One thing that set Diego Luna's portrayal of Cassian Andor apart from other characters in 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" was the fact that Luna retained his Mexican accent to play the captain from the Rebel Alliance, adding a culturally specific flair to Luna's performance and imbuing the universe with a unique Latino character. Though the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy tried diversifying the franchise, it, unfortunately, failed to offer depth and substance, sidelining John Boyega's Finn as well as Kelly Marie Tran's Rose.

Star Wars Celebration is off to an eventful start this week, with fans clamoring over the news of several new projects from Lucasfilm, including a film about the earliest days of the Jedi. With so many announcements ringing in our ears, it's easy to forget about some of the projects that are already in progress. It's no secret that we here at /Film think "Andor" is one of the best pieces of "Star Wars" media ever. If we weren't already convinced by the first handful of episodes, then the prison storyline for the titular antihero (Diego Luna) solidified this. Cassian's experiences and the brutal exploration of outer space prison industrial complexes remain one of the highlights of the entire franchise.
Thankfully, according to the cast and crew at the "The Making of 'Andor' Season One" panel at "Star Wars" Celebration, those scenes weren't nearly as heart-wrenching to film as they were to watch. However, that didn't mean they weren't just as intense. That's because they implemented a theatrical approach to some of these scenes, particularly those set in the harrowing Narkina 5 prison. This included rehearsing big action scenes while the sets were still being built.
"We rehearsed that scene like theater," said Luna during the panel.

Illuminative, the Native woman-led social justice organization, has announced the launch of the Indigenous House at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Indigenous House will open its doors on Main Street in Park City, Utah, where it will spotlight the creativity of Native peoples, unveil new research on Native voices in media and provide a space for community members and allies to explore issues that impact Native peoples.
“We are beyond thrilled to open the doors to the Indigenous House for the very first time at Sundance Film Festival,” Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and executive director of Illuminative, said in a statement. “Storytelling is a powerful force for change, and we’ve seen firsthand how impactful Native representation is. The entertainment industry has always been one of the biggest perpetrators of our erasure, but Native peoples have flipped the script and are breaking barriers and making incredible strides in representation.

The last three episodes of “Andor” featured a prison without bars, but part of both the thrill and the pathos of the latest “Star Wars” series is that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) has felt like a captive of the Empire the entire time. How does one go about creating one of the best, most intense, and formally daring stories in all of "Star Wars?" Well, you go out, get the most talented artists, and put them in charge of various levels of production. Sounds simple enough, right? Having a filmmaker of the caliber of Tony Gilroy spearhead "Andor" already put this prequel series on solid ground, but his decision to collaborate with the best in the business has clearly been paying dividends throughout the first several episodes of the season. But while Gilroy's vision has received all its deserved praise, we'd be remiss not to look deeper and show some appreciation for the below-the-line contributions that have played invaluable roles in turning "Andor" into the acclaimed addition to the franchise that it is (you can read /Film's review here).

When Toby Haynes took over for creator Tony Gilroy as the director of Andor’s first block of episodes, he, too, was shocked by the bold direction of the show.
Besides heavier themes and a more serious tone, it was extremely important to Gilroy that his series have verisimilitude, and that meant foregoing the franchise’s fondness for prominent Easter eggs. Gilroy even encouraged his collaborators to put away their Star Wars fandom in order to make a show that isn’t hyperaware that it’s Star Wars.
Haynes, who’s a lifelong Star Wars fan, admits there was some concern about his passion for the franchise, but ultimately, he made it clear that he’s a storyteller first.

Production designer Luke Hull crafted a working city for “Andor,” the “Star Wars” series streaming Wednesdays on Disney+.
The show, a prequel to the 2016 film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” follows eventual rebel hero Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and introduces audiences to new locations and planets. The most ambitious of these is Ferrix, a salvaging outpost on the edge of the galaxy that keeps itself free from the Empire’s interference.
The planet Cassian calls home is an arid one, which presented Hull and showrunner Tony Gilroy with the challenge of designing an environment that felt different from Tatooine or Jakku, places “Star Wars” fans know well. Hull, who won an Emmy for his work on the limited series “Chernobyl,” says, “We didn’t want it to fall into the trap of being a town in a desert, or I was quite keen for it not to be a frontier town.

Andor follows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor from the Gilroy penned Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in his rise from being a refugee guy to a rebel who looks to redeem his planet Kenari; his people largely wiped out due to an alleged mining accident from the empire.

