Television has long ridden the coattails of cinema when coming up with new programming, serializing popular genres like Westerns and Crime Thrillers since its very inception. However, the obvious budgetary limitations of TV production mean that certain kinds of stories are less suited for the small screen. Thankfully, we’re lucky enough to live in a time when technology and the streaming wars have finally caught up to film when it comes to producing the type of long-form content we’ve always yearned for.
Case in point, Legendary and Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters achieved the unthinkable by bringing blockbuster-worthy Kaijus to the small screen at a scale we’ve never seen before. And though the show has already aired its finale, I know that Kaiju fans are likely still clamoring for more TV-based monsters, so we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six TV shows to watch after Monarch.

Guess who's drunk — er, starring in his own animated show? More than a decade after hitting theaters in 2010, Edgar Wright's commercial failure turned cult classic "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is getting an official continuation in the form of an anime series. The original movie, which adapts Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comic books, centers on the eponymous Mr. Pilgrim (Michael Cera), a 22-year-old under-achieving Toronto musician who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). The only catch? To date Ramona, Scott must first battle her seven "evil" exes, who range from egotistical film stars to bassists with vegan superpowers.
One could call "Scott Pilgrim" the "Short Term 12" of comic book films in that it features many actors who've gone on to become far bigger names since its release ... including, amusingly enough, the star of "Short Term 12" itself, Brie Larson. It's also...

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Guillermo del Toro’s kaiju movie Pacific Rim, and in a new tweet over the weekend the Oscar-winner has teased a theatrical re-release.
Del Toro tweets just a few months shy of the film’s 10th birthday, “As promised, we are in talks with @Legendary to re-release Pacific Rim in 3-D IMAX for one weekend in Los Angeles in its anniversary!! Stay Tuned- its a great experience!!”
Pacific Rim was originally released in theaters here in the United States on July 12, 2013 in 3D and IMAX 3D, stomping its way to $411 million at the worldwide box office.
In the film, “As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.”

“Do all of you remember the name Red Ribbon Army?” That’s the first of many lines of expository dialogue in “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” the latest animated action-fantasy adaptation-extension of the mega-popular “Dragon Ball” manga comics.
That opening line of voiceover narration also inadvertently prepares viewers for how convoluted the movie soon becomes.
Some tablesetting dialogue explains who the Red Ribbon Army are (bad guys) and why they’re back. The son of the Red Pharmaceutical Company’s founder, Magenta (voiced by Volcano Ota in the Japanese-language version and Charles Martinet in the English dub), wants to take over the world. But soon enough, this fairly straightforward beat-em-up spectacular, which pits heroic aliens against villainous robots, becomes a celebration of “Dragon Ball,” a decades-old anime institution.

The uneven Japanese animated fantasy “The Deer King” often resembles the sort of Studio Ghibli action-adventure that made animation figurehead Hayao Miyazaki internationally famous, especially “Princess Mononoke” and “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.” “The Deer King” not only looks like those Studio Ghibli staples, but also follows a plot that recalls Ghibli-style high fantasies: two warring feudal kingdoms try either to capture or enlist Van, a resourceful ex-soldier who may or may not be immune to a devastating plague.
Comparisons between “The Deer King” and Studio Ghibli’s better known movies seem inevitable, especially given how many of this movie’s creators learned their trade as animators and animation directors at Studio Ghibli, particularly co-directors Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji, and key animators Kenichi Konishi and Kenichi Yoshida. Thankfully, what works in so many Ghibli movies also mostly works in “The Deer King,” given the craft and consideration...

Netflix’s “Pacific Rim: The Black” is a great example of how Western companies can use anime to help expand the reach of their biggest franchises. Over the last 30 days, some of Netflix’s most in-demand original anime series are continuations and spinoffs of incredibly in-demand live-action originals. “Pacific Rim: The Black,” a spinoff of the sci-fi movie franchise, was the second most in-demand original Netflix anime series on the platform, second only to the megahit “Arcane,” according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other consumer engagement. “Arcane” itself is an extension of Riot Games’ popular “League of Legends” game. Also on the list is “Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy,” an extension of Hasbro’s popular toy series which inspired Paramount’s six-feature (so-far) live-action film franchise. Most in-demand anime series on Netflix, April 2-May 31, 2022, U.S. (Parrot Analytics) Every studio,...

