Terence Winter, who stepped down as showrunner of the Sylvester Stallone-starring mob drama Tulsa King after its first season, is back as a writer on Paramount+ series’ upcoming second season in addition to his continuing duties as an executive producer. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan, has opted not to bring in a replacement for Winter in line with the practice at the other Sheridan series produced by 101 Studios which don’t have a traditional showrunner. Instead, Tulsa King has hired a director/executive producer whose deal is still being finalized.
As Deadline reported a year ago, Winter stepped down from the showrunner post over creative differences with Sheridan. Winter, who had spoken about how much he enjoyed working with Stallone and loved the characters on the show, was to remain an executive producer on Tulsa King while focusing on other projects.

I was both excited and worried for Bob Marley: One Love, a biopic about one of the most emblematic figures in Jamaica’s history, who deeply impacted its cultural and political landscape by becoming a pioneer of the reggae music genre and, ultimately, a global icon. Reinaldo Marcus Green being announced as the director instantly caught my attention since, after all, he’s the filmmaker responsible for one of my favorite biopics of the century, King Richard. However, the involvement of multiple screenwriters – Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), Frank E. Flowers (Shooting Stars), Zach Baylin (Gran Turismo), and Green himself – as well as Marley’s family production company, raised concerns about potential biases and a lack of critical depth.

When movies come out, we grade them with reviews, define them by box office returns or eyeballs on streaming services, and maybe trophies down the line. But every successful, ambitious film starts with a dream, followed by compromise and adversity. Here begins Deadline’s occasional peek into the creative aspirations, and the sweat and blood that propels ambitious films.

The legendary Jamaican is portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir, as Marley is shown at the story’s beginning in 1976, at the point right before one of his biggest political concerts. The film then follows his life thereafter through the downfalls of fame, his most fertile chart topping period and his eventual early death at age 36, while showing flashbacks to other points of his life … expanding on his Rastafarian One Love philosophy and the flaws in his all-to-human nature.

The latest narrative film about a musician – Bob Marley: One Love – ultimately plays out more as a celebration of Bob Marley than as a “warts-and-all” biography; and that is to the film’s benefit.
Whereas the film could have become burdened by monotonously moving through Marley’s life from one pivotal moment to the next, it instead bounces around the singer’s story in a whimsical, often spiritual way that enables his saga to take on a more grandiose aura than might have been expected otherwise.
Bob Marley: One Love begins with Marley and his band prepping for a free concert in Jamaica. However, when threats of violence against the singer should he perform put his health and well-being at risk, the actual performance is cut short, and the rest of the film begins to play out. What follows is an inspiring story of the singer’s triumph over numerous...

Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love focuses primarily on Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) life between 1976 and 1978, during which time the reggae legend fled Jamaica for London and his homeland was plagued by rampant violence and political upheaval. One might think that this limited scope would allow the filmmakers to explore this era of Marley’s life with some measure of specificity, whether in the challenges his marriage faced as his wife, Rita (Lashana Lynch), spent much of this time in America and Jamaica, or how the fractured state of his homeland and his love for its people informed his landmark 1977 album, Exodus. But Green’s shaggy, disjointed film is less interested in the complexities of Marley’s personal or professional life than it is in presenting him as a hero and an inspiration.

London-born actor Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as reggae superstar Bob Marley in this perfectly serviceable biopic from King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin and from a story by Winter and Flowers, Bob Marley: One Life charts the life of the Jamaican singer from his rise to fame to his untimely death at the age of 36.
Bob Marley: One Love portrays the tumultuous political and social landscape of Jamaica following its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. Amidst escalating tensions between rival gangs, Marley finds himself thrust into the midst of national turmoil. When he is approached to participate in a peace concert aimed at uniting the people, Marley realises that his involvement in politics could jeopardise not only his career but also his life.

Over the last decade or two, we’ve seen the Hollywood biographical drama — once the cheesiest of genres, though often an irresistible one — mature as a popular art form. The key evolution, dating back to films like “Capote” and “Lincoln” (and extending through “Oppenheimer”), was the decision to ditch the old cradle-to-grave sprawl in favor of focusing on a crucial time period of someone’s life — a strategy that allows for more texture and truth.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” a drama about the most larger-than-life of all reggae superstars, ardently follows the new biopic rules. The film opens in 1976, when Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir), lean and majestic in his bouncing dreadlocks, heading toward the height of his fame, is getting ready to play a peace concert in Kingston. His goal is to heal the violent factionalism of Jamaican politics. It’s an uphill battle. The Jamaica we see is a...

In the years since his premature death, reggae legend Bob Marley has been culturally defanged into a benevolent good-times symbol safe for dorm rooms and yuppie living rooms everywhere. Marley’s string of popular songs, many of which were compiled in his posthumous greatest hits collection “Legend,” turned him into one of the best-selling artists in the world, but this mass-market commercial appeal also necessitated a dilution of his radicalism and spiritual essence. Though many can probably identify “Jamming” or “Is This Love?” as a Marley tune if it was played for them, he’s still probably associated more with generic weed culture than any type of revolution, which is an obvious shame given the political roots of reggae and Jamaica’s storied history.

