British actor Sheyi Cole has a prominent role in Thea Sharrock’s Netflix original film “The Beautiful Game.”
The film revolves around the Homeless World Cup, an annual soccer tournament bringing together displaced or dispossessed players from nearly 50 countries, playing not merely for a trophy but for a second shot at life. Cole plays Jason, a would-be ladies’ man given a sharp #MeToo education when he inappropriately comes onto sparky Mexican-American player Rosita (Cristina Rodio).
“One thing that was great about Thea is that she was so hands on – any concerns that we had, she was willing to have conversations and was able to alleviate any concerns that we essentially had, surrounding that conversation with Jason,” Cole told Variety. “I think what she really wanted to highlight was Jason’s naivety and innocence. And the lack of role models that he had in his life. So although Jason does make grave mistakes,...

Berlin — In a bellwether deal on one of the cutting edges of European TV, Zdf Studios has taken distribution worldwide on drama series “The Zweiflers,” produced by Turbokultur for Ard Degeto Film and Hessischer Rundfunk (Hr).
Created and showrun by David Hadda, the six-part series will premiere in Germany on Ard’s Mediathek streaming service in the spring and also be shown on Das Erste, Ard’s main linear channel, in the near future.
In an age of spiraling costs and a large need to cut through a still immensely crowded market, Europe’s public broadcasters –Zdf Studios, not Zdf in this case – are looking to partner. The most obvious partners are other state TV networks, even in their own country if the co-operation works.
“We have already added Ard Degeto Film projects to our portfolio before. And there will be more in the future. There are no limits to our choice of partners,...

The visceral melodic pulse heard in the bass playing of Aston “Family Man” Barrett, who died on February 3, is most closely associated with anchoring the messages and providing the sonic heartbeat within Bob Marley’s music. In 1970, Family Man and his brother, drummer Carlton “Carly” Barrett, began playing with Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, who had formed the Wailers in 1963.
Following the departure of Tosh and Wailer from the group in 1973 and throughout Marley’s rise to global stardom as the decade progressed, the Wailers served as his backing band,...

Exclusive: John Boyega is set to headline and executive produce The Book of Eli, a TV series prequel to the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film that starred Denzel Washington in the title role, Deadline has learned. Boyega will play younger version of Washington’s Eli in the project, which hails from the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, creator/writer/executive producer of the potential series, and its directors, the Hughes brothers, who executive produce. The film’s producer Alcon Entertainment is the studio on the TV project, which is about to be taken out to select premium buyers, I hear.
The neo-Western Book of Eli movie takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide. It revolves around Eli (Washington), a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation.

“What if I don’t like the guy I am now, bro” says Bosco (Malcolm Kamulete). “You have to learn to like him ‘cause you’re stuck with him” says Rusty (Keiren Hamilton-Amos). Watching family dynamics play out on screen never goes out of fashion and BBC’s latest drama Champion is proof of that.
A love letter to South London, Champion is the first TV project written by Candice Carty-Williams, author of the 2019 novel Queenie, which will also be released as a TV drama on Channel 4 later this year. Champion tells the story of the titular family, focusing mostly on the Champion siblings, rapper Bosco and his sister Vita (Déja J Bowens) as they battle with their sense of duty to their family and their own musical success.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

Steve McQueen is a name so cool that two famous people have to share it: the American actor and action film icon known for films like “The Great Escape” and “Bullitt” before he died in 1980, and the Oscar-winning British film director behind acclaimed dramas like “12 Years a Slave,” “Hunger,” and “Small Axe.” Now, McQueen the director has revealed that McQueen the actor was part of his formative filmgoing experiences.
In an interview with The Messenger to promote his documentary “Occupied City,” McQueen was asked about his favorite film starring the actor who shares his name. Although McQueen initially hesitated to share, he eventually revealed his favorite to be “The Magnificent Seven.” A western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic “Seven Samurai” from director John Sturges, the 1960 film focuses on a group of seven American gunslingers hired to protect a Mexican village from terrorizing bandits. Actor Jonathan Majors was recently found guilty of harassment and assault in the third degree. As a result, he was fired by Marvel Studios, losing the role of Kang the Conqueror, a supervillain he had already played in 2023's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." The conceit of Kang the Conqueror was that he was able to travel between timelines and dimensions, consorting with alternate versions of himself to exercise his wicked schemes, so Majors was poised to play multiple versions of Kang. He also appeared in the TV series "Loki" as Kang alternates, and was presumably going to be the central villain in the planned 2026 crossover film "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty." With Majors' verdict and firing, the role of Kang will be recast or merely written out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reportedly, the title of "The Kang Dynasty" has been altered on Marvel's memos to merely be "Avengers 5,...

