Bloody Disgusting has been provided with a first look snippet from the upcoming indie genre movie Spirit Riser this afternoon, giving us a taste of a completely unrecognizable Whitney Moore as the film’s “Man from the Dark and Lonely Place.”
Directed by Dylan Mars Greenberg, Spirit Riser is said to be a “genre-bending fantasy with elements of horror, comedy, action, surrealism, and martial arts.”
Check out the exclusive first look clip below.
Spirit Riser features a cast that also includes Lynn Lowry, Amanda Flowers, and Kansas Bowling. And the film is narrated by Michael Madsen (The Hateful Eight).
The press release previews, “Under the skilled hands of makeup experts Edwin Monzon and Cici Andersen, Moore underwent a radical transformation using prosthetics that turned her into the terrifying, gaunt-faced male character central to the film’s enigmatic narrative.”

It’s been almost two years since Valve released their powerful Steam Deck handheld console. Since then, it’s been clear that Steam Deck verification has been a priority selling point for games of all sizes.
If you’re looking to take your horror on the go, here are eight games that will run on the Steam Deck.
Faith: The Unholy Trinity
PS1 visuals may be hot right now in the indie space, but Faith: The Unholy Trinity finds visual and mechanical inspiration from 8-bit gaming. The pixelated visuals resemble an Atari 2600 game, featuring rotoscoped animations that are truly chilling. I’m surprised more games don’t feature Satanic Panic and exorcism, because Faith finds clever ways to translate the ritual into gameplay. Its simple mechanics run perfectly on a handheld system, so this feels like discovering some sort of cursed Game Boy cartridge that will haunt your dreams.

The Rolling Stones have plenty of great albums. Many made them incredibly popular during the late 1960s, even compared to their main rival, The Beatles. However, Mick Jagger doesn’t look fondly back on one album, which he believes only has “two good songs.”
‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’ received mixed reviews upon its release Mick Jagger | Paras Griffin/Getty Images
Their Satanic Majesties Request is the sixth British and eighth American studio album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1967. The album sees the band experimenting with a more psychedelic sound, incorporating unique elements like sound effects and African rhythms.
Upon its release, the album was met with mixed reviews from critics. While many acknowledged it had a few good songs, the album didn’t work as a whole for many, and the psychedelic sound felt out of place for the Stones. However, Their Satanic Majesties Request was still a successful album,...

The ABC sitcom Modern Family wrapped up its 11 season run back in 2020, and now cast member Julie Bowen – who played the character Claire Dunphy on 250 episodes of the show – has signed on to star in a new series. And this one is no sitcom. Deadline reports that Bowen is set to star in the coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series Hysteria!, which is set up at the Peacock streaming service.
Written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! will be exploring America’s dark history of mass hysteria through the shocking story of the teenage Satanic Panic. In the final episode of the seminal high school TV comedy-drama Freaks And Geeks, titled ‘Discos and Dragons’, teenage nerd Sam Weir (played by John Francis Daley) is fed up. “I'm sick of being called a geek,” he complains to his friends. “I mean, what's so geeky about us, anyways? We're just guys.” Then, with perfect comic timing, his equally nerdy friend Harris (Stephen Lea Sheppard) approaches him in the school corridor and announces: “Gentlemen. Good news! New Dungeons & Dragons handbook. ‘Deities And Demigods’. We’re gonna have a fun Friday night!”
Criminally cancelled in 2000 after just one season, Freaks And Geeks was at the time perhaps the most accurate on-screen depiction of the fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. For a long time, D&d — with its high fantasy tropes, its fair maidens, its complex magic, its many-sided dice and its opaque, labyrinthine rules — seemed solely the domain of geeks.

One of the experts interviewed in Satan Wants You, a disturbingly compelling documentary making its world premiere at SXSW, points out that, today, the 1980s cultural phenomenon known as the “Satanic Panic” is seen as a joke. Bands of Satanists kidnapping children and eating babies? Ok, such talk is not ha-ha funny. But with the passage of time we can certainly call such accusations absurd. In the moment there was nothing funny about it, and results for many falsely accused individuals were devastating.
In Satan Wants You, directors Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams lay the blame on two fascinating individuals: Michelle Smith and Dr. Lawrence Pazder. In 1980, the native of Victoria, British Columbia, and her psychiatrist (Pazder) released the book Michelle Remembers, whose cover teased readers with the following description: “The true story of a year-long contest between innocence and evil.” Smith’s account of childhood Satanic ritual abuse...

