When Emmy nominations were announced on July 12, artisans in the craft categories made a splash in more ways than one — some landed multiple nominations in several categories, others inched closer to achieving Egot status and many received first-time recognition.
Here, Variety looks at some of the contenders in the Creative Art categories.

This article contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities: “Dreams in the Witch House.”
By its very definition, the work of H.P. Lovecraft is often challenging to adapt properly. The massively influential early 20th century sci-fi and horror author reveled in depicting the indescribable. The terrors of Lovecraft’s “Cthulhu Mythos” are so profound that his characters are often incapable of even perceiving them without going mad. How, exactly, is any visual medium supposed to go about crafting the unseeable? According to “Dreams in the Witch House” director Catherine Hardwicke, you opt to ensnare one of the other human senses instead.
“It was almost a story written for a sound designer, in my mind,” Hardwicke says of her adaptation of the Lovecraft story of the same name. “(The story) just talks about the creaks and the sounds moving all through the witch house. I got the sound...

Guillermo del Toro joins the ranks of episodic genre anthology curators like Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling with his “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, each story contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. That singular, eponymous item doesn’t just anchor the anthology but serves as a visual representation of the type of vintage scary story collection that “Cabinet of Curiosities” unfurls.
Del Toro introduces each selected tale like a sophisticated carnival barker. A short monologue ensues as the genre maestro opens his cabinet and plucks out a representative item for each curated story along with a carved figurine of its director. Series creator and executive producer del Toro hand selected each story and director, uniting their distinct visions through a recurring theme of hidden, shifting realities. The episodes range from the macabre to classic frights to the fantastical,...

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. But was it destined to become the first film from a streaming distributor to take top honors? To achieve that the film had to battle against Apple’s “Coda,” which only had three nominations but won crucial awards from the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild, the last of which uses the same kind of ranked-choice voting as the Oscars.

Jenny Beavan won an Oscar tonight in the Best Achievement in Costume Design category for her work on Disney’s Cruella.
This is Beavan’s third Oscar win for Costume Design, having won in 2016 for Mad Max: Fury Road and in 1987 for A Room with a View.
Beavan started her acceptance speech by jokingly saying, “If you hear a really embarrassing noise, it’s probably my family somewhere up there.”
Based on the iconic villain from 101 Dalmatians, Cruella follows a young woman named Estella (Emma Stone) who dreams of being a fashion designer. When she manages to land her dream job designing for the Baroness (Emma Thompson), Estella quickly becomes convinced that she deserves more in life. Taking on the persona of Cruella, she becomes a rival of the Baroness with a rebellious sense of fashion.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.

None of the 13 precursor prizes announced winners before Oscar nominations were revealed on February 8. However, all but one of them — the Casting Society of America — revealed their roster of contenders before the start of Oscar nominations balloting on January 27. The CSA, which chimed in on February 1, will be the only guild to hold its ceremony after final Oscar voting ends on March 22; the Artios Awards are the next day.
Before Oscar voting kicked off on March 17, we heard from eight guilds. The makeup artists and hairstylists weighed in on Feb. 19 while the actors were heard from on Feb. 27. Two guilds — art directors and film editors — held ceremonies on March 5. The visual effects wizards handed out prizes on March 8, the costume designers on March 9, the directors on March 12 and the sound editors on March 13.

Last Updated March 10: “Cruella” and “Dune” received Oscar momentum as the period and sci-fi film winners March 9 at the 24th Costume Designer Guild Awards. This clearly puts “Cruella’s” two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven in the driver’s seat against “Dune’s” Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan, and “West Side Story’s” Paul Tazewell.

“Cruella” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win on March 9 at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over three of its Oscar rivals — “Cyrano,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” — plus “House of Gucci.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Dune,” which won the fantasy/sci-fi prize at the CDG Awards on Wednesday. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Coming 2 America.”
In its 23-year history, the CDG has previewed only 11 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design; eight of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last five Costume Designers Guild Awards winners two have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
In 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars.

This year’s Oscars Best Cinematography category is another fascinating one, not only due to what was nominated, but also what wasn’t nominated. Of all the black-and-white movies released last year, Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” was the only one to get a nom. “Belfast” Dp Haris Zamberloukos didn’t make the cut, despite being nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
Gold Derby’s oddsmakers have “Dune” ahead of the pack to win the Oscar with Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” close behind as a possible spoiler on Oscar night, but I’m not here to make predictions, as much as to shine a spotlight on the great work by all five nominees. Quality cinematography is clearly important to the creative success of any film. Here’s why these five contenders are worthy of their accolades.