Within the last decade, Mark Ruffalo has collected many film and TV acting trophies – including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and three SAG Awards – but has yet to win the favor of the Critics Choice Association despite receiving numerous nominations from them across multiple categories. Although he has had the least luck in their Best Supporting Actor contests, his inclusion in 2024’s could finally lead to a positive outcome. Either way, the “Poor Things” cast member will at least finish this awards season having made history as the first man to ever compete for this featured performance prize four times.
On his previous three Best Supporting Actor bids for “The Kids Are All Right” (2011), “Foxcatcher” (2015), and “Spotlight” (2016), Ruffalo was respectively bested by Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), J.K. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association is announcing winners for the best films and performances of 2023.
After Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” won the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Awards for best film, all eyes are on the California journalists to see if they will opt for something else or continue the lovefest for one of cinema’s most adored auteurs.
Last year, the West Coast organization had two films tied for its top prize. Todd Field’s psychological drama “Tár” and the eventual best picture-winning dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” from the Daniels.

Exclusive: The BBC is returning to its adaptation of Alex Wheatle’s book Crongton Knights after shelving the series amid sexual misconduct allegations against actor and producer Noel Clarke.
Clarke was overseeing an adaptation through his Unstoppable Film & Television outfit, but the project has now transferred to The Long Shadow and Champion producer New Pictures.
New Pictures is adapting the novel for Cbbc, the British broadcaster’s kids channel. Archie Maddocks, a writer and comedian, has penned the scripts. The BBC and New Pictures declined to comment.
Crongton Knights centers on McKay, who has experienced the hardship of his mother’s death and his father working all hours to keep the bailiffs from the door.
Having strayed off his turf on a mission to help out a girl, McKay finds himself facing a friend’s crazy ex-boyfriend, a group of kids on a power trip, and a violent gangster with a vendetta close to home.

Studiocanal has revealed the brand spanking new red band trailer for ‘Wicked Little Letters’, the razor-sharp British comedy from director Thea Sharrock.
Based on a true story, a 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, the feature follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and her fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women – led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) – begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Steve McQueen Chronicles Amsterdam’s Nazi Oppression in Trailer for Epic Doc ‘Occupied City’ (Video)
The past and present collide in the first trailer for Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” and “Widows” filmmaker Steve McQueen’s epic and acclaimed documentary “Occupied City.”
Based on the book “Atlas of an Occupied City” by McQueen’s wife Bianca Stigter, the four-hour film offers two interlocking portraits: a vivid journey through the last years of pandemic and protest, and a door-to-door excavation of the Nazi occupation that still haunts his adopted city. What emerges, according to the official synopsis, is “both devastating and life-affirming, an expansive meditation on memory, time, and where we’re headed.”
The A24 film – which opens in theaters on Dec. 25 – drew raves when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and its release is unfortunately coming at a time when antisemitism is front and center.

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).
Possible Golden Globes newcomer Fishback stars on Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm” as Dre Greene, a mentally unstable young woman whose unhealthy obsession with a Beyoncé-esque pop star drives a wedge between her and her foster sister,...

Exclusive: Small Axe star Shaniqua Okwok has criticized The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama for paying lip service to anti-discrimination pledges after the prestigious UK drama school failed to say whether it disciplined a teacher accused of a “racist incident.”
Okwok, one of Royal Central’s most successful recent graduates, made a formal complaint against a teacher after they allegedly demanded that she embrace her “inherited trauma” and play a slave during an acting exercise in 2015.
Deadline can reveal that the complaint was upheld last year and Royal Central apologized to Okwok, but for confidentiality reasons, she was not told if the lecturer faced any consequences. The individual remains in post as a lecturer at the school, which boasts alumni including Judi Dench and Kit Harrington. The teacher did not respond to a request for comment.

