1. The Revenant (I) (2015)

R | 156 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

76 Metascore

A frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.

Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson

Votes: 874,805 | Gross: $183.64M

Released 28th of January in The Netherlands.

Review: The movie is about survival and Iñáritu nailed it. The realism and isolation the audience feels while following Hugh Glass is breathtaking. This is mainly because of the fantastic cinematography by Lubezki and the great performance by Leonardo DiCaprio. Another great thing is the soundtrack, which didn't get an academy award nomination to my surprise.

My only flaws with this movie is that it sometimes progresses way too slow and just keeps going. I also didn't appreciate many of the supporting characters, while I did like most performances, a lot of these characters felt bland and forgettable.

The Revenant will be remembered for years to come and should be watched by anyone interested in film.

2. Hell or High Water (II) (2016)

88 Metascore

Votes: 252,675 | Gross: $27.01M

3. La La Land (2016)

PG-13 | 128 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

94 Metascore

While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.

Director: Damien Chazelle | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Rosemarie DeWitt, J.K. Simmons

Votes: 672,128 | Gross: $151.10M

Feels like you're watching an old classic, but somehow also feels like you're watching something fresh and new.

There's such a lovely chemistry between the two leads. The leads are both following their dreams, which is a beautiful thing.

Another great film by Chazelle, one of the most talented upcoming filmmakers.

4. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

R | 139 min | Biography, Drama, History

71 Metascore

World War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.

Director: Mel Gibson | Stars: Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer

Votes: 594,745 | Gross: $67.21M

This film is really daring. It dares to show off the horror in war and that we should respect veterans for what they went through. This was mostly achieved by excellent direction by Mel Gibson, who has made a great return.

This film has some great acting and great character work. After this I respect Andrew Garfield more.

My only issue is that it starts off really slow: the youth parts could've been shorter, the training could've been shorter. It would've improved the pacing of this film.

Furthermore, it's a great war film and a very thrilling experience. One of the best of the year and definitely a contender for Best Picture.

5. Sully (2016)

PG-13 | 96 min | Biography, Drama

74 Metascore

When pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger lands his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew, some consider him a hero while others think he was reckless.

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Valerie Mahaffey

Votes: 298,297 | Gross: $125.07M

One of my favorite Eastwood's in years. Sully is tense, smart and intriguing.

Tom Hanks delivers a very solid performance and has fantastic chemistry with Aaron Eckhart.

This film has a very notable Eastwood directing style to it, which is very comparable to American Sniper.

6. Arrival (II) (2016)

PG-13 | 116 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

81 Metascore

A linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.

Director: Denis Villeneuve | Stars: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg

Votes: 771,982 | Gross: $100.55M

Fantastic score, great photography and just a great piece of filmmaking. It's also a well thought out story, which exactly knows how to be Science-Fiction. I really enjoyed this.

7. Manchester by the Sea (2016)

R | 137 min | Drama

96 Metascore

A depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.

Director: Kenneth Lonergan | Stars: Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, Lucas Hedges

Votes: 314,023 | Gross: $47.70M

Very solid drama with some damn good acting. Affleck truly deserved that Oscar.

8. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.

Director: Gareth Edwards | Stars: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen

Votes: 686,896 | Gross: $532.18M

Much better than expected.

Rogue One has a great balance between introducing new elements to the Star Wars universe, while still keeping the things that make Star Wars what it is. The action scenes have never been this good, the story, however, is not that good.

The first half of the film is dragging, but the second half turns into a fantastic war epic.

The new cast of characters are enjoyable and relatable in some way, but they needed better introduction.

Overall, a very solid film that exceeded my expectations.

9. The Nice Guys (2016)

R | 116 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

70 Metascore

In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer

Votes: 373,849 | Gross: $36.26M

The charisma between Crowe and Gosling is one of the greatest I have seen in the past few years. They're both really good in their roles and have no trouble acting in difficult scenes.

This film pays a great homage to the classic buddy-cop genre and is a solid standalone film. This movie proofs that originality hasn't died yet.

10. The Hateful Eight (2015)

R | 168 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

68 Metascore

In the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins

Votes: 660,310 | Gross: $54.12M

Released 7th of January in The Netherlands.

While this movie was weak on the characterization, the dialogue wasn't as impressive as you would've expected and the humor you see in most of Tarantino's filmography is lacking, The Hateful Eight is one of my favorite westerns in years. I am a big fan of 'one-location-movies' and this surely was an interesting take on that genre. The suspense and cinematography were very well done.

11. Café Society (2016)

PG-13 | 96 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

64 Metascore

In the 1930s, a Bronx native moves to Hollywood and falls in love with a young woman who is seeing a married man.

Director: Woody Allen | Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively

Votes: 81,332 | Gross: $11.10M

A stunning look at the upper class, as well as the lower class in the '30s. The film features many interesting themes which are put into this picture with some very smart directing decisions.

The final act is somewhat dragging, and I wasn't too satisfied with the cinematography at times.

Great acting, but especially great dialogue between characters. I'm also quite certain this film will get a Oscar nomination for best editing, I was quite impressed!

It was also nice to see Tony Sirico once again.

