A solid start

I really enjoyed the pilot for Stargirl and am looking forward to the rest of the series. Both Brec Bessinger and Luke Wilson are great in the show, with Joel McHale's small role as Starman an early highlight.

Pretty enjoyable start

Warning: Spoilers
The choreography with the staff was alittle ridiculous, not gonna lie, but whatever.

As for the story itsself, it was pretty solid. Interesting characters and good ol' highschool setting. (Hopefully there's alittle extra to that part, cause it seemed pretty generic so far.)

I'm excited to see where this goes!

So Good

Excellent beginning to the series. Extremely likeable cast and great special effects. Near the middle the episode did slow down a bit and give some cringeworthy high school movie tropes that don't accurately represent high school, but other than that it was nonstop fun and I can't wait until next week to see more!

Unexpectedly good start, Geoff Johns' writing and love for his creation shows how great it is
Holt34419 May 2020
This is the pilot episode for Stargirl and its starts amazing with quality writing by the creator Geoff Johns. He helped create the character for DC comics with Lee Moder and now he serves as showrunner, producer and writer for this show that is streamed first on DC Universe and then on The CW. That's why the budget are so much higher and it shows. To be honest, by watching the trailers I didn't really think this TV show was going to be anything for me but I had hope that Geoff would make it good and I was rewarded in tuning in with a fantastic pilot episode that was directed by Glen Winter.

So what is Stargirl about? It's about Courtney Whitmore, who becomes the superhero Stargirl. This is her third live action appearance and probably the best. Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow was the first. By the premise and trailers, we know she'll be joining the Justice Society of America and that makes me hyped. The characters we get introduced to, heroes and villains are all interesting and likeable.

The lighthearted side of the show works perfectly, for example the humor doesn't feel forced but natural. They nailed the humor and jokes. Costume and prop department did some fine work. I didn't expect the special and visual effects would be good but they were great. I really liked how they handled the staff, some stunts felt a bit weird but I think it will be improved later on. The music fits perfectly with the show! It's an overall amazing pilot that made me wanting more. So far Pat is my favorite character, just so relatable and likeable. I recommend Stargirl. If you dislike high-school settings I have this to say, it isn't a focus. Courtney Whitmore is a good and believable character that is actually well performed by Brec Bassinger

Good start
The show both looks, sounds and feels good. Just please stop doing slow-motion scenes. They don't look good. They are the only thing reminding me that this is a tv show and not a big budget movie. If this is how fast it was filmed, speed those sequences up. Just please keep it non slow motion.

Very promising show

Warning: Spoilers
Based on this pilot episode, STARGIRL might already be a keeper! I can't exactly explain why, but from the promos, I was low-key interested in this series and I vowed not to invest in another CW series again after Flash and Riverdale went to hell. Then again, those 2 series had great Seasons 1 and 2 only to go to crap for various reasons. So that means Stargirl is good for 2 years at least.

Even though Luke Wilson is well known, I've only seen him in 2 things: That 70s Show and Vacancy and I liked him in both. It's probably better this way because if I'd have seen him in more stuff, the overexposure would have probably been a negative for me, so in a way, it's like I'm watching a new actor and from the Pilot, Wilson really looks like he's going to be the glue that keeps this show together.

Wilson plays Pat Dugan, the dependable sidekick to Starman (Joel McHale in a funny cameo performance), who dies in the opening flashback sequence. Flash-forward 10 years to the present and we meet Pat's family: his wife Barbara Whitmore (well played by Amy Smart), his son Mike Dugan (scene-stealing child actor Trae Romano) and last but certainly not least his stepdaughter Courtney Whitmore (winning and engaging performance by Brec Bassinger), who plays the title character.

The fractured family moves from LA to Blue Valley, Nebraska, where Courtney runs into problems while the rest of the family acclimates almost immediately. The show sets up Courtney's potential group of sidekicks, friends, enemies, and frenemies at her school, where she meets a trio of "losers" and ends up getting into an altercation with the school bully. Later that night at home, she stumbles upon her father's staff in the family basement and Stargirl is more or less born.

The series premiere throws in a ton of exposition and characters, yet still manages to be very entertaining. The dialogue was simple, crisp and funny. The characterizations well laid out. Also, the CGI is very impressive, unlike another CW superhero series that I've already mentioned. Bassinger and Wilson have a natural rapport and play extremely well off each other. They were pretty much the only ones given anything to work with in the Pilot and both brought their A games. Thankfully, they'll be leading the show moving forward. I'm already dreading this show's eventual fusion with the rest of the Arrowverse in later seasons, but at this point, I'm all in on being a regular viewer of Stargirl!

