Body Double (Brian De Palma)
When rewatching Body Double for the third time, its most striking element was, as on my first viewing, Craig Wasson’s performance. As central character Jake Scully, Wasson turns his conventionally attractive looks into an endlessly fascinating nebbishness and awkwardness. In an early scene, Jake simply walks to his car and jumps in the driver’s seat, yet Wasson manages to turn this casual action into one of the most amusing instances of purposefully bad acting. This unquestionably intended ridiculousness in fact informs an audience of the approach required by the entire film: just as it is difficult to take this ludicrous failed actor and naïve man seriously, Body Double itself is better enjoyed with a grain of salt.

“I really, really am completely thrilled that we have been noticed,” remarks Jenny Beavan about her Oscar nomination for the costume design for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” The film, a delightful tale in which a working-class London widow (Leslie Manville) pursues her dream of owning a House of Dior haute couture dress, proved a unique challenge for the costumer, who had to furnish the designer gowns “on a modest budget, in covid, in a city I didn’t know with a crew I never met before, in Hungarian.” As a result, she expresses how she feels “incredibly proud” of the work and is thrilled to share this acknowledgement with her crew. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is based on the 1958 novel by Paul Gallico. Beavan is no stranger to literary adaptations, having previously worked on a host of Merchant Ivory films based on novels,...

Producer Guillaume Benski explains how the hit film came to be made.
“It wasn’t supposed to be this big,” says producer Guillaume Benski of the international box office success of Anthony Fabian’s Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, starring Lesley Manville and Isabelle Huppert.
The English-language film, produced by Benski’s Paris and London-based Superbe Films, with Xavier Marchand’s MoonRiver, has grossed approximately 30m worldwide since its release in July 2022. It opened first in North America via Focus Features, grossing 10.3m. Universal Pictures then opened Mrs Harris around the world where it has performed particularly well in the...

A cleaning lady with a simple dream. A long-awaited helping of luck. A visit to a magical city and a series of unlikely encounters which transform her life. Films like this are not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you like yours with four spoonfuls of sugar and a cake on the side, this will be just the thing.
Based on the Paul Gallico novel, but with added romance and an additional layer of happy ending, this is almost pure wish fulfilment fantasy, but it’s delivered with confidence and style. If Lesley Manville looks iconic in the title role, it’s because she has spent much of her career playing cleaning ladies or women in similar professions, frequently in Mike Leigh films. After what those characters have gone through, it seems only fair that she should get to experience something like this. Mrs. Harris, who has lost her husband in the war.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
As with every year, 2022 began with me catching up with an exceptional film I’d missed before I submitted my previous “best of” list, and ended with me belatedly seeing another excellent work that was more than worthy of inclusion. My apologies to Davy Chou, whose Return to Seoul would have been a fixture here if I’d have gotten round to it sooner.
Although not quite the embarrassment of cinematic riches that 2021 was, my honorable mentions all show that the art form is still in rude health following the pandemic, with several legendary filmmakers producing some of their most rewarding works in recent memory, many of which narrowly missed inclusion in my personal top 10. David Cronenberg recontextualized his older body horror work for an eco-parable concerned...

Manville is utterly convincing as a wide-eyed chirpy cleaner who comes into money and sets her heart on a Dior dress in this 1950s-set charmer
The last time we saw Lesley Manville in a fashion movie, she was playing the highly strung sister and business partner of Daniel Day-Lewis’s fastidious British couturier in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Now she returns in a very different fashion film set in very much the same era: the musty old 1950s, playing a chirpy London cleaning lady called Mrs Harris whose backdated war-widow pension kicks in at the same time as a win on the football pools (younger viewers may need to Google that), and she heads off to Paris with a big dream: to buy a beautiful Christian Dior gown.

There ought to be an obscure, multisyllabic German word for the very specific feeling of pride one can take in discovering cinema through one of the medium's more highly regarded classics. There are those among us who had something of a cinematic awakening while watching an indelible classic such as, say, "Citizen Kane," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Persona," "The Rules of the Game," or "The General." Conversely, there ought to be a similar term for the mixture of pride and embarrassment one feels when their cinematic awakening is instigated by something obscure or unknown. "2001" may be a great piece of cinema. But surely someone in the world fell in love with movies the first time they saw Tony Richardson's 1961 film "A Taste of Honey," or Russell Mulcahy's "Highlander 2: The Quickening."

