Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful (2023)
Season 6, Episode 1
4/10
Such a Let Down
23 June 2023
Oy- I was so ridiculously excited to see a new season of Black Mirror pop up and the first episode of this season has stopped me from wanting to watch the rest.

It would be awful to learn that what killed the creativity and splendor of this show was simply Netflix taking it over. At first, they tried really hard to keep that formula that was working so well going, they balanced it almost to perfection, to the point where, had it not been for American actors, you couldn't tell where the break was. Then, they just gave up.

Season 5 didn't exactly end on the strongest note, but it was, at the very least, entertaining. A few episodes hit the nail on the head, others felt like they may belong to another series altogether. This first S6 episode fell completely flat, no blurred lines whatsoever.

That ominous moment of introspection did not hit at all. Like another reviewer said here, it felt like an episode written for Nickelodeon, maybe a step above Goosebumps, but certainly not for this show. The minute I saw the all-star cast, it was a complete pass. To me it just screams that they were hoping you'd be star-struck enough to let the horrible plot go- "if Salma Hayek and Micheal Cera signed up for it, it must be great".

Nothing made sense from a tech or logic perspective, and what I most admire about Black Mirror was how on the money they always were on those two points; White Bear shook me to my core because you could see how we, as a society, are already on that path. The Entire History of You was based on a premise we've heard giants in the tech industry speak about and seeing it come to fruition on the screen really set off those warning bells. Even Nosedive, a later episode where Netflix had already taken over, left the sour taste of the future of social media in your mouth. Each episode made you stop and think how threatening the "helpful & harmless" technology can get.

Where was that OMG moment in the S6E1 episode? After the "big reveal" I was still waiting for that shock to hit. So disappointed when you find out that's all there is. The twist ain't twisting.

I liked the idea of how dangerous blindly accepting all terms & conditions in our daily life can be, and they could've really done that up BIG TIME, but this fell hard and flat on its face.

I hope I build up the desire to watch the rest of the season but I really hope there's not another let down like this to follow. It would be awful to end such an amazing series on what seems to be a last attempt to make bank on the hopes of those, like me, that absolutely loved the concept of Black Mirror.

This in no way deserves these low ratings
18 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've never been an a fan of anything Royal related. I think they entire institution is absurd just like practically all ruling governments and the likes. I'd heard about this docuseries on the news all week and it definitely got me interested.

First and foremost- this does not deserve these insanely low ratings , nor does it warrant the horrible things people are saying in the reviews. It leads me to believe that those that are so incensed and outraged by their story are either members of the media who loved tearing them down and are now angry at how they're portrayed, or the ignorant people who believe that Meghan's existence in the royal family is unacceptable and an affront to their dated, discriminatory, racist ideology.

The way these comments are painting the picture of Meghan is infuriating. She was a philanthropist and very giving, charitable long before meeting Harry. It's information you can verify with a quick google search. People saying that she was only this humble and involved because of Harry is incorrect and just plain stupid. Although I've never followed the Royal family, I had read about the work she does for organizations long before Harry came in the picture. Mostly because I loved the show Suites when it aired, I read up on the cast. I think she is an incredible, kind, hardworking and giving person- and the same goes for Harry.

Is this the greatest docu-series made? Will it change your world, make you look at life differently? No. But it is honest, it is incredibly informative if you are not British, it's entertaining, and it's heartwarming. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and will follow through to the end. I'm so glad I watched. I'm happy Meghan and Harry had the opportunity to tell their story, and I'm glad Harry had the foresight to do the right thing for his family and not let himself be swayed by what's expected.

Consider this Before You Judge so Harshly...
9 February 2022
I think the low ratings for this show as a whole are completely uncalled for. You cannot expect this to be a carbon copy of the original with a different cast. If HIMYM resonated with you because it was more relatable to your generation, it's only right that HIMYF caters more to this generation. For the love of everything holy, the original show aired in 2005- almost 20 years ago!

You also can't expect any show to give you Emmy-worthy perfection in a handful of episodes. You have to let the show find it's footing. Even my all-time favorite shows, the ones I believe are perfection, all started on shaky ground for me. I only appreciate the goofiness of the first season after the second or third season.

I too am watching this show because I enjoyed HIMYM, and I am thoroughly enjoying how well it relates to this generation. I don't want to watch a new Ted, Lily, Marshal, Robin, or Barney- they are iconic in their own right and don't deserve a new cast trying to emulate their individual character's magic.

