The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about a topic in the wider film conversation.Oppenheimer.“If there’s a sense of disconnect between what’s on stage and the outside world,” Alison Willmore writes of the 96th Academy Awards in Vulture, “Hollywood’s always declared itself the kingdom of dreams.” That might well be true, but the ceremony’s ostrichlike indifference toward some of the issues dominating global headlines this year felt especially jarring. While pro-Palestine protesters outside the theater blocked traffic and held signs with messaging like, “What good is art that ignores genocide,” only Jonathan Glazer, director of the Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest (all films 2023 unless otherwise noted), which was crowned Best International Film, dared to address the bloodshed in Gaza and Israel. Per Time’s Judy Berman, his speech, which connected the unspeakable atrocities of the past to the horrors of today,...

Given the strong slate of this year’s Oscar nominees, the pre-Academy Awards season has been devoid of the intrigues and mud-slinging of previous epochs. Oops! – could a new outbreak of Barbie-phobia break the harmony and bring naysayers out of the shadows?
I already hear a few negative murmurs: Not only is Barbie suddenly “a bad movie,” but Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon, as his director originally planned. And Oppenheimer was a brilliant movie but arguably could have focused on a different physicist.
While most of us are disposed to admire the Oscar Best Picture nominees, and may even vote accordingly, this is the moment when we always hear from grumpy film nerds. They led the wave of indignation in 1982 when Et was critiqued for lacking the cultural depth of Gandhi. Et made us smile, not yawn, it was later pointed out,...

Editor Jennifer Lame’s work has appeared on many of the world’s largest screens this year. Over the summer, her second movie with director Christopher Nolan, his historical epic Oppenheimer, for Universal, had moviegoers scrambling for tickets to Imax’s large-format theaters. And in October, the Lame-edited Postcard From Earth, from director Darren Aronofsky, became the first movie to debut at the newly opened Sphere in Las Vegas.
Speaking to the success of Nolan’s drama about the father of the atomic bomb, Lame says, “I really enjoy cutting people in rooms talking. When I first read the script, I was ripping through the pages. For me as an editor, I want to replicate that experience when I get the footage.” On the alternating use of color and black-and-white, she says that Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema created a palette where, generally, color images represent the perspective of...

Oppenheimer.Much of the praise for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has highlighted the strength of its ensemble cast. Cillian Murphy has garnered considerable acclaim for his cold and haunted performance as the eponymous father of the atomic bomb, and so has Robert Downey Jr. as his vindictive foil, Admiral Lewis Strauss. Less has been said about Matt Damon’s supporting portrayal of one of the most pivotal figures in the J. Robert Oppenheimer story: Major General Leslie Groves, the American military man who oversaw the Manhattan Project, and hired Oppenheimer. Gruff, difficult to please, exacting in his military objectives, and occasionally comic, Damon plays him with the understated, reliably solid craft that’s defined his career. And in what has proven to be characteristic of Damon’s screen presence, he plays Groves as less conservative than he first appears: he’s a character who’s willing to gently undercut received...

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won Best Original Screenplay together in 1998 for “Good Will Hunting,” which also earned Damon a Best Actor bid. Since then, they’ve had a separate Oscars history. Damon was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2010 for “Invictus,” then reaped another Best Actor bid in 2016 for “The Martian.” And, in 2017, he scored a Best Picture nomination for “Manchester by the Sea.” Affleck, meanwhile, has scored only one other Oscar nomination since his “Good Will Hunting” writing win. That was for Best Picture for “Argo” in 2013. He did win that award, though. Neither has taken home an Oscar for acting but that could this year.

What can't Christopher Nolan do? He revitalized the entire public conception of Batman at a time when everyone's most recent frame of reference was the disasterpiece known as "Batman & Robin." He made his first "One for me" project after "The Dark Knight" into a big-budget, byzantine dreamscape called "Inception" that had audiences both entertained and struggling to make sense of it for weeks. And finally, against all odds, he somehow turned a stuffy, three-hour biopic about one of the most controversial public figures and events in world history into a genuine pop culture event that's come within a whisker of the hallowed billion-dollar benchmark.
So, naturally, the acclaimed filmmaker has now decided to become the next Nostradamus and take a shot at predicting how the world will actually end. Spoiler alert: He's pretty sure that Cillian Murphy's final line of dialogue in the film is doomed to come true.

