Mere minutes after some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and executives issued a letter condemning the terror attacks on Israel and the taking of hundreds of hostages, The WGA East has publicly joined the Guild’s West Coast leadership in deciding to stay silent on the murderous siege of the Jewish state two weeks ago.
Admitting this “will strike some of you as inadequate,” Wgae president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen and others in the leadership said officially the Guild would be saying nothing on the matter – as a point of policy. At the same time they did note calling out “the atrocities in Israel committed by Hamas on October 7 and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza” on their personal social media feeds.

Exclusive: The Writers Guild of America hasn’t said anything publicly about the savage attack on Israel by terrorists on October 7, and a number of irate showrunners and others will be discussing that silence Friday.
Almost a week after dozens of high-profile WGA members put out an open letter reprimanding guild leadership for “when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent,” guild members are getting together to say something more.
“The guild wants this to go away, but we aren’t going away — it is outrageous they’ve said nothing, absolutely outrageous,” one individual who plans on joining today’s virtual meeting told Deadline.
Chaired by American Soul creator Jonathan Prince, a Zoom meeting is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Pt today to discuss why the WGA has been silent about Hamas’ onslaught against the Jewish state, which has left more than 1,400 dead and thousands injured.

4th Update, Oct 16: Casey Wasserman is the latest Hollywood heavyweight to speak out in support of Israel.
“There is no justification for this,” the Wasserman chairman-ceo – and chairman of the L.A. 2028 committee – reportedly said at an International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai on Monday. “I unequivocally stand in solidarity with Israel, but let me be clear I also stand with the innocent civilians in Gaza who did not choose this war.”
Referencing the terrorist kidnapping of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Games, Wasserman continued, “Unfortunately, the Olympics are not immune to the world we live in.
“At its worst, it is a platform for hate to express itself on the stage and we will always remember the 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team who were taken hostage and murdered in Munich.

As hundreds of thousands of Israeli troops mass on the border with Gaza for a near-certain ground invasion in response to murderous terrorist attacks that started last week, the striking SAG-AFTRA has planted its flag in the dire situation.
“SAG-AFTRA deplores and condemns the horrific acts of aggression against the Israeli people on Oct. 7,” bluntly said the 160,000-member strong guild Friday.
“The attack was a fundamental violation of human rights and dignity,” the guild added. “There is no justification for the murder and kidnapping of civilians. We mourn the loss of life and urge the safe return of those who are missing and held hostage.
“We stand united against hatred and violence and pray for peace.”

United Talent Agency, which had been on an acquisition spree nabbing multiple boutique firms, is undergoing a round of layoffs, the company said Wednesday. The cuts at the Jeremy Zimmer-led agency are said to be impacting a single digit percentage of a workforce that totals 2,000 employees.
“We’ve grown a great deal over the last several years, and as a result decided to make some adjustments,” a UTA spokesperson said. “We’re unfortunately parting ways with a small number of colleagues and are grateful for everything they’ve contributed.”
The agency had underwent layoffs in 2020, which saw a reduction in dozens of staffers, but has since embarked on an expansion. Last year marked a period of growth for the Beverly Hills-based agency, which closed a 125 million deal for strategic advisory firm MediaLink, bought U.K. literary and talent Agency Curtis Brown Group, snapped up data firm Mediahound and secured...

UTA has expanded its board of directors, adding Main Street Advisors CEO Paul Wachter and Nexus Management Group founder Ceci Kurzman as independent members.
Wachter is becoming board chairman, replacing Jim Berkus, who stepped down a couple of months ago. Even though Berkus is no longer chairing the board, he is expected to continue having an active role at the company he co-founded in 1991.
Wachter and Kurzman are joining 10 other board members, seven from within the company’s ranks and three representing its investors.
Via Main Street, Wachter has played a key role in the business dealings of LeBron James (off the basketball court) as well as Fenway Sports Group and Beats by Dre with Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. Kurzman, a former music label executive, started Nexus as an artist management company, but it has since become a platform for private investments in the consumer, media and technology sectors.

Johnny Depp’s longtime agent testified Thursday that his star power declined over the course of years due to his erratic behavior, and that at one point he asked his agency to give him 20 million because he needed money.

