Screw that. It's time. Let's set Negan on these guys.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was good, but then the final few minutes hit the audience like a bus. The reveal of who got piked was heart-wrenching, especially Enid, Henry, and Tara (The latter of whom's death hit me the hardest. She had come a long way since the Governor, and her alliance with Glenn to find Maggie). It has been quite a while since this show has shocked me like this. I think the last time I was this shocked was when Negan killed Glenn and Abraham.

Speaking of the Devil...considering these massive deaths, I think it's time to unleash the group's greatest secret weapon...Negan himself. Let him call some shots, let him do what he does best. Screw it, it's game time.

Warning: Spoilers
This is what "Last Day on Earth" & "The Time Will Come When You Wont be" should have been.

Let me take you back to Season 6 Episode 16, one of the lowest rated episodes of the show for known reasons. In my own opinion, that episode was a genius presentation on how to make an audience have a heart-pounding tense experience, the suspenful soundtrack playing in the background, the fear for Maggie's life, the repeated blocking of roads, and finally, the feeling of helplessness that the line-up scene brought to the audience, ending with that unfortunate cliffhanger *that I myself didn't mind much but was still pissed off on how it was excuted* For me, that episode is on my list of the best TV episodes of all time.

Now moving forward to Season 7 Episode 1, where they counted heavly on flashbacks to bring back that feeling of unease again to the audience, in addition to the fact that everyone had been waiting for 6 months to find out who got killed.

You see, the reason I bring both of these episodes up, is because I believe tonight's episode was the perfect representation of how they should have dealt with Glenn & Abrahams deaths back then. Through out this extended episode, your heart is pounding, you know *wether you read the comics or not* that something is going to happen, the genius excution of making you feel uneasy is back again, but this time, ohh boy, this time they did it 10 times better. I was crushed, I am still crushed, in all honesty I am not even aware if I am making a point with this review or not, I just want to vent, there is this feeling in my chest that I only feel on rare occasions.

They did it so well! Part of me is sad that not a lot of people got to see how TWD is still very much alive, it's still one of the best TV shows out there. This scene is on the same level as Marvel's desentegration scene in my opinion. I hope this episode brings back people to watch the show again. I don't think I'll be able to do anything today other than depressing over this episode.

I have never watched a show that got so bad and ended up being resurrected so beautifully

I loved the show from season one and stuck with it amongst all the unnecessary hate. Until season 7 and 8 came along which destroyed the series for me. However... this season has been absolutely phenomenal and I really didn't think it would survive without rick but it has and it's so juicy and glorious

This episode absolutely brought the love back for the show. You felt like you were standing alongside the characters again and it was beautiful. The cinematography, the dialogue, the music were all so perfect and grounded in the story. This season has made me fear the walkers again so hats off to Kang and the writers for being able to do that thanks to the threat of the whisperers. The show has a real purpose again and this episode soldified that. I really want them to re-do season 7 and 8 with Kang at the helm

I am blown away at how TWD continues to be so amazing 9 seasons in. "The Calm Before" is an incredible episode from start to finish. The reveal at the end is arguably the most haunting moment in the history of the show and will leave you with your mouth hung open in shock and horror. 9x15 is one of my favorite TWD episodes of all time and I personally think it's one of the best too.

The Best Episode of TWD
colinw-8434425 March 2019
Enough said in the title. I've never cried or shaken about a television show before but I did tonight, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Quite possibly the pinnacle of a 10/10 episode.

So What Did We Learn Tonight?
sevenlilxenos25 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Managing to live as long as 5 years as a Red Shirt in the ZA is quite an accomplishment even if celebrating the anniversary doesn't last very long.

Giving Tara a needed history lesson helps to keep her ego in check.

Kings get to sign their names bigger than other people do.

Dunk tanks double as a weekly bath for guys like Eugene. Fairs are fun even if Jerry doesn't read the updates. Speeches about Rick can be as long and drawn out as Rick's speeches.

Teenage angst, love triangles, third wheels can get sorted out with goat droppings.

Beta doesn't ask twice. Strange he didn't at least punch Daryl a few times.

Do you ever wonder if all these time jumps are "have to" or "want to"?

Alpha cleans up really well and shows a Trojan horse can come in many forms.

Vlad The Impaler hasn't got anything on Alpha who gave all her victims a nice view of flowers from on top of the hill. They even put Addy's glasses back on her head after all the fighting and beheadings?

Can't help but feel a lil cheated that we didn't actually get to see Henry's death as his actions led to so many others losing their lives.

When Alpha told Ezekiel she "looked forward to meeting Carol" were they foreshadowing who will kill Alpha, especially now she beheaded Henry?