The Season Two conclusion of the animated TV series “Pacific Rim: The Black” streams April 19, 2022 on Netflix:
“…the series is set in the same universe as the original two ‘Pacific Rim’ films, as a race of monsters known as ‘Kaiju’ take over the continent of Australia, with the two siblings ‘Taylor’ and ‘Hayley Travis’ among a pocket of survivors on the continent.
“They still hope to reach the safety of Sydney aboard ‘Atlas Destroyer’, the scaled-down training ‘Jaeger’ left behind when Australia was evacuated.
“With teenager ‘Mei’ and the mysterious human/kaiju hybrid ‘bOy’ joining Taylor and Hayley, this makeshift family must cross a dangerous territory controlled by the cult ‘Sisters of the Kaiju’.

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Gideon Adlon takes our call.
NBC's "The Thing About Pam" explores the real-life 2011 murder of Betsy Faria. Based on the "Dateline" podcast of the same name, the series stars Renée Zellweger as convicted murderer Pam Hupp; Glenn Fleshler as Betsy's husband, Russ Faria; Josh Duhamel as criminal defense lawyer Joel Schwartz; Judy Greer as Lincoln County prosecutor Leah Askey; and Gideon Adlon as Betsy and Russ's 17-year-old daughter, Mariah Day.
You may recognize Adlon from 2020's "The Craft," in which she starred as Frankie. Adlon's previous projects also include Netflix's "Pacific Rim: The Black," Netflix's "The Society, and 2018's "Blockers." But her latest project is quite the departure from her previous roles,...

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.
April will also see the long-awaited sophomore installment to “Russian Doll,” the mind-bending “Groundhog Day”-esque dramedy series starring Natasha Lyonne as a hard-partying New York City woman stuck in a brain-melting circuitous loop from hell.
For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.

"Pacific Rim" remains one of Guillermo del Toro's best films, a love letter to anime and tokusatsu that recognizes the sheer joy in seeing giant robots punch giant monsters in the face. With references to everything from "Ultraman" and "Patlabor" to "Evangelion" and "Kamen Rider," the film is as exhilarating now as it was when it came out almost a decade ago. "Pacific Rim" is set in a world where giant monsters called Kaiju terrorize the planet. When missiles and nukes don't work, the only thing that can stop the Kaijus are giant robots known as Jaegers. But the Jaegers haven't helped much, and Kaiju...

The potential series follows Regina Haywood (played by Dickinson‘s Warren), “the newly promoted police captain of East New York, an impoverished, working class neighborhood at the eastern edge of Brooklyn,” per the official synopsis. “She leads a diverse group of officers and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to deploy her creative methods of serving and protecting during the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification.

Exclusive: Calum Worthy has been cast as a lead opposite Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville in Reboot, Hulu’s comedy pilot from Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan.

The “Castlevania” series at Netflix will end with its upcoming Season 4, Variety has confirmed.
Season 4 of the anime series will debut on May 13 and will consist of 10 episodes. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Netflix is looking at possibly developing a new show set in the “Castlevania” universe that would feature a new set of characters.
Inspired by the classic Konami video game series of the same name, “Castlevania” is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself.
The voice cast includes Richard Armitage, James Callis, Alejandra Reynoso, Theo James, Adetokumboh M’Cormack, and Jaime Murray. Warren Ellis created the series and serves as executive producer along with Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar. Sam Deats serves as director.

There are plenty of movie universes or shared universes out there at the minute. From Marvel’s juggernaut franchise to Sony’s unusual Spider-Verse hopes, to DC’s ever unfurling extended universe. But one of my personal favourites is by far Legendary’s MonsterVerse, starting in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, onto Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island and then to Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, every entry has been its own wonderful take on the kaiju film and gone from a mankind’s view of Titan destruction, to a monster melee action film, to a biblical epic in ancient monster war, but in Adam Winged’s Godzilla vs. Kong we may just have a film closer to Toho studios’ mad and meaningful spirit than any Western monster movie has ever achieved before.
This film sees Godzilla and Kong brought together in battle, when Godzilla unexpectedly starts turning violent and nobody knows why.

Exclusive: Liane Moriarty, the author behind HBO’s Big Little Lies and Hulu’s upcoming Nine Perfect Strangers, is set to have another of her books make it to the small screen.
Heyday Television, a joint venture between Harry Potter and Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood producer David Heyman and NBCUniversal International Studios, has secured the rights to upcoming book Apples Never Fall in a highly competitive situation.
Deadline understands that Heyman won out over a number of other interested parties, unsurprising given the television business’ interest in adapting Moriarty’s stories.
The novel, which will be published worldwide on September 14 by Henry Holt in the U.S. and Penguin Michael Joseph in the UK, centers on the Delaneys, who from the outside appear to be an enviably contented family. Former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are parents to four adult children. But unfortunately, Joy disappears, and her children...

