The Primetime Emmys take place on September 20 and air live coast-to-coast on ABC. But the majority of awards are handed out at the five Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies that take place in the week leading up to TV’s biggest night. The Creative Arts trophies will be awarded at five events on: September 14 (reality and nonfiction; Sept. 15 (variety); Sept. 16; Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 (mix). The first four of these will stream live on Emmys.com while the last will air on Fxx.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced TV productions, film shoots and entertainment events to shut down all year to slow the spread of the easily transmitted disease, all of this year’s Emmy ceremonies will be held virtually. While Jimmy Kimmel emcees just one show — the Emmys next Sunday — Best Reality Host nominee Nicole Byer (“Nailed It”) has been tapped to preside over all five of the Creative Arts awards.

While director Hisham Abed joined the Queer Eye family just last year, he has quickly become an integral part of it. Winning his first Emmy in 2019 for his work on Season 3, Abed is back in the running this year, with an episode showcasing his ability to create intimate, complicated and authentic work within the reality space.
Created by David Collins, the Emmy-winning pop culture phenomenon centers on The Fab Five, a group of “make better” experts that travels from city to city, to shed a light on heroes within various communities, and help them improve upon their already extraordinary lives, by offering insights on grooming, design, culture and lifestyle, fashion, food and wine.
This year, Abed’s Emmy submission was Episode 2, “Disabled but Not Really.” Centered on Wesley Hamilton, a young man who was shot, became paralyzed and turned his life around, the episode brings Wesley face to face with...

“I am overjoyed and thrilled to be nominated, yet again. It’s amazing!” admits Emmy-winning director Hisham Abed about his second consecutive Emmy nomination for directing “Queer Eye.” Watch the full interview with Abed above, who won the category last year.
In addition to recognizing Abed, the TV Academy has also awarded Netflix’s reality reboot in the Best Structured Reality Program category the last two years (2018-2019). This year, among the show’s seven nominations across the board is another chance to defend its title in the top category and a first-ever nomination in the Best Reality Host category for the “Fab Five,” i.e. experts Bobby Berk (design), Karamo Brown (culture and lifestyle), Tan France (fashion), Antoni Porowski (food and wine) and Jonathan Van Ness (grooming).

We’re two paltry weeks away from the Oscars and while the race for Best Picture continues to narrow, the Emmy race couldn’t be more wide open. That’s not to say that there aren’t a few conclusions to be drawn from TV’s winter awards cycle, but their significance remains to be seen.
Saturday night saw the Directors Guild of America step into the spotlight and celebrate the artists in their midst. Hosted by fellow director Judd Apatow, it was a ceremony even Jimmy Hoffa could love, with many winners touting the benefit of working within a strong union.
“I’m very moved by this,” “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck said of his award. “As a Swede I really believe in the power of unions and organized labor for justice and solidarity.”

When the winners of the 72nd Directors Guild of America ceremony were handed out Saturday, January 25, all eyes were on the feature film category. (Read our live blog here.) Would Sam Mendes (“1917”) continue his winning streak after claiming the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award? Would Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”), who tied Mendes with the critics, prevail with the directors guild? Or would Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) or Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”) triumph instead? Scroll down to see who won all of the film and TV categories at the 2020 DGA Awards, which took place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

The Directors Guild of America announced only a handful of nominations on the TV front on January 6, after a glitch in voting. Jill Soloway, who won in 2015 for helming “Transparent,” was left off the ballot for the series finale. So the guild is letting its members recast their votes in that category. The DGA will reveal the results of that on Friday, along with the nominees for drama series and specials. (The feature film nominations are still a go for Tuesday.)
Among Monday’s nominations, “Fosse/Verdon” led the way with three bids in the TV Movie or Limited Series race: Emmy nominees Thomas Kail and Jessica Yu are joined by Minki Spiro. Emmy champ Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), Emmy nominee Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) and Vince Gilligan (“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) round out the race.

It was a strange morning for the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Monday, as the organization announced some — but not all — of the TV nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards.
A note included in the official nomination statement explained that the nods for the Comedy Series, Dramatic Series, and Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials categories will be announced on Friday, rather than today as scheduled, due to an error related to the organization’s newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The categories in question require a re-vote, the DGA explained. Variety reported last week that the DGA sent members an email stating that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway had been mistakenly omitted from the comedy series ballot for her direction of “Transparent Musicale Finale,” and advising members to recast their vote in the category if they so chose.
Still, there were plenty of accolades to go around in the official announcement,...

“The look of the show is always aimed to be authentic, so if anything feels off or produced, it just doesn’t have a place,” Hisham Abed tells Gold Derby in his exclusive interview (watch the video above) about directing the “Queer Eye” reboot. He notes that what surprised him about the show was “how quickly a simple conversation can get so deep and so real and so heartfelt and that any one of the Fab Five is capable of doing that” and “how beautifully emotional the stories that we tell can be.” Abed explains about how shooting handheld fosters this environment, “The handheld energy is something that underscores that authenticity and it helps us move quickly and silently and we’re less encumbered by things like a tripod or a dolly that you might have on a scripted show or even some competition shows.”

Six years after MyNetwork TV’s failed attempt to launch U.S. versions of Spanish-language telenovelas as daily primetime soaps, Nickelodeon is giving it a shot. The cable network, in partnership with Mexican TV giant Televisa, has ordered 80 episodes of a daily, one-hour U.S. adaptation of the popular Mexican telenovela Reach For A Star (Alcanzar una Estrella) for Nick at Nite. Reach For A Star, which follows a teenage girl whose life changes completely when she becomes a star and wins the love of her teen idol, will be produced in association with Sony Pictures TV, with filming slated to begin in March for a premiere later this year on Nickelodeon’s nighttime block. Nickelodeon has already had success with an imported primetime soap, Canadian teen drama Degrassi. Reach For A Star will be co-executive produced by Emmy-winner Jill Farren Phelps (General Hospital) and Hisham Abed (The Hills). Josh Griffith...

"Modern Family" E.P. Steve Levitan is amongst the just-announced Director's Guild Award nominees for his the first episode of the series he directed himself -- last season's "Hawaii." (Which basically means that he got a trip to Hawaii and a nom out of the deal. Not bad.)

The DGA revealed their nominees for the best direction of 2010 today and for the most part, they were pretty expected. Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, and The Pacific all had multiple episodes/installments nominated in their respective categories, but joining them in being nominated (though not necessarily in the same category) were an episode from The Hills, an episode of Glee that wasn't received terribly well, and Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.
