“The light. Always, the light.” Tom Ripley is staring at a Caravaggio painting in a Roman church, his typical blank expression a touch more bewildered than usual, when a priest comes up behind him and tells him to pay attention to the light, how the artist uses the contrast of brightness and deep shadow to direct the eye. The moment is brief; Tom isn’t one for introspection, and like a shark, he never stays in place for long. But the line doubles as a clue to the audience as well, some of whom have been as bemused as Tom by “Ripley’s” quietly dazzling style.

“Obviously, it was a fairly big ask,” declares visual effects supervisor Doug Larmour about the outrageously complicated visual effects deployed in the big budget Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller “Constellation.” For our recent webchat he adds, “Having worked in a few space projects before and knowing that there’s a solution for zero gravity. You build sets with take-off rooms and ceilings, and you build a wind system and a flying system with some really good special effects people. You get a whole lot of wonderful people to remove all your wires for you. And then you in terms of floating objects, it’s C.G.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

We still don’t know whether Kevin Costner will be returning to his role as John Dutton for the final stretch of Yellowstone when the back half of Season 5 returns this November. However, some fans have a very clever idea for how the show could finish out the character’s arc by hiring someone else for the role: his Hollywood look-alike Bob Odenkirk to step into Dutton’s scruffy boots! For those unfamiliar with the Odenkirk-Costner connection, the gag comes from the former’s hit series Better Call Saul. In the Breaking Bad prequel, Odenkirk stars as a pre-Saul Goodman version of his character, who still goes by his given name of Jimmy McGill and pulls off lots of minor (but still gnarly) cons on unsuspecting rubes. In one instance, he convinces a pair of girls to come home with him and his best friend on the pretense that he’s Kevin Costner,...

Hugh Grant has been expanding on his career beyond his famous rom-coms, having starred in last year’s special effects-laden big-budget films Wonka and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Grant will be returning to his popular franchise with Renée Zellweger for the recently announced upcoming fourth film in the Bridget Jones movies, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The plot is said to “pick up with Bridget in her early fifties, as she navigates the challenges of modern life while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.”
Grant recently spoke with the publication People as he teases the next installment in the series. The English actor stated,
It is very moving as well as funny. It’s partly based on Helen Fielding’s experiences of bringing up two children by herself after her husband died. And so Bridget is bringing up two kids and wondering whether she should ever go back to dating.

Giancarlo Esposito’s role as Gus Fring, the fast food franchise owner who moonlights as a lethal drug lord, made him one of the most beloved parts of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” But while his performance in Vince Gilligan’s New Mexico-set TV universe earned him two Emmy nominations and paved the way for him to enter some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, the actor has not forgotten the dark moments he faced early in his career.
In a new interview with SiriusXM’s “Jim & Sam” (via Variety), Esposito detailed his early struggles as an unemployed actor. He revealed that at his lowest point, he even considered planning his own murder so that his family could receive a life insurance payout.
“My way out in my brain was: ‘Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’” Esposito said. “[My wife] had no idea...

Although the last installment in the series didn’t receive the greatest reviews, Far Cry 7 is still a title that has the potential to turn things around for the franchise. The series has been one of the developer’s signature franchises, enjoying highs with its third installment and mixed lows with its more recent entries. But Far Cry has a history of having memorable villains, and their impact becomes even stronger when they are portrayed by familiar Hollywood actors.
It seems like in Far Cry 7, the Hollywood A-lister, who recently won an Oscar for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Christopher Nolan-directed film, will be following in the footsteps of Giancarlo Esposito and Michael Mando.

We have recently revealed that fans on Ranker have voted Gustavo Fring from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as the best TV villain of all time, which is something we have agreed with. Played by Giancarlo Esposito, Gustavo Fring turned out to be a formidable villain and a character with amazing development, which is why he remains one of the most popular characters from the whole franchise despite being the series’ major villain.
But, as it turns out, actor Giancarlo Esposito had been in a very bad place just before he was cast in Breaking Bad, and as it turns out – the series literally saved his life, which is an interesting revelation in light of the fact that Esposito is today one of the most popular TV actors overall.