It’s easy to take the underrated Matt Damon for granted. For one thing, he looks like he could be the assistant manager of your local Ralphs. He’s neither particularly handsome nor bad looking. He also has a habit, in life and on screen, of rarely calling attention to himself. So it’s easy to miss him. You know he’s there, you know he’s good, but you’re still not necessarily going to single him out for a rave. Why? Because he’s perhaps even more of an everyman than the guy we’ve come to attach to the term, Tom Hanks. Yes, all Damon does is put his head down and turn in sterling work. Every. Single. Time.
Typically, few people are talking about Damon being a serious Oscar contender in 2024. But he’s got a decent shot all the same – two of them, in fact.

L to R: Dylan Arnold is Frank Oppenheimer and Matt Damon is Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer, written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. At first glance, it would have seemed like Oppenheimer wouldn’t exactly be blockbuster movie material. Yes, J. Robert Oppenheimer’s name is in the history books, but he was far from being a household name to today’s moviegoing audience. So, what turned Oppenheimer’s story into one of the year’s biggest movies? Matt Damon gives most of the credit to Christopher Nolan, who both wrote the screenplay and directed the movie, because of his skill in turning complex ideas into scenes everybody can understand. Understandably, there has been a lot more interest in the life and times of J. Robert Oppenheimer after Christopher Nolan's biographical drama has taken cinemas by storm. Nolan's all-encompassing film, based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's Pulitzer-winning novel "American Prometheus," gives a detailed reconstruction of what it was like to head the team that would go on to create the atomic bomb. In all likelihood, "Oppenheimer" will stand as the definitive account of the Manhattan Project and its aftermath.
Over the years, there have been multiple attempts to tell Oppenheimer's story, including the 1989 war drama "Fat Man and Little Boy" starring Paul Newman and John Cusack. The modern stage retelling, "Doctor Atomic," by the Metropolitan Opera even delves into the physicist's private life while still managing to deliver a show-stropping recreation of the first detonation of the A-bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

As we approach another anniversary of August 9, those who participated in “the decision” are all but gone.
But the reminders are with us, thanks to a new book by Evan Thomas, “Road to Surrender,” the forward for which reads “To save lives, it was necessary to take lives — possibly hundreds of thousands of them.” And, of course, Christopher Nolan’s epic portrait of the man who was never allowed to forget, Robert Oppenheimer.
We can’t hide under our desks anymore, but we can view ten other works that scared the hell out of us.

New Delhi, July 30 (Ians) J. Robert Oppenheimer may come across as a brooding scientist with an overwrought conscience and penchant for misquoting the Bhagavad Gita, but he was also a romantic whose first serious affair unwittingly led to the unravelling of his career.
This romance continued even after the physicist married German-born Katherine ‘Kitty’ Oppenheimer, a biologist, card-carrying communist and alcoholic prone to accidents, played by Emily Blunt in Christopher Nolan’s film.
The affair was with his fellow scientist, Jean Tatlock, played by Elizabeth Pugh. It disgraced Oppenheimer in US political circles, ruining his image and his life. And this is how it happened.
Tatlock and Oppenheimer met at a house party in 1936 when she was a student at Stanford Medical School and he was a physics professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The two had a 10-year age gap, but Tatlock was the love of Oppenheimer’s life.

Matt Damon has few regrets — except turning down James Cameron’s 2009 “Avatar,” and he’s now explaining why.
The actor, who plays army general Leslie Groves in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” detailed in a recent Chris Wallace interview why he had to walk away from starring in Cameron’s $2.8-billion-grossing original space epic. Damon previously said that his salary plus backend box office profits on “Avatar” would have netted the actor at least $250 million.
“I’m sure it’s the most money an actor ever turned down, you know?” said Damon, who at the time was under contract to complete the action-espionage “Bourne” series. By the time “Avatar” production ramped up, Damon had completed “The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” and was shooting 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum,” with “Legacy” and “Jason Bourne” still to come.

In a recent, now-viral interview, Matt Damon talked about how he told his wife that he would cut down on the amount of work he does and give her more time than before, but he would make an exception if Chris Nolan called. Damon, a Hollywood A-lister who first worked with Nolan on Interstellar (2015), where he had a very impactful cameo, has always been a vocal admirer of the director. He would probably take on any role if it was a Nolan project. Because a role in a Christopher Nolan film is sacred—at least, that’s how so many people in the business perceive it. And it makes sense, too, considering how Nolan uses his actors.

