Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City brought some mega-wattage to the Cannes Film Festival this evening, lighting up the Palais with what we clocked as a 6.5 minute standing ovation for the star-studded comedy.
Alongside the filmmaker were cast members Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Carell, Hope Davis, Rupert Friend, Rita Wilson, Maya Hawke, Fisher Stevens and even more…
Surrounded, and embraced, by his cast, Anderson said, “I’m so pleased to show the movie for the first time… This is absolutely the perfect room the perfect people to show it to; we’re so happy to be here. And thank you to our cast of stupendous actors playing actors.”
Playing in competition, Anderson’s latest is set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955 where the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention organized to bring together students and parents from across the country...

Wes Anderson’s latest film is almost ready to blast off.
Focus Features, in partnership with Indian Paintbrush, has set a limited theatrical release for “Asteroid City” on June 16, 2023. The film will go wide a week later on June 23. The out-of-this-world premise for Anderson’s “Asteroid City” was recently revealed, with Focus Features handling the distribution for the dramedy.
This marks the first collaboration between Focus and Anderson since Oscar-nominated 2012 coming of age story “Moonrise Kingdom.” His films since — “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Isle of Dogs,” and last year’s “The French Dispatch” — were all distributed by Searchlight. Universal Pictures, the parent company of Focus Features, will handle the international distribution for “Asteroid City.”
“We are beyond thrilled to be the global home for ‘Asteroid City,’ bringing Focus back in business with Wes and his producing partners,” Peter Kujawski, the chairman of Focus Features, said. “Wes is a generational talent...

Focus Features has partnered with Indian Paintbrush and acquired the worldwide rights to “Asteroid City,” the next film from director Wes Anderson, and the distributor has also unveiled the film’s full cast and official synopsis.
“Asteroid City” is a reunion between Anderson, Focus and his company Indian Paintbrush, as Focus last distributed “Moonrise Kingdom” way back in 2012. Universal International along with Focus will handle worldwide distribution on the film. No release date has been set.
“Asteroid City” is a poetic meditation on the meaning of life. It tells the story of a fictional American desert town circa 1955 and its Junior Stargazer convention, which brings together students and parents from across the country for scholarly competition, rest/recreation, comedy, drama, romance and more. The film is based on a story by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola.

During a competitive period when well-reviewed wide releases like “Dunkirk” and “Baby Driver” are luring adult audiences away from new smart-house fare, Weinstein stormed back at the specialty box office with Taylor Sheridan’s Wyoming western “Wind River,” which boasted one of the best limited openings of the year. A strong debut will help it stand out in the weeks ahead as the flow of new films declines.
Fox Searchlight welcomed a decent initial response for its heart-tugging inner-city dance documentary “Step” in seven cities. Also impressive is the two-theater launch for “Columbus,” starring Jon Cho as a Korean translator spending time in middle America due to a family emergency.

“Dunkirk” and “Girls Trip” held well their second weekends, taking first and third place in the top 10, but the full list totaled $138 million — down 29 percent from the same weekend last year. And while a second weekend at #1 is great news for Christopher Nolan’s war film, at $28 million it’s the lowest #1 of the summer — and below any #1 for last summer as well.
The top spot was there for the taking for “The Emoji Movie,” Sony Animation’s latest offering (at $50 million in budget, economical). But with audiences reacting like critics (its 10 Metacritic score near record bad), the attempt to bring phone emojis to life did have one rare achievement for a new animated film: It fell Saturday from Friday, down 14 percent.

Not since Wonder Woman seven weeks ago has a film repeat atop the weekend box office. This weekend, Dunkirk is looking to do just that. Christopher Nolan's war drama faces incoming challenges in the form of Sony's animated feature The Emoji Movie and Focus's actioner Atomic Blonde starring Charlize Theron. Both Sony and Focus are anticipating openings around $20 million for their new releases, which wouldn't likely be enough to top Dunkirk's sophomore session, though both could over perform against those expectations making this a weekend to watch closely. Both the new releases and holdovers alike could provide some fireworks, including Universal's Girls Trip, which returns to the fray following its $31 million opening weekend and "A+" CinemaScore. After debuting with $50.5 million last weekend, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk delivered a #1 opening and is hoping to do the same this weekend. In 2014, following a $47.5 million debut, Nolan's own Interstellar dropped...

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Working Title producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, whose latest hit is Edgar Wright’s wheel-and-disc-spinning breakout “Baby Driver” (June 28, Sony), which has tracked $64 million worldwide to date.
Bottom Line: This brainy duo with plummy British accents have been turning out a consistent slate of smart global hits since the ’80s. The London-based co-chairmen of Working Title boast the best taste in the business. They chase mainstream quality fare. That’s their gig. But even so over the years, partnering with Universal Pictures, with freedom to greenlight movies up to $35 million, their films have grossed an impressive almost $7 billion dollars worldwide.
Career Peaks: From the start, Working Title founder Tim Bevan gravitated to local stories with global potential like “My Beautiful Laundrette,” Stephen Frears’ searing...

Opening to $117 million, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is the second biggest opener of the summer (behind “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” $146.5 million) and third best for the year (overall gross champion “Beauty and the Beast” tops with $174 million). It’s a terrific reboot for Marvel with Sony.
However, it probably won’t be enough to make “Spider-Man” the movie of the summer. With another very strong weekend for “Wonder Woman,” Patty Jenkins’ D.C. Comics film — which had only the third best opening weekend — is the most likely the biggest summer 2017 hit in domestic grosses.
In its sixth weekend, “Wonder Woman” placed fourth with another $10 million, bringing its total so far to just under $369 million. To hold that well when a rival comic book movie debuts is a feat in its own right.
Until recently, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” appeared likely to easily top the “Wonder Woman” total. Now through its sixth weekend,...

