Having it’s World Premiere at SXSW on March 14 was Alex Garland’s Civil War.
The Hollywood Reporter says, “The audience reaction to the film has been very effusive, with viewers calling it a riveting, disturbing, masterful piece of filmmaking (read the audience and critic first reactions).”
The consensus of many of the reviews out of the film festival in Austin say the film is brilliant:
“With the precision and length of its violent battle sequences, it’s clear Civil War operates as a clarion call. Garland wrote the film in 2020 as he watched cogs on America’s self-mythologizing exceptionalist machine turn, propelling the nation into a nightmare. With this latest film, he sounds the alarm, wondering less about how a country walks blindly into its own destruction and more about what happens when it does,” says Lovia Gyarkye in her review over at The Hollywood Reporter.

Directed by Doug Liman, Road House is an upcoming action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Daniel Melchior, J.D. Pardo, and more. The movie is a re-imagination of the 1989 movie of the same name and had its world premiere at SXSW on March 8th, 2023. According to reports, the reviews have been positive from the critics and the audience with an impressive score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie’s director wrote an editorial piece criticizing Amazon for bypassing a theatrical release of the movie. R. Lance Hill, the original screenwriter of the 1989 movie, decided to sue MGM and Amazon, allegedly stating the copyright infringement and noted that the studios used AI-generative voice tools to complete the movie during strikes. But upon its premiere, critics have expressed that the performances in the movie are commendable and pay homage to the ’80s cult classic.

The world has anxiously been awaiting the release of Tom Cruise’s latest series of death-defying stunts, and judging by the first reactions to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One… we’ve got a hell of an action film to look forward to. Although Dead Reckoning is the first part of a two-part story, it sounds as though it holds its own as a solid movie. I can’t wait to see this one on the big screen for myself. Tom Cruise rarely disappoints.
Check out the first reactions to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One below! We’ll keep this updated as more reactions come in from its premiere in Rome.
#MissionImpossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 is fantastic.
Dynamite, timely story. Excellent new characters. Huge variety of action and a final set piece that ranks top 2-3 all-time for the franchise.

The words “impressive” and “awesome” were common refrains from a group of entertainment reporters who were among the first to see the upcoming DC superhero movie “The Flash”.
Warner Bros. screened the film for the first time at CinemaCon Tuesday for theatre owners, exhibitors and reporters attending the annual trade show and industry conference.
Reviews are embargoed until a later date — the film, the studio said, is not completely finished — but viewers were able to post reactions on social media as soon as the credits rolled.
Brian Welk of Indiewire wrote that “it played very well,” pointing out that there were more than a few screams and gasps in the packed theatre.
Film critic Jordan Hoffman tweeted that it was, “far more madcap than I expected. Really nailed what reading a 5-issue crossover comic book is like. Tons of Ezra Miller being zany and time paradox stuff. Nerds will lose their minds at the ending.

It’s the age of the biopic, and many filmmakers are turning to classic rock artists as their subjects. It makes sense — their music has moved people for decades, and their lives are usually full of enough intrigue to fill at least one film. As news of the new Bob Dylan biopic continues to trickle out and we not-so-patiently await a Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac movie, here are six classic rock biopics to watch.

The 2014 film Love & Mercy stars Paul Dano and John Cusack as The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson. The film alternates between the 1960s, as Wilson works on the seminal Pet Sounds, and the 1980s, as he grapples with his mental health and begins a new relationship. Wilson himself said that upon watching the film, he was astonished by both portrayals of him, particularly Dano’s.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered on Friday at SXSW and the early reviews are praising the characters, creatures, action, and even humor. Notably, some of the reviews are even saying that Honor Among Thieves might not just be for fans of the roleplaying game, but has potential to crossover to even those who have never pulled an all-nighter in a dingy, Mountain Dew-soaked basement.
Check out some of the reactions below:

The Sundance Film Festival has often been called one of the world’s most important documentary marketplaces, with 39 of the past 65 Best Documentary Feature contenders (60) either beginning or continuing their road to the Oscars in Park City, Utah. Examples include “Summer of Soul,” “Flee,” “Writing With Fire,” “Honeyland,” “The Edge of Democracy,” “American Factory,” “Time,” “The Mole Agent,” “Crip Camp,” “Rbg,” “Of Fathers and Sons,” “Minding the Gap,” and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.”
Two of those–Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” and Netflix’s joint venture with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, “American Factory”–won the award. Four of this season’s nominees —“All That Breathes,” “Fire of Love,” “Navalny,” and “A House Made of Splinters”—played the festival in 2022. Climate change, human rights violations, competitive mariachi, and manned flight to Mars are only a few of the subjects addressed by this year’s eclectic non-fiction slate.

