday, the 30-year-old actor revealed what it was like taking on the lead role of Kai Anderson in Ahs: Cult and how he felt about that shocking season finale.
Over the course of seven seasons, Peters has been cast in a number of villainous roles, like Tate Langdon in Murder House, Jimmy Darling in Freak Show and James March in Hotel. But none have come close to Kai, whom Peters says was probably his favorite character he's portrayed in FX's anthology series thus far.

The final chapter begins in this first full-length trailer for Universal’s Fifty Shades Freed, which will be with us on February 9th, 2018. Behind the camera, director James Foley and Niall Leonard – husband to Fifty Shades author E.L. James – are now very much the driving forces behind the studio’s cinematic series, which despite being mauled by critics repeatedly, continues to rake in healthy box office profits.
But all of that will come to an end soon, as Freed will close the book on Christian and Anastasia’s story. Following the events of Fifty Shades Darker, the couple are now married, but all is not perfect, as Ana’s “threatened when her former boss, Jack Hyde, swears revenge for being fired from Sip. Elena also returns to haunt Christian and makes their lives a lot more troublesome.”
As for this first trailer, it’s more of what you’d expect from the franchise.

Having earned over $800 million, Wonder Woman has proven itself on many levels. In a year that started, more or less, with Hidden Figures, and with a summer that had three hits featuring women (the others being Atomic Blonde and Girls Trip) the female half of the movie going audience is finally receiving their due. Director Patty Jenkins has certainly shattered some records and glass ceilings along the way while Gal Gadot has now proven she can open a movie.
With Wonder Woman out today on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video, we have a chance to look back and enjoy it all over again. While it fits neatly in the larger DC Cinematic Universe thanks to the framing sequence, the movie largely works on its own with a vastly superior tone and vision than its predecessors.

Coming out of Wonder Woman, you’d struggle to find anyone who could reasonably dispute one simple fact: Etta Candy was the unsung hero of Patty Jenkins’ success story.
In a movie teeming with delightful characters – namely Sameer (Said Taghmaoui) and Charlie (Ewen Bremner) – Etta Candy stood head and shoulders above the rest within Wonder Woman‘s supporting cast and here, you’ll see Lucy Davis’ character recount an Amazonian history lesson in order to trumpet the film’s impending Blu-ray release.
Pegged to arrive on September 19th, Wonder Woman‘s home video release comes packing a ton of bonus features, most notably the “Etta’s Mission” epilogue, which allows the Jenkins-directed solo movie to dovetail with the events of Justice League ahead of its own launch in November.

Every year, the new fall TV lineup not only features established performers, but new talent on the verge of being truly embraced by the mainstream.
IndieWire has identified 17 of those relatively fresh faces poised to break out from this year’s crop of freshman comedies and dramas. Not everyone on lists like these goes onto blockbuster success, but one of the most exciting things about new shows is discovering emerging talent — and what they’re capable of. In past years, we’ve seen new stars emerge on shows across the spectrum of platforms, and in 2017 we have our theories who might end up being the stand-out performers for this season.
Important note: Because this list is humans-only, we tragically omitted giant teleporting puppy Lockjaw, from “Marvel’s Inhumans.” As soon as we have the time to celebrate all the great CGI characters currently on television, Lockjaw’s a lock.

For many, Wonder Woman represented a turning point in the DC Extended Universe. With several divisive films preceding it, director Patty Jenkins, lead actress Gal Gadot and the rest of the talented people on either side of the camera put forth their best effort, effectively crafting a superhero experience for the ages that we hope subsequent entries in the line will equal – or even surpass. That said, it’s certainly not hard to see why it recently passed the $400 million mark at the American box office.

They say television is the new film, and that’s certainly true when you look at how many actors, directors, writers, cinematographers and more from the film world are counted among this year’s Emmy nominees. A majority of the biggest contenders, from “The Handmaid’s Tale” to “The Night Of,” “Big Little Lies” and “The Crown,” brought some of the best film talent to the small screen over the last year, and their work resulted in major recognition from the TV Academy.

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,...