It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

Giancarlo Esposito may be a big star now, but times were so tough in the aughts that he considered committing insurance fraud to help pay the bills.

Giancarlo Esposito looked back at his financial struggles this week, recalling a time when he considered ordering his own murder in pursuit of a life insurance payout for his family.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam show, Esposito said he went through two bankruptcies before landing Breaking Bad, as well as a foreclosure on his home. At his lowest, he told the hosts, he considered suicide.
“The first thing that had me think there was a way out, was my wife’s father — God rest his soul — Pops McManigal was in insurance,” Esposito said. “So I asked [my ex-wife], I started poking around, ‘How much am I insured for?’ And then she told me. My way out in my brain was, I said, ‘Hey, do you get life insurance, if someone commits suicide, do they get the bread?’ And my wife said, ‘Well, that’s kind of tricky.’”

We typically think of any actor who has appeared in movies and television as having it made, but that’s not the case for most working actors. In fact, before Giancarlo Esposito landed the role of Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, he was so broke that he was considering arranging his own murder for the life insurance money.
While speaking on Sirius Xm’s Jim & Sam show, Giancarlo Esposito revealed that the year before Breaking Bad, he was in dire financial straits and desperately looking for a way out. “My way out in my brain was…’Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Giancarlo Esposito appeared on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Jim & Sam” show while promoting his new AMC drama series “Parish” and revealed that he was so broke prior to landing his iconic role of Gus Fring on “Breaking Bad” that he once considered arranging his own murder so that his children could have some financial protection courtesy of his life insurance money. The actor considered this around 2008, a year before “Breaking Bad” inextricably changed his career and opened the door for roles in “The Mandalorian,” “The Boys” and more.
Asked how he got out of near bankruptcy around 2008, Esposito said, “My way out in my brain was: ‘Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’ My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff. I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance.

Bad Boys apparently really are for life as it seems that this action-packed franchise isn’t ending anytime soon with Sony Pictures’ Bad Boys 4 set to reach theatres in just a couple months. This series, centered on detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett of the Miami Police Department, has already produced three blockbuster films that have grossed over $840 million as well as a spinoff television show, L.A.’s Finest, making it one of the most successful buddy-cop action-comedy series in history. The most recent film, Bad Boys for Life, was one of the last movies to hit theaters before the pandemic shut them all down and was able to be a critical and box office success – so why would the franchise stop now? Will Smith and Martin Lawrence (Lowery and Burnett) are back for the fourth film, and this is music to the ears of fans of the series since...

In the early days of the Covid lockdown, you heard a lot about people taking up new hobbies: making sourdough bread, learning to knit, mastering Peloton — whatever it took to stay occupied and relatively sane while stuck in our own homes, isolated from the rest of the world.
In my household, nobody studied a foreign language or alphabetized their bookshelves. Instead, Bluey became our sourdough starter. And we clearly weren’t the only ones who found comfort in deeply uncomfortable times from this cartoon, aimed at preschoolers, about a family of anthropomorphized dogs.

Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman in the blockbuster series Breaking Bad was an interesting role that got its own spin-off series with the actor as the protagonist. Better Call Saul which worked as a prequel to the Bryan Cranston series, was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows that put Odenkirk front and center.

There’s at least one extended scene from AMC’s Parish that didn’t make it into the final cut of the series.
During Deadline’s Contenders TV panel on Saturday, star Skeet Ulrich told the story of one 15-minute take where he and co-star Giancarlo Esposito ad-libbed far past where the cameras were supposed to stop rolling.
“The cut starts there, where he shoves me,” he said of the scene, the final version of which does see the pair going at it — verbally, at least. “But in one of them, I shove him back … well, he slipped off of this bank into the water.
And I’m like, ‘Oh man, I think I just lost my job.’ So I reached down to grab him. He’s ad-libbing so far, and I reached out to grab him up, and he pulls me in.”