Back in the fall of 2003, Femi Oguns — then a working British actor who had appeared in a number of well-known U.K. TV shows — was on the streets of London handing out flyers for his yet-to-open school.
Having felt that his own experience at drama school had been stifled due to his race (he was one of just two non-white students in his year) and that there was a distinct lack of diverse talent in such institutions and a major gap in the market, he decided to launch a part-time alternative. It was to be somewhere, says Oguns — the eldest son of a British-born Nigerian mother and a Nigerian immigrant father — that would give “actors of color and from all different backgrounds the opportunity to celebrate their identity through acting.”
And so, having parked his own on-screen ambitions (although he would star alongside Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect soon after...

Plot: A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.
Review: Certain filmmakers come along that define a style of movie-making that turns their name into a descriptor. In recent years, Jordan Peele has become the benchmark against which many genre films have been compared, especially when they focus on the Black experience. Storytellers like Donald Glover and Boots Riley have come close to earning similar name recognition as Peele. Now, we can add Juel Taylor to the list. They Cloned Tyrone, Taylor’s directorial debut, is a smart science fiction tale wrapped in a comedic allegory that blends blaxploitation with a contemporary flair for a truly unique movie. With yet another stellar leading turn by John Boyega, They Cloned Tyrone showcases great turns from Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris for the weirdest movie of the summer.

Daniel Francis, who starred in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology series and is among the new faces joining the third season of Netflix hit Bridgerton, has been cast in upcoming horror thriller film Don’t Move from Sam Raimi’s Raimi Productions, Christian Mercuri’s Capstone Studios and Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios.
Led by Kelsey Asbille (Yellowstone, Fargo, Wind River) and Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story, The Big Short, La La Land), whose casting was announced by The Hollywood Reporter in Cannes, the movie follows a seasoned killer who injects a grieving woman with a paralytic agent. She must run, fight and hide before her body completely shuts down. THR understands that Francis, who also starred in Netflix’s Harlan Coben thriller Stay Close, will play a police officer in the feature, being directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, who recently helmed episodes of Raimi’s horror anthology series 50 States of Fright.

Any questions regarding whether Steve McQueen’s WWII drama, “Blitz,” will compete at this year’s Academy Awards can be put to rest. Following the Cannes premiere of “Occupied City,” McQueen’s four-and-a-half-hour documentary about Amsterdam under Nazi rule, festival head Thierry Frémaux, per World of Reel, said the movie will likely play the Croisette in 2024.
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham, “Blitz,” which just began post-production, is steeped in the same historical milieu as “Occupied City” and takes place on the ground with Londoners during Germany’s aerial-bombing campaign against Great Britain. While it would’ve been exciting to see the two projects released alongside each other – a quasi-“Flags of Our Fathers”/“Letters From Iwo Jima” pairing, if you will – a 2024 release makes logistical sense for Apple, which no doubt has its hands full this year with Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” (premiering...

We walk among ghosts in cities, storied urban constructs with layers of misty memories one can sense in their distinct smells, and perceive in their dated cracks and imperfections. There are hundreds of thousands of such ghosts that haunt Steve McQueen’s audacious documentary essay “Occupied City,” a 2023 Cannes premiere that is as much a hypnotizing and cumulatively disquieting cinematic artifact about the Holocaust and World War II-era Amsterdam as it is a stubbornly single-minded historical art installation.
The simplest way to describe “Occupied City” would be calling it an extensive guided tour of Amsterdam’s past that uses Bianca Stigter’s book, “Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945)” as a compass. McQueen’s camera travels through 130 specific addresses in the present-day of his adopted town. Let’s call it near-present-day to be exact — “Occupied City” strolls through the Dutch capital mostly during the earliest days of the Covid lockdown,...