Saturday Am Update: With an estimated $51.2 million on Friday, Sony's release of Spider-Man: Homecoming is looking at a three-day weekend around $120-125 million. Without adjusting for inflation that would be the second highest opening for a Spider-Man film and around $30 million more than the $91.6 million brought in by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. It would also be just behind the $128.1 million Iron Man 2 opened with in 2010 as Spidey is settling in nicely within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Get More: Track how Spider-Man: Homecoming compares to the two other Summer 2017 superhero features, Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Additionally, while Focus's The Beguiled is performing a bit behind our expectations, looking at an $2 million weekend, Amazon and Lionsgate's The Big Sick is looking to over perform after delivering an estimated $1.1 million on Friday, heading toward a weekend...

“Despicable Me 3” (Universal) at $75.4 million provided close to half of the Top Ten total of $161 million. That’s an impressive achievement. But the the latest Illumination animated offering came in considerably below the expected total of $90 million. And yet again the domestic total is out of step with strong international results.
On the other hand, Edgar Wright’s second-ranked “Baby Driver” (Sony) performed better than expected ($21 million for the weekend, $30 million since its Wednesday opening). Chalk up its initial success to comedy counterprogramming, strong reviews, and perhaps more than anything a desire for something different and not the safe, cookie-cutter formula core of most summer franchise releases.
For example, “The House” (Warner Bros.), a standard-issue Will Farrell/Amy Poehler studio comedy, ranked sixth with a tepid $9 million gross. It’s another mid-level flop.
“The Beguiled” (Focus) entered the Top Ten in still limited play, with “The Big Sick” (Lionsgate...

Once again sequel fatigue appears to be having an impact as estimates have Despicable Me 3 coming in about $10 million shy of the opening weekend for Despicable Me 2 after a larger than anticipated dip on Saturday. That said, the film easily secured the weekend top spot in the domestic, international and worldwide marketplaces, leading the charge over the first three days of this long, five-day Fourth of July holiday weekend. Behind it, Sony's Baby Driver out-performed the studio's expectations while WB's R-rated comedy The House failed to generate much heat. At the top of the box office Universal and Illumination's Despicable Me 3 brought in an estimated $75.4 million, which is $8 million shy of the three-day estimate the studio was anticipating just yesterday morning. In fact, the film, which opened in a record, 4,529 theaters, is currently pacing about $10 million behind studio's pre-weekend expectations. That said, audiences appear to have enjoyed the film,...

Edgar Wright was, by his own account, "21 years old, living in North London, broke and on the dole – that's British for 'welfare'" in 1995 when he was struck by what he can only compare to a near-religious vision. The filmmaker was in the process of editing his first movie, a low-budget Spaghetti western homage, but the future director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had nothing lined up and no sense of what he really wanted to do with his life. And then he put on "Bellbottoms," the first...

Paramount's Transformers: The Last Knight took the #1 spot this weekend as expected, but that opening was the lowest the franchise has seen thus far by a rather significant margin as a lot of attention will now turn toward the film's international run. Meanwhile, WB's Wonder Woman is still tearing up the box office as it has now become the highest grossing release within the DC Extended Universe and it is showing little sign of stopping. Only one of the previous four Transformers features opened on a Wednesday and that was 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third feature in the now five-film franchise, and it debuted with $162.6 million over its first five days in release, $97.8 million of that from the three-day weekend. By contrast, Transformers: The Last Knight brought in a mere $69.1 million over its first five days in release, an estimated $45.3 million of which over the three-day weekend.

The Guardians of the Galaxy films are famous for incorporating classic tracks into the films' scenes and narrative -- nothing beats watching Kurt Russell talk his way through 'Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)' by Looking Glass. James Gunn is not the only director who very carefully considers every track, writes to the music he has picked, and seamlessly weaves it into his films. Edgar Wright has been obsessed with his musical choices since his TV show Spaced, with the following soundtracks for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World all including some pretty deep cuts that make for fine listening, long after you've seen the film.
Baby Driver is Wright's next film, and the latest trailer not only included 'Tequila' by The Champs, but was also titled "Official TeKillYah Trailer" to put further emphasis on the music. The trailer also sports...

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.
The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

The first weekend of March is poised to be another slow one at the domestic box office. Chappie should lead the way, though it will likely fall short of $20 million. Meanwhile, R-rated comedy Unfinished Business will almost certainly open below $10 million, which will make this the latest flop for star Vince Vaughn.Playing at 3,201 locations, Chappie marks the third feature from South African director Neill Blomkamp, who burst on to the scene in a big way with his 2009 debut District 9. Lacking any recognizable faces, District 9 was sold entirely on its unique, impressively-rendered sci-fi world. That strategy worked quite well, and the movie went on to earn $115.6 million at the domestic box office. It was also a hit with critics, and surprisingly scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The District 9 connection has been a big part of the Chappie marketing campaign, with recent commercials going as...

Tonight, the seventh and (at least for now) final series of E4′s seminal teen drama Skins begins. Over its six years on the air, it’s had both high points and low points but its impact on a previously rather lame genre filled with teenage characters played by actors in their mid to late twenties is undeniable. It was touted as being full of drug-fuelled raves and rampant sex (which it is) but the viewers were won over by the quality of the writing and how relatable the characters and stories were rather than how good the sex scenes were.
A sad truth of life is that (apart from Bruce Forsyth) all things must come to an end and the time has come for Skins to leave our screens. But not before it gets a proper swansong in the form of three two-part stories: Skins: Fire, Skins: Rise,...
