1. Talk to Me (I) (2022)

R | 95 min | Horror, Thriller

76 Metascore

When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.

Directors: Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou | Stars: Ari McCarthy, Hamish Phillips, Kit Erhart-Bruce, Sarah Brokensha

Votes: 143,853

A classy slice of Aussie horror! Some very creepy (and gruesome) moments, and with a really strong third act. Quality horror.

In terms of tone it also makes for a great companion piece to this years 'Evil Dead Rise' and Sam Raimi's older 'Drag Me To Hell'.

2. Evil Dead Rise (2023)

R | 96 min | Horror

69 Metascore

A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Director: Lee Cronin | Stars: Mirabai Pease, Richard Crouchley, Anna-Maree Thomas, Lily Sullivan

Votes: 136,910

A fast-paced thrill ride that does justice to the legacy of the Evil Dead franchise!

While lacking the cartoonish insanity of Evil Dead 2 (my favourite in the series), this 5th cinematic entry genuinely feels like an Evil Dead film and doesn't hold back on the gore or profanity.

Minor gripes include the family / motherhood subplot; it feels like a lazy attempt at getting viewers emotionally invested in the lead character, it's not necessary and feels out of place in the context of the film as a whole. The characters often seem usually calm and unfazed by the horror unfolding around them, so that's a bit odd and breaks the immersion somewhat. The make-up on the lead deadite seemed a little inconsistent, also.

All in all, this is a worthy addition the the Evil Dead canon and I look forward to hopefully seeing a sequel (by the same team) in a couple of years!

3. The Beasts (2022)

137 min | Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

An expatriate French couple operate an organic farm in the Spanish countryside but clash with villagers.

Director: Rodrigo Sorogoyen | Stars: Marina Foïs, Denis Ménochet, Luis Zahera, Diego Anido

Votes: 18,336

5. Infinity Pool (2023)

R | 117 min | Crime, Horror, Mystery

72 Metascore

James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.

Director: Brandon Cronenberg | Stars: Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman, Dunja Sepcic

Votes: 56,680

Another winner from Brandon Cronenberg!

An engrossing and disturbing thriller with the usual body-horror and transhumanism, although the body-horror is not at the forefront this time.

Great film with a stellar cast, only let down by what felt like a slightly anti-climatic finale ...although I think that was the point.

6. Sick of Myself (2022)

97 min | Drama

71 Metascore

Increasingly overshadowed by her boyfriend's recent rise to fame as a contemporary artist creating sculptures from stolen furniture, Signe hatches a vicious plan to reclaim her rightfully deserved attention within the milieu of Oslo's cultural elite.

Director: Kristoffer Borgli | Stars: Kristine Kujath Thorp, Eirik Sæther, Fanny Vaager, Sarah Francesca Brænne

Votes: 15,563

Honestly not really a horror film, despite being listed as one.

This is a very strange film about a woman's desperation for attention at absolutely any cost. Very timely in our age of social media, with it's gluttony of narcissists!

Very good film; a unique mix of drama, subtle social commentary and very dark humour.

7. Renfield (2023)

R | 93 min | Action, Comedy, Fantasy

53 Metascore

Renfield, Dracula's henchman and inmate at the lunatic asylum for decades, longs for a life away from the Count, his various demands, and all of the bloodshed that comes with them.

Director: Chris McKay | Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz

Votes: 95,699

Funny, fast-paced and gory! Could have done with a bit more Nic Cage, but it's still a damn good time. Thumbs up!

8. Totally Killer (2023)

R | 106 min | Comedy, Horror

62 Metascore

When the infamous "Sweet Sixteen Killer" returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie accidentally travels back in time to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can start.

Director: Nahnatchka Khan | Stars: Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro

Votes: 50,913

Great fun!

A really strong horror-comedy, with the focus squarely on the comedy. Clever, witty, and very entertaining.

9. When Evil Lurks (2023)

Not Rated | 99 min | Horror

75 Metascore

In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to "give birth" to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body, only to end up unintentionally spreading chaos.

Director: Demián Rugna | Stars: Ezequiel Rodríguez, Demián Salomón, Silvina Sabater, Luis Ziembrowski

Votes: 31,434

Cool possession / zombie hybrid movie that's quite unique and pretty gruesome! The third act lacks a bit of pizzazz, but it's still a very good film.

10. Beau Is Afraid (2023)

R | 179 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror

63 Metascore

Following the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home.

Director: Eli Roth | Stars: Patrick Dempsey, Ty Olsson, Gina Gershon, Lynne Griffin

PG-13 | 102 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

72 Metascore

Director: Gerard Johnstone | Stars: Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Amie Donald

Votes: 142,626 | Gross: $93.88M

A fun (and obvious) Child's Play knock-off that really needed an R-rating, all the best bits are cut short so as to achieve a PG-13 rating! Boo!

Probably one for young adults who haven't seen the Chucky films. It's fine.

14. Influencer (II) (2022)

92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

66 Metascore

While struggling on a solo backpacking trip in Thailand, social media influencer Madison meets CW, who travels with ease and shows her a more uninhibited way of living, but CW's interest in her takes a darker turn.

Director: Kurtis David Harder | Stars: Emily Tennant, Rory J Saper, Cassandra Naud, Justin Sams

Votes: 14,186

Decent thriller with some unexpected turns! Clever and different. On the downside, the film loses steam about mid-way through and kinda meanders towards the finale.

15. The Wrath of Becky (2023)

R | 84 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

51 Metascore

Two years after escaping a violent attack, a teenage girl must defend herself against a domestic terrorist cell.

Directors: Matt Angel, Suzanne Coote | Stars: Lulu Wilson, Seann William Scott, Denise Burse, Jill Larson

Votes: 11,955

Solid follow-up to the previous 'Becky' film. Just about gory and funny enough to be worth a look. Entertaining.