It’s the job of movie costume designers to quite literally know every inch of an actor or actress’s body. And that impeccable tailoring creates a close bond on a film set, whether the performer knows it or not.
Take Luis Sequeira, currently an Oscar nominee for his staggering 242 costume changes on Guillermo Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley.” Sequeira decked out the whole cast, including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Toni Collette, in 1930s and 40s suits and gowns, and it was during a series of fittings with Rooney Mara that he began to, shall we say, conceive something was amiss.
“With Rooney, during each fitting, I was letting out her costumes a little bit more each time,” Sequeira told TheWrap. “And so I whispered to myself, ‘Oh, I think she’s pregnant.'”

“I’m still walking a little bit in a twilight zone,” costume designer Luis Sequeira shares about his recent Academy Award nomination for Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley.” Sequeira reunited with the director on the film after collaborating on “The Shape of Water,” for which Sequeira received his first Oscar nomination. “It was a banner year for costume, so I’m quite thankful,” he adds. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Sequeira needed to conduct a lot of research to pull off the costume design for del Toro’s noir-esque thriller, which is set in two vastly different worlds, moving from a Great Depression-era carnival to the upper echelons of metropolitan society. The first half came a bit easier, as he reveals, “I had an amazing book that I bought in the late eighties that was 1939 menswear three volume set,” which helped him tackle Stanton Carlisle’s (Bradley Cooper) suits and black tie wear.

The first half came a bit easier, as he reveals, “I had an amazing book that I bought in the late eighties that was 1939 menswear three volume set,” which helped him tackle Stanton Carlisle’s (Bradley Cooper) suits and black tie wear.

With the announcement on Feb. 1 of the contenders for the Artios Awards, which are bestowed by the Casting Society of America, we’ve now heard from all 13 guilds. The CSA was the only group to hold off till the end of Oscar nominations voting. The actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound editors, sound mixers, visual effects wizards and writers all weighed in on or before the start of balloting on Jan. 27.
“Dune” had racked up a perfect score by reaping nominations with each of the first dozen guilds but was snubbed by the CSA.”West Side Story” is next with 10, missing out for film editing and lensing. The stylish “No Time to Die” has eight.

When costume designer Louis Sequeira got the call from Guillermo del Toro to start working on “Nightmare Alley,” he didn’t have to go far to begin researching the 1930s set project. A self-described hoarder, he’d been collecting visual references for decades.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2022 Oscars reaped bids on January 26 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Cruella,” “House of Gucci” and “West Side Story” contend here in the period picture category against “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley,” which rank sixth and seventh in our Oscar odds.
Another likely Oscar contender, “Dune,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “The Green Knight,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “The Suicide Squad.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “Spencer,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.”

The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including last year’s winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 72 Best Picture champs also won this award. Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley”
Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” is physically stunning, which the director says “sustains the darkness of the movie by keeping the audience almost hypnotized by those textures. If you make a beautiful movie that’s not telling a story or defining a character, it’s just decorative. That’s the difference between eye protein and eye candy.”
Every worker behind the camera on the Searchlight film was “first-rate,” says del Toro, who also singled out several key artisans. “We basically made two films,” he adds. “The carnival is full of steam, rain, mud and reds; the second half is sterile and cold, in the snow, full of metal, glass and straight lines.”

Guillermo del Toro’s visually striking “Nightmare Alley” straddles two worlds, the grit and grime of a post-World War II carnival that has suffered wear and tear traveling from city to city, before jumping a few years ahead to a lush and sleek world.
Connecting the two is Bradley Cooper’s Stanton Carlisle, a down on his luck guy who uses the carnival as his ticket out. As Stanton plots a new con, he encounters Cate Blanchett’s Dr. Lilith Ritter, a mysterious psychiatrist, in whom he might have met his match.
Renowned for his lavish world-building, del Toro called on production designer Tamara Deverell to build the look of the film. Deverell has yet to land an Adg or Academy Award nomination, but things could change for her as she gains praise for her work. Deverell says she and del Toro didn’t talk about film noir, but rather...

The 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations announced on December 13 are topped by “Belfast” and “West Side Story” with a leading 11 bids each, followed closely by both “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” at 10. “Licorice Pizza” and “Nightmare Alley” earned eight nominations apiece while both “King Richard” and “Don’t Look Up” picked up six. All of them number Best Picture bids among their haul. That race is rounded out by four-time nominee “Coda” and two-time contender “tick, tick…Boom!” (See the full 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations list below.)

Past Oscar nominees and winners dominate this category and it’s a case of the futuristic science-fiction looks of “Dune,” created by Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan, versus Jacqueline Durran in “Spencer” as the two front-runners in the costume design race.
Denis Villeneuve’s epic needed an army of artisans to craft the looks of Arrakis and the different worlds — a mighty task in itself. West and Morgan also had to bring to life the stillsuits, described by author Frank Herbert as “the color of the rocks.”
“Each one had to be cut on a mold of the actors’ bodies because the movement of the body is what theoretically activates the stillsuit and turns it into a distillery,” West says.
Both in the book and film, the suits take human wastewater and turn it into a gas, “and then that filters through all of the tubing in the suit as...