I want a completely different set of characters and situations with a hint of modernized nostalgia here & there, and that's exactly what this show offers (the old apartment, storytelling technique, the search for "the one", friends that are like family, the bar).

If I wanted to see HIMYM again, I'd just rewatch it. If your complaint is that you can't stand this generation and the show is nothing like the original, stop watching, this isn't for you. This show will not give you what you're searching for.

For everyone complaining about the laugh track- go rewatch a few episodes of HIMYM. The laugh-track on there is just as cringy. All laugh tracks are cringy. It's practically their purpose. I wish all laugh tracks were a thing of the past, but alas.

The purpose of this spinoff is to give Millennials the relatable joy that HIMYM gave Gen X and Xennials. Just keep an open mind and let the show develop before you write it off.

As a Xennial myself (gen x-ers on the gen x/millennial cusp), it took me at least two seasons to really start enjoying HIMYM.

I'm loving the fact that I can relate to both HIMYM & HIMYF and I'm excited to see where this show goes.

How I Met Your Father: The Good Mom (2022)

Enjoying the Show, But this Episode Was Not a Favorite
9 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm really enjoying this show, but this episode fell a little flat for me.

I understand the want to introduce Sophie's mom since the mother's past unstable behavior has greatly influenced Sophie's journey for love, but I think it was just too soon considering that the mom's backstory is a pretty messed up one and it's obvious by the end of the episode that she has learned nothing over the years.

Dating the 27 year-old musician was enough of a twist without having to add her cheating with the much more age-appropriate manager. If anything, I feel like they should've gone the route of Sophie jumping to the conclusion that her mom was dating the 27 year-old, and having her grill him hard as the misunderstanding unravels.

It should have resolved in the end with Sophie feeling like the manager was the first appropriate man her mom has dated and how happy she was that he seems to compliment the mom's wanderlust spirit. In that way, we could see Sophie letting go of the notion that she is more the mother figure in their relationship, and she now feels more at peace to follow her own path when it comes to love.

Lastly- I think the low ratings for this show as a whole are completely uncalled for. You cannot expect this to be a carbon copy of the original with a different cast. If HIMYM resonated with you because it was more relatable to your generation, it's only right that HIMYF caters more to this generation. Warning: Spoilers
These two stars are ONLY because they brought back Ghost. It's the only part of the finale that deserves any recognition.

The rest of this mess is right up there with the Dexter series finale.

We have this amazing savior in Dany, a woman that, from they very beginning, was a beacon of hope to all the oppressed, and right when she's practically won this game of thrones, she snaps and kills everyone in her path. Fantastic.

We deserved better.

This was painful to watch. I don't even know what to say because words fail to capture how truly awful this show is. Not one skit was worthy of a even a chuckle. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of cringe comedy but this is in a class all it's own. I was floored to see a decent rating score. I really hope this isn't the new standard for skit shows.

What's With These Reviews?
21 April 2019
I don't get what the deal with all these negative reviews is. First of all, it's a Rom Com and for a Rom com, it delivers. It's the best new Rom Com I've seen in a while.

I watched this on Friday night with a few of my girlfriends and we all loved it! We laughed, danced (the soundtrack is amazing!), and we cried. I'm within the age range of the characters and I found it very relatable, which made it that much better.

This movie captured New York in all it's day-to-day glory, which is a bit rare. Movies are great at catching the fantasy of NYC but I find it's rare to see what living here is really like. I love how they capture the New Yorker without making New York it's own character (hopefully that makes sense?).

I do not agree with a few reviews that say that the representation of different races and ethnicities in the film are simply tokenism. No. I've waited too long to see more minority representation in this genre for someone to come and rain on that parade. This is what most friendships look like in this city- no question about it. It would've seemed weird if all the girls were one race or ethnicity in this very diverse city.

I loved Gina in this role. She knocked it out of the park. First time I ever saw her was on Jane the Virgin, then in Miss Bala, and I love how well lived-in her characters feel in each role. I can't wait to see more of her.

As for the love story, I loved it. I loved how messy it was. I love how it strayed away from a typical ending. It just worked so very well.

Do I wish it had been a bit longer? Yes, but not for a different ending, just for a bit more of all of it. I think the drug use was a bit excessive (especially the molly). I haven't seen this much weed in a movie since Friday or Pineapple Express (or maybe I'm not watching the right movies, lol). I don't mind seeing them smoke, it was just way too much. These are the only reasons why I knocked off a star.