Gillian Anderson and multi-award-winning actor Jason Isaacs have joined the cast on ‘The Salt Path.’ An adaptation of Raynor Winn’s global bestselling memoir.
The movie is the profound true story of husband and wife, Raynor and Moth Winn’s 630-mile trek along the beautiful but rugged Cornish, Devon and Dorset coastline. After being forcibly removed from their home, they make the desperate decision to keep walking in the hope that, in nature, they will find solace and a sense of acceptance. With depleted resources and only a tent and the bare essentials between them, every step along the path is a testament to their growing strength and determination. The story is a journey that is exhilarating, challenging, and liberating in equal measure. A portrayal of home and how it can be lost and rediscovered in the most unexpected ways.

As many reviews of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe have noted, the miniseries derives its somewhat unusual title from a West Indian proverb made popular in a Bob Marley song: “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.” This pithy adage evokes, with a tone of striking confidence, the central theme of McQueen’s ambitious five-part anthology of stories—namely, the struggle of London’s West Indian community against the forces of institutional racism, state repression, and police violence.
Keep chipping away at these unjust structures of dominance for long enough, McQueen’s miniseries more than suggests, and eventually they’ll fall to the ground. But it would be easy to miss a key word embedded in that proverb, one which is central not only to the thematic basis of Small Axe, but to its very construction: “we.”

Cannes Lineup Roars
Few surprises: Zac Ntim here reporting on Cannes …Cannes General Delegate Thierry Frémaux announced 52 titles Thursday morning that will debut at the festival’s 76th edition, which runs May 16-27 on the Riviera. There were few surprises in the Official Competition lineup, with festival favorites such as Wes Anderson, Ken Loach, Nanni Moretti and Hirokazu Kore-eda vying for the Palme d’Or alongside long-rumored entries from Alice Rohrwacher, Jonathan Glazer and Aki Kaurismäki. The festival did, however, clock six films with women filmmakers playing in competition, a new record for Cannes. With 19 competition titles announced, however, six still remains far below that elusive 50% parity mark. Progress has been slow. This year’s...

The year 2015 was a time of great hope in the "Star Wars" fandom. The long-awaited sequel trilogy was upon us, with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford reprising their beloved characters in a galaxy far, far away. Just as exciting (if not more so) were the young heroes slated to make their debut in the film, and in doing so, usher in a more inclusive age of "Star Wars" storytelling. As played by Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), these new additions proved to be instantly lovable and buoyed by amazing screen chemistry -- so much so it had us shipping them after but a handful of scenes together.
That was before the dark times. Before the divisive fan response to "The Last Jedi" and the subsequent box office failure of "Solo" left Lucasfilm scrambling, culminating in "The Rise of Skywalker," a film that...

Among the Emmy categories that “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is looking to get nominated in, Best Movie/Limited Actor for its star Daniel Radcliffe is right at the top along with Best TV Movie. The Roku Channel’s hit telefilm may seem like an unconventional nominee, but there are several promising factors that are working in his favor.
The fact that the movie is a flat-out comedy could be viewed as something of an obstacle for it to overcome. But, performances from comedic-dramas have scored noms here, including Jeff Bridges for “A Dog Year” (2010) and Hugh Grant for “A Very English Scandal” (2019). We have also seen three comedy performances contend in this category: two for Ricky Gervais for “Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale” (2008) and “Derek: The Special” (2015) and one for Jesse Plemons for “Black Mirror: USS Callister” (2018).

After a successful awards season, “Triangle of Sadness” is one of several films being added to The Criterion Collection this month.
Directed by the irreverent Swedish satirist Ruben Östlund, the film follows two supermodels on a doomed luxury cruise that leaves the pair stranded on a deserted island along with some of their fellow passengers and a Marxist captain. The film was last year’s Palme d’Or winner and went on to receive nods for best picture, best director and best original screenplay at the 2023 Oscars.
“The thing about Östlund is that he makes you laugh, but he also makes you think,” Variety film critic Peter DeBruge wrote in his review. “There’s a meticulous precision to the way he constructs, blocks and executes scenes — a kind of agonizing unease,...