“Andor” is, both by design and circumstance, immediately different from its “Star Wars” television predecessors. Where “The Mandalorian,” “Boba Fett,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” wove their biggest reveals into the larger fabric of the Lucasfilm universe, “Andor” doesn’t rush toward those moments that might make fans gasp out of pure recognition. Instead, it does something more surprising still: it tells the story of people who have nothing to do with Solos, Skywalkers or Palpatines, but whose lives matter nonetheless.
Of course, at least part of the reason the series can take its time this way is because haunted hustler Cassian Andor isn’t a brand-new character at all. Set design is an intricate and often underappreciated aspect of filmmaking. After all, the majority of settings in a movie don't just appear there out of thin air. Most of the time, it takes nearly a village of designers and construction workers to create the best-looking sets for a movie or television show. This is especially true if the sets are for a major science-fiction franchise like "Star Wars."
During a press conference for the Diego Luna-starring "Star Wars" prequel "Andor," showrunner Tony Gilroy took time to describe the work of Luke Hull, the show's set designer. Comparing him to the famous composer Mozart, he praised the designer for his work and teased just how massive in scale the sets for the "Rogue One" prequel will be.
"[Hull and the production team] built an eight-and-a-half acre city for us that we will use for all twelve episodes," Gilroy revealed. "We built a place. We built a whole culture.

With production in Moscow continuing at a steady clip throughout the coronavirus pandemic after a brief lockdown last spring, industry insiders believe the Russian capital can blossom into one of the world’s next shooting hotspots.
That was the takeaway from a panel discussion that was held this week during the virtual Key Buyers Event, which takes place online June 8-10.
“Moscow, and Russia in general, is underrated as a production destination,” said Val Kupeev, head of international relations and production service for Bazelevs, which has serviced productions such as Amazon Prime’s “Jack Ryan,” FX series “The Americans,” and Fox’s “Red Sparrow.”
“We have over 200 big and small productions a year, maybe more,” he continued, noting that Bazelevs has the capacity to service two to four largescale studio projects a year, as well as several smaller shoots and numerous commercials. “I’m pretty confident in what we have here.

Oscar nominees “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” were the big winners Saturday night at the 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards (held at The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown). Barbara Ling’s elegiac recreation of 1969 Hollywood beat Dennis Gassner’s innovative period work on Sam Mendes’ one-shot, World War I extravaganza “1917” for the period prize, while Lee Ha Jun’s extraordinary production design on Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” took contemporary honors. The wins for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” suggest they are not out of the running for the Production Design Oscar.
Oscar ballots are in voters hands, due Tuesday, February 4.

Netflix was in fashion this week as it wined and dined the cream of the U.K.’s rising talent, including BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits. The streaming giant teamed with Vogue for a dinner at Soho nightspot Kettners, hosted by its London-based VP of originals, Anne Mensah, and Edward Ennuinful, editor-in-chief of the British edition of the fashion bible.
Netflix has partnered with BAFTA on its Breakthrough Brits talent scheme, and is pushing deeper into local originals as it looks to the international business as a key growth-driver. Winning over the U.K.’s best writers, actors, directors, and producers is part of the plan, not least as it tees up productions that will shoot at Shepperton Studios, its massive new production hub near London.
“You guys are the people who literally keep our lights on – creatively and figuratively,” Mensah told the assembled talent as they sat down to dinner after a drinks reception.

It’s been a busy few months for Luke Hull, a production designer on “Chernobyl.” Fresh from landing an Emmy for his work on the HBO and Sky hit series, he has been named one of BAFTA and Netflix’s Breakthrough Brits, a cohort of standout talent who get a year of mentoring and have their burgeoning careers fast-tracked.

BAFTA and Netflix have raised the curtain on the 2019 class of Breakthrough Brits. The 20-strong cohort, spanning talent from film, TV and games, includes “Sex Education” writer Laurie Nunn, “The Virtues” actress Niamh Algar, “Chernobyl” production designer Luke Hull, and “Saint Maud” director Rose Glass.
The Breakthrough scheme has been run by BAFTA since 2013; this year is the first that the initiative has also had the backing of Netflix. The 71st Emmy Awards kicked off Saturday and Sunday with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. As a cascade of Emmys were handed out in technical and acting categories, and there were plenty of expected wins and some surprises.

With 97 Emmys set to be given out over the two-night Creative Arts ceremony, it can be easy to forget that the silos the Television Academy creates for awards purposes belie the need for crafts departments to collaborate as much as possible to create a successful show.
Ask even casually, and artisans at just about every stage of production will stop to acknowledge their crew, co-workers and the departments whose work intertwines with their own. For double Emmy-nommed sound editor Mandell Winter, the producers, director and film editor are his closest collaborators. He works with them to get a careful understanding of what sounds are needed for a project. He also talks with other sound editors to ensure whatever they need makes it to the mixing stage and is part of the overall editorial process, making adjustments as needed.

“What makes ‘Chernobyl’ particularly rich visually, is the amount of detail that we’ve managed to cram into those five episodes,” explains production designer Luke Hull. After “Chernobyl,” Craig Mazin expanded his creative partnerships, which required him to move offices in Old Town Pasadena to accommodate a growing staff. In addition to only being “essentially 13 minutes from my house,” Mazin says he likes that pocket of town because of the older architecture that often includes exposed brick. “It’s funky, and I don’t know how to write in a normal space,” he says.