Films about the end of the world are nothing new. But films about the real end of the world–the moments in human history that seem to have put us on an inevitable path toward our own self-destruction–are less frequent. In the 1950s, as the Cold War took hold and the threat of nuclear war escalated, most of the films that came out dealt with it in terms of metaphor, usually sci-fi ones, like giant irradiated lizards and insects standing in for hydrogen bombs.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer addresses one of those moments in history head-on, giving us not just a glimpse into the tormented mind of the “father of the atomic bomb,” but a you-are-there, immersive front row seat to the very moment in which the first bomb was detonated and the end of the human race came into clear view, starting with what many now consider to...

Edward Teller and J. Robert Oppenheimer, two renowned scientists who shared a common vision for atomic research, found themselves at odds due to their differing ethical concerns. Among the annals of scientific feuds, such as the disagreements between Einstein and Bohr or Dawkins and Gould, the clash between Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, and Edward Teller, known as the father of the Hydrogen bomb, played a significant role in shaping the course of history.
In Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, Oppenheimer, which needs no further explanation about its grand portrayal of the consequences of the atomic explosion in Oppenheimer’s life, we are exposed to the intricate relationship between Hungarian physicist Edward Teller and Robert J. Oppenheimer. Although Nolan didn’t grant Edward Teller’s character (played by Benny Safdie) extensive screen time to fully portray the conflicting relationship, he skillfully alluded to their differences of opinion, which later...

Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is a biopic, but if the early buzz is anything to go by, it's also about as taut a thriller as you're ever likely to see. As Emily Blunt, who stars as the titular scientist's wife, told TotalFilm, the "pulse-racing" three-hour epic is "almost like [Nolan has] Trojan-Horsed a biopic into a thriller." Which, considering its dramatic subject matter and the global socio-political tension that characterized that period in history, isn't too surprising.
Aside from recreating a nuclear explosion without using CGI to mimic 1945's infamous Trinity nuclear test, "Oppenheimer" has, by its own director's admission, a bit of a horror element. Although Nolan claims his film "fights against" this "darkness" which emerged during the editing process, that darkness is nonetheless there. And it's not difficult to imagine why.

Decades before Christopher Nolan set his sights on a movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer, a science-obsessed BBC executive ventured to America in 1979 to make a $1.5 million TV show about the father of the atom bomb.
Peter Goodchild began his career at the BBC in radio drama, but eventually migrated to the storied “Horizon” science unit to put his chemistry degree to some use. The division began experimenting with factual dramas in the 1970s, and after delivering a hit series on French-Polish physicist Marie Curie, Goodchild set his sights on the New York-born Oppenheimer.
“I’d seen a play on J. Robert Oppenheimer at the Hampstead Theatre Club way back in 1966,” the 83-year-old tells Variety from his home in Exeter, southwest England, where his Zoom background reveals a room teeming with books on heaving shelves.

In the first two hours of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, except for one, not a single conversation exceeds a minute. That one scene is, of course, the pivotal one where Leslie Groves, played by an impeccable Matt Damon, is trying to convince Robert Oppenheimer to join the hush-hush Manhattan Project. But other than that, every single scene clocks under one minute, and we move from one to another at lightning speed. Not to mention, there are two separate narratives, both non-linear. Yet it doesn’t feel convoluted at all. In fact, it is just the opposite. Despite primarily falling into the bracket of the biopic genre, Oppenheimer feels taut and exhilarating. Not a single second of it feels boring or unnecessary. And for that very reason, we should applaud Jennifer Lame’s crisp editing. As coincidence would have it, Lame happens to be a frequent collaborator of director Noah Baumbach,...

Is "Oppenheimer" Christopher Nolan's best, most ambitious film yet? That might sound hard to believe from the director who delivered a movie with a complicated series of timelines in "Memento," an entire "Batman" trilogy, the dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream meticulousness of "Inception," more timeline shenanigans with "Dunkirk," and, oh yeah, that feature-length excuse to film things in reverse known as "Tenet." But even with all those examples under Nolan's belt, what else would you call a movie adaptation of J. Robert Oppenheimer's definitive biography, "American Prometheus," seeking to unravel the brilliance, guilt, and hypocrisy at the heart of such a controversial and paradoxical figure in history? As brought to life with such nuance by Cillian Murphy, this is a protagonist -- and, by extension, an entire story -- unlike any other that Nolan has attempted to tackle before.
That story plays out in quintessential Chris Nolan fashion, unspooling in two separate timelines delineated by on-screen subheads: "Fission,...

