17,000 fans. The reunion of an American football dynasty and the coach no one expected to show. Televised live around the world while the reputation of a man considered “the greatest of all time” sits in the hands of savage comedians and one-time foes. What could go wrong?
But here we are, just days after Tom Brady took to the stage at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles for Sunday’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time,” and the walls are still standing. For decades roast comedy has been a beloved national tradition, once shepherded on TV by Comedy Central. It was a show that often targeted Hollywood legends or zeitgeist icons. It took the willingness of Brady, who holds a record 7 Super Bowl rings, to reinvigorate the format for streaming under host Kevin Hart. And not just any roast, which would typically be shot on a Hollywood backlot and edited ahead of its premiere.

In his fourth time at the podium in the last six years, “This is 40” and “Knocked Up” director Judd Apatow will preside over the 75th Annual DGA Awards, often seen as the belwether for deciding who is favored to win the best director Oscar. The awards, which will take place on February 18, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, will honor the best in film, TV, commercials and documentaries, however, there has already been some blowback about the lack of women represented among this year’s titles.
In a statement, DGA Chair Beth McCarthy-Miller said she’s “thrilled that we landed Judd for this special anniversary DGA Awards show 75 years in the making. “If it was all rosy, you’d have no comedy. Comedy necessitates things to go awry,” Paul Reiser observes about the challenges that face his character Martin and Sarah Baker’s Mindy in the third and final season of Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method.” Baker and Reiser play an unlikely but lovely couple on the cusp of an engagement when their relationship hits an unexpected money snag. Baker credits the fact that “they’re both quirky people in different ways” for helping Mindy and Martin weather the storm. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Baker reflects on Mindy’s three-season journey on the show, saying that she feels her series arc “was a natural evolution.” Since the first episode, Mindy branches out from her relationship with father Sandy Kominsky (Michael Douglas), takes on more responsibility at his acting studio, and starts a fulfilling relationship with Martin. Bill Hader, uh, made his mark last year when he won the Directors Guild of America Award for comedy series for helming the “Barry” pilot “Chapter One: Make Your Mark.” He’s back in the running again and is the overwhelming favorite to defend his title, which would make him the ninth person to win this award twice.
Hader has a commanding lead in our predictions with 31/10 odds for the breakout Season 2 episode “ronny/lily.” The next closest is the series finale of “Veep,” by David Mandel, at 39/10, followed by three episodes of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”: “Marvelous Radio” by Daniel Palladino, “It’s the Sixties, Man!” by Dan Attias, and “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
The former “Saturday Night Live” star would join a two-time winners club that includes Andy Ackerman (“Seinfeld”), Hy Averback (“M*A*S*H”), Paul Bogart (“All in the Family”), Beth McCarthy-Miller,...

Working on a film, a director can be tied to one story for years. But in television, directors often hop from project to project in the span of months, moves that require an adaptability that comes more naturally when you join a world you did not create.

Some of that excitement comes from renewals, but the real groove sets when we get our first look at new shows.
Now you can get a taste of everything coming to CBS!
All Rise is a new courthouse drama that follows the chaotic, hopeful and sometimes absurd lives of its judges, prosecutors and public defenders, as they work with bailiffs, clerks and cops to get justice for the people of Los Angeles amidst a flawed legal process.

Among them is newly appointed Judge Lola Carmichael (Simone Missick), a highly regarded and impressive deputy district attorney who doesn’t intend to sit back on the bench in her new role, but instead leans in, immediately pushing the boundaries...

Chuck Lorre has a new comedy coming to CBS this fall titled “Bob ❤ Abishola.” If you couldn’t tell right away on your own, a name like that is going to require TV reporters who plan on covering the sitcom to either become very emoji friendly in their copy or write out “(Hearts)” over and over. TheWrap’s TV reporters can confirm that neither of these options is ideal.
So we asked CBS Entertainment president, Kelly Kahl, and CBS Entertainment senior executive vice president of programming, Thom Sherman, why they did this to us during a press briefing ahead of the network’s upfront presentation Wednesday.

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. There’s significant overlap between the two voting groups, and the DGA winner tends to be similarly awarded by the Academy — their selections have diverged only seven times since 1949. Cuarón previously won the award for “Gravity,” for which he also won the Oscar.
Here’s the full list of winners:

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Teddy Perkins or Midge Maisel? It’ll be one or the other for the TV comedy directing honor at Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards. “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are neck and neck in our combined odds.
Both shows have two episodes in the running, with a clear favorite for each. Currently, Hiro Murai, who helmed “Atlanta”‘s acclaimed “Teddy Perkins” episode has the slight edge, with 69/20 odds, to 37/10 for Daniel Palladino‘s “We’re Going to the Catskills!” from “Maisel.” “Teddy Perkins” has three Experts, four Editors and 16 Top 24 Users picking it, while “We’re Going to the Catskills!” counts four Experts, three Editors and four Top 24 Users.
In third place is “Maisel”‘s other episode, “All Alone,” by Amy Sherman-Palladino. The “Barry” pilot, directed by Bill Hader, is in fourth, and “Atlanta”‘s “Fubu” episode, helmed by Donald Glover,” is fifth.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