Premiering at SXSW, Satan Wants You is a new documentary from directors Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams that’s set to explore the infamous “Satanic Panic” wave of the 1980s.
Satan Wants You tells the untold story of how the Satanic Panic of the 1980s was ignited by “Michelle Remembers,” a lurid memoir by psychiatrist Larry Pazder and his patient Michelle Smith. Supported by the Catholic Church, the bestselling book relied on recovered-memory therapy to uncover Michelle’s childhood abduction by baby-stealing Satanists.
Amplified by law enforcement and America’s Daytime TV boom, satanic rumors spread through panic-stricken communities across the world, leaving a wave of destruction and wrongful convictions in their wake. This film digs deep into the roots of moral panics and cult conspiracies, showing how these events still affect and distort our reality today.

With the rise of the internet culture and positive exposure in shows like Stranger Things, Role-Playing Games have acquired a reputation as a fun hobby that virtually anyone can enjoy. Of course, it wasn’t always this way. There was a time when weekend warriors and wizards were frowned upon by society, with these innocent gamers becoming associated with crime and the occult during the infamous “Satanic Panic” – “Stranger Things 4” touched upon this very thing.
Believing that young gamers are secretly devil worshippers simply because they enjoy getting together to collectively tell fantasy stories about slaying monsters in faraway lands is obviously ridiculous, but old-school Dungeons & Dragons did in fact have plenty of horrific inspirations behind the game. That’s why it makes sense that some sensitive teachers and parents might have been scared off by the manual’s allusions to the horror genre.
And with Hollywood once again...

Mallrats 2
Smith’s 1995 film Mallrats wasn’t a box office success, but that hasn’t stopped talk of a sequel coming up here and there over the years – whether it would be a “Die Hard in a Mall” scenario, a limited series, or something completely different. The problem is that Mallrats is a Universal property, so Smith can’t do anything with it unless the studio is on board.

Author Grady Hendrix released his second novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism back in 2016, which he describes as “Beaches meets The Exorcist.” Set in the late ’80s during the so-called Satanic Panic, it’s a touching story of high school friendship and, well, demonic possession. A movie adaptation is on the way, debuting on Amazon Prime Video on September 30, 2022.
Elsie Fisher (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eighth Grade) and Amiah Miller star in the film, directed by Damon Thomas (“Penny Dreadful”). Watch Amazon’s official trailer for My Best Friend’s Exorcism down below, a blast of ’80s nostalgia with a side of demonic possession!
“The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Salman Rushdie’s alleged assailant has claimed he has only ever read two pages of the author’s novel The Satanic Verses.
Hadi Matar has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and assault, after the incident a week ago, when the Booker prize-winning author was stabbed on stage at a conference where he was about to talk about free speech. Matar has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Iran-supporting extremist is being held in jail, from where he gave an interview to The New York Post, in which:
He said he had only read two pages of The Satanic Verses, Rushdie’s 1988 novel that caused Iran’s then leader to declare a fatwa against him. Matar did not confirm his alleged actions were driven by the fatwa, saying only that he respected the Ayatollah – “he’s a great person” – and that Rushdie was “someone who attacked Islam.” He said...

After six seasons and two spin-off shows, "Riverdale" has gone from being the tale of an idyllic small town with a seedy underbelly to a saga about the cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil, pitting himbo-next-door Archie Andrews and his friends against serial killers, evil nuns, cult leaders, and, most recently, warlocks from other dimensions. In that sense, the series has lived up to its promise of being "Archie Comics meets 'Twin Peaks'" in ways that nobody could have predicted when its premiered on The CW in 2017.
As the show prepares to head into its seventh and final season, "Riverdale" creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is already filling up his docket with future projects. In fact, he only just co-created HBO Max's "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin," the latest addition to the "Pretty Little Liars" property — itself a shared universe almost as deliciously outlandish and murder-happy as the Archie-verse.

There are enough gripping and disturbing stories partially told in FX’s Children of the Underground to keep the five-part documentary series watchable, with a unifying argument made sufficiently to be persuasive.
At the same time, it’s a documentary about a moment of moral and legal chaos that confuses narrative messiness with narrative ambiguity. Children of the Underground is marred by inconsistent sourcing, a lack of overall focus and the fact that its overarching thesis, however convincing it may be, is forgotten entirely through most of the series’ journey.
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) and Ted Gesing, Children of the Underground is ostensibly the story of Faye Yager, who parlayed her experiences with a legal system unprepared to deal with family accusations of sexual abuse into a vigilante network designed to protect mothers and children from predatory fathers too often protected by the courts.

A movie adaptation is on the way, debuting on Amazon Prime Video on September 30, […]

January just got a whole lot better–and stranger. Only a year after Mandy, Nicolas Cage is back with another acclaimed gonzo feature, this time entering a world perfectly fitting for the actor, that of H.P. Lovecraft. Directed by Richard Stanley, Color Out of Space finds Cage’s character and his family as strange happenings occur when a meteorite touches down on their farm. Following its Tiff premiere and ahead of its January release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Josh Lewis said in our Tiff review, “Stanley approaches this narrative with a true sense of wackiness, really leaning into the ridiculousness of the daughter riding her horse through ancient New England forests with Satanic tattoos like she’s in an 80s fantasy film or Cage yelling about milking Alpacas at the local water surveyor for some reason. No people would act the way they do in this film and...

