What do wizards, blancmange and cat killers have in common? They’re all subjects of songs by Melin Melyn, of course.

It’s not a term they’re particularly comfortable with. “There have been times where people have said this is a revival, like we’re doing something unique,” frontman Gruff Glyn says. “But we’re not doing anything, by singing in Welsh, that hasn’t been done before, and it will be done for many more centuries to come.”
Melin Melyn’s music is a hearty cawl (Welsh broth) of surfer psych-pop, folk, and the kind of surrealist comedy you’d typically find in The Mighty Boosh or The League of Gentlemen. They went down a treat at Green Man festival this summer, where they were joined...

It’s seven years since then-Fox chief Kevin Reilly declared “Rip pilot season”.
Today, NBC chiefs Susan Rovner and Frances Berwick were the latest top broadcast executives to declare the traditional cycle dead with the network looking to replace it with a “52-week scheduling mindset”.
Rovner, who is Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, speaking at the unveiling of its fall schedule, said that the Covid-19 pandemic has ignited this change.
“The unique circumstances of this year have made us relook at how we approach the traditional broadcast pilot season and I really think it’s going to benefit all of us. Rather than competing each year with other networks for the best directors, best actors and best writing staff all in the same small window, we’re now going to be able to take the time to make the best show, period,” she said.

The Emmy Awards ballot lists 213 episodes (from 118 series), so there will be seven nominees this year under the new rules. There were seven for the first time in the category’s history last year:
“Barry” season 2: “ronny/lily” (Alec Berg & Bill Hader) Winner — “Fleabag” season 2: “Episode 1” (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) “The Good Place” season 3 — “Janet(s)” (Josh Siegal & Dylan Morgan) “PEN15” season 1: “Anna Ishii-Peters” (Maya Erskine & Anna Konkle & Stacy Osei-Kuffour) “Russian Doll” season 1: “Nothing in This World is Easy” (Natasha Lyonne) “Russian Doll” season 1: “A Warm Body” (Allison Silverman) “Veep” season 7: “Veep” (David Mandel)
Only “The Good Place” returns to defend its slot. “Better Things,” “Ramy” and “Sex Education” are among those hoping to capitalize on the open field after being snubbed last year. “The Good Place” contends for its series finale, as do “Schitt’s Creek” and “Silicon Valley.” “Schitt’s Creek” seeks its first nomination in...

NBC has made the decision to stagger production on the 12 pilots it currently has in the works due to coronavirus disruptions.
The network still plans to shoot multiple pilots, including that for drama “Langdon” which centers around the character made famous by from Dan Brown’s novels and Tom Hanks, later this year once they can safely return to production.
However, five pilots, namely “At That Age” from Carla Banks-Waddles, “Echo” from JJ Bailey, Rachele Lynn and Seth Meyers’ “Craazy For You,” Jim Jefferies’ self-titled comedy, and “Someone Out There” fromo “30 Rock” trio Matt Hubbard, Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan, have been pushed to next year’s development cycle.
News of the pilot production plan comes less than a week after the network unveiled an optimistic fall schedule, featuring the return of its biggest series “This Is Us,” and the premiere of “Law & Order: Organized Crime” with Christopher Meloni...

Parting is such sweet sorrow, and that’s never more evident than at the Emmys. In recent years we’ve seen several shows honored with writing or directing wins for their emotional series finales, including “The Larry Sanders Show” (comedy writing & directing in 1998), “30 Rock” (comedy writing in 2013), “The Sopranos” (drama writing in 2007), “The Americans” (drama writing in 2018), “ER” (drama directing in 2009) and “Friday Night Lights” (drama directing in 2011). Might that signal some forking good news for once for NBC’s dearly departed “The Good Place”?
The well-received series finale, “Whenever You’re Ready,” aired January 30 and was written and directed by creator Michael Schur. In the two-part episode, our favorite humans — Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) — live out their final days in the afterlife as they all eventually find their own peace. It must be a pretty funny day at NBC.
After ordering two comedy pilots this morning, the network has commissioned three more, all from a cluster of creatives who have previous experience on some of the Peacock’s biggest comedies.
The first pilot is a single-camera comedy titled “Crazy For You,” which has “Saturday Night Live” producer and “Silicon Valley” writer Rachele Lynn in place to write and co-executive produce. The Universal Television, Broadway Video and Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions project counts Seth Meyers, Lorne Michaels and Mike Shoemaker among its EPs.
“Crazy For You” revolves around Daisy who, with her life stalling, re-enters the dating scene only to discover that while she was out of the game, the game sort of, totally, completely changed. Realizing she is a bit rusty at being “normal” and “appealing” on first dates, she’ll need the support of her friends as she strives to...