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the still unpredictable drama field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve circled back to the most chaotic genre of this Emmys cycle: drama. That’s fitting, I guess, because, you know, drama! But this remains a field that’s wide open spaces, with a placeholder frontrunner in “The Crown” and then a bunch of new shows vying for attention and older series looking to get on the academy’s series radar for the first time. I don’t know what to make of this, except to wait patiently for one or more of those favored limited series to make the jump here. But until that happens, we must prognosticate with the hand we were dealt.

The first season of the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon made its debut on HBO and Max in August of 2022, about two and a half years after Game of Thrones wrapped up its groundbreaking run.
Much like the original show, House of the Dragon is based on the A Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin.
The show is set hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones but takes place hundreds of years before the events of that show.
House of the Dragon is set to return for a second season, with the premiere scheduled for June 16 on HBO and Max.
Due in part to last year's strikes, House of the Dragon is coming off a long layoff of over 18 months since the first season's finale.
The question has been raised of whether the fan excitement is there for that second season,...

Just once, it would be refreshing to see a serial killer movie in which the detectives investigating a series of horrific murders were actually normal, well-adjusted individuals. The kind of cops who leave their work at the office, go home to their families, and drink only the occasional beer or glass of wine at dinner. The ones, in other words, who don’t live up to the title of the new thriller featuring a top-billed Samuel L. Jackson but in which the real leading player is Gianni Capaldi, who also co-scripted.
That’s definitely not the case with Damaged, a routine cop movie mainly distinguished by its extensive Scottish locations. Jackson plays Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective still haunted by a bunch of killings years earlier in which one of the victims was his own girlfriend. When a similar series of murders — in which the victims’ bodies are dismembered and...

Five years ago, a serial killer terrorized Chicago. Detective Dan Lawson was assigned to the case but couldn’t bring the killer to justice. It left him a badly damaged man, drinking on the job and obsessed with revenge. Doubly so because one of the victims was his own girlfriend whom he discovered, her head and limbs in the shape of a cross, her torso missing.
In Edinburgh, Detective Glen Boyd finds himself investigating a murder that looks to be the work of the same person. He reaches out to the Chicago Pd, who are only too happy to put Lawson on the next flight to Scotland. Fortunately, there weren’t any motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.
Things, of course, don’t go well.

John Carter and Wall-e director Andrew Stanton is working on a fascinating new sci-fi film. If In The Blink Of An Eye sticks to the script, we could be in for something special.
His career stretching back to the late 1980s, Andrew Stanton is best known for his animated work at Pixar, whether it’s as writer (1995’s ground-breaking Toy Story) or writer-director.
As a live-action filmmaker, he’s probably almost as well known for 2012’s John Carter, a hugely expensive sci-fi adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess Of Mars. One of those films that seemed to have vultures circling it before it was even released, John Carter was ultimately a box office misfire.
In the wake of it, Stanton kept himself busy with animated projects at Disney and Pixar, but has also found time to write or direct the odd TV episode, including instalments of Stranger Things,...

Bridget Jones is heading back to the screen.
After months of quiet chess pieces moves, Universal Pictures and Working Title have finally put in place the talent for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the fourth installment of the British-based romantic film comedy series.
Renée Zellweger is set to return as the lovable but flailing at life Jones as is Hugh Grant as rapscallion Daniel Cleaver. Emma Thompson, who appeared in the 2016 entry, Bridget Jones’s Baby, is back as well while newcomers include Chiwetel Ejiofor and up-and-comer Leo Woodall, best known for his work in White Lotus season 2.
Michael Morris, who helmed the Andrea Riseborough drama To Leslie, will be sitting in the director’s chair when cameras roll for the feature, which adapts the best-selling 2013 novel by Jones creator Helen Fielding. Fielding also wrote the script.