Outdated Facts & Statistics
18 February 2019
This documentary is a joke. Where are these stats coming from, encyclopedia Britanica? These facts are either completely outdated or altered to fit their narrative. A complete mess.

Netflix should take some responsibility here and take down this mess that can only be described as the first paper a psych 101 student writes just because they figure it's better to hand SOMETHING in.

It's clear that Netflix will put their stamp of approval on just about anything.

Love How This Was Done
25 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit, I was a bit nervous when I heard that an important character would die that would affect everyone in the Dunphy/Pritchett clan for several episodes. I first thought it would be Frank (Phil's dad) or Javier (Manny's dad), but worried it would be someone bigger. I'm kind of bummed we won't see Shelly anymore- her episodes were always guaranteed winners- but I feel like it was a good choice and it was handled wonderfully. You'd think it'd be a bit more of a somber episode, but it was hilarious, absolutely loved it. The costumes alone were worth a watch!

Welp, it was good while it lasted
15 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The moment I saw Lucious in his prison recording studio, that's the moment I knew it was over. This show relies on its music performances entirely too much. The dialogue is cringeworthy, and their musical guests, like Becky G, are just not great choices for a drama like this. I felt like I was watching a mid-day soap opera, not the show that had me at the edge of my seat week-to-week last season. After this episode, there's no way I'm going to invest anymore time to this show. It was good while it lasted.

The Movie You Watch if You Just Want to Laugh
7 May 2018
This is the kind of movie you watch if you just want to laugh. It's the movie you see when you have a bunch of friends over on a Friday night and you want to unwind.

Will it win an Oscar? Not a chance, but it isn't horrible. The plot is pretty transparent and some of the acting is meh, but it's watchable.

This just isn't the kind of movie that a critic even has to review, in my opinion. It'll never win over a critic who takes themselves too seriously.

I agree with another reviewer that said this movie tries a little too hard to be funny, but you end up having a really great time watching it. It does have hilarious moments that make it worth watching.

This Episode Is So Very Important
15 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was so very important for so many reasons. The topic of immigration in this country, in a country of IMMIGRANTS may I add, is too often faceless. You hear arguments from all political parties, you read articles and watch news on the topic daily, DACA & Dreamers have become part of our everyday vocabulary, and all of this makes it faceless. What you saw in this episode was NOT liberal propaganda as another reviewer suggested, as the reviewer correctly pointed out that during the Obama presidency there were large numbers of deportations.

This episode illustrates an area where ethics and the law are unfortunately far from being synonymous. This is how you reach a large number of people- by including these scenarios in a show watched by millions.

What this episode successfully does is show us who the dreamers are and how their lives are being torn apart. The dreamers by definition are students who have spent the majority, if not all, of their lives in the US because they were brought here as infants or children. The dreamers are people who are seeking to better themselves through higher education, and in doing so, they become an asset to this country.

Tonight's episode illustrates how and why our immigration resources are working against us. The immigration agent is given the task to find Dr. Bello to most likely detain her and eventually deport her for a minor traffic infraction. She wasn't driving drunk. She didn't kill anyone or put them in harms way, she has not defrauded the government. She is not trafficking drugs or weapons. So this doctor, a woman who's skills and abilities add value to this country, will very likely pay the ultimate price, being sent to a country she knows nothing about, because of a red light.

Immigration resources should be focused on finding people who are here illegally and have committed federal crimes, crimes that put people in danger, crimes that hurt our communities and in turn our country. How can anyone, no matter your political affiliations, be ok with having immigration practically stalk those who are trying to do the very best for themselves and their families? It's easy as all heck to find a dreamer like Dr. Bello. Why? Because she's not running from anything. The ones that aren't as easy to find? The drug dealers, murderers, gang members etc. So why not use our resources to target them? Why are we targeting people who will become assets to our country? This is why this episode is important, this is why it's necessary for those with a platform to take on politics, this is how you get people to think about our laws and if they are truly working in the best interest of this country.

Well done Greys, well done!

What Can Even Be Said About This Episode?
26 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing. That sums up this entire episode- a whole lot of nothing happened. It was like watching previews of the next episode where there's a ton of action scenes that go no where. After last week's episode, I started to feel a bit optimistic; I should've known.

