Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore are teased as playing the same character for feminist body-horror thriller “The Substance.”
The Cannes feature, which premieres in competition at the festival, has already been picked up by Mubi for worldwide distribution. French director Coralie Fargeat helms her sophomore film, following her debut “Revenge” which premiered at TIFF in 2017.
“The Substance” is titled for a mysterious serum that transforms users into the ideal versions of themselves. The elusive official synopsis reads: “It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And there’s only one rule: You share time. One week for you. One week for the new you. Seven days each. A perfect balance. Easy. Right? If you respect the balance…what could possibly go wrong?”
The teaser shows Moore intently watching an ad for the substance injection and contemplating undergoing its cellular division. Could Qualley be who Moore transforms into?...

The 2022 Sundance Film Festival arguably was among the best years for recent breakout filmmakers. Several new filmmakers jumped out as promising voices: Cooper Raiff with “Cha Cha Smooth,” Nikyatu Jusu with “Nanny,” and Julian Higgins with “God’s Country.” But arguably, the film that popped the most, perhaps because of its second life on Netflix and streaming services, was John Patton Ford’s “Emily The Criminal” starring Aubrey Plaza.

Sometimes, when you’re looking to be entertained, only a thriller will cut it. If you ever find yourself feeling like life is getting inexplicably dark, and morality is becoming more ambiguous, immersing yourself in a tense world of serial killers, terrorists, and crooked sleazebags of all kinds is a pretty great form of escapism. The genre is broad enough to encompass a wide variety of tropes, so you could probably watch thrillers forever and never get bored.
Netflix’s thriller offerings are surprisingly well-rounded, offering a good mix of undisputed classics from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Greengrass as well as newer indie flicks that you may have missed. Whether you’re looking to revisit an old favorite, fill an embarrassing gap in your movie knowledge, or find something new and cutting-edge that will blow your mind, the genre always has something for you. I recall researching filmmaker John Patton Ford for our Sundance predictions just prior to him launching Emily the Criminal (Best First Screenplay – Independent Spirit Awards) to put it simply he is a feel-good story of someone who tasted the promise of a break-out career to wait his turn only two decades later. So it’s nice to see the original L.A. underbelly thriller led by Aubrey Plaza has paid off big time. Deadline reports that he is now tapped to make his sophomore feature – teaming with StudioCanal and Blueprint Pictures’ Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin for what is coined as a “satirical thriller.”…...

After a major bidding war, Zach Cregger’s Barbarian follow-up Weapons landed at New Line and now we have a few major updates. With a shoot set to kick off this July, Production Weekly reports Rooney Mara will star in the project and they’ve revealed a logline: “A multi and inter-related story horror epic centered around witchcraft and missing children.” The film was previously described as being tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 epic Magnolia, so expect many more cast members to join the ensemble.

Saturday saw awards season alight on the Independent Spirit Awards, which honours, as the title might clue you in, indie movies. And it was another big day for Everything Everywhere All At Once, which added seven prizes, including Best Feature, to its already impressive awards haul.
The awards — which used to be held the day before the Oscars, but shifted in 2021 – introduced gender neutral acting categories, leading to the likes of Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh competing against Paul Mescal and Jeremy Pope. Yeoh took the win for Eeaao, while the movie also scored Best Director for the Daniels, Best Supporting Performance for Key huy Quan (the latest in his apparent sweep of the category), Best Screenplay, Best Editing for Paul Rogers and Breakthrough Performance for Stephanie Hsu.

The host of the 2023 Spirit Awards, Hasan Minhaj, suggested in his monologue that Cate Blanchett was the one to beat at this year’s awards.
But instead, Blanchett and her film Tár nearly went home empty-handed, only winning one of the seven awards for which it was nominated. The Focus film won in the best cinematography category but lost in the other categories in which it was nominated.
Tár wasn’t the only movie with multiple Spirit Awards nominations to fail to win, as Everything Everywhere All at Once’s dominance meant that the following films, all of which were up for several awards, were also shut out: Four-time nominee Palm Trees and Power Lines and three-time nominees Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet; The Inspection; and Murina.

As awards season continues, Saturday night saw the Directors Guild of America handing out their awards. And, perhaps not too surprisingly (though it was their first DGA win), Everything Everywhere All At Once filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took home the big feature film prize.
"This has been an incredible year for our little film that somehow keeps going," Kwan said as part of his acceptance speech. The pair won over the likes of TÁR's Todd Field, Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, The Banshees Of Inisherin's Martin McDonagh and The Fabelmans' Steven Spielberg.
In the First Time Feature Director category, Aftersun's Charlotte Wells won, over the likes of Saint Omer's Alice Diop and Emily The Criminal's John Patton Ford.

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.

The 75th annual Directors Guild Awards have been handed out at the Beverly Hilton, and the night’s big award brought a bit of a surprise as Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, beat out Steven Spielberg for the top prize.
The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in 74 years. Last year, the guild awarded Jane Campion its top film prize for The Power of the Dog, which marked a big step on her path to winning Best Director at the Oscars.

The Directors Guild of America revealed its winners for the 2023 DGA Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles Saturday night, with Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan taking home the top prize for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
To kick off the ceremony, Lesli Linka Glatter, the DGA’s president, offered welcome remarks before introducing host Judd Apatow, who has previously hosted the annual show three times.
During his opening monologue, the comedian delivered some punches, mocking the fact that the show was only being livestreamed “to the back of this room. This show is so irrelevant, it’s shocking Elon Musk hasn’t bought it yet.” His joke about “honoring the directors who didn’t feel a need to make a Pinocchio movie this year” received a big reaction from the audience, and he also nodded to the fact that there were no female filmmakers nominated in the top director category this year.