The Director’s Guild of America gave its stamp of approval to a number of actors-turned-directors Monday afternoon, nominating a slew of famous faces for its 2019 DGA Awards.
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”), and Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”) all landed their first DGA nominations, while Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) scored his second nomination for the series.
“Atlanta” was one of a few projects scoring multiple nominations, as Hiro Murai was also selected for his work on “Teddy Perkins” (IndieWire’s pick for the best TV episode of 2019). Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino were both nominated for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and three directors were honored from “A Series of Unfortunate Events”: Barry Sonnenfeld, Bo Welch, and Allan Arkush were all chosen in the Children’s Programs category.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 195 episodes from 105 series, up from 174 episodes from 82 series last year, when the nominees were:

Winner — “B.A.N.” (Donald Glover)
“Silicon Valley” season 4

Bill Maher: Triggered, the comic’s 11th HBO solo special since his first in 1989, will air Saturday, July 7, the network announced today. The live stand-up performance will air from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“The paradox of my life is, the more horrifying the country under Trump becomes, the more fun we have at my stand-up shows,” Maher said. “I guess it’s a release, or whistling past the graveyard, or a primal scream.
“They want me to be mean,” he continued, “and I am. Half of this show is about Trump, but I am determined to make half of it about me – my way of saying, ‘Trump, you don’t get to win!’”
Bill Maher: Triggered is executive produced by Maher, Beth McCarthy-Miller, Marc Gurvitz and Neal Marshall, and will be directed by McCarthy-Miller.
Maher’s weekly HBO series Real Time with Bill Maher is in its 16th season, and has been renewed through 2020. This week’s guests include Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter, Ethan Hawke, author Robert Reich and activist rapper Michael Render (aka Killer Mike).

Guillermo del Toro took a giant stride towards the Oscar on Saturday night (February 3), winning the outstanding directorial achievement in feature film accolade for The Shape Of Water at the Directors Guild Of America’s 70th annual DGA Awards.
Del Toro recently won the Golden Globe best directing award and further bolstered his Oscar prospects with the DGA, regarded as a strong bellwether of Academy Award success.
Since 1948, only seven DGA winners have not gone on to win the Oscar. Ben Affleck is the famous most recent example. He won the DGA for Argo in 2013 and did not even receive an Academy Award nod for the film.
Del Toro recently won the Golden Globe best directing award. Meanwhile Jordan Peele continued a remarkable awards season, winning best first-time feature director for Get Out. The 70th Directors Guild of America Awards mostly went according to plan Saturday night, February 3, with Guillermo del Toro winning Best Film Director for “The Shape of Water.” (See complete list of DGA winners.) He beat out rival nominees Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”) and Jordan Peele (“Get Out”) to take home the coveted prize bestowed annually by members of the Directors Guild of America who work in film or television.
Del Toro’s victory at the DGA Awards follows his recent directing triumphs at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. And according to Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions for Best Director, he is the overwhelming frontrunner there as well. Four of these DGA nominees also contend at the Oscars, with McDonagh being the sole exception; he was replaced by Paul Thomas Anderson (“Phantom Thread”).

More marvelous news for Amy Sherman-Palladino: The “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creator is the odds-on favorite to win the Director Guilds Award Saturday for comedy directing, according to our predictions. If she does triumph, she’ll be the fifth woman — all in the last six years — to win that honor.
Sherman-Palladino, who’s up for helming the pilot, has 5/6 combined User, Expert and Editors odds. She’s just ahead of Melina Matsoukas (21/10 odds), who’s contending for “Thanksgiving” from “Master of None.” Beth McCarthy-Miller (“Chicklet” from “Veep”) is third with 11/1 odds, followed by Aziz Ansari (“The Thief” from “Master of None) with 20/1 odds and Mike Judge (“Server Error” from “Silicon Valley”) with 80/1 odds.

While dramatic television has seen a wave of directorial ingenuity over the last 17 years (see our list of the best-directed dramas for proof), 21st century TV will probably be remembered more for the growth of vision in the comedy genre. What was once a format dominated by multi-cam sitcoms with live studio audiences has become the most auteur-driven genre on television, and the results have been some of the most creative and personal series the small screen has ever aired.

Even non-music fans can appreciate the talent and personality on display at most concerts. That’s especially true with an artist like Adele, whose live performances are where she truly shines brightest. It’s an experience that audiences beyond just a stadium full of ticket holders ought to be able to enjoy.
Re-creating that live concert experience was the challenge facing the producers and director of “Adele: Live In New York City.” The one-off special, which was filmed at Radio City Music Hall on Nov. 17 and broadcast by NBC on Dec. 14, ultimately received four Emmy nominations. Discussing the representation of women in Hollywood is never, you know, a fun topic, especially when it comes to below-the-line departments. In 2016, there are still glaring examples of a lack of progress for women.
While an improvement over years past, here’s just a quick sampling of accomplishments women were not recognized for: narration, music composition, writing in many categories, stunt coordination… There are plenty of categories, as well, where only one or two women were nominated, often with a male partner — such as Writing for a Comedy, where the sole female nominee is Sharon Horgan alongside Rob Delaney for “Catastrophe.”
But rather than dwell on that, let’s acknowledge some of the accomplished nominees who have a chance to be recognized for their achievements this year. Because regardless of gender, they’re awesome.
