The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is not short on showstopping spectacles and action scenes. But when it came time for supervising sound editor James Mather to work on what is arguably the film’s biggest moment – a death-defying motorcycle jump off a cliff that became the centerpiece of the marketing campaign – he had a great resource on which to lean: star and producer Tom Cruise.
“What’s really interesting is you’re working with the man who’s in the shot, who knows what it sounded and felt like when he did that stunt. And he wants the audience to dial into that emotion,” Mather tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “Tom’s take on [scene] was that the cut to him after we’ve gone to silence as the bike is falling away was to cut to him when he’s gliding through the air and the sound is massive.

“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” takes the spy franchise to a new level of high-octane action with the global threat of AI domination — and Tom Cruise wanted a visceral sound to the film while starring as legendary rogue agent Ethan Hunt.
“Tom wants to feel it, as only he can, having rehearsed it and filmed it many different ways as an actor and stuntman,” supervising sound editor James Mather told IndieWire. This is part of the “synaptic” philosophy of sound design that Cruse, Mather and the rest of the sound team have embraced, including last year’s Oscar-winning “Top Gun: Maverick.”
Take the brutal alley fight in Venice between Hunt and Pom Klementieff’s French assassin, Paris. The physicality of it becomes uncomfortable.
“You are in it so close to them, it feels like you’re trying to pull ’em apart,” Mather said. “And we went to town with that.

Is Tom Cruise our last bonafide movie star? Or at least one of the few remnants of an elite group of big-screen heartthrobs who leave us saying, “They don’t make ‘em like they used to?” We’ve heard several versions of this question asked again and again over the years, especially on the heels of 2022’s astonishing and disarmingly nostalgic “Top Gun: Maverick,” a heart-swelling legacy-quel that deservedly re-established and reinforced Cruise’s status as a dying breed of larger-than-life screen hero.
While it might be futile to ponder the same query once more, that doesn’t mean Cruise is done reminding us why there won’t be another one after him to burn just as brightly. And that’s not only because of our era of scattered eyeballs and shortened attention spans that sadly deems the all-encompassing brand of “movie star” nearly obsolete. The short of it is,...

The thrilling work of the Top Gun: Maverick sound team, which placed audiences into Naval aircrafts amid high-flying action, won the Oscar for best sound on Sunday, delivering Academy Awards to the team of Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor. Despite the happy moment for the team, others who worked on sound for Maverick did not have a triumphant moment at the Dolby Theatre, as they were not on the ballot.
In January, The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that the Academy’s sound executive branch found itself in a contentious situation when vetting the names that would appear on the Maverick ballot. Sources say this stemmed from the fact that there were two teams that worked on the movie at different times. One was a team at Skywalker Sound in northern California and the other from Twickenham Film Studios and Soundbyte Studios in London.

As Gold Derby predicted, “Top Gun: Maverick” won the Best Sound Oscar on March 12 over co-nominees “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman” and “Elvis.” This victory was 36 years in the making, as the original “Top Gun” (1986) was nominated in both sound races at the 1987 Oscars and lost to “Aliens” (Best Sound Effects Editing) and “Platoon” (Best Sound). Note that the two sound categories were combined into a single one beginning with the 2021 ceremony.
Accepting the Oscars win for “Top Gun: Maverick” were Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor. Prior to tonight, only Weingarten and Taylor already had trophies on their mantels, for “Dunkirk” and “1917”, respectively.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.

The key to the “Top Gun: Maverick” sound design — and why it’s the favorite to win the Best Sound Oscar — is its effective creation of the “synaptic” experience, which carried over from Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” films. It’s a hyper-real soundscape that guides the audience’s attention to important elements with dynamics rather than pummeling them with a wall of sound.
In the “Top Gun” sequel, the synaptic sound of being inside the jet fighter cockpits with Cruise’s Maverick emphasized breathing and the manipulation of the joystick, while strategically layering in the jet noises. These included the sound of air whooshing over the wings and the sonic reflection of the aerobatics. This was definitely a contributing factor to the film’s global success in bringing audiences back to theaters.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”
The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.
It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

Top: Gun Maverick is approaching a different kind of danger zone. With nomination voting underway, Maverick still doesn’t have its potential sound nominees locked up, in what has become a contentious process, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
As of Thursday afternoon, members of the Academy’s sound executive branch, which annually holds a meeting in December to vet the names submitted as contenders, was still investigating which names should appear on the ballot for Maverick, should the movie make the final five.
Sources say the impasse stems from the fact that there were two teams that worked on the movie at different times. One was a team at Skywalker Sound in northern California and the other is a team that worked at De Lane Lea in London. THR could not get clarity on specifics of the impasse at press time. But this does offer a glimpse into what...