The 71st Emmy Awards are in the books, with Amazon’s “Fleabag” knocking off perennial winner “Veep” to become TV’s top comedy — among Television Academy voters, at least. “Game of Thrones” didn’t let the same happen in drama.
Amazon’s Prime Video started the night off on a real hot streak, winning the first four awards of the evening — two apiece for “Fleabag” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — and five out of the initial six.
All told, HBO won nine trophies tonight, Amazon claimed seven, and Netflix took home four. See all of Sunday’s winners and nominees below.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Sunday, September 22 and will air live coast-to-coast on Fox. The network has opted to follow the lead of the Oscars and go without a host. That should speed up the proceedings. Over the course of a jam-packed three hours, 27 awards will be handed out.
While that is three more awards than either the Oscars or Tonys, it represents only about a fifth of the 123 categories at the Emmys. The bulk of these — 96 in all — were bestowed at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies on the weekend of September 14 and 15.
Last year’s big Emmy winners were HBO’s “Game of Thrones” for Best Drama Series and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. MaiseL” for Best Comedy Series. Will both shows repeat this year? “Game of Thrones,” which signed off earlier this year, is predicted to win the top trophy on the drama side for a fourth time.

In a world filled with elections, social movements and national tragedies, how open should the doors of a writers’ room actually be? For some of this year’s Emmy-nominated shows, those doors are wide open.

How do you take the most complicated episode of one of the most intricate and celebrated network sitcoms in recent history and boil it down into a story simple enough that even a child can keep up?
Very carefully.
That was the challenge Dylan Morgan and Josh Siegal faced as they went to work on “Janet(s),” the tenth episode of the third season of NBC’s “The Good Place,” in which the pair needed to navigate an inter-dimensional void, explain the universe’s accounting department, save the show’s central couple, and do it all in 23 minutes or less. For their efforts, Morgan and Siegal earned an Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series Emmy nomination and the distinction of crafting one of the most memorable episodes of the 2018-19 television season.

When the 2019 Emmy Awards nominations were announced two weeks ago, the only thing unconfirmed were the producers. Television Academy officials have now unveiled a new list of nominee names for Comedy Series, Drama Series, TV Movie, Limited Series and more. The annual delay is caused by a need for vetting the submissions to determine the official producer names that are now nominated.
Performers nominated as producers for comedy include Bill Hader, Daniel Levy, Eugene Levy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Drama stars as producer nominees are Jason Bateman, Will Ferrell, Bob Odenkirk, Sandra Oh and Waller-Bridge. Top name Limited Series producers include Amy Adams, Robert De Niro, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sam Rockwell, Ben Stiller, Michelle Williams and Oprah Winfrey. Performers nominated in the TV Movie category are Peter Dinklage, Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant.

The best episode of the third season of “The Good Place” — and this is not up for debate — is “Janet(s),” the 10th installment that also served as the fall finale in December. That, of course, was the multiple Janets episode, in which D’Arcy Carden was tasked with playing all four humans after they enter Janet’s void, along with a new version of Janet, the deadpan Neutral Janet. It was a tremendous showcase for Carden’s skill and versatility — and would obviously be her submission if she makes the Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy cut — but she definitely should not be the only person recognized for the episode.
The entire gamble works not just because of Carden’s stunning ability to mimic her co-stars, but because of the writing. Penned by Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan, “Janet(s)” used the neat party trick of multiple Janets as the...

In order to protect her human friends from the demons chasing them, Janet (D’Arcy Carden) brings them into her void, where they all appear as versions of her in the aptly titled “Janet(s)” episode of the third season of NBC’s afterlife comedy “The Good Place.” The episode is technically complex because Carden had to be composited over and over as versions of herself, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani and Jason in the scenes. But things become even more complicated as Eleanor begins to lose sense of herself while trying to have a heart-to-heart with Chidi, glitching into a couple dozen different individuals and eventually causing the void itself to break apart before he stops her spiral by kissing her.

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?
Seepga Awards predictions: ‘A Star Is Born’ will be reborn with a Best Picture win

A review of “Janet(s),” this week’s episode of The Good Place, coming up just as soon as your amusement has been scheduled…
Well, what do you know? The Good Place returns to the afterlife full-time and turns out one of its best episodes in a long time. Funny how that works.
Our interlude on Earth wasn’t without its moments, particularly in the episode prior to this. But there was always a sense of the series working with its dominant hand tied behind its back. Turns out its...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Good Place” Season 3, Episode 10, “Janet(s).”]
“The Good Place” creator Mike Schur describes Thursday’s episode, in which D’Arcy Carden plays multiple versions of her character Janet, as “a form of psychological torture.” In a desperate move to save the lives of demon Michael (Ted Danson) and their human friends Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), and Jason (Manny Jacinto), Janet whisks them into her boundless Void. Michael arrives unscathed, but the mortals aren’t so lucky: Each of them look exactly like Janet.
“The reason to do this isn’t to have D’Arcy run around and goof off as her castmates,” said Schur after a screening of the episode. “[Eleanor is] literally asking herself, ‘Who am I? What version of me am I right now?’ and so is [Chidi]. This is something philosophers talk about.”

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

Plenty of groups give out awards for excellence in film and television at the end of every year, but no set of nominations is watched more carefully by Oscar predictors than the picks from the Producers Guild. That’s because year after year their choices end up being a fairly good indicator of which films will also be granted Best Picture nominations when the Academy makes their selections.
The Guild has announced their 2014 nominations today and there aren’t really any major surprises here. All the expected films are present, including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Animated films that nabbed nominations are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Frozen and Monsters University. Included in the documentary nominations are A Place at the Table, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, Life According to Sam, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks...