“Star Trek” has a storied history with the Emmys, but its recognition has usually come in below-the-line categories. The only times the franchise has made the cut for Best Drama Series were for the original series in 1967 and 1968 and “The Next Generation” in 1994. But this is a wide-open year for dramas at the Emmys, and there are eight slots to fill for Best Drama. Can “Discovery” or “Strange New Worlds” get the franchise into the top race for the first time in 30 years?
Of last year’s nominees for Best Drama Series, only “The Crown” is able to return. “Succession” and “Better Call Saul” ended their runs, while “Andor,” “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and “Yellowjackets” won’t premiere new episodes in this eligibility period. That leaves seven available slots. It might still seem like an uphill climb for “Discovery” and “Strange New Worlds,...

Showtime’s “The Curse” is one of the most unique TV entries of the past year. The acclaimed drama series from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie follows a newly married couple (Fielder and Oscar-winner Emma Stone) who host an HGTV show trying to conceive a child while navigating a curse.
The show’s tone and style, a satirical black comedy, makes for extraordinary viewing and while it is classified as a drama for awards purposes, it transcends genre classification in reality. Critics agree, this is one of the most unique and colorful TV shows out there.
Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) explained: “To its credit, ‘The Curse’ never takes its foot off the pedal, to the point where we’re absolutely sure Whitney and Asher are going to crash and burn — yet we’re still not prepared for the inspired lunacy of the fate that awaits them.”

The initial trailer for MaXXXine has been released ahead of its highly anticipated premiere in theaters this summer.
This new installment in the X series marks the third entry, following the original film and its prequel Pearl, both released in 2022.
Returning as the protagonist Maxine, Mia Goth reprises her role as the adult film actress who emerged as the lone survivor of the events depicted in X. However, this time, she’s supported by an impressive ensemble cast.
Among the cast are Giancarlo Esposito from Better Call Saul, Lily Collins from Emily in Paris, Elizabeth Debicki from The Crown, Bobby Cannavale from Ant-Man and The Wasp, and the iconic Kevin Bacon.
While X was set at the end of the 1970s in rural Texas, this film moves the action into the ’80s and to the glamour of Los Angeles, as Maxine attempts to pursue a career as a big Hollywood starlet.

Daredevil: Born Again has gone through several changes following its creative overhaul in late 2023. From getting Dario Scardapane, Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead onboard to lead the series, and bringing back Karen and Foggy, to the recent return of Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, the show went through numerous favorable changes. However, it looks like this revamp has also concerned the fans about some characters being written off from the show.

Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” has quickly become one of television’s most exciting shows. Based on the book by Mick Herron, the show combines razor-sharp writing (from showrunner Will Smith of “The Thick of It” fame) with masterclass acting from the likes of Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The series follows the lives of those working at Slough House, a division of MI5 where disgraced agents who have made mistakes are exiled. It’s full of wit and humor, as one would expect from a show created by an alum of “The Thick of It,” but it’s also a genuine thriller, too, as all the best spy stories are. And critics have fallen for it since its inception, continuing to heap praise on this third season.
Fran Hoepfner (Slate) noted: “Part ‘Killing Eve’, part John le Carré lite, ‘Slow Horses’ continues to stand head and shoulders above...

Dublin, Ireland. Headquarters of Guinness, Jameson, and the most overpriced beer you can find in the Temple Bar area. Steeped in history, Dublin boasts landmarks like Trinity College and Dublin Castle, emblematic of its medieval heritage. Amidst its historical allure, the city’s streets thrive with the energy of bustling pubs resonating with music and culinary delights. However, beyond its libations and cultural landmarks, Dublin harbors a lesser-known connection to vampire folklore.
Since early childhood, my mother took me to the movies weekly. And horror was always a shared love. It was an obsession I’m sure many of us share. My love for vampire films and stories began as soon as I was introduced to The Lost Boys. But Ireland was special for us. Having ancestral ties to the majestic island, we always dreamed of visiting it and taking in the stunning landscape one day.
So, how do vampires and Ireland come into play?...