The first press reactions to Avatar: The Way of Water are in, and the response is largely gushing.
The long-long awaited sequel to director James Cameron’s fantasy epic is being called better than the 2009 original in both its story and its cutting-edge visual effects.
While some chided Cameron for the film’s length (it is more than three hours) or took issue with its myriad of characters and storylines, most seemed impressed — even overwhelmed — by the film’s underwater visuals.
Here is a sample of reactions now that the film’s social media embargo has lifted for journalists who saw screenings of the film, as well as from those attending Tuesday’s London premiere (full critic reviews will be posted Dec. 13):

As the Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to try to rehabilitate itself in the wake of a 2021 exposé that jeopardized the future of its Golden Globe Awards, another organization of entertainment journalists — this one without a multimillion-dollar TV deal, but with no shortage of star power at its events — is facing questions of its own. Richard Donner's 1978 film "Superman" remains, even at this late date, one of the best superhero films ever made (if not the best). Donner, with his glittering special effects, careful and deliberate storytelling style, and attention to Superman's do-gooder disposition, effectively captured the importance and enormity of a character who had, by 1978, leaked into the realm of Jungian archetypes. Multiple Superman movies have been made since, and few have approached the greatness of "Superman." As critic Scott Mantz once confided to this author, "Superman" is the Beatles of superhero cinema. At this very moment, you, dear reader, are likely humming John Williams' opening theme. "Dun Da-daah!"

Critics got their first look at “Jurassic World Dominion” on Monday night, and while official reviews are embargoed, there were apparently no dive-bombing pterodactyls to yoink the phones from their hands. Reactions went direct to Twitter, and it’s fair to say the response was mixed.
Scott “Movie” Mantz, often one of the more upbeat and rah-rah boosters of popcorn cinema, was unimpressed:
It pains me to say this, but I did Not like #JurassicWorldDominion — the story was convoluted & all over the place, and it didn’t feel special. There’s no magic or heart to it, and it doesn’t capture the awe-inspiring feeling of the original at all. Not sure who it’s even for. pic.twitter.com/WjhVJaY9Nv

Oscar co-host Wanda Sykes referred to the Oscars as an evening “where movie lovers unite and watch TV.” The joke was a sobering reminder that the Academy Awards are, above all else, a TV show. Producer Will Packer intended to create a spectacle but most of that effort was in vain. After a promising start, viewers were rewarded with one bad decision after another, resulting in a disappointing ceremony lifted only by the winners’ speeches.

Juried winners at this year’s festival include Jon-Sesrie Goff’s After Sherman as Best Documentary, and Shawkat Amin Korki’s The Exam (Ezmûn) winning the Jeffrey C. Barbakow Award for best international feature film.
Róise and Frank (Mo ghrá buan), directed by Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy, centers on Róise (Brid Ni Neachtain), a widow in mourning who befriends a dog who just might be her late husband reincarnated. The pic earlier this week screened at the Dublin Film Festival where it won the Best Ensemble award.
Overall, this year’s in-person festival attracted 200 films from 54 countries along with its usual A-list of panel galas celebrating the year’s best in film – a traditional stop on the awards circuit. This year included Q...

As the first worldwide screenings of the latest James Bond installment “No Time to Die” came to a close, journalists and critics took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Daniel Craig’s last outing as the famed secret agent.
Though social media reactions tend to be more positive than reviews, one thing was clear via film Twitter: “No Time to Die,” which was delayed for nearly two years due to creative changes and the Covid-19 pandemic, was well worth the wait.
Film critic Scott Mantz wrote that though he needed more time to process the film, it was certainly better than Bond films “Quantum of Solace” and “Spectre.” “It’s Daniel Craig’s most grounded and — dare I say it? — most intimate take on #JamesBond with a powerful, unexpected & very emotional payoff,” Mantz said. “Def worth the wait!”