12. Snowden (2016)

R | 134 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

58 Metascore

The NSA's illegal surveillance techniques are leaked to the public by one of the agency's employees, Edward Snowden, in the form of thousands of classified documents distributed to the press.

Director: Oliver Stone | Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto

Votes: 163,027 | Gross: $21.59M

Read my full review on my IMDB page.

13. Jason Bourne (I) (2016)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Thriller

58 Metascore

The CIA's most dangerous former operative is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past.

Director: Paul Greengrass | Stars: Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel

Votes: 242,175 | Gross: $162.43M

While it doesn't live up to the original trilogy, Jason Bourne is still a fine piece of work. We get an expansion of the things we love about the Paul Greengrass films with more action.

It's not that good of a Bourne movie but it's a really good action movie.

14. Don't Breathe (2016)

R | 88 min | Crime, Horror, Thriller

71 Metascore

Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.

Director: Fede Alvarez | Stars: Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto

Votes: 300,763 | Gross: $89.22M

This thriller does a great job capturing the characters and their actions. The camera barely goes into a wide shot, it mainly stays in medium and close range to the characters.

It has also an interesting philosophy about determining who is the good and the bad guy.

Characters were a little bland and the ending just didn't work though. Overall it's a solid film.

15. Finding Dory (2016)

PG | 97 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

77 Metascore

Friendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.

Directors: Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane | Stars: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O'Neill, Kaitlin Olson

Votes: 303,695 | Gross: $486.30M

The title doesn't make a lot of sense, since Dory wasn't the one who should've been found, her parents were. Stunning animation with some heartwarming moments. Kind of forgettable though.

16. Hail, Caesar! (2016)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

72 Metascore

A Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line.

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes

Votes: 143,212 | Gross: $30.50M

A nice homage and a satire about the end of Golden Age Hollywood. If you're a movie geek like me, then you will appreciate this romanticized behind the scenes feature.

The pacing of this film is not good though. Some moments got me worried about who was editing this. It just doesn't succeed to get the pieces in the right place, which was a disappointment.

It's also not Deakins' best work and by far not Joel and Ethan's best work.

I liked the writing. It's original and it got some good dialogue, performed by some old and new talent.

17. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

PG-13 | 147 min | Action, Sci-Fi

75 Metascore

Political involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.

Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo | Stars: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan

Votes: 850,586 | Gross: $408.08M

Interesting politically, impressive action scenes & nice aesthetics, however the writing could've been better. This film is overstuffed and drags. Quite disappointing, but not a bad movie at all.

18. Julieta (2016)

R | 99 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

73 Metascore

After a casual encounter, a brokenhearted woman decides to confront her life and the most important events involving her estranged daughter.

Director: Pedro Almodóvar | Stars: Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte, Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta

Votes: 33,925 | Gross: $1.49M

Overly dramatic, but certainly interesting. Julieta is a good character study with nice cinematography. The rest of the movie doesn't offer anything else.

19. Split (IX) (2016)

PG-13 | 117 min | Horror, Thriller

63 Metascore

Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson, Jessica Sula

Votes: 554,651 | Gross: $138.29M

I can't blame Shyamalan for trying to be different. McAvoy was good in this film.

However, the rest of this film is predictable and what a god awful origin story to the lead girl.

20. The Shallows (2016)

PG-13 | 86 min | Action, Drama, Horror

59 Metascore

A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra | Stars: Blake Lively, Óscar Jaenada, Angelo Josue Lozano Corzo, Joseph Salas

Votes: 143,482 | Gross: $55.12M

Jump scares, somewhat boring and generic, nothing special. Just a very average flick which you'll forget in a week.

21. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

PG-13 | 132 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

66 Metascore

In 1926, magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in New York during his worldwide tour to research and rescue magical creatures as something mysterious leaves trails of destruction in the city, threatening to expose the wizarding world.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler

Votes: 507,975 | Gross: $234.04M

Very disappointing. Very bland humor, the setting falls flat, the character aren't interesting and it's very forgettable. I'm glad it ended.

22. The Girl on the Train (2016)

R | 112 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

48 Metascore

A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.

Director: Tate Taylor | Stars: Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux

Votes: 199,476 | Gross: $75.40M

Great acting (I can see Blunt getting an academy award nomination already) but that's really all this film has to offer.

This movie has terrible pacing, the mystery is not intriguing and it's just a big drag. Not recommended.

23. Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)

R | 98 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

38 Metascore

Bishop's most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life in order to make him complete three impossible assassinations and make them look like accidents.

Director: Dennis Gansel | Stars: Jason Statham, Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones, Michelle Yeoh

Votes: 93,386 | Gross: $21.22M

Total garbage, read my full review on my IMDB page.

24. Nerve (I) (2016)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

58 Metascore

A high school senior finds herself immersed in an online game of truth or dare, where her every move starts to become manipulated by an anonymous community of "watchers."

Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman | Stars: Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Emily Meade, Miles Heizer

Votes: 140,331 | Gross: $38.58M

For the first time in my life I left the theater. I only made it in 20 minutes and then I left. I'm not going to write what I didn't like about it, I'd much rather spend my time doing something else.

It felt like a terrible TV movie. That's all I want to say about it.