16. No One Will Save You (2023)

PG-13 | 93 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

60 Metascore

An exiled anxiety-ridden homebody must battle an alien who's found its way into her home.

Director: Brian Duffield | Stars: Kaitlyn Dever, Elizabeth Kaluev, Zack Duhame, Lauren L. Murray

Votes: 65,350

Odd, quirky and inconsistently entertaining.

I dig the Amblin-esque tone at the start of the film, and the end scene is quality. But there's a cool Body Snatchers vibe that's dropped as quickly as it appears, which is a shame, and the third act kinda drags on without much happening.

Strong marks for originality. Decent film, but a missed opportunity.

17. Knock at the Cabin (2023)

R | 100 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

63 Metascore

While vacationing, a girl and her parents are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird

Votes: 115,510

Great premise and a good amount of tension, but let down by a disappointing third act / finale.

A perfectly watchable thriller, but nothing special.

64 Metascore

Director: Laura Moss | Stars: Marin Ireland, Judy Reyes, A.J. Lister, Breeda Wool

Votes: 5,845

Interesting premise, and the two leads are solid. It's more of an unnerving / uncomfortable drama than horror, so is sure to disappoint many people due to a complete lack of scares or gore.

I feel it would have benefitted from a more climatic ending, it definitely needed to lean into the horror angle more, at least for a big final scene or something. As it is, it just kind of ends randomly.

Solid film, but not as good as the Metacritic score may suggest.

23. Little Bone Lodge (2023)

R | 93 min | Crime, Horror, Thriller

Set during a vicious storm, two criminal brothers on the run seek refuge in a desolate farmhouse. Taking the resident family captive, they find the house holds dark secrets of its own.

Director: Matthias Hoene | Stars: Joely Richardson, Neil Linpow, Sadie Soverall, Harry Cadby

Votes: 9,665

Solid mystery thriller. Definitely worth a watch but it lacks that 'spark' to make it truly stand out.

Directors: David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Natasha Kermani, Mike P. Nelson, Gigi Saul Guerrero | Stars: Kelli Garner, Freddy Rodríguez, James Ransone, Jordan Belfi

Votes: 6,751

A marked improvement on V/H/S/84.

The 'Earthquake' segment drags the package down a bit; it's just a little dull, with a very cheesy "monster".

That aside, it's gory, sleazy, trashy fun! If you like Grindhouse-themed flicks, then you'll probably enjoy it.

27. Project Wolf Hunting (2022)

122 min | Action, Crime, Horror

53 Metascore

Director: Kevin Greutert | Stars: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand

Votes: 74,245

Just another Saw movie. Better than the last 3, but that's not really saying much!

Nice set up, a couple of good traps in the second act, but the third act is a stupid, convoluted mess.

32. Sick (2022)

R | 83 min | Horror, Thriller

62 Metascore

Due to the pandemic, Parker and her best friend decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone - or so they think.

Director: John Hyams | Stars: Gideon Adlon, Bethlehem Million, Dylan Sprayberry, Marc Menchaca

Votes: 20,098

Solid enough, but so generic it's like a waft of beige smoke; it's there momentarily, but it's pretty uninteresting, and then it evaporates.

Maybe it's more of a thing for young adults?

A cautious recommendation.

33. Swallowed (2022)

Director: André Øvredal | Stars: Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian

Votes: 49,275

A great premise, with a great cast and it's visually fantastic. Unfortunately it's not very engaging, there's a bunch of cheesy tropes and Dracula is a cartoony looking CGI joke. It would have worked far better as a claustrophobic horror/thriller hybrid, or maybe that's what it's trying to be, just unsuccessfully.

It's fine as unchallenging comfort food cinema, but it's definitely a wasted opportunity.

36. We Have a Ghost (2023)

PG-13 | 126 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

53 Metascore

Director: Christopher Landon | Stars: Jahi Di'Allo Winston, David Harbour, Anthony Mackie, Erica Ash

Votes: 32,912

Passible family comedy that didn't really click for me. It's got an 80's Amblin vibe going on, which is nice for the nostalgia value. It's fine, I guess.

37. Final Cut (2022)

112 min | Comedy, Horror

51 Metascore

Things go badly for a small film crew shooting a low budget zombie movie when they are attacked by real zombies.

Director: Samuel Bodin | Stars: Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, Cleopatra Coleman, Woody Norman

Votes: 31,952

Visually quite beautiful, and the premise has some potential early on, but it quickly falls apart and just gets worse as it goes on.

Very poor characterisation, choppy editing, and the usual terrible CGI ghost / monster that turns up at the end. A shame. You could do worse tho.

40. Pensive (2022)

Director: Rob Savage | Stars: Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian

Votes: 43,966

So middle-of-the-road and average that it's kind of impressive!

Perfectly fine if you want to switch your brain off and watch something that you've probably seen fifty times before, under a myriad of equally generic names.

43. The Pope's Exorcist (2023)

R | 103 min | Horror, Thriller

45 Metascore

Follow Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's leading exorcist, as he investigates the possession of a child and uncovers a conspiracy the Vatican has tried to keep secret.

Director: Julius Avery | Stars: Russell Crowe, Daniel Zovatto, Alexandra Essoe, Franco Nero

Votes: 83,276

Despite a genuinely funny performance from Russel Crowe, the film is unintentionally hilarious and not scary in the slightest. Playing every exorcism movie trope in existence and mixing it with loads of crap CGI is begging to be classed as a b-movie shlock-fest!

The film can be kinda fun, but it's definitely not good!

44. Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)

Pointless remake of 2014's 'Last Shift'. Not awful, but very hard to recommend.