Earlier in March a new part of Del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” franchise landed on Netflix.
“Pacific Rim: The Black” is the story of siblings Taylor and Haley, son and daughter of the dedicated Jaeger pilots Ford and Brina Travis. While their parents are nowhere to be found after their crucial decision to reach Syndney and bring help after the attack of a Kaiju, the kids among other peers remain waiting in a self-contained safe base somewhere in the Australian desert. In contrast with her level-headed brother who is also happens to be a Jaeger Pilot cadet that never finished training, Haley is a little daredevil who manages in one of her antics to find the famous hidden training Jaeger Atlas Destroyer. Everything’s fine someone would say, but Atlas Destroyer is non-weaponry machine, commanded by the A.I, Loa.

The single most memorable line of the Pacific Rim franchise came in the first movie when Idris Elba’s battle-armored mech marshal, Stacker Pentecost, proclaimed, “Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!” In the first season of Pacific Rim: The Black, which hit Netflix on March 4, Stacker’s name is now relegated to Easter-egg status among a new […]

Photo: ‘Pacific Rim: The Black'/Netflix It begins with a battle. A gigantic, scaly foot crashes into the wreckage of a city on fire, only for the creature to be impaled by a giant robot. Voiceover in the form of news reports informs us that ‘gateways from an unknown hellscape’ are opening across Australia, allowing passage to titanic monsters known as Kaiju who are causing death and devastation wherever they tread. Humanity’s only defense? Homemade robots known as Jaegers and the brave pilots controlling them. Anybody tuning into Netflix’s “Pacific Rim: The Black” will likely expect more of what Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham gave them in 2013’s “Pacific Rim”: Two-person crews piloting big-ass mechs slugging it out with equally big-ass monsters.

This review contains no spoilers and is based on the first three episodes of Pacific Rim: The Black season 1.
Guillermo del Toro’s neon-drenched monsters-vs-robots epic Pacific Rim wore its influences proudly on its elbow cannon-equipped sleeves, so an anime-style spin-off makes a certain kind of inevitable sense. Pacific Rim: The Black is a seven-episode Netflix Original that seeks to expand the Pacific Rim mythology – think “extended universe” rather than “sequel”.
Created by Thor: Ragnarok co-writer Craig Kyle and X-Men: Evolution head writer Greg Johnson, the show follows siblings Hayley (Gideon Adlon) and Taylor Travis (Calum Worthy) as they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic, kaiju-infested Australia.
A quick introductory voiceover establishes the setup: after multiple new Breaches appeared on the continent, the Pan Pacific Defence Corps cut its losses and moved out of Australia entirely. A half-hearted evacuation pulled out some survivors; the rest were abandoned. Hayley and Taylor’s parents were Jaeger pilots,...

Hello, everyone, and welcome to a brand new month of streaming! Hard to believe it’s already March, but that just means we have a new slate of VOD and Digital releases to look forward to, and the next few weeks are bringing us a lot of cool entertainment to enjoy at home. Shudder’s March release calendar is chock-full of great films that I heartily recommend genre fans check out, Netflix has a few new offerings that are well worth your time, and Arrow is kicking off March on the right foot with the digital debut of Jill Gevargizian’s The Stylist.
And as if all that wasn’t enough, HBO Max is giving us both Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Godzilla vs. Kong this month as well. We also have a ton of indie horror being released on a variety of platforms throughout March, including Come True,...

March brings breezes loud and shrill/stirs the dancing daffodil. Bit of poetry for you there. What Sara Coleridge fails to mention is that March also brings season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Netflix UK, more weekly episodes of Riverdale season five, a brand new sci-fi series from the creators of Misfits, a new film directed by Amy Poehler and a host of cool animated series.
The One (pictured above) is an eight-part British series created by Howard Overman about a near-future world in which a DNA test can track down your perfect partner. It’s adapted from John Marrs’ novel of the same name, and yes, has a strikingly similar premise to US anthology sci-fi Soulmates. Another fun new UK addition is The Irregulars, a period supernatural fantasy set in the Sherlock Holmes universe in which a bunch of ragtag kids not only have to save the world from darkness,...

The streaming wars are just as fiery and competitive as ever. Disney+ now has one Marvel TV show under its belt (WandaVision), with another one to come in March (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). In response, Netflix is broadening its reach with its list of new releases for March 2021.
Netflix always features plenty of international options for viewers across the globe, but March is the first month where it seems as though international releases make up roughly half of Netflix’s originals. And that’s great! China’s The Yin Yang Master and Spain’s Coven of Sisters both look to be intriguing films this month.