Every year, there are always a few critically acclaimed gems that don't get quite enough traction to make an impression among the tentpole summer blockbusters, whether it be through a lackluster marketing campaign or the big dogs pushing it out. One of this summer's most pleasant surprises is "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris," a thoroughly delightful adaptation of Paul Gallico's 1958 novel about a London maid who travels to the city of lights to fulfill her dream of owning a Dior couture dress of her own.
I've never read the book upon which the film is based on, but director Anthony Fabian ("Good Hope") imbues the kind-hearted fairy tale with an exuberant amount of charm. It has the beating heart of a storybook, bolstered by a charismatic central performance from Lesley Manville.

Buoyed by a delightful performance from Lesley Manville as the titular character, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris manages to outshine even its effervescent lead to produce a heart-warming and emotionally rewarding drama.
The film relates the tale of recently widowed Ada Harris, who, after becoming entranced by a couture Dior dress, embarks on a quest to purchase one of her own. Suddenly, through a series of fortunate events, Mrs. Harris finds herself on an adventure in Paris that will resonate throughout both her own life and the House of Dior itself.
The heart and soul of the film rests on the capable shoulders of Lesley Manville, who delivers a tour de force performance as the title character. She is easily the aspect that draws the viewer into the film and thereafter keeps him/her enthralled by the events swirling and unfolding around this extremely likable cleaning lady. Similarly, Isabelle Huppert also shines as Claudine Colbert,...

It’s no surprise to those who know Lesley Manville, the London-based Olivier Award winner (Ibsen’s “Ghosts”) and 2018 Oscar nominee (Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread”), that she charmingly carries the title role in the third movie incarnation of “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” adapted by writer-director Anthony Fabian from Paul Gallico’s popular 1958 novel.
Cinephiles discovered Manville over her ten-year detour from her early musical theater career (when she was married to Gary Oldman; they raised a son) to collaborate with filmmaker Mike Leigh after 1980’s BBC movie “Grown-Ups.” After that, she helped him to create memorable characters in seven films, most notably the heartbreakingly annoying Mary in “Another Year” (2010).
Manville recently rejoined her “Vera Drake” costar Imelda Staunton in Peter Morgan’s “The Crown” Season 5 (which starts streaming this November on Netflix) as Princess Margaret to Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth, which recently wrapped in London, to be...

Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris, a kind Cinderella story for older women with a Dior twist, arrives in 978 theaters this weekend with strong reviews and great word of mouth. The film is a known property among that demo given its prime trailer treatment before Focus Features’ fan favorite Downtown Abbey: A New Era — not a bad setup.
Deadline review here. The film by Anthony Fabian with Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert and Jason Isaacs has a 92/critics, 94/audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It shares the pond with a handful of strong studio holdovers and new wide releases Paw Patrol: The Movie and drama Where The Crawdads Sing. Like Crawdads, Mrs. Harris is based on a popular book – the 1958 novel by Paul Gallico – and book clubs are prominent in a large marketing push.
Manville plays Ada Harris, a British housekeeper and widow who dreams of buying her own couture Christian Dior gown.

“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is the fourth screen adaptation of Paul Gallico’s 1958 novel “Flowers for Mrs. Harris,” which kicked off a series of bestselling books about an enchanting English cleaning woman and her unlikely international adventures. Though the tale has been filmed three times before (most popularly as a 1992 TV movie starring Angela Lansbury), director Anthony Fabian’s new adaptation seems destined to become the definitive version thanks to its exquisite evocation of post-wwii Europe and the delicacy with which it tells its simple but heartfelt story.
In the film, the title character played by Lesley Manville is inspired to change her life when she lays eyes on her employer’s Christian Dior dress; the British housekeeper is so dazzled that she scrapes together all the money she can and travels to Paris to get her own Dior gown straight from the source. Like “Gone with the Wind,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and “The Help” before it, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is the adaptation of a native Southern female writer’s best-selling debut novel that sold millions. Its predecessors were box-office hits and Best Picture Oscar nominees, each winning in a least one major category. However, “Crawdads” may see a very different outcome: To understand the radical changes in the theatrical landscape, look no further than the best-selling adaptation.
At the upper reaches of industry projections, “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony) won’t provide memorable box office. Opening numbers range from 8 million to 18 million for the 25 million production, making it one of the lower opening weekends for a wide studio release this summer.
That’s also why it’s interesting: What’s it doing here? It’s the furthest thing from a franchise film. It’s also aimed at adults, skewed toward women.

