Director S. Craig Zahler made his feature debut with this excellent blend of the horror and Western genres, which pits a group of men – played by Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson – against a group of cave-dwelling cannibals who have taken the wife of Wilson’s character captive. With a running time of 132 minutes, Bone Tomahawk takes its time showing the men’s journey to the tribe’s cave… but when the violence breaks out, it’s worth the wait. If you can stomach the gore.

Fantasia 2020: ‘Hail to the Deadites’ Review
Features: Bruce Campbell, Patricia Tallman, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Dan Hicks, Theresa Tilly, Richard Domeier, Tom Sullivan, Chris Alexander | Written and Directed by Steve Villeneive

There are horror franchises out there that are so beloved and have such a devoted and undyingly-passionate fanbase that they become legendary. The Evil Dead films are an example of this, their popularity still reaching incredible heights today. This documentary, directed by Steve Villeneive (Under the Scares) looks at those aforementioned fans and the admiration they have and the importance they hold towards the films themselves.

I am personally a big fan of the Evil Dead franchise, including the most recent 2013 entry, the first three classics, and the television show, Ash vs Evil Dead. I was impressed with this film which, like most well-done and entertaining docs about horror franchises, interviews a multitude of folk, from the cast and crew of the films themselves,

After years of work, Hail to the Deadites has set its world premiere. The upcoming Evil Dead documentary is set to debut at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Like most major events this year, the in-person version of the event has been scrapped in the interest of public health. Instead, the festival will be holding a digital edition that kicks off next month. The long-awaited documentary has been confirmed to be part of the lineup.

The movie takes a look at the fandom of the Evil Dead franchise. It has been in the works for quite some time, with a teaser debuting online a few years back. As the trailer reveals, the aim is not to document the history of the beloved horror series so much as it exists to provide a look at the fandom behind it. Director Steve Villeneuve had this to say about it.

Bruce Campbell Teases Crazy Plans for Bruce Vs. Frankenstein and Its All-Star Horror Cast
Celebrated B-movie star Bruce Campbell remains one of the most popular, if lesser-known, presences in movies thanks to roles in the likes of the Evil Dead franchise and the wonderfully unique Bubba Ho-Tep. A decade ago, Campbell announced that he would be making a sequel to the 2007 horror-comedy My Name Is Bruce, and that it would be titled Bruce Vs. Frankenstein. Well, now Campbell has discussed the project further, explaining that he wants the movie to be an "Expendables of horror."

"I want to get so many horror movie stars that people can't possibly not see the movie. I want to give them other stuff to do. I want to have Kane Hodder be very particular about what he eats. I want Robert Englund to be a tough guy, like he knows taekwondo or something. I want to find out the hidden sides of all these people. Some will play themselves,

Evil Dead II

With Halloween fast approaching, this writer wanted to unpack one of his all-time favorite horror movies, Evil Dead II (a.k.a. Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn). The first time I beheld the original The Evil Dead (1981), I found myself utterly terrified by the movie’s grisly carnage, completely charmed by its obvious low-fi origins, and wholly bewildered by a sense of humor that can only be described as “Three Stooges-esque.” The fact that it was made by a bunch of college dropouts from the suburbs of Michigan, through money raised largely from suburban dentists and grocers, only made its achievement all the more impressive. The movie’s charmingly crude special effects and daringly acrobatic camerawork only served to enhance its freshness, positioning it as a raw, gritty antidote to that era’s glossier, tamer studio horror fare.

The Evil Dead was merely an appetizer. Its delightfully demented successor