With so much emphasis on Best Picture and acting races this Oscar season, get ready for some special attention to the crafts and artisans who made these movies possible.
American Cinematheque announced Monday its honorees for its second edition of Tribute to the Crafts, taking place on Thursday, February 9 at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. There’s a scene in “Joyride” set to the Villagers’ song “Courage,” in which lead Conor O’Brien sings, “It took a little time to get where I wanted.” Technically, it takes one hour and six minutes to get to that point, but the route was fastidiously mapped out from the very beginning.
Just like its on-the-nose soundtrack, the rest of this Irish drama is as plain as day — with one exception. Why would Olivia Colman, a regular at Oscar and Emmy ceremonies and recipient of overall critical and audience adoration, waste her time with such a pandering project?
In fact, Colman was at the Academy Awards this very year with a nomination for her bracingly complex portrayal of parenthood in “The Lost Daughter.” So it’s a bit baffling to find her in a movie that feels like a faith-based social warning made in the 1950s, and designed expressly to...

When “Top Gun: Maverick” landed in theaters this summer, audiences around the world enjoyed the excitement of soaring through the sky alongside the Navy’s best of the best. One key to creating that sensation was building the perfect soundscape.
Director Joseph Kosinski describes the challenge, saying, “‘Top Gun’ was the test disc for everyone’s home entertainment system.” Adding to a monumental task were the restrictions brought on by the pandemic, as well as months of military negotiations, Navy contracts and detailed planning to bring the story of Maverick (Tom Cruise) back to the big screen.
Early on, supervising sound editor Al Nelson and sound effects editor Ben Burtt spent a week in the Atlantic aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Nelson recalls, “The idea was, ‘Let’s just get as much great raw material as we can.’” They collected a variety of sounds that included takeoffs and landings, radios,...

With summer hits “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount), “Nope” (Universal), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24) being given Oscar pushes for Best Picture, it will definitely impact the craft races as well. So while we await the coming of the two fall behemoths — “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel/Disney) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2oth Century/Disney) — let’s assess where the summer trio of blockbusters have the best craft opportunities.
Joseph Kosinski’s high-octane “Top Gun: Maverick” became a global phenomenon, riding a wave of nostalgia to a 1.4 billion box office take and becoming the first must-see theatrical event since the start of the Covid-18 pandemic, thanks to the filmmakers putting us thrillingly inside the cockpits of the fighter jets with Tom Cruise’s Maverick. The protagonist of “Joyride” is named Joy. Joy is seeking a ride out of town. How charmed or irked you are by this rather rudimentary wordplay may also determine your receptiveness to this soft-hearted, high-spirited Irish road movie, which takes a chipper, sometimes openly cheesy approach to fraught emotional terrain. Charting the unlikely camaraderie between a self-sufficient 12-year-old boy and a spiraling middle-aged lawyer with a newborn baby — both seeking an escape of sorts from loveless lives in a drab County Kerry town — Emer Reynolds’ film weaves pretty freely between tonal lanes, as dictated by the blend of character-rooted intimacy and sitcom-like contrivance in Ailbhe Keogan’s script. “Joyride” needs some deft actors driving it, and it has lucked out: An up-for-anything Olivia Colman and scrappy newcomer Charlie Reid make for an unlikely but appealing buddy duo.

The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. And each time Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner,” Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver enters a new landscape, the sound design clues us into what’s going on.
Here are our current predictions in alphabetical order. No movie will be deemed a frontrunner until I see it.
Frontrunners:
Will Files (“War for the Planet of the Apes”)
Richard King (“Dunkirk”)
Mark Mangini (“Blade Runner 2049”)
James Mather (“Wonder Woman”)
Julian Slater (“Baby Driver”)
Contenders:
Craig Berkey (“Darkest Hour”)
Richard Hymns (“The Post”)
Eric A. Norris, Steven Ticknor (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”)

Did you notice similarities between Luc Besson's action thriller Lockout and John Carpenter's post-apocalyptic classic Escape from New York?
John Carpenter definitely did - so he sued Besson, his co-writers Stephen Saint Leger and James Mather, as well as production company EuropaCorp for copyright infringement in France.
In Lockout, a criminal goes on a near-suicide mission to rescue the president's daughter from a heavily armed no-man's land. Sound familiar?
A French court undertook an extensive examination of both screenplays and subsequently ruled in Carpenter's favour, according to Observatoire européen de l'audiovisue.
Among the similarities between the two films, the court listed: "A number of elements present in both New York 1997 [French name for Escape from New York] and Lock-Out could, in fact, be considered as stock elements in the cinema.
"The court nevertheless noted many similarities between the two science-fiction films: both presented an athletic, rebellious and cynical hero, sentenced to a period of...