Five-time Oscar nominee Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, focuses on the race to create the ultimate weapon to end World War II and bring the soldiers home. The movie delves into the life of Robert Oppenheimer, who is widely regarded as “The Father of the Atomic Bomb.”
The film begins with Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, depicted as a brilliant but socially awkward man who attends prestigious colleges in Europe and is light years ahead of all his professors. Robert attends a communist party meeting where he meets Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh), a known communist. The two begin a tumultuous relationship marked by both passion and conflict.
It’s while Oppenheimer’s running the quantum physics department at the University of California, Berkeley, that the military starts eyeing him for a special project.

The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and two films explore that abiding Robert Burns proverb this week: Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s IMAX-sized three-hour biopic of the “father of the atomic bomb,” and Barbie, a Mattel-sanctioned deconstruction of the patriarchy from the fertile mind of Greta Gerwig. Only one of these summer blockbusters, however, boasts a number of sex scenes, and it isn’t the one starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, is the biggest spectacle of the year or the one you shouldn’t miss. This is a mind-blowing film that makes me urge you to go and watch it in theatres after Top Gun: Maverick.
Cillian Murphy stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age. He is joined by an impressive cast including Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, Oppenheimer’s military handler, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission .

The film, as the title suggests, is the story of Oppenheimer, not the story of the atom bomb and the Second World War, but truly the life of Oppenheimer and his moral dilemma.

This article contains mild Oppenheimer spoilers.
At 8:15 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber called the Enola Gay arrived at its target above the heart of Hiroshima, Japan. Below was a city that had been left relatively untouched by the ravages of the brutal Second World War. That changed to horrifying effect after the B-29 dropped its payload above a bridge at the city’s center: an atomic bomb codenamed “Little Boy.” It would be the first nuclear weapon deployed in anger in the history of humanity. The second came three days later when another A-bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki.
Nearly 80 years later, the carnage and horror these weapons inflicted remain infamous. With each bomb, 40,000 people—men, women, and children—were vaporized in an instant by the heat of an atomic flash. Thousands more perished from the devastation inflicted by the fireball which followed.

The ticking time bomb is one of cinema’s most familiar tropes. Ten seconds until detonation, a big red button, our heroes fate precariously in the balance. All of this features in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, except this is real. Usually the hero has to save the day, to stop the aforementioned bomb from untold damage, more often than not preventing the explosion with just a single second to go. But in this instance, the hero of the piece created the damn thing.
J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) was a visionary; a theoretical physicist who wasn’t restricted in conventional thinking, with a keen fascination into quantum mechanics. His progressive, unorthodox teaching methods caught the attention of the army, as Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) headhunted Oppenheimer to oversee the Los Alamos project, with the intention of creating and building an atomic bomb, before the Nazis do, in a bid to...

In true Christopher Nolan fashion, Oppenheimer is a lot of movie. As usual, the often brilliant and sometimes equally frustrating auteur has set out to make the ultimate of whatever genre he’s working in, whether it’s the superhero movie with The Dark Knight, the techno-thriller with Inception, or the mind-bending space travel epic with Interstellar.
In this case, he’s made the final word on biopics about controversial 20th century scientists: an exhaustive and exhausting look at the rise and fall of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist widely credited as “the father of the atomic bomb.” Oppenheimer is the man who oversaw the American scientific effort, known as the Manhattan Project, to introduce nuclear weapons to humanity. The results were terrifying.
But Oppenheimer is about more than just the man, a haunted, hard-to-know figure played with impressive backbone and clarity by Cillian Murphy in a career-defining performance.

In the beginning, there were simply explosions. Smaller bangs — the big one would come much later, in the New Mexico desert. But for J. Robert Oppenheimer, the quantum physicist who would guide the greatest scientific minds of his generation toward creating a doomsday device, it was all just a constant collision and coming apart of matter in his head. Put the man in a lab, and he’s hopeless. Let him roam in the world of theories, and Oppenheimer could hear what a mentor dubbed “the music of science.” Those...