I really don't know how this show is going to recover from Carl's death. After taking out a major character, you have to come back extremely strong. You have to make a death like that worth it; you have to make it so essential to the story line, that there's no way to imagine the show without that event. TWD is failing miserably at this. To be fair, I don't think any show would be able to recover from such a major character loss.

And can we talk about the amount of commercials? My god! I DVR the show and it's still a pain to have to fast forward every three minutes. This is why I hate watching shows week-to-week on a network, as opposed to watching a full season on Netflix. The constant commercial breaks, especially when something rather exciting happens, doesn't let you really connect with the show. It's a completely different experience.

This episode proved to me that watching TWD will be a complete waste of time. I'm done with these filler episodes, I'm done with the 10-minute long commercial breaks. It really hurts to say this because I was such a fan of the show, and I'm a huge fan of the comic. You can dig a grave for this viewer.

The Walking Dead: How It's Gotta Be (2017)
Season 8, Episode 8

Rip Twd
11 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Gimple has single-handedly destroyed this fantastic series and I will forever mourn the loss of T W D. If Chandler (Carl) leaves the show, I don't think anyone will be able to save it. Of all the characters who could've been killed off, Gimple goes with the strongest and the future of T W D.

I think the fans would've resigned to losing Carl if it was Chandler Riggs' decision to leave, but in an interview, Riggs says he and his parents had been under the impression that he had at least another three years left on the show. He even said his parents bought a house in Georgia to be closer to the set. Then he was handed the script for the mid-season finale just a few days before filming began, and was shocked.

Either A M C. didn't want to pay Chandler more to renew a contract after he turned 18, or Gimple wanted to completely take the show from Kirkman by breaking away completely from the comic. Either way, Gimple is so much like Gregory in this situation- playing all sides to his advantage.

If it was a money thing, I feel like T W D could've fought harder for Chandler and won, or even decided to move on to another network (that would've definitely put a fire under A M C's behind).

As for the episode itself, it was handled horribly. The one and only moment I enjoyed the most was the one between Negan and Carl when Negan arrives at Alexandria and Carl is at the top of the gates. You can tell that Carl's comments completely break Negan down, and you get a subtle glimpse of his humanity, perhaps of the person he once was. These interactions are the ones that made me excited to see how Carl and Negan's relationship would develop.

The rest was just a bunch of nonsensical ridiculousness. So many plot holes, so many questions left unanswered, like how the hell did the saviors get out, regroup, and gear up as quickly as they did? For the love of God, Negan looks like he even had time for a haircut between escaping and his trip to Alexandria! The scene with Simon, Jesus, and Maggi left me perplexed. The whole Enid & Aaron situation just left you asking why? Such a disappointing mess.

Can we quit it with all the sex...ugh
14 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This show has so much potential; the cast is perfect, it's funny without being sitcom-funny, the writing is great as well. My problem is that every new series, especially Netflix series, focus too much on sex.

I'm not a prude by any means, but at this point the sex scenes are just stupid and boring. If it does not add anything to the story, can we just move on? My guess is that anyone watching this knows how sex works and we don't need two or three minutes of moaning & groaning, asses & breasts- we get it. There was only one scene in the season where you could say the sex made the scene funnier and therefore was necessary, and I'm OK with that.

All the graphic sex scenes also make it harder to watch at anytime. I can't be the only person who feels that it's harder to watch movies or TV with lots of nudity and sex. Can't want him in the day because the kids are around. Can't watch on the train or bus because someone is always over your shoulder.

I don't like being restricted because of pointless sex. I just end up losing interest in the show all together because I can only watch them at night when the kids are in bed and the house is quiet.

I really hope they make the next season about the content because the show does have great potential.

It's Clear, You Either Love it, or Hate It
6 January 2016
It's pretty clear that people will either completely hate, or fall helplessly in love with this musical episode- there is no middle ground. Fortunate for me, I'm one of the ones thats totally smitten with it. I think the episode was artfully done; the intense emotion and the music created this balance that made an even bigger impact. The song choice was perfect. Not to mention Sara's voice! Amazing!

I think the problem people have with this episode is that they're dismissing what happened in the intro- Callie made a point about what our brain chooses to hear and see, especially when you suffer a massive head trauma. This is the way Callie's brain is interpreting everything around her.

Bottom line is, I love, love, LOVED it.