French producer Luc Besson (the Transporter trilogy) has made a name for himself (and others) pumping out high-octane, adrenaline-fueled schlock. Thrillers that only pause to deliver a well-timed one-liner, while a tough-as-nails hero (usually European) blasts away bad guys to save a fragile victim and complete his mission. His movies are made up of mostly standard stuff, red meat for red-blooded males, but at least they move.
Besson’s latest run-and-gun is a high-concept sci-fi noir set in the year 2079. Except the “high” concept is essentially “Escape from New York in space” since the movie lifts the entire plot, in which a wise-cracking antihero must rescue an innocent official stranded in a futuristic prison overtaken by psychotic convicts. James Mather and Stephen St. Leger share directing duties on their first feature and co-writing credits with Besson, but struggle to represent anything especially inventive. Two big films are opening this weekend, we have .The Cabin in the Woods. for horror buffs and .Lockout. for action fans. .The Cabin in the Woods. is from the brilliant minds of Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard and it stars Kristen Connolly (Dana), Chris Hemsworth (Curt), Anna Hutchison (Jules), Fran Kranz (Marty), Jesse Williams (Holden), and Richard Jenkins (Sitterson). I.ve loved Guy Pearce since .The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.. When I told the actor that near the end, there.s a funny quip you have to see!
In .Lockout,. Pearce stars as Snow, a mysterious character who.s in charge of rescuing the President.s daughter inside an outer space prison. The film lights up with Pearce.s quips and one-liners, and it reminds me of the good, old-fashioned thrillers from the 80s where the plot is simple, and the hero is an anti-hero full of witty one-liners. Co-written by producer Luc Besson (.Taken.) alongside the film.s directors Stephen St. Leger and James Mather, you.ll enjoy .Lockout. when it comes out on April 13th.

I loved meeting Maggie Grace! I.ve liked her since .Lost,. albeit briefly, and after working with Luc Besson for .Taken. (she.s also working on .Taken 2. right now), she.s back with the producer for .Lockout,. a simple sci-fi thriller about a prison in space.
In .Lockout,. Grace stars as Emilie Warnock, the President.s daughter, who suddenly finds herself trapped inside the prison. Coming to save him is Snow (played by the witty Guy Pearce), but she can save herself thank you very much! .Lockout,. co-written by Besson with the film.s directors Stephen St. Leger and James Mather, comes out on April 13th.

The 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were held tonight at which The Artist was named Best Film along with six other awards including Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Original Screenplay and Actor (Jean Dujardin). The film also took home awards for cinematography, costume design and original music. None of this comes as much of a surprise as The Artist is now, and has been for some time, considered the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars and has slowly been gaining steam in other categories including director and actor, especially as Dujardin has been charming American and international audiences with his latest Funny or Die skit and an appearance on "Saturday Night Live". In other awards, Meryl Streep won for Best Actress, adding more fuel to the competition between her and The Help's Viola Davis, a film that found itself in the winner's circle with Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress.

Well the 2012 BAFTA Awards are over (unless of course you’re watching them on a catch-up service) and the event was filled with very little surprises – The Artist repeated its success from both the Richard Attenborough Film Awards and the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and my bet (despite my love for his competition) for the Outstanding Debut Award, Paddy Considine, did walk away with that award. Of the awards Real surprises, I’m so happy for Christopher Plumer, who walked away with the Best Supporting Actor award for Beginners, and Octavia Spencer who won the Best Supporting Female award for The Help (although like many I thought that would go to Carey Mulligan for Drive).

The 2012 Orange BAFTA ceremony tonight was, as expected, dominated by Michael Hazanavicius’ silent black-and-white love story The Artist.

In the supporting category The Help’s Octavia Spencer won Supporting Actress and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, as expected.

So there we have it. The 2012 BAFTA Awards have now drawn to a close. The Artist had an amazing night taking seven awards including that of the award for Best Film. Michel Hazanavicius’s black and white silent film also took awards for Best Actor, Original Music, Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Screenplay, Best Director and Leading Actor. Simply amazing!
Senna came away with two out of the three awards it was nominated for including Best Editing and Best Documentary which was a new category for this year.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film but a rather big surprise was that Shame directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan left empty handed. The full list of winners is below.

Hello everyone and welcome to our favourite day in the British film calendar. We’re here in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for the 65th annual BAFTA awards and while the red carpet is being ironed and our colleagues fight off the cold anticipation is building for what should be an excellent evening.
Two of the films dominating the nominations are paeans to the magic of cinema with Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo up for numerous awards though a particular favourite of ours here on HeyUGuys, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, has been championed within the Academy and find itself up for Best Film, Director and a Supporting Actress nod for Carey Mulligan.
You can follow our coverage of the awards ceremony, with details of the winners as they are announced as well as other highlights from the Awards noted down before the BBC’s...

The 2012 Orange BAFTA Awards ceremony takes place tonight at London’s Royal Opera House, the biggest night on the British film calendar once again hosted by Stephen Fry.
Going into the usual British bias/nepotism heavy show is the surprise that a French produced movie is odds on favourite to take the top prize.
Michael Hazanavicius’ delightful silent black-and-white movie is expected to take Best Film at the 65th BAFTA ceremony tonight, with George Clooney (The Descendants) and Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) favourites to win the best actor and best actress prizes. None of these people are British!!
This is somewhat unprecedented as back in September when Tomas Alfredson’s methodically paced adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy thriller Tinker Tailor Solider Spy hit cinemas with an outstanding all British ensemble and an astonishing performance from the much loved and under-appreciated Gary Oldman, it was hard to see...

BAFTA announced their 2012 film nominations today, and I really need to get out there and see The Artist! It landed the most nominations with 12. Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy got 11 noms, and Hugo got 9. I also think it's great that Drive got a Best Picture nomination, unfortunately Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 did not. It will be interesting to see who and what films take home the awards.