Mid-century high fashion and an irresistibly charming Lesley Manville add sparkle to the sweet, light-as-air Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, an uplifting tale in which an older British house cleaner falls in love with a Dior dress and decides she must have one of her own. It is a grown-up fairy-tale that fits neatly into a familiar genre of British films dealing with the divide between the working class and the aristocratic one. Set in 1957, Mrs Harris Goes To Paris also showcases mid-century couture fashion, with recreations of actual Christian Dior period dress designs, with other visual delights by costume designer Jenny Beavan, the creative force behind the fashions in last year’s Cruella.

For the new Focus Features film Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, based on Paul Gallico’s 1958 novel, costume designer Jenny Beavan takes on re-creating the looks of the legendary Christian Dior, who revolutionized fashion in 1947 with the introduction of his sumptuous wasp-waisted, full-skirted and rounded-shoulder “New Look” silhouette.
“Oh gosh, it was a really tough one,” says Beavan, about balancing the depiction of a captivating story and Dior’s enduringly influential design, which serves as a central plot device in the Anthony Fabian-directed fashion fable.
In 1957 London, brokenhearted housekeeper Ada Harris (Lesley Manville) is mesmerized by her aristocratic employer’s floral-appliquéd Dior gown, christened “Ravissante.” The glimmering confection serves as a sartorial catalyst for Mrs. Harris, still mourning her husband’s WWII disappearance, to feel love again as she embarks on a Parisian adventure to secure her own Dior.

A housekeeper waltzing into Christian Dior and choosing a couture gown may sound like the height of fantasy, but the biggest stretch in Anthony Fabian’s “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” may be all the nice French people she meets along the way. Starring the inimitable Lesley Manville, in a role that effectively transitions the frequent Mike Leigh collaborator into the Helen Mirren phase of her career, “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is a charming confection of a middle-aged, middle-class fantasy.

Originally published in 1958, Paul Gallico's Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris, also known as Flowers for Mrs. Harris, is the first book in a series about the adventures of an English cleaning woman in her sixties. This particular novella concerns the widowed charwoman who, after falling in love with her employer's French fashions, becomes fixated on the idea of buying a Dior dress for herself. As the title suggests, she goes to Paris to achieve that goal, embarking on what can only be described as a midcentury fairytale. Way before Lesley Manville decided to step into Mrs. Harris' shoes for the 2022 production, the story was already adapted for the screen. Beyond filmed media, there's even a musical that premiered in Sheffield's Crucible Theater in 2016.

Good luck finding a sweeter, more innocent film in 2022: “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is a rapturous adaptation of the classic 1958 novel by Paul Gallico (“The Poseidon Adventure”), in which a kindly person pursues their goals, which are always just slightly out of reach. It’s a formula that’s custom-designed for audience satisfaction, and when it’s done right it’s nothing short of a miracle.
“Mrs. Harris,” directed by Anthony Fabian (“Louder Than Words”), tells the story of Ada Harris (Lesley Manville), a cleaning lady in 1950s London. Her husband went missing in the war, and she’s spent the last decade-and-a-half waiting for him to return, doing difficult jobs for rich people who don’t appreciate her. When word finally arrives of her husband’s fate, Ada Harris realizes it’s time to stop waiting and make her own dreams come true.

There’s a wonderful symmetry to the lead casting of Lesley Manville in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, playing a woman who’s the flipside of Cyril, her role in Phantom Thread. That character glided around a mid-’50s London couture atelier with icy ownership, fiercely protective of her dress designer brother and his classical creations. As Mrs. Harris, Manville dreams of accessing a similarly privileged world of sartorial splendor, one in which her age and class make her seem an unlikely interloper. The beauty of her performance in this delightful fairy tale for grown-ups is the way in which her purity of heart and inherent goodness gently pry open those closed doors.
Manville has excelled at playing characters on the brittle, aloof, even villainous end of the spectrum; she was a viciously tyrannical matriarch in Let Him Go and the juiciest of schemers in Harlots.

For those tired of movies in which something as grand as the fate of our existence is at stake — threatened by aliens or wizards or something so far removed from reality — the simply titled and even more simply plotted “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” offers a pleasant reprieve. Here, in a fresh adaptation of Paul Gallico’s 1958 novel, we get an arm’s-reach fairy tale about an indefatigably chipper English charwoman whose most ardent dream is to own a gown from Christian Dior.
Mrs. Harris’ goal may not seem so far-fetched, but it can only be realized by stepping out of her comfort zone, which means saving up her pennies and making a trip across the Channel to the land of Chanel, where dresses are made to order and what she craves is pronounced “Creest-yon Dee-yor.” This is 1957 we’re talking about, and the most exclusive French fashion houses don...

