Oy- I was so ridiculously excited to see a new season of Black Mirror pop up and the first episode of this season has stopped me from wanting to watch the rest.
It would be awful to learn that what killed the creativity and splendor of this show was simply Netflix taking it over. At first, they tried really hard to keep that formula that was working so well going, they balanced it almost to perfection, to the point where, had it not been for American actors, you couldn't tell where the break was. Then, they just gave up.
Season 5 didn't exactly end on the strongest note, but it was, at the very least, entertaining. A few episodes hit the nail on the head, others felt like they may belong to another series altogether. This first S6 episode fell completely flat, no blurred lines whatsoever.
That ominous moment of introspection did not hit at all. Like another reviewer said here, it felt like an episode written for Nickelodeon, maybe a step above Goosebumps, but certainly not for this show. The minute I saw the all-star cast, it was a complete pass. To me it just screams that they were hoping you'd be star-struck enough to let the horrible plot go- "if Salma Hayek and Micheal Cera signed up for it, it must be great".
Nothing made sense from a tech or logic perspective, and what I most admire about Black Mirror was how on the money they always were on those two points; White Bear shook me to my core because you could see how we, as a society, are already on that path. The Entire History of You was based on a premise we've heard giants in the tech industry speak about and seeing it come to fruition on the screen really set off those warning bells. Even Nosedive, a later episode where Netflix had already taken over, left the sour taste of the future of social media in your mouth. Each episode made you stop and think how threatening the "helpful & harmless" technology can get.
Where was that OMG moment in the S6E1 episode? After the "big reveal" I was still waiting for that shock to hit. So disappointed when you find out that's all there is. The twist ain't twisting.
I liked the idea of how dangerous blindly accepting all terms & conditions in our daily life can be, and they could've really done that up BIG TIME, but this fell hard and flat on its face.
I hope I build up the desire to watch the rest of the season but I really hope there's not another let down like this to follow. It would be awful to end such an amazing series on what seems to be a last attempt to make bank on the hopes of those, like me, that absolutely loved the concept of Black Mirror.
