Exclusive: The BBC has quietly cut by two-thirds the length of news bulletins on Greg James’ Radio 1 breakfast show, one of the UK broadcaster’s most important ways of reaching young people.
Newsbeat updates on Breakfast with Greg James have been slashed from three minutes to just one minute this week, with the BBC declining to provide a reason for the change.
BBC insiders are concerned about peak-listening news bulletins being butchered, with one person telling Deadline that they “can’t understand how it can be defended.”
There is suspicion that the change has been made in a naked attempt to keep hold of listeners in the week Capital launched a revamped breakfast show with former Radio 1 DJ Jordan North.
The BBC declined to comment on whether shorter bulletins are a tactical short-term switch or a more strategic permanent change. “Not a great look either way,” said an insider.

One of the BBC’s highest profile radio presenters has apologized for comments about people with glass eyes in a recent video to promote his new children’s book.
Greg James, who presents BBC Radio One’s flagship breakfast show, and former newsreader Chris Smith appeared in a video to promote The Twits Next Door, their co-written book inspired by Roald Dahl’s famous characters The Twits.
Viewers watched them discuss how to make their fictional characters “more revolting… really gross and horrible.” The BBC reports that when illustrator Emily Jones suggested giving characters a glass eye, Smith responded: “That’s it. What a disgusting pair of Twits.”
After the video appeared, criticism of the pair included a statement from The Royal National Institute of Blind People, which the BBC quotes as saying:

Channel 4 entertainment format Rise and Fall has been canceled after one season following months of fevered industry speculation.
Rise and Fall aired just under a year ago across three weeks but couldn’t match the hype or ratings success of its BBC rival The Traitors, both of which are produced by Studio Lambert, which also makes Gogglebox for Channel 4.
According to The Sun, the show hosted by Radio 1’s Greg James has been scrapped, and a Channel 4 spokeswoman confirmed the news to Deadline.
In Rise and Fall, one group of contestants took part in challenges in the basement of a high-rise while another group at the top dictated events, with players frequently eliminated and some moving up and down the building as they chased a cash prize.
The show has become somewhat reflective of a difficult few months for Channel 4, which has been grappling with the ad recession.

Greg James has recalled being hit “in the head” by a bus and then berated by the driver.
The Radio 1 DJ and presenter appearing on the How To Fail podcast when he shared the anecdote with host Elizabeth Day.
“I got really cross at a bus driver once. I was waiting for a bus because I’m incredibly down to earth and take the bus,” the 37-year-old said. “He swooped in so quickly he hit my head. He actually hit my head.
“I was on the pavement and I went, ‘Mate, you just hit me in the head with your bus’. He went, ‘Oh shut up.’
“I said, ‘What do you mean shut up? You hit me with your bus, look how big your bus is.’”
Elsewhere in the episode, James spoke about suffering from self-doubt and the pressures of hosting one of the nation’s biggest breakfast radio shows.

A British radio and TV presenter has expressed the fear that his career will be rendered obsolete with the rise of ChatGPT, and the prospect of A.I. robots who will become better, funnier, cleverer, and at the fraction of the price of human beings on screen.
Greg James has been presenting the BBC’s Radio 1 youth-targeted Breakfast Show since 2018, and has recently made the move into TV, hosting a new reality show on Channel 4, Rise and Fall.
Striking a similar tone to a prescient interview David Bowie gave in 2000, giving advance notice of the good and the bad potential of the internet, something his interviewer seemingly scoffed at – and which is still often re-broadcast – James told the British press:
“I’ve got to be better than an A.I. That’s my challenge. It’s quite scary, how quickly things are moving but we can work with technology.

For underground music talent, it’s back to the BBC barricades. In 2010, a high-profile campaign was launched to save leftfield-leaning new music station 6 Music. Were it not for the 25,000 emails that bombarded the BBC in support of the station, we might never have heard of Fontaines DC, Idles or Jockstrap. And now a similar groundswell of objection is rising to the news that all 32 of the station’s talent-hunting BBC Introducing DJs nationwide have been put on notice of redundancy, following leaked proposals that suggest the Beeb is considering culling two-thirds of their output, or merging shows into larger regional broadcasts.
Now this might, at first glance, look like a very post-Brexit sort of streamlining; cutting down on frivolous, niche-interest expenditure so that more of our precious license fee can be syphoned into Claudia Winkleman’s Traitors knitwear budget. Plus, the most high-profile acts discovered through the network – Ed Sheeran,...

Harry Styles has released new music for the first time in two years, ahead of the release of his his upcoming album "Harry's House", which is due to drop on May 20. Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Greg James, Styles said the new single "was the last song that was written for the album. It was written in the countryside in England, and it's one of my favorite songs on the album. It's about embracing change, losing oneself, finding oneself."
To record the new single, Styles pretty much took over his friend's living room. "I'd set up a studio in my friend's front room, about an hour and a half outside of London," he told James. "[My friend] thought 'no problem' and thought I was going to bring a little bit of stuff. I turned up with a lot of gear and turned the whole front room into like a fully-functioning studio.

"Bridgerton" stars Nicola Coughlan and Simone Ashley recently joined BBC Radio 1's Greg James on the breakfast show to chat about the new season of Netflix's most talked-about period romance - and how fans reacted to Ashley joining the cast.
"It was all so fast; it happened in like 14 days, before I knew it. I remember I bumped into [Nicola] when I was going in for wig tests and makeup tests. That was like preproduction," Ashley told James.
Coughlan said, "I completely slid into your DMs the moment I found out you were cast - I was like, 'Hello!' We were very excited for new people to come in, and because it's a book series, we knew that it was Kate and Edwina coming in. Fans of the books are obsessed with Kate. Like obsessed. Ring! Ring! Tom Holland's on the line and it's a phone call you don't want to miss. On Feb. 10, the Spider-Man actor stopped by BBC Radio 1 to chat with host Greg James about his forthcoming film, Uncharted, which is set to be released worldwide on Feb. 18. During the conversation, Holland was asked to play the prank game "Sit Down, Stand Up" in which he went through his phone book and randomly chose one of his closest friends to find out whether they are sitting down or standing up. The catch is, the Brit can't let them know why he asked them that awkward question. After a few phone calls to U.K. rapper Stormzy,...

Camila Cabello, you are one sneaky "Señorita"! In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1's Greg James, the 22-year-old singer admitted she stole something from Kensington Palace when she visited last month. In October, Camila and her mother visited the palace with the finalists of the BBC Radio 1 Teen Heroes Awards, and when Greg dared her to steal a pencil during the event, she obliged. "You can't not do a triple doggy dare," Camila said during the interview, admitting that she nervously threw it in her mom's purse. "So, I still have it. I'm sorry William, and I'm sorry Kate."
After making a clean getaway, Camila confessed to her misdeed. "I honestly couldn't sleep last night, I had to get it off my chest," she joked. Making the story even better, the official Kensington Palace Twitter account replied to the...

Camila Cabello loves when boyfriend Shawn Mendes calls her señorita, but apparently not everyone is a fan of their Pda. Sitting down with BBC Radio 1's Greg James, the 22-year-old responded to some hilarious unpopular opinions from the show's listeners—one of which was disliking Pda. "Public displays of affection on Instagram are too much," the fan said, explaining that she doesn't like when couples get too mushy on social media. Unbeknownst to her, Camila is the unofficial queen of Pda. After hearing the listener make her case against Pda, the "Living Proof" singer said, "Ouch, I feel personally targeted. I feel personally attacked. Yeah, Pda is terrible. I mean, kissing in...
