It has an 88% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes, which called it "a winner in its own right" despite not being as original as the first film.[4] Upon its release, it scored the second-largest three-day opening weekend in US history at the time of its release,[5] as well as the largest opening for an animated film until May 18, 2007, when it was eclipsed by its sequel Shrek the Third.[6] The film grossed over 919 million dollars worldwide. It went on to be the highest-grossing film of 2004 both in in North America and worldwide.[7] It is DreamWorks's most successful film to date, the highest-grossing film in the Shrek franchise, and was also the highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide until Toy Story 3 surpassed it in 2010;[8] it is now the tenth-highest-grossing animated film of all time. It is also the seventh-highest animated film of all time in ticket sellings.[9]It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the 77th Academy Awards, losing to The Incredibles and The Motorcycle Diaries. The associated soundtrack reached the Top 10 on the US Billboard 200.
