The director of the forthcoming X-Men film, New Mutants, has revealed that he envisioned it as the first of three movies...
After news broke that a new X-Men film was due to start shooting in April in Montreal, and that the same film was director Josh Boone's New Mutants, we'd be forgiven for feeling spoiled with exciting news.
See related Star Wars: Rogue One enjoys huge opening weekend
But things might be a little larger in scope than even we imagined, as Boone has alluded to the notion of this being the first of three New Mutants features he hopes to make.
In an interview with creativescreenwriting, the director initially chatted about his early love of comic books, which is the kind of attachment you would always hope for from someone behind a launching pad for a whole multitude of beloved new mutants on the big screen.

Next month, Netflix offers up a giant selection of films — modern to classic, animated to live action, Oscar winners and indie favorites — and we’ve picked seven that you should watch as soon as they’re available on the streaming service, either for the first time or as part of a nostalgic binge. Enjoy.
1. “Boogie Nights” (available January 1)
Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 comedy about a young man who gets into the California porn industry in the late 1970’s and ‘80s. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay.
2. “Braveheart” (available January 1)
Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director, the Mel Gibson-starring drama follows William Wallace’s revolt against King Edward I of England after his secret bride is executed for assaulting an English soldier who tried to rape her.

Reaching back over a half century, “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years” thrived with a contemporary mix of theaters and Hulu home viewing availability to become a major grossing event this weekend. The Ron Howard concert doc led an otherwise bleak set of new openers as audiences wait for top titles from festivals to reach theaters.
Included among the openers are two films from directors of Best Picture winners that got little attention: “Mr. Church” from Bruce Beresford (“Driving Miss Daisy”) and “Finding Altamira” from Hugh Hudson (“Chariots of Fire”). Fortunes take different paths. Ron Howard directed “Eight Days a Week,” while Clint Eastwood and Oliver Stone are nabbing attention with “Sully” at #1 and “Snowden” farther back in the pack, respectively.

Whenever there’s a new drama with Academy Award-nominated actors debasing themselves to play homeless, lowly or generally impoverished people, you come with certain preset expectations. Something almost along the lines of 30 Rock‘s Hard to Watch: Based on the Novel “Stone Cold Bummer” by Manipulate. You expect the worst, but you can’t help it. You’ve been burnt too many times before.
Thankfully and surprisingly, however, Cardboard Boxer, producer Knate Lee’s directorial debut, is not quite that. Sure, it’s cliched, manipulative and kinda indulgent, but it’s not completely awful. In fact, there’s a powerful film in here, just waiting to come out. And it sometimes does. But either through the filmmaker’s inexperience or his lack of narrative constraint, Lee only earns part of his unexpected potential. Knowing what he could have achieved, in spite of the odds, ultimately makes the uneven final product all the more disappointing.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Naomi Watts hasn’t made a horror movie in many moons, but she’s hardly a stranger to the genre. “The Ring” solidified her as a star after she made her breakthrough with David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive,” and the two-time Oscar nominee will soon reconnect to her genre roots with “Shut In.” The upcoming thriller just debuted its first trailer via USA Today, and thanks to the wonders of the internet you can watch it below.

"I wish someone would see me, just to know I am here..." Well Go USA has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Cardboard Boxer, starring Thomas Haden Church as a homeless man struggling to make ends meet. He's coerced by two teens to fight other men for cash, but obviously doesn't like doing so, and just wants to get away from his life on the streets. The cast includes Terrence Howard, Boyd Holbrook, and Macy Gray. The official description calls the film an "unflinching look at the lives of the displaced and forgotten members of society." This looks very powerful and heartbreaking, and even though Thomas Haden Church is almost hard to look at, he seems to be giving an earnest performance. This is worth a quick watch. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Knate Lee's Cardboard Boxer, in high def from Apple: Willie (Thomas Haden Church...

Knate Lee, known for producing the Johnny Knoxville-led “Jackass 3D” and “Bad Grandpa,” has stepped behind the camera to direct his first feature film “Cardboard Boxer,” starring Thomas Haden Church.
The drama – which appears to have skipped the festival circuit – centers on Willie (Church), a homeless man who is paid by two rich teens to fight other men for cash and then struggles to escape the dark world he’s gotten himself into. With the help of a new pen-pal and a trusting new friend (Terrence Howard), he hopes to turn his life around.
Written by Lee, “Cardboard Boxer” also co-stars “Narcos’s” Boyd Holbrook, Rhys Wakefield, and musician Macy Gray. Check out the first trailer below.

“From a distance it presents itself like so many other small towns all over the the world, safe, decent, innocent. Get closer though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath.” Those are the first words audiences hear from the dark and twisted trailer for the CW’s new show, “Riverdale.”
Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, the drama is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
In the first trailer, fans get introduced to a handful of its characters and a murder that has recently taken place. You can watch it by clicking here.

With X-Men:Apocalypse, Deadpool, and what is believed to Hugh Jackman’s last hurrah as Wolverine already coming down the track, 20th Century Fox have another spin-off from their highly successful X-Men franchise in the works, with Deadline reporting the studio have officially announced The New Mutants (whose book incidentally featured the first appearance of Deadpool), which focuses on a team of young mutants training at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters to one day be called X-Men. Two members of The New Mutants have already appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sunspot (Adan Canto) and Warpath (Booboo Stewart). Fox have handed the reins of this new spin-off to The Fault in our Stars director Josh Boone, who will also pen the script alongside Knate Gwaltney (Kidnap and Cardboard Boxer, both in post-production). Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile.

The Rules of Fight Club. Do talk about this indie feautre. For his feature debut, first time director Knate Gwaltney choose a storyline that is more outrageous than everything he might have produced for the numerous series: Jackass films and television items included. Featuring Boyd Holbrook (who broke out big last year at Sundance with Little Accidents – see still above and might be at the fest with his own short, Peacock Killer), Cardboard Boxer went into production late last year with the young star being joined by the acting ranks of Thomas Haden Church, Terrence Howard, Rhys Wakefield and Macy Gray. On the tech side, Cinematographer Peter Holland (Drunktown’s Finest) lenses.

Unlike say a micro-budgeted indie with enough coin in the backend for post-production, chances are slim that this modestly priced indie with A-list cast which already locked in a distrib in Bleecker Street folks would have been readied for the festival. But, I’m not counting it out just yet. Starring Viggo Mortensen (see set pic above with director on the left), Missi Pyle, Steve Zahn, Kathryn Hahn, George MacKay (check out our interview), Erin Moriarty and Frank Langella, Captain Fantastic is actor Matt Ross’ sophomore effort. It happens to directly follow in the footsteps of the Sundance accepted, under-the-radar, financially more tight budgeted 28 Hotel Rooms (2012) which was preceded by, more than a decade before it, his short film (also a Sundance selection) entitled, The Language of Love (1997). It’ll be a race to the finish line if included.

The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing, and the marketplace is packed with many high profile projects being packaged up for international sales. One such package, announced today, is Kidnap – a movie that will star Academy Award winner Halle Berry in the lead role.
Directed by Luis Prieto (Pusher), the film follows a woman dealing with the abduction of her young son, stopping at nothing to get him back home safely. Described as a female version of Liam Neeson’s Taken movies, Kidnap is written by Jackass alum Knate Gwaltney, and produced by the legendary Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformer: Age Of Extinction).
This is an intriguing prospect for several reasons. Firstly, when provided with the right material, Halle Berry can turn in a compelling performance. She is an Oscar winner, after all. It’s unfortunate that the right material doesn’t seem to find its way to her very often,...
