“Dunkirk” making the shortlist was the biggest no-brainer, as a Christopher Nolan film has won the Best Visual Effects Oscar twice in the last seven years: “Interstellar” in 2014 and “Inception” in 2010. With just ninety days to go before the annual event, ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that the 90th Oscars telecast, set for Sunday, March 4, 2018, will now begin a full half-hour earlier than years past, kicking off at 8:00Pm Est/5:00Pm Pst. Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the awards show, with producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd also returning to the broadcast.
The earlier start time will offer up the awards show a little more cushion when it comes to getting down to business, and can hopefully also provide both viewers and guests with the relief of an earlier end time. In years past, the ceremony has pushed way past the four-hour mark (the longest show to-date still stands at four hours and twenty-three minutes in 2002), even as most cable operators and stations schedule just three hours of content for Hollywood’s biggest event.

Starting now and leading up to the 90th annual Oscars, I will be updating these awards futures monthly, offering my final predictions in each category next month (ahead of the nominations announcement on Jan. 23) and breaking down the frontrunners as well as who should and will win in the following months. This round is all about who's fully in the race -- and who's going to need to do a bit of catching up.

Just a few days after the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film I find it enormously hard to remember a single scene. Kevin Spacey’s Oscar chances, obliterated. Dustin Hoffman’s, gone. While we don’t yet have the hashtag, March 4, 2018 will be remembered as the year that the issue of sexual harassment took center stage at the Dolby Theatre.
If one of the historical perks of Hollywood stardom was the ability to misbehave without consequences, those days are over. Sony pulled Ridley Scott’s AFI Fest closer “All the Money in the World,” which was primed for an awards campaign around Spacey, now accused of multiple instances of sexual harassment and abuse.
While Hoffman presented a Hollywood Film Award Sunday night, it’s unlikely that his crusty New York patriarch will be in the running for “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” after multiple harassment claims — in addition to Meryl Streep’s own account of how he introduced himself by grabbing her breast. (Streep will move into Oscar mode as...

Wherever Harvey Weinstein finds himself on March 4, he won't be at the 90th Academy Awards. But that doesn't mean that this year's awards season will, for the first time in years, be Weinstein-free. The fallout from the scandal and the other cases that have emerged in its wake won't end anytime soon, as the film industry is forced to confront both widespread sexual harassment and the surrounding issue of gender discrimination.
While dozens of movies are waiting to vie for attention, the usual early awards-season buzz has been drowned out by the voices of women (and some men)rising...

Savannah Film Fest: 10 Top Documentary Oscar Contenders on the Good, Bad and Ugly Sides of Their Art
This year, a record 170 documentary features have been deemed eligible for the best documentary feature prize that will be presented at the 90th Oscars on March 4. Before a winner is crowned, though, the Academy's documentary branch must first pick a shortlist of 15 films from which five nominees will be chosen (nominations in all categories will be revealed on Jan. 23). Since few doc branch members have the time to see all of the eligible titles, the Scad Savannah Film Festival, for the past four years, has offered a little bit of help by highlighting 10 standouts as...

An Oscar movie could hit theaters at any time during the year -- as far as the rules are concerned, it only needs to be released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to be eligible -- but everyone knows that all of the true contenders arrive in the last quarter of the year.
I suppose some Academy-worthy movies have already been released: Dunkirk, right? The Big Sick and Get Out less likely, but perhaps! I guess some people believe Wonder Woman could really get a Best Picture nomination.... So, instead of considering this our first round of Oscar predictions, think of it as a Ones to Watch list to prepare you as studios start showing off their films that could earn noms at next year's Academy Awards. (Which are still five months away, Fyi, on March 4, 2018.)