Great beginning!

This was a fun and great episode to start of Stargirl with. I am really looking forward to the next episode, something Batwoman completely failed to do. If this show gets connected to the "Arrowverse". I believe we have a great show on our hands.

As a big fan of DC. I liked the episode. Could've been better but its not bad. What surprised me the most was the comedy in the show. You can actually laugh while seeing something made up by DC!

Where Have I Seen This Before?
joshuahines16 May 2022
A fast jaunt through teen formula fiction. Picture this- a girl, new to town, after a move she didn't want. She is instantly hated by the popular people and is forced to be friends with a group of oddballs (going to make a guess and say that they have the sorts of skills that will make convenient plot devices later). She discovers her family is connected to a secret past. Where haveI seen this before? Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and how many other movies and shows. I absolutely love seeing the Justice Society brought to life. But, this is a show that takes no chances. Good enough to see if it gets better, but it will have to go beyond the painfully predictable to stay too long.

Great Start

I haven't read much of jsa or watched anything with them but this was a fantastic start for a superhero show! The opening scene was one of the best openings I've seen in a while! For me it kind of had a smallville vibe and I love it! It leads into the next episode greatly!

Pilot

Stargirl opens with a big fight scene with the Justice Society of America getting a whupping.

The only survivor is Stripesy/Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) who 10 years later is now Courtney Whitmore's stepfather.

The family are moving to Nebraska from LA and Courtney is the new girl in school which has its share of bullies. Courtney does not like the town of Blue Valley.

She also learns that her father may have been Starman and together with Stripesy, they were part of the Golden Age of Heroes.

Courtney also finds a Cosmic Staff that belonged to Starman and the staff wants to have some kind of sentient connection with her. Courtney has fun using her gym skills with the staff.

The episode has a fantastic opening sequence with the demise of Justice Society of America. I think we will still see more of Starman (Joel McHale.)

The staff bit reminded me of the Harry Potter movies and Stargirl had a 1980s vibe to it. This was reflected in the music such as Bruce Springsteen and the movie in the drive in being The Goonies. Maybe there is a touch of John Hughes in here.

Although a superhero show, this is also something akin to Smallville with a focus on teenagers. Also one of the bully's father is a supervillain.

A colourful opener, Courtney is lot less moody for a teenager, although she is not pleased to have left LA. This hints at a burgeoning relationship with Stripesy who is going to be her mentor.

Great start...

...but we'll see if this show can keep its bearings. So many DC shows lose their charm after the first couple of seasons.

I really enjoyed this episode, though. She's an incredibly likeable protagonist and there's an earnestness to the story that makes it one of the most charming starts to a tv show that I've seen.

Best CW Show In A While
randyaiken27 May 2020
The CW shows have been going really downhill lately and this show is bringing it back. I'm excited to see what's next! One of the beat pilots i've ever seen.

The show is fantastic.
wcparry223 September 2021
Partly because of highlighting Type 1 Diabetes by miss Bassinger in general (not in the show) , is amazing. We get lumped into 'diabetics', typically referring to type to by politicians and the media. Representation in a healthy way is a very good thing for those with autoimmune disorders. I have mad respect for her, and she should be supported in everything. Type- 1 for 43 years, and an actress working this hard is actually inspirational with a condition we feel 'lonely' in. Kudos, and keep up the good work! Thank you for being a decent human.

The little things
shefchenko24 October 2021
The one thing I can't stand is the obvious lame scenes. And here there were the opposite of those. Around 27:30 our stargirl needs to find a light in the basement, and she actually looks around, not like in other movies when actors don't even try to pretend, they just know where the switch is. I really appreciate little things like this one. They show the attention to details that went into the series(or at least in the 1st one).

Bad episode
amineenaa20 May 2020
I watched the first episode and drew some points, starting with acting. It was a humble thing by a heroine who feels as if she is improvising. She does not live with a role, as if she watched other series of superheroes and started to imitate them. You feel as if you are witnessing previous works of old superheroes, but in terms of a story, they were very hasty, as we notice that a heroine quickly reached a weapon and confronted with an evil one. I knew the truth in a stupid thing, nothing special. With old episodes