During a 1979 interview with Bob Marley, New Zealand journalist Dylan Taite asked the musician about his early exposure to different genres. Taite wanted to know if Marley had dabbled in rock or soul before settling on reggae. Marley rubbed his chin and fixed his gaze off camera as he considered the question. “I wasn’t really into dem tings,” he said, “I was really into spiritual music, you know, cause it get more revolutionized.” For Marley, music was a transcendent experience with political potential.
Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love tends unevenly to this idea. The film builds a portrait of Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) around the creation of the Jamaican star and his band’s ninth studio album. Exodus was released in 1977 — two years before Bob Marley and the Wailers performed in New Zealand for the first time, and a year after an attempted assassination on the musician’s life.

Peaky Blinders actor Kingsley Ben-Adir dons dreadlocks and speaks in a Jamaican patois to play a reggae legend in the latest trailer for Bob Marley: One Love, which dropped Tuesday.
The biopic has Marley overcoming adversity, including a failed assassination attempt, to rise to musical fame with a message of love and unity in dangerous times. “There’s a war going on. How I can bring peace? I can’t even get peace for myself,” a fretting Marley says at one point in the trailer.
The movie, based on real events, recounts a failed attempt to murder Marley in his home in Kingston, Jamaica, which only drove the reggae legend to double down on his mission to unify a divided nation with revolutionary music.

Kingsley Ben-Adir embodies Bob Marley while carrying the burden of being a revolutionary musician in the new trailer for Reinaldo Marcus Green’s upcoming biopic Bob Marley: One Love. Watch it below.
At one point in the trailer, Ben-Adir shares his frustrations with Lashana Lynch, who plays Marley’s wife, Rita. “There’s a war going on. How I can bring peace? I can’t even get peace for myself,” he says. In response, she offers sage advice: “Sometimes the messenger has to become the message.”

If you've been catching up on end-of-year releases in theaters, chances are you've caught the trailer for "Bob Marley: One Love," the upcoming biopic from director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as Marley, the first actor to ever play the Jamaican musical legend, activism hero, and Rastafari icon in a feature film. Back in April, /Film's Ben Pearson attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas where he was given an exclusive first look at the film, which was produced by Marley's children and surviving family members, including his wife Rita Marley. As such, it was vital to the family that they had a say in who would play the titular figure.
Ahead of the film's release, Rotten Tomatoes released a featurette where Ziggy Marley discussed why Ben-Adir was the perfect actor for the role. "Kingsley does a great job in an artful way, not trying to mimic my father," he said.

Paramount Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for “Bob Marley: One Love,” its upcoming biopic about the Jamaican singer and songwriter that’s expected to be released in 2024.
The trailer starts as a celebration of Marley and his legacy, as portrayed by “Peaky Blinders” and “The Oa” star Kingsley Ben-Adir. It jumps between Marley playing to concert after concert of adoring fans as the legendary artist’s music plays in the background. As the trailer continues it takes on a darker tone as it delves into Jamaica’s civil war during the 1970s.
It all comes to a head right before the One Love Peace Concert. As someone off screen asks Marley why he’s going to return to Jamaica after there was an assassination attempt on him and his wife, Ben-Adir as Marley calmly replies, “My life is not important to me. My life is for people.”

Practically since his career began, LeBron James has been not merely a great basketball player but a media industry generating a seemingly endless array of products.
The latest example is this new Peacock original film based on his 2009 memoir co-written with Buzz Bissinger (Friday Night Lights), recounting the story of his early years and friendship with his high school teammates known as the “Fab Four,” later expanded to become the “Fab Five.” The story was already told in the 2008 documentary More Than a Game, but that won’t stop the Goat’s fans from wanting to see this lovingly rendered adaptation that covers all the early career highlights, albeit sometimes in sanitized form.
The story begins with James (Marquis “Mookie” Cook, a top-ranked amateur basketball player making an impressive screen debut) playing in a youth league in Akron, Ohio, along with his three best friends: Lil Dru (Caleb McLaughlin, Stranger...

Exclusive: Netflix won a hotly contested auction for The Bluff, a pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for Zoe Saldana, with Frank E. Flowers directing. Joe Ballarini will write the script with Flowers. Several streamers chased this one and the upfront commitment for those scribes is seven figures.
Project is about pirates in the Caribbean, but this is no family film. The drama is set in the Cayman Islands in the 1800s and Saldana plays Ercell, a Caribbean woman whose secret past is revealed when her island is invaded by vicious buccaneers. The intention is to blend visceral action and historical fiction to create a real action vehicle as the heroine fights against the atrocities committed by the pirates. There are strong roles for a second woman who is part of the vigilante campaign, and the nasty lead pirate. Saldana and Flowers previously teamed in the 2004 drama Haven.

It’s important to know these facts when approaching Sean Ellis’ Metro Manila, because the city plays such a large role in determining the destiny of its characters.