Vincente Minnelli took a break from musicals to feature Judy Garland in the first movie to show her dramatic acting range, a charming and thoughtful wartime tale in New York: a whirlwind romance goes from nothing to marriage in 48 hours. She’s a working woman and he’s a soldier shipping out for combat; the miracle is that the whole thing is believable, and resolutely unglamorized. The illusion of ‘ordinary life’ in NYC is remarkable for 1945; star Robert Walker leaves behind the gangling bumpkin character he’d been playing. Focus Features has pushed Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris from May 6 to July 15.
This is not on account of the pandemic, rather to provide the film with some breathing room against Focus’ Downton Abbey: A New Era which debuts on May 20.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris will be a moderate release and open on the same weekend as Sony’s Brad Pitt action title Bullet Train and STX horror movie Bed Rest.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris follows a seemingly ordinary British housekeeper whose dream to own a couture Christian Dior gown takes her on an extraordinary adventure to Paris. The film stars Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert, Jason Isaacs, Lambert Wilson, Alba Baptista, Lucas Bravo and Rose Williams.

Does it matter to you if a disaster movie is realistic? This is an honest question. How solid is your suspension of disbelief when it comes to airplane explosions and burning buildings, tsunamis and earthquakes? Do you sit on the couch fact-checking on your laptop while expensive catastrophes unfold on your TV?
I ask this because I was surprised to learn how much the team behind The Poseidon Adventure cared about accuracy. Paul Gallico, who wrote the original novel, was inspired by an actual trip on the Queen Mary he took in 1937, during which the ship turned on its side. And he did plenty of research to make sure it was possible for an ocean liner to be flipped entirely upside down by a rogue wave.

Into the Woods, Disney’s adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Broadway musical, could land an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, which was adapted by Lapine. It may be a stretch for Into the Woods to land in the top five, though. Adapted — or even original — musical screenplays may be discounted for the music in the Oscar race, which might be why few musicals are nominated for adapted or original screenplay. Twelve musicals have been nominated for adapted screenplay since 1929, but 2002’s Chicago was the last musical to do so.
Adapted from Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb’s 1975 musical of the same name, Chicago won six of its 13 nominations, including best picture. It was the first musical since 1968’s Oliver! to win best picture, but its screenplay lost to The Pianist.

After diving into all the great Christmas-themed slashers and horror movies like Silent Night, Deadly Night, Santa's Slay, Christmas Evil, Saint Nick, and many others, it’s sometimes hard to believe there’s another great holiday to revel in just around the corner. There might not be as many films directly centered on ushering in the New Year, but there’s plenty to keep you entertained for a few days and nights.
I realize that not everyone smiles in glee like I do as teenagers get axed and knifed. Some folks just want some alternate choices in the face of all the countdowns and variety shows they’re bombarded with every year. The list I’ve put together includes not only slasher and horror flicks, but disaster, sci-fi, and action-oriented ones as well.

With the news that the African Queen has become a tourist boat on the Nile, we look at other screen boats that have captured film fans' imaginations
Boats and films go together like the seaside and scampi. If you do not believe in the characters or the story you are doing at that moment with all your mind, strength, and will, if you don’t feel joy and excitement while writing it, then you’re wasting good white paper, even if it sells, because there are other ways in which a writer can bring in the rent money besides writing bad or phony stories.” – Paul Gallico

Chicago – When Wolfgang Petersen’s “Poseidon” crashed and sank in the wave of summer hits of 2006 — making only $60 million domestically on a reported budget of $160 million — I thought the film got an undeserved bad rap (and it actually did much better internationally). It’s no classic and my love for the Irwin Allen era disaster films might have disguised some flaws but it looks and sounds great on Blu-ray.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
Looking at it now, two things are immediately apparent. First, the movie isn’t nearly as bad as you remember. It’s a well-made slice of escapism that clocks in at a lean 98 minutes; a minor miracle in the age of bloated summer blockbusters. And it has a sound design that’s truly remarkable, something very noticeable with the Blu-ray’s DTS-hd Master Audio English 5.1 track. The other thing you’ll notice is how far special effects have come in just four years.
