Exclusive: Doctor Who director Jamie Magnus Stone is helming a sci-fi series adaptation of Brian W. Aldiss’ debut Non-Stop for Aircraft Pictures.
Set in a distant future, Non-Stop tells the tale of Roy Complain, a man born into a primitive society only to discover his tribe is one of many aboard a colossal spaceship. This knowledge sets Complain and his band of intrepid explorers on a perilous journey through uncharted territories to find the ship’s bridge, as they unravel the mysteries of their new world and confront the looming threat of their own annihilation.
Casting is yet to be announced and Aircraft will begin shopping the project at Series Mania next week.
“We’re excited to bring this science-fiction classic to the screen as part of Aircraft’s continued expansion into scripted drama,” said Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen, co-founders of Aircraft. “We’re fortunate to be working with...

Ever since Paramount Global chair Shari Redstone won a hard-fought battle to re-merge CBS and Viacom in 2019, the combined company has been a chop-licking catalyst for entertainment media analysts and C-suite executives speculating on whether the company will be the the next meal for a consolidation-hungry industry. Yet despite the fervent conjecture, a realistic and viable suitor has yet to emerge.
Paramount Global has long been seen as an acquisition target due its relative size: Even merged, the company’s market cap is 12.6 billion (down from the 26 billion it was valued at at the time of the merger) and the enterprise value is 25.6 billion, far below its rivals such as Comcast, Disney and Netflix. The chatter reached a fever pitch when Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway acquired 2.6 billion worth of Paramount Global stock in May, which some interpreted as a sign that a juicy resale might come in the relatively near future.

Netflix’s plan to get into advertising was unorthodox. It was seeking unusually high CPMs (the cost to reach 1,000 consumers), and targeting and tracking were nearly nonexistent.
The year was 2005. And Netflix decided the time was right to get into the ad business via slips placed in its iconic red DVD envelopes.
“My entertainment clients loved it because of the halo effect of being associated with Netflix,” recalls Michael Miraflor, a former media buyer and now chief brand officer of venture capital firm Hannah Grey. “And it offered a creative canvas that was large enough to fit proper key art.”
Netflix eventually folded its DVD ad sales team as it went all in on streaming, but 17 years later, it is trying to enter the space once again — with unusually high CPMs and minimal targeting and tracking. It’s still banking on that halo effect.

David Zaslav has been unafraid to reshape Warner Bros. Discovery with an eye on the bottom line since the merger closed in April, but the chief executive’s latest move to rekindle the distribution agreement between HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video could put a ceiling on the company’s growth, experts told TheWrap. Warner Bros. Discovery and Amazon could reach a deal to reincorporate HBO Max into the latter’s Prime Video Channels offerings later this year, according to Bloomberg. Yet such a move would sacrifice long-term vision and competitive dynamics for a short-term gain. “Warner Bros. Discovery may be making one of the worst decisions to try and answer the market’s questions,” Andrew Rosen, former Viacom digital media executive and founder of streaming newsletter Parqor, told TheWrap. “We may have already seen the heyday of HBO Max as a result.” Representatives for Amazon declined to comment for this story.

Scrapbook-style book series “The Popularity Papers” is getting the TV treatment.
Amy Ignatow’s award-winning middle-grade novels will be adapted for the screen by Corus Media-backed Aircraft Pictures, the Oscar-nominated producers behind “The Breadwinner,” and Emmy-nominated production company WexWorks Media.
The original book series, for which the first installment was selected as a top-10 title of 2011 by the American Library Association’s Rainbow Project and won the 2010 Gold Award from the National Parenting Publications Association, tells the story of two best friends, Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang, who are on a mission to crack the popularity code and dismantle the social construct for middle-schoolers everywhere. Using the scientific method, the girls conduct social experiments on their peers with hilarious results.

Canadian media giant Corus Entertainment has made a rare production investment, buying a majority stake in “The Breadwinner” and “Raising Expectations” producer Aircraft Pictures.
Founded in 2005 by Canadian producers Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen, Aircraft was Oscar-nominated for 2017 animated feature “The Breadwinner,” about an 11-year-old girl living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2001. However, it seems to be the company’s live-action capabilities that have been the primary draw for Corus, which has a well-established kids’ content portfolio of its own.
Aircraft is known for both animated and live-action scripted TV shows and movies for kids, families and young adults. Its slate includes Hulu original “Holly Hobbie”; the “Bruno & Boots” movie adaptations; and the comedy “Raising Expectations,” starring Jason Priestley and Molly Ringwald. Leo describes the deal as “two puzzle pieces coming together perfectly” for both companies.
Colin Bohm, executive VP of content and corporate strategy at Corus Entertainment, tells...

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.” John Carpenter fans remember this “Rowdy” Roddy Piper line from 1988’s They Live, but imagine if Piper said something similar to Cthulhu upon entering the demon city of R’lyeh. If this sounds epic, then you may be interested in funding Portal to Hell, a short film co-starring Piper and Cthulhu that just launched an Indiegogo campaign.
Portal to Hell is guaranteed to be made next March and contributions to the Indiegogo campaign will help fund the special effects creation. The better the film looks, the better its chances are of being turned into a feature film, as Portal to Hell’s creative team is planning on using the short film to pitch a full film version beginning next fall. It's kind of insane that we're about to start talking about next year's South by Southwest and it's still October. Just last week I reposted a video from this year's SXSW! But here we go: today SXSW announced their first round of film programming, a preliminary list of panels you'll be able to check out next March in Austin, Texas. Highlights include a conversation with "Drive" and "Contagion" composer Cliff Martinez, a chat about arts criticism in the age of Twitter, and the return of the legendary "Jeffrey Tambor Acting Workshop." My favorite panel title on the list? "The Evolution of the Douchebag in Modern Cinema." It's sort of hard for douchebags to evolve -- that's kind of what makes them douchebags -- but I think I know what they're getting at.
The full list of announced panels is below. And, hey, it's not too late to submit your feature...