Fans of action movies are in for a real treat today, as Deadline is reporting that Jackie Chan and Sylvester Stallone, both icons of the genre, are set to team up for for Ex-Baghdad, an upcoming thriller produced by Chan’s Sr Media company. With a budget of $80 million, it’s looking to be one of the most costly Chinese productions to date and though both actors are now signed on, no release timetable or shooting schedule has been revealed just yet.
From what we understand, though, the film will revolve around a “Chinese-run oil refinery located in Mosul, Iraq that gets attacked by terrorists.” The owners of the refinery then call in Chan – who plays a private security contractor – to rescue the workers being held hostage. However, he can’t do it alone, and so he recruits Stallone’s ex-marine, leading to the two teaming up to save the day.

“Really,” she said. “I was hoping you could tell me.”
In another context, that could have been a trick question. In fact, it could be argued that the movie — or not movie — exists to embarrass easy answers, to encourage critical thinking, to challenge our preconceptions of what art should be and what art should be called.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is a family affair, building its action around an unexpected reunion between Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his outsized father, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), but the superhero feature also makes room for another fraught familial relationship: the estranged bond between Nebula (Karen Gillan), the purple-skinned, half-cyborg and her green-skinned sister Gamora (Zoe Saldana).
The sisters’ thorny relationship was framed with some large-scale action in Gunn’s 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe entry. The new film casts it in a different light, one that doesn’t hinge on the two of them kicking the crap out of each other in skintight suits (though that happens, too). Showbusiness might, as Carrie Fisher wrote, be a man’s meal, but a group of women played a crucial role in creating the blockbuster franchise
‘It’s a man’s world, and showbusiness is a man’s meal,” Carrie Fisher once wrote, “with women generously sprinkled through it like overqualified spice.” It certainly was a man’s galaxy. George Lucas’s first Star Wars film, which turns 40 on 25 May after being retitled A New Hope in 1983, features just two women characters with speaking parts: Aunt Beru and Princess Leia Organa. Behind the camera, female faces were just as scarce. When 19-year-old Fisher turned up for her first day on set at Elstree Studios in 1976, she noticed only three other women. “The crew was mostly men. That’s how it was and that’s how it pretty much still is.” Though few and far between, the unsung women of Star Wars...

There’s more than one love story at play in Sophie Brooks’ “The Boy Downstairs,” which follows a young New Yorker who returns to the city after two years away, only to discover that her wonderful new home just so happens to be located right above an apartment inhabited by her broken-hearted ex. For Mamet, who is now carving out the next stage of her career after the end of her name-making role in HBO’s “Girls,” the feeling was mutual.
Brooks used her own life as inspiration for the film – after being felled by a nasty bout of appendicitis, she dreamed up a story where a character is ill and can only be cared for by an ex – which she eventually expanded out into what would become “The Boy Downstairs.

Exhibit A: this jumpsuit that just won't cooperate. In a video she shared to her Snapchat account, the TV personality struggled to zip herself into a green one-piece. Behind the camera, a mystery voice could be heard assuring the star with encouraging words. "We can get it. Keep going. Ana Asensio’s Most Beautiful Island is a stormy, unpredictable endurance test from start-to-finish. At its core, immigration fears and female perspectives sing a plight of New York City’s rough waters. Command and circumstance manipulate those less fortunate, who will do anything to survive. Undocumented “citizens” walk alongside more entitled Americans, yet their experiences are so disconcertingly different. Do they always involve a life-threatening game of chance, as Asensio’s film engages? I would assume – maybe incorrectly – that answer is no. But still, given cinematic context, messages of tenacity are read loud and clear. Strung with tension, and heated to an aggressive boil.
Apart from writing and directing Most Beautiful Island, Asensio also stars as lead subject Luciana – a New Yorker with many responsibilities. Because she’s undocumented, most of Luciana’s work comes from odd-jobs paid in cash. Babysitting bratty kids and whatnot. Either that, or she scams...

Today is not only International Women’s Day, but a day when many are choosing to strike for A Day Without Women, an economic protest to remind the nation just how important women’s contributions to society are. And as part of that, IndieWire has assembled a powerful list of shows, all currently streaming online, that would not exist without the brilliant female creators at their center. This is the great TV that happens when women show up. Don’t take it for granted.

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Detour at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Chris Smith tells us the importance of FrightFest, his love of ‘film Noir’ and his hatred of reality TV…
FrightFest has premiered all your genre movies Creep, Severance, Triangle, Black Death, except Get Santa obviously. Is this positioning an important part of the rollout process for you?
Firstly let me apologise for being away for so long and thank you for having me back. I wrote Get Santa because I’d just had a son and was feeling like I wanted to do something that he could watch in the next 15 years. I expected the film to take a year to come together but it ended up taking four years. My son was by that time old enough to come to the premiere with a few of his class mates.
Back to the question, Frightfest is extremely important,...