Hammer’s key Satanic Mass epic comes to Blu-ray in a terrific improved transfer. Christopher Lee’s pitched battle with Charles Gray’s necromancer Mocata has long been a favorite of fans of symbolist rituals with candles, magic circles, Christian icons, etc. We’re happy to report that after all the monstrous demons and human sacrifices, good prevails through the agency of an ordinary housewife, who can sling a Latin incantation faster than you can say ‘The Goat of Mendes.’ This is yet another big-deal Hammer disc for 2019 — we also get a look at the earlier Blu-ray with its revised special effects.

46 years on from its release, “The Exorcist” is not exactly a film that wants for analysis; it’s also not a film people are likely to stop analyzing any time soon. William Friedkin’s horror masterclass is, well, just that: one of its genre’s most irresistibly teachable works, with a clear, clean command of form and theme that lends itself to limitless scholarly scrutiny and interpretation. Alexandre O. Philippe’s simply styled documentary “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on ‘The Exorcist'” has a lot more of that to offer;Essentially a single interview with Friedkin interspersed with repeatedly revisited clips, “Leap of Faith” chiefly examines — per its title — the film’s spiritual allusions and illusions, distinguishing it from just any old making-of doc.
Not that you’d expect anything quite so standard from Philippe, the Swiss filmmaker who has carved out his own auteurist niche in the realm of cinema-studies documentary,...

Roald Dahl’s marvelous horror thriller for children (the ones ready for it) knows exactly what it is and doesn’t soft-pedal the scary stuff. Horrible (but sexy) witches plot the wholesale destruction of Hansels and Gretels everywhere, and the only kid that can stop them has been changed into a mouse. Nicolas Roeg runs wild with Dahl’s imaginative, refreshingly un-pc book; the usual softening touches are skipped in favor of unadulterated scarifying Fun. It couldn’t be better directed; we wish that Roeg had been able to create a dozen such outrageous fantasies. Star Anjelica Huston is an amazing Grand High Witch, with Mai Zetterling, Anne Lambton and Jane Horrocks providing able witchy support. Recommended!

In a year of unearthed and cursed films another one has come to our attention after it was recovered by an Italian collector and restored for distribution. Screen Anarchy has an exclusive look at the new trailer for the 1973 cursed film Opera Mortem. Fari warning, footage in this trailer is indeed very extreme and pardon our French, fucked. David Fleas' film Opera Mortem can be called a number of things; Avant Garde, experimental, and likely Satanic. According to our sources they saw a clip of Opera Mortem when it was played at Sadique Master Festival in Paris, France. Then a fire broke out in the projection booth, delaying the following film's premiere by an hour. That is not the worst of it. According...

The old joke goes that the way one gets to Carnegie Hall is practice; while this is also a truism that can be applied to any tenet of life, it’s particularly ironic in The Mephisto Waltz (1971): yes, hard work is great, but it’s much easier to just have Satan put a concert pianist’s soul in your body to achieve your dreams. Not as funny, but easier.
The Mephisto Waltz (based on the novel of the same name by Fred Mustard Stewart) danced onto screens in early June to scathing reviews and tepid box office; even its support group find fault with key elements (we’ll get to the grievances in a bit) all these years later. I would say they are correct except I find the film works well enough despite its issues; truth be told there aren’t many Satanic flicks I don’t like,...

Beware and tread lightly, as Satan has once again erupted from the bowels of Hell to let loose another firestorm of insidious worship, gratuitous nudity and gore! Well, we’re in the ‘70s and he never really left anyway; the box office was very kind to the Horned One in that decade, and Vinegar Syndrome has polished up another one for a sparkling Blu-ray release, Satan’s Slave (1976).
This film was Norman J. Warren’s first horror outing after helming a couple of nudie flicks in the late ‘60s; a sign of the times, a lot of directors entered through the green door before seeking the slightly more reputable terror genre. Of the Warren’s I’ve seen (which is admittedly few), Satan’s Slave is the most accomplished and controlled, and a welcome addition to the coven of Satanic horror.