United Talent Agency on Tuesday said that Investcorp and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) are now strategic minority investors in the company.
UTA said the new influx of capital from Investcorp and PSP Investments will be used to accelerate its growth, enhance UTA’s existing services, and continue to invest in resources to support its clients and colleagues in a time of change and innovation in content creation and distribution.

Over the last five years, UTA has more than doubled in size and in the past year, the company has made acquisitions in live speaking, electronic music, and e-sports and gaming businesses, and has taken an equity stake in Core, recently renamed Industrial Media, which last year relaunched “American Idol.”

United Talent Agency’s founders (and partners) are taking off their suits tomorrow, rolling up their sleeves and doing the real work across this country and overseas. UTA will close all offices internationally Friday for its seventh annual Project Impact volunteer day to enable the agency’s 900 employees to dedicate their time and service at roughly 40 volunteer sites worldwide.
That means CEO Jeremy Zimmer, Co-Presidents Jay Sures and David Kramer as well as Chairman Jim Berkus and Board Members Tracey Jacobs, Matt Rice, Blair Kohan and Peter Benedek will all be volunteering, too. Cell phones off? Ummm … probably not, but it’s the life of an agent.
They are not the only ones, ICM Partners is doing the same tomorrow for offices on both coasts.

On April 30, under strings of fairy lights in the shadow of the phony Brooklyn in the New York Street backlot at Paramount Studios, at the start of the Paris Photo Los Angeles art fair, Hollywood muckety-mucks mixed with art-world types and assorted boldface names. There was Jim Berkus, the chairman of United Talent Agency, and the jolly Jeremy Zimmer, UTA’s CEO. There was David Hoberman, producer of David O. Russell’s The Fighter and the recent Muppets movie. And over there, Keegan-Michael Key from comedy duo Key & Peele settling into a conversation. It’s official: The Hollywoodification of the art world has begun. The interest is there on the movie-star end: Leonardo DiCaprio haunts Basel with his posse; Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Demi Moore, Judd Apatow, Jenji Kohan, and Jodie Foster go to Paris Photo; Jim Carrey’s a painter; and James Franco is a fully credentialed performance artist who showed at Pace Gallery.

Matt Rice has joined the board of directors at UTA, where he has been a partner since 2004. Rice is the seventh member of the board, a group that includes chairman Jim Berkus and CEO Jeremy Zimmer. Board members own larger stakes in the agency and decide on many of the most pressing matters. Rice joined UTA in 2002 from boutique literary firm Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann. ICM Partners later bought the firm. Rice represents several top TV actors, including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Craig Robinson. “Matt's contributions are everything we hope for from a partner and a board member,” the board.

While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. The only truly strange thing about these speeches is John Ridley and Steve McQueen failing...

4th Update: An eclectic mix of current and former moguls, executives, producers, directors, and of course actors attended the marquee pre-Oscar parties as well as famed artists, museum directors, fashion designers, music icons, and star athletes. Barry Diller’s luncheon for Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter Saturday was smaller than usual. That night, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ‘Night Before’ Oscar MPTF fundraiser avoided a union picket line. The agency parties dominated Thursday and Friday nights. CAA‘s was bigger than in past years when 200-300 guests crowded Bryan Lourd’s home. This time about 500 gathered at luxe Greystone Mansion for Old Hollywood glamour with men dressed ascots and women given gardenia corsages. WME‘s was held at Ari Emanuel’s home as usual and UTA‘s at Jim Berkus’ house again. ICM Partners‘ was held at the home of agent Hildy Gottlieb. Few of these names need introductions...

It’s too early to post my 2013 Hollywood Oscar party roundup. But unlike 2012 when fewer media, organizations, and swells were throwing bashes, this year almost has returned to normal. Barry Diller’s Oscar weekend mogul picnic on Saturday afternoon for Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter is back on after its 2012 hiatus. But my pal Dani Janssen’s after-the-Oscars party on Sunday night is cancelled again for the second straight year. There are still Oscar weekend’s agency parties — Hildy Gottlieb’s ICM party Thursday night, and then Jim Berkus’ UTA party and Ari Emanuel’s Wme fete and Bryan Lourd’s CAA bash Friday night. Harvey Weinstein’s doing it up big this year. So are the major studios with all their nominations. And there’s the fundraisers like Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ‘Night Before’ party for the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the blowout for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Hollywood’s 2012 Oscar Party Roundup Exclusive: If my roundup of Hollywood’s Oscar parties looks smaller than usual, it is. Fewer media, organizations, and swells are having parties over the next week. But two fetes in particular will be missed by their annual attendees: Barry Diller’s Oscar weekend mogul picnic on Saturday afternoon, and Dani Janssen’s after-the-Oscars party on Sunday night. Both hosts give similar reasons for cancelling their events this year: domicile problems. There are still the Oscar weekend’s Friday night agency parties — Jim Berkus” UTA party and Ari Emanuel’s Wme fete and Bryan Lourd’s CAA bash. And the fundraisers like Elton John’s and the blowouts like Vanity Fair‘s. But for years the place to really see the Big Media moguls, past and present, and their assorted pilot fish on parade has been Diller’s lawn luncheon ostensibly in honor of Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