In April 2016, digital network StyleHaul joined the content boom on Verizon’s Go90 platform by co-producing Relationship Status, a series about the relationship between technology and modern dating. Now, more episodes of that show are on the way thanks to a deal that will bring two additional Relationship Status seasons to Go90.
The renewal covers 24 episodes spread across the two forthcoming seasons. The Relationship Status cast will expand to feature both traditional TV notables (such as Gilmore Girls and Heroes vet Milo Ventimiglia, who co-starred in season one) and digital media standouts. That being said, aside from Ventimiglia’s reprisal of his role, no specific casting details have been announced yet.
Behind the camera, there are plenty of parties involved in the production of Relationship Status. Céline Geiger is the show’s creator, and its executive producers hail from StyleHaul, Full Fathom Five, and Ventimiglia’s Divide Pictures.

Keanu Reeves is in the midst of a pretty awesome comeback right now. After appearing in two of the most iconic action films of the 90s, and quite possibly of all-time, the actor didn’t have the best luck. In recent years, however, his fortunes have turned, and that’s mostly thanks to John Wick. The film saw Reeves play the titular hitman and though it didn’t do gangbusters at the box office, it became something of a cult hit and turned enough heads to warrant a sequel.
This weekend, John Wick: Chapter 2 shot its way into theaters and so far, things look promising for the flick. Reviews are very positive and though it’s going up against The Lego Batman Movie and Fifty Shades Darker at the box office, it should have no trouble pulling in a good chunk of change. So, where does Keanu go from here?...

IndieWire’s Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention.
Don’t let newly minted multi-hyphenate Michelle Morgan’s resume fool you — she always wanted to be a writer. Although Morgan’s first official forays into the industry included small parts on shows like “CSI: Miami” and, yes, even “Saved By the Bell: The New Class” and an arc on “American Dreams,” she originally went to school for screenwriting and simply fell into acting.
And it wasn’t necessarily something that fueled her creatively, which is why Morgan eventually returned to writing, penning the scripts for John Stockwell’s “Middle of Nowhere” and Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s “Girl Most Likely.” In 2013, she turned to directing, with her amusing short “K.I.T,” which screened at Sundance. This time around at the festival, Morgan has combined all of her skills, and she not only...

Heading to Sundance next week is Sydney Freeland’s coming-of-age dramedy “Deidra & Laney Rob a Train,” starring newcomers Ashleigh Murray and Rachel Crow.
The movie follows Deidra, a whip-smart high school senior, and her younger sister Laney who, after their mother Marigold (Danielle Nicolet) is thrown in jail for a minor offense, hatch a plan to rob trains to get money and support their family. Things seem to be working out for them until a railroad detective (Tim Blake Nelson) starts sniffing around.
Written by Shelby Farrell, “Deidra & Laney Rob a Train” also co-stars Sasheer Zamata, David Sullivan, Missi Pyle, Arturo Castro, Brooke Markham and Sharon Lawrence.

Murray previously mentioned that she hopes the film helps audiences see that people can always get through hard times – just don’t break the law.

Every year, there are certain patterns in film and TV that arise from marketing, cultural trends or simple financial success. Naturally, the Internet has become better and better at pointing these out, often through supercuts and video edits. Though we’re only a few weeks into 2017, there are plenty of these patterns to be sussed out, even if they’re only from movie trailers.

Watch the video below.

Last year’s Sundance Film Festival will long be remembered as a bidding battle zone. Streaming giants Netflix and Amazon Studios flooded the marketplace for the very first time, each picking up more festival titles than any theatrical distributor. The latter threw down $10 million for “Manchester By The Sea,” a risk that is paying off in spades this awards season. But the same fate did not meet “The Birth of A Nation,” which has the honor of being the biggest Sundance buy in history. Fox Searchlight paid $17.5 million for the drama, but director Nate Parker’s resurfaced rape trial derailed the movie at the box office.