Apollo 11 (Todd Douglas Miller)
On July 16, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin embarked on a historic lunar odyssey, successfully landing on the moon and then returning to Earth. Free of talking heads, reenactments, and newly-recorded narration, the new documentary Apollo 11 takes viewers on this nine-day journey, constructed from astounding, never-before-seen 65mm Panavision, 35mm, and 16mm footage, as well as audio culled from over 18,000 hours of tapes. A perhaps initially unintended result when Nasa handed over this remarkably pristine footage to director Todd Douglas Miller, his documentary is also a fascinating time capsule of this specific era. – Jordan R. Nestled somewhere in the Evil Doll Hall of Fame between Chuckie and The Twilight Zone‘s Talky Tina, the Conjuring franchise’s resident Satanic toy has enough industry juice to have knocked out three spin-off movies — not bad for a scene-stealing porcelain figure originally used as a supernatural conduit by a Manson-lite cult. On True Detective Season 3, True Criminal's producer follows a Crooked Spiral from Carcosa to True Detective Season 1
True Detective Season 3 Episode 7 “The Final Country,” crosses over to season 1 through a close-up shot of an article headlined “Former State Police Officers Stop Alleged Serial Killer.” The photo accompanying the piece shows the detectives who solved the case are Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson). The investigation suggests a much larger and darker conspiracy than a backwoods serial killer.
A group of connected and powerful men may have gotten away with a series of heinous crimes. “The Final Country” ends on a note of possible collusion between Detective Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali) and a possible suspect in a similar unpunished crime, the wealthy and connected Edward Hoyt. Any kind of deal between this cop and that criminal, however coerced, would constitute the biggest betrayal the series ever offered.

Tagline: "Be Careful What You Pray For." We Summon the Darkness is a horror thriller from director Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer). Production on this feature began last year, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Currently in post-production, the film was scheduled to show at last year's Toronto International Film Festival. Now, a new film poster is available for the film, courtesy of the Highland Film Group. The graphic shows many of the film's central players, including: Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch), Maddie Hasson ("Impulse"), Keean Johnson (Alita: Battle Angel) and Johnny Knoxville. A trailer is coming soon. For now, fans of horror can find the latest on We Summon the Darkness here. The film involves a series of Satanic murders, in the Midwest. Three friends head out on a road trip and they meet several interesting blokes, at a heavy metal music festival. Back at the girlfriend's family home, the afterparty turns into a night of bloody debauchery.

Amusingly, Penny Lane’s documentary Hail Satan? is interested in clarifying one critical misconception about the Satanic Temple: its members don’t, in fact, worship the Devil at all. Rather, the organization—or religion, as they’d prefer to be called—is, essentially, an ultimately altruistic group of people, typically self-proclaimed misfits, who wish to highlight the double standards of the so-called separation of church and state—all while co-opting Satanic iconography to get a rise out of Christian conservatives.
Why Lucifer? Well… why not? Optically, it’s undeniably more rock-and-roll to have “Satanists” counter-protesting an anti-choice rally than it is to describe them as a bunch of godless activists, and Temple co-founder Lucien Greaves–not his real name—seems to delight in stirring the metaphorical pot, even if his demeanor is disarmingly calm.
Lane’s heads-up interviews with Greaves and other Temple members structures the film, but it’s...

Over 45 years later, The Exorcist is still remembered as one of the all-time great horror movies, while the sequel has yet to escape its reputation as a colossal disappointment. In fact, William Friedkin, director of the classic 1973 original, seems to have more disgust than ever for Exorcist II: The Heretic, sharing his recollection of the 1977 film when he appeared on The Movies that Made Me podcast.
Though Friedkin has never seen the follow-up in full, he did catch some footage while the sequel was still in post-production, and to say that he wasn’t impressed would be a serious understatement:
“I tell you, I did see a great deal of Exorcist II, under the following circumstances. I was at the Technicolor lab, color timing something, and one of the timers said, ‘We just finished Exorcist II, would you like to have a look at it?’ And I don’t know why,...

Three months have passed since that fleeting, anonymous New York Times op-ed from a Trump staffer claiming that she or he was busy trying to save us from the president’s agenda and “his worst inclinations.” The piece was largely useless, but it was entertaining. Conservatives who have remained silent about Republican disenfranchisement were inspired, in their own way, to defend voting rights.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca), the House Majority Leader, declared in a letter to the Times that the writer was “thwarting the wishes of the legitimately elected president from within the executive branch.

Exorcist II: The Heretic is not without its defenders, but these fans are far outweighed by the number of viewers who consider it a monstrous disappointment after the classic 1973 original, with even the first film’s helmsman, William Friedkin, last year calling the 1977 sequel “ridiculous and stupid.”

The true origin of King Paimon, a demonic force in Hereditary, predates much of Christianity, which coopted the djini spirit.
This article contains Hereditary spoilers.
The demon King Paimon can grant many wishes, but you don’t want to rub him the wrong way.
2018’s scariest new film, Hereditary, is conjuring so many comparisons to Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, and it seems like a Luciferian conspiracy. This is because Satanic cinema is ultimately scarier than any other monster films unless you count based-on-real-life political thrillers or the impending doom of Legally Blonde 3.
Devil movies scare the shit out of people because they mine a collective subconscious for its most revered derisions. Every follower of every faith, and that includes most people who opted out to become agnostics, atheists, or nihilists, was messed up in their very infancy by the religion they were born into.