Sun Valley, Idaho -- Major media executives are packing their bathing suits, Blackberrys and iPods this weekend, headed for their version of summer camp -- the annual gathering put together by financier Herb Allen in this exclusive resort.
For five days beginning Tuesday, several hundred media mavens of all stripes will sit through confabs and participate in informal business discussions on topics as far-ranging as Iraq, the economy and the Googling of everything.
Though they wouldn't put it this way, they also get to look and feel important -- and watch veterans like Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone in shorts, sipping cool drinks and looking debonair with their much younger trophy wives.
Last year, the trendy topic was "Content Is King"; this year, Allen & Co. is being predictably tight-lipped about conference subjects and even guest attendees. Best bet: It's still Iraq, the economy and the Googling of everything. Maybe even a deal or two.
Spokesperson Eileen Vegg said the media is allowed informal access to the various moguls but are not allowed to attend any presentation, lecture or meal.
Among those likely to make the trek, besides Murdoch (with son Laclan) and Redstone, are Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett, eBay's Meg Whitman, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts co-founder Henry Kravis, Sirius' Mel Karmazin, Viacom's Philippe Dauman, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, Sony's Howard Stringer, former top dog at Time Warner Richard Parsons, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Warner Music's Edgar Bronfman Jr., Universal's Ron Meyer, Disney's Robert Iger and Paramount's Brad Grey.
New media will be repped by such upstarts as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Ning founder and Facebook board member Marc Andreessen, Sling Media's Blake Krikorian and Google's Sergei Brin and Eric Schmidt.
Such Hollywood agents as Caa's Richard Lovett, Uta's Jim Berkus, Icm's Jeff Berg and Wma's Jim Wiatt also generally jet in.
Bill Gates, normally an attendee, may be a no-show this year. He stepped down as CEO of Microsoft last week to turn his attention to his foundation. So while Gates may be looking to gather donations from this gaggle of billionaires, he won't likely be directly involved in any corporate intrigue. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is not expected to attend due to a prior engagement, Reuters reported.
DreamWorks co-founder Jeff Katzenberg, and possibly Steven Spielberg or David Geffen, may appear, with the latter two likely there to talk up DreamWorks' anticipated big deal with India's Reliance conglomerate. It's even conceivable that Reliance topper Anil Ambani, whose company is involved in everything from energy to entertainment, might make the trip for the first time.
Several attendees said they are excited about the idea that one or both of the presidential candidates would arrived on the Sun Valley airport tarmac. John McCain and Barack Obama might want to curry favor with a presumably relaxed group of high-profile billionaires. Former British prime minister Tony Blair showed up last year.
Attendees will surely note the absence of director Sydney Pollack, a good friend of Allen's who attended every year. He died of cancer in May.

Longtime UTA partners Tracey Jacobs and David Kramer have been upped to the board of directors at UTA.
The pair join Jim Berkus, Peter Benedek, Jay Sures and Jeremy Zimmer on the board, which is the agency's primary governing body. The six board members also are part of the 17-member UTA partnership.
The agency said the move is a recognition of Jacobs and Kramer's key roles in the growth of the company.
Kramer, who heads UTA's motion picture literary department, represents many of the industry's best-known writers, directors and producers, including John August, Curtis Hanson, Charlie Kaufman and Harold Ramis.
Jacobs, who is co-head of the talent department, represents such actors as Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman; such filmmakers as Lasse Hallstrom, Greg Mottola and Mike White; and TV titan Dick Wolf.
In addition, both have been singled out for their longtime mentoring of younger agents.
Kramer joined UTA in 1992 in the mailroom and rose through the agency ranks in the motion picture literary department.