Even though every so often the herd needs thinning, I always thought Tammy Rose was too mean to die and Enid too sweet. Tara's death was surprising after they kept her through her IRL pregnancy which just goes to show you never know what to expect. I wonder if Henry final learned his lesson now.

Seeing a few thousand Walkers can make one change their perspective, seeing Alpha cry can cost you dearly.

If Lydia felt less than welcome before, what now, send her to Oceanside already.

They set the stage for a movie and a concert, now it appears to be set for an inevitable big snowy showdown with the Whisperers and a couple thousand Walkers. PLEASE tell me Negan will be involved.

So much merchandising, when can I buy an Enid head on a stick paper weight?

A great ending can raise an 8 episode to a 9 (in this viewers opinion).

Gonna Be a Hard Winter
ThomasDrufke25 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There are certain game changing moments in TV shows like this that can only be described as monumental shifts in tone or story. Say, The Red Wedding or even the death of Need Stark for example on Game of Thrones. With Walking Dead, Negans arrival is certainly one, but this episode is the same sort of deal. Major deaths and a huge shift for many characters to say the least.

I had heard rumblings through articles over the years and spending a lot of time in comment sections, that The Whisperer War and arrival of Alpha on TWD was something to behold, and contained deadly consequences, I just wasn't exactly sure how it would be different from past 'big moments' on the show.

The direction from Laura Belsey couldn't have been better, and that really derives from the powerhouse turn from Samantha Morton's performance as Alpha. Absolutely terrifying. To see her assume the role of Deborah and walk around the Fair was something out of a horror movie. And to see the outcome of her visit be the deaths of many characters, including Enid, Henry, and Tara? Wow. My jaw was at the floor.

Some choices puzzle me
fernandodelamadrid28 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked the episode, and the season in general. I felt it was an improvement compared to the latest few seasons. This one was fun, interesting, disturbing at times. As a fan of the comic, i kinda felt like they were trying to realign the show to the comic storyline. They pulled Rick into helicopter-limbo, and started shifting focus to Daryl. Ok, they killed Carl, so they have Henry filling the role. They even gave him his whole whisperers/Lydia storyline. And 10 minutes later, the kid is gone. WHAT?! WHY?! Just for shock value? I get that the show doesn't necessarily follow the comic, but my problem is: it usually is for the worst. There are cool stories in the future, and they involve people who is not around anymore. I'll keep watching, mostly because the comic has finished, and because Carol and Daryl are fun and badass.

Also, love Dog. Touch Dog and you lost me forever.

Amazing episode

Warning: Spoilers
There are people on here saying "How can they review it before it airs". The fact is that people with AMC premiere can watch the episode a week early. I absolutely enjoyed this episode. After reading the comics I was expecting a really huge surprise death. There were a few in this episode. Tara's death was definitely surprising. The most surprising death was Henry, which really begs the question, "How will they continue the 'Carl' storyline". They really made Alpha an unlikable character. I am really excited to see her die. All together this was an amazing episode.

Warning: Spoilers
This show gets rid of all the wrong people every time they want to throw in a shock factor. They know if they killed off Carol or Daryl the remaining viewers will jump ship. Honestly I do not understand how this show continues it's very predictable. I knew Enid was going to die this season before it started. I also knew they would kill off Tara as both these women have been the least liked the pass few seasons especially after Tara's one off episode with Seaside a few seasons ago. Enid was set up to be Carl's love interest and after he died she was no longer needed honestly. Everyone is treating this like GOT's Red Wedding episode but its nothing like it not as shocking. The viewers have dropped so much compared to seasons 7 and it's clear why. I dont care how many stans downvote my review it'll just prove my point. That the real zombies are not the walking dead in the show, it's the viewers when they turn their brain off when watching it.

That episode was phenomenal. It had everything. It felt like a finale. The fact we still have one more episode is awesome. Alpha and Beta have shown how evil and capable they are. This season has been incredible and it all deserves 10 stars. The pike scene was emotional. Can't wait for next week now. 10000000/10

The Definition of Bittersweet
jrc-0539125 March 2019
This was quite possibly the best episode of the entire season, or even the series. A fantastic piece of entertainment that had my undivided attention for the entire episode. The first half of this episode was brilliantly written, as we see a short scene with each of the characters who end up meeting their fate at the end of the episode. The last 20 min was absolutely astonishing, emotional, scary, anxious, gripping, incredible entertainment that no show besides TWD is able to deliver. Where the hell do we go from here for the finale?

Without spoiling this episode, this episode is going to stick with me for a long time(Kind of like the Glenn and Abraham killing did). It had a foreboding tone to it and you could tell something bad was going to happen. Great writing, outstanding performances especially by Samantha Morton.