There is a distinctly quiet moment in writer-director Christopher Nolan’s operatic and intimidatingly vast “Oppenheimer,” a brainy, brassy yet, on the whole, majestic historical biopic-thriller about the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer. The moment is part of a sequence that recounts a first in the history of humankind: the detonation of the world’s earliest nuclear weapon during the Trinity test explosion, that some of the universe’s top scientific brains carried out as part of the “Manhattan Project.”
It was days before the U.S. dropped a pair of replica atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to a shatteringly devastating aftermath that brought a definitive end to WWII while claiming hundreds of thousands of human lives and launching a nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

It struck me watching Christopher Nolan’s masterful three-hour epic telling of the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, long labeled the Father of the Atomic Bomb, that this is a period piece with an exclamation point for audiences today.
In the 1940s, Oppenheimer and a team of brilliant scientists traveled into the unknown to create the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, the A-bomb, but with the noble reason that its use could be an end to war, its explosive and wide-ranging ability to tear apart vast areas of the planet would be used ultimately as a deterrent, not an endgame. It would be used against Nazi Germany in World War II, an answer to Hitler’s own demented vision of world dominance and annihilation. But anytime you are doing something never done in the whole history of humanity, there is risk, moral questions, unintended consequences and the possibility of building a monster even Dr.

Prior to taking on the role of General Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer, Matt Damon redefined the concept of “a free pass” while promising his wife in couples therapy that he would take an acting break with one exemption: a call from Christopher Nolan.
“This is going to sound made up, but it’s actually true,” Damon revealed in an Entertainment Weekly roundtable. “I had — not to get too personal — negotiated extensively with my wife that I was taking time off. I had been in Interstellar, and then Chris put me on ice for a couple of movies, so I wasn’t in the rotation, but I actually negotiated in couples therapy – this is a true story — the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called.”

Cillian Murphy, the star of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming biopic Oppenheimer, has shared some details about the filming process and how he prepared for the role of the American physicist who led the development of the atomic bomb.
In an interview on Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast, Murphy revealed that the film was shot in a record time of 57 days, despite being a huge production with massive sets and a large ensemble cast. He said that Nolan’s approach was very fast and efficient, with minimal crew and equipment.
“The pace of that was insane. The sets are huge, but it feels like being on an independent movie. There’s just Chris and the cameraman. One camera always, unless there’s some huge, huge set piece, and the boom op and that’s it. There’s no video village, there’s no monitors, nothing. He’s a very analog filmmaker.

Despite making some of the most revered sci-fi movies of the past few decades, Christopher Nolan does not use modern technology, like email or smartphones. According to a Hollywood Reporter interview with the British director behind “Oppenheimer”, his latest theatrical release, it’s about avoiding distractions that come with having advanced devices.
“I think technology and what it can provide is amazing. My personal choice is about how involved I get,” Nolan says in an interview with the trade publication. “It’s about the level of distraction. If I’m generating my material and writing my own scripts, being on a smartphone all day wouldn’t be very useful for me.”
And because he doesn’t use email, that means he has a different method of getting copies of his scripts to his cast members: hand delivering them. “People will say, ‘Why do you work in secrecy?’ Well, it’s not secrecy,...

One windy night in March 2022, in the desert outside Belen, New Mexico, Cillian Murphy was waiting to climb a 100-foot steel tower, a copy of the one that held the first nuclear bomb ever detonated in 1945. The conditions were right for summoning the emotion of the historic scene the Irish actor was about to play as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. “You could see this sand coming up off the desert and the skies were ominous,” Murphy says. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is fucking great.’ “
Nearby, as gusts whipped at the production tents, producer Emma Thomas was having the opposite reaction. “Imax cameras shooting film in the middle of a windy desert. The absolute worst,” says Thomas. “Miserable for people. Terrible for cameras.”

"You know isotopes. And you know explosives." Time to build the bomb! Universal has revealed another new extended preview for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, opening in theaters worldwide soon. This is a "Opening Look" that is supposed to be the first five minutes, but plays more like a new trailer they cut but they can't call it a "trailer". The cast features Cillian Murphy as "Oppie", with Emily Blunt as "Kitty" Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, as well as Rami Malek, Benny Safdie,...