And so 2017 kicks off with an early remake story, this time concerning the 1983 musical, Valley Girl. Fifty Shades of Grey may have been a commercial success, scoring a cool $571 million at the worldwide box office, but it certainly wasn’t an enjoyable watch. Actors hyping up their own films is nothing new, or out of the ordinary, but it’s still always nice to hear, especially when it’s for one of the biggest releases of next year. Not that Star Wars: Episode VIII needs anymore hype, mind you. With The Force Awakens proving to be an absolute juggernaut at the box office and beloved by fans, and Rogue One performing extremely well, too, Disney is certainly being looked upon favorably by moviegoers who are eager to eat up anything and everything Star Wars related.

Gordon Hunt, television director and father of actress Helen Hunt, died on Saturday at his home in Sherman Oaks, California, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 87.

"If you asked 100 people who knew him 100 of them would say he was the kindest man they ever knew," she continued.

It’s rare to see someone on the verge of action-figure metamorphosis. Until now, Diego Luna was a well-respected actor (“Milk” and “Mister Lonely,” among many others) as well as a producer of TV and film, including his own directorial efforts “Mr. Pig,” “Cesar Chavez,” and “Abel.” He’s better known in his native Mexico than in the U.S.
However, as the male lead of Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the first standalone feature in the rapidly expanding “Star Wars” universe, all of that will change as of December 16.
He’s giddy, if not geeky, about this turn of events. A naturally generous and fast talker, Luna punctuates his points with big hand motions and bigger smiles as he shares the same refrain that seems to be programmed into all newly minted “Star Wars” actors: They were fans first. Disney has released a simple, yet elegant new poster for their Beauty and the Beast remake today which pays homage to the 1994 classic. It’s the latest bit of promotional material to arrive on the web, after we got a new batch of photos early last week. They gave us a look at the star-studded cast in costume and while this new poster is nowhere near as revealing, it’s a welcome piece of art nonetheless.
Behind the camera for the remake is Bill Condon, who’ll be directing Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as the titular pair. As you can see in the gallery below, the poster is reminiscent of the one for the original, and is a nice nod to what’s widely considered to be one of Disney’s very best films – at least, in our opinion.

Andrjez Wajda was not just the conscience of Polish cinema, he lived and shaped his nation’s troubled history first-hand, standing up to tyrants and bureaucrats with a courage that almost cost him his career. Wajda died on Sunday, aged 90, just two weeks after his final film, Afterimage, was announced as Poland’s official Oscar contender. Directing more than 50 films over six decades, Wajda continually returned to Poland’s long decades of repression by hostile occupying forces, first Nazi Germany and then Soviet Russia. Behind the camera, he became a master of visual poetry, but also a sharp critic of

The cast of Marvel’s Black Panther continues to expand, with several more names joining the film today. First up we have Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker, who’s been cast as an “elder statesman in Wakanda” named Zuri. Aside from him, we also have Daniel Kaluuya as T’Challa’s friend W’Kabi, and Florence Kasumba as Ayo, a “member of the Dora Milaje” who had a minor part in Civil War.
This casting news comes hot on the heels of Winston Duke being added to the roster as well, in the villainous role of M’Baku. Together, the newcomers will join Chadwick Boseman in the lead role as the titular hero, where he’ll be flanked by an impressive supporting cast made up of Michael B. Jordan and Lupita Nyong’o.

With the film expected to start shooting early next year, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Marvel’s Black Panther had all but finished up its casting process. Well, think again, because Variety is reporting that the studio has just added Person of Interest actor Winston Duke to the roster, with the relative newcomer set to play the villainous Man-Ape.
Duke joins Michael B. Jordan as the film’s other antagonist, Erik Killmonger, along with star Chadwick Boseman. They’ll be surrounded by a strong supporting cast which consists of Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira, not to mention a rumored Andy Serkis. Joining Black Panther is a pretty big step for Duke, as he’s yet to make his feature film debut and doing so in a Marvel movie with what’s described as a “key role” will no doubt be a huge deal for his career.

On Monday evening, the first of three Presidential debates was held, pitting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, against businessman Donald Trump, the Republican candidate. This Friday, the historical drama Denial opens, and they’re kind of a perfect pairing. Politics aside, there’s a fundamental frustration when it seems like only one side is using facts in their argument, and that’s a central theme in Denial. Though it’s about a historian going up against a Holocaust denier, you can easily see the parallels. A decade ago, this would have been a surefire awards contender. This year, it’s a bit more of a fringe player, but it’s definitely a solid film and one well worth seeing. The movie centers on the surreal legal battle that author and historian Deborah E. Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) endured when she was sued for libel by noted Holocaust...