Did they just Game of Thrones us?
Dannyboi9425 March 2019
I have read the comics in which this TV show has been adapted from, and I can't have been the only one who was expecting to see 'that' character up there, but instead, the Walking Dead finally grew some and gave us a very gutsy and intense episode that is one of the best in the entire series.

The Calm Before pulled a stunt I would only have expected from a Game of Thrones episode and it would glorious. This series has seriously been going down hill the past few seasons, and with the exit of Rick and Maggie, I expected the show to fail miserably. But ever since the introduction of the Whisperers, the show has managed to find its footing, something they haven't done since season 5. The Alpha is up there with the Governor and Negan as the best villains in the show, she is truly wonderful and intimidating to watch.

This was a fantastic episode, and I hope the show manages to keep this up, because it is needed as a few years of boring. Maybe it's the show's new leadership? Whatever it is, it's working.

So someone was complaining that people are giving this episode a 10/10 rating before it even airs. You're wondering why they are doing this? Because people like you are giving it a 1.

Edit: I just watched the episode and it's so phenomenal and devastating!!! Definitely the best episode episode of season 9 and arguably one of the best episodes of the whole show. 10/10

The Calm Before, a mind blowing graphic novel accurate episode
Holt34425 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is so true to the same event that happened in the graphic novel, I honestly felt they did it better on the snow which is a big thanks to more fledged out scenes, making us truly go deep into the story and the horrific events that unfolds. Laura Belsey directs the episode with such care and specifics, getting it right with the graphic novel, you can almost see the pages on the screen, great work. The editing and cinematography was some of the best since episode 5 and 8. This was one of the best episodes of the whole show and certainly one of the season's best. Giving us suspension, unpredictable outcomes and superb drama. This event will hopefully be remembered as an iconic episode of TV history as it succeeds in drama.

Seeing the whole ensemble cast being together was something I've missed, the show just gets so much better when everyone is apart it but the cast is too big to fit everyone in every single episode. Everyone kicked ass in this episode, the zombie killing editing was a throwback to season 6, just fine zombie killing. Seeing Connie and Kelly having that heart to heart conversation was great, getting to know those two characters even more. The whole fair was excellent, seeing various of characters interact like everything is alright is probably something we won't see for a long time. To the emotional ending, they did an great job of recreating the horrible event with the heads on the pole, having killed off various of characters but the unexpected ones was Enid and Tara. That's just heavy, two great characters dead in one meaningful way. Michoone's throwback speech to the prison Era made sense, Tara have always been an dislikeable character but the character development she has had on the show is just perfect. The two will be missed.

Mediocre story telling
abachospacko26 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand the overwhelming 10/10 reviews. This episode is another example of what the show does best, killing off unimportant characters while not making a lot of sense. The episode literally starts with introducing a new couple who moved into Hilltop, only to kill them off 2 minutes later! That's just lazy writing! Then there's the bandits, who we only met 2 episodes earlier. And their motivation for protecting the kingdom and losing their lives over it is exactly what? How can they be so altruistic for communities they got nothing from, not even paid....? Then this episode takes a lot of lazy shortcuts (how the hell did Henry, Tara, Enid, D.J., Frankie and Siddiq end up captured??). Henry must have been dragged out of Kingdom, after all he was recovering from injury... Seems the writers/ directors were in a hurry to get to the pike scene and left out important plot twists. But even the pike scene was underwhelming in terms of who got killed! Bandits: Nobody cares! Same for D.J. and Frankie: I didn not even recognize them without reading up, that's how much of side characters they were. The lovely old lady, yes this was a shock! Henry: I'm sure 80% of the viewers were as annoyed of him as I was. The only "meaningful" deaths seem to be Tara (because she is head of Hilltop) and Enid (doctor and a character to empathize with). Overall this episode shows how easy a "shocker" scene gets overwhelmingly positive reactions. It proves that there doesn't need to be any good writing, just shocking deaths. But in reality the creators just played it safe by not killing any fan favorites and skipping the difficult part of explaining how the hell this all was supposed to happen.

Just one question..
xxxNomadicxxx25 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Why would Alpha leave Sidiq alive when she was going to send Daryl and crew back to see the heads of their friends? That doesn't make any sense, his head should've been mounted too. Why leave him alive when Daryl and crew can carry the same message?

Oh that's right, he had to be able to tell them how they bravely fought together and died fighting as a team. It a was team building experience that the communities need to prepare them for the upcoming war.

That was so lame!

Thanks for taking care of our Henry issue. Couldn't have happen to a bether character.
