The Walking Dead is a show with a lot of interesting characters who speak in interesting ways. Negan is probably the most obvious one; he spins long sentences and crams in strange, infantile profanity. Rick has lots of long speeches that allow writers to really dig into a specific topic. Jadis is... well, she's different, but not entirely complicated, you just cut out non-essential words and boil everything down to noun-verb or verb-adjective phrases. But the character that has to be the most fun to write for is Eugene Porter, and he's the...

In 2015, Bryce Dallas Howard blew us away when she proved she could cry on command while talking about Home Depot during an appearance on Conan. This week, the actress - who's promoting the new season of Black Mirror on Netflix - returned to give a tutorial on her tearful ways. During her Monday night appearance, Bryce tried to get Conan to shed a few tears by revealing her go-to tricks (and asking for money in return). Even though she managed to cry again (hint: it's all in the yawn), we can't say the same about Conan's success rate. Time flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday I was watching Animaniacs Live, interviewing folks about Turtles and cartoons, seeing the latest in geek fashions, hanging out with American Gods, and chatting with the Kings of Con at Sdcc, not to mention chillin’ at Nerd HQ. And now suddenly it’s September, and I’ve since attended both the UK Discworld Convention and Dragon Con! Convention season: it really never stops, does it?
Despite my busy schedule, I don’t want to miss sharing any of the fantastic adventures I’ve been having with you; so first, let’s rewind to San Diego and reminisce about the summer party-party-parties, because they are a staple of Sdcc and deserve to be featured. Every year, I try to line up at least a couple of parties each night, because, let’s be frank, I just love a good party. (I...

Bring me Louis Theroux! There are many moments during this disappointing depiction of Scientology where you may be crying out that very same plea.
Unlike the staggeringly good Amy, this documentary fails to muster any sense of objectivity towards the subject matter and frequently comes across as overly manipulative - the very trait it seeks to expose and demonise when it comes to Scientology. It's epitomised by the use of footage featuring key figures in the religion, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise and its founder L Ron Hubbard, which often dwells or freeze frames on the blazing eyes or wild laughter in a bid to make them look crazy. It devalues its objectives.
Such subjective treatment needs a stronger authorial presence in the film, beyond the occasional off-camera voice of the interviewer.

A review of tonight's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" coming up just as soon I've lost the right to pee... Though "AC/DC" aired more than a month after the most recent episode, the two still feel linked to me in the ways that they've tried, to mixed success, to lay some emotional foundation underneath Jake's usual antics. In "Sabotage," he admitted that he can't sit back and let other people help him because of abandonment issues from his dad, but the moment was so brief that it felt more like a distraction than anything else. Here, he eventually tells Terry and Charles the real reason why he can't let go of any case: the one time he did it, the perp stayed free long enough to kill a few innocent people. Here, it didn't feel like the show was trying to skimp on the dramatic beat, but rather that it maybe didn't...

We've all wept over the end of Parks and Recreation. Some of us grieve in different ways, though. For example, we've made a life-size papier-mâché replica of Ron Swanson that's glowering at us from the corner his very moment. Aubrey Plaza? Well, Aubrey Plaza gave one of her castmates a vial of blood and some of her hair. "Aubrey Plaza and I are very close," Aziz Ansari told Conan O'Brien on Monday's Conan. "We've known each other before the show, and we became really good friends on the show, and she gave me this gift." He then pulled out a note from Plaza.

Yesterday, I published the first half of a long email exchange with “Parks and Recreation” co-creator Mike Schur looking at the origins and evolutions of some of the show’s most memorable supporting characters and running gags. That discussion concludes today with talk of DJ Roomba (who came very close to never being a part of our lives), Li’l Sebastian, Burt Macklin and a lot more. But we start out with the first — and last — appearance of Pawnee’s greatest mystery man. I know you had talked in the past about wanting to get Bill Murray to play the occasionally-mentioned but never-seen Mayor Gunderson. How did that actually come about? And if he had said no, was there a back-up Gunderson plan, or would he have simply remained a mystery forever? Mike Schur: We wanted to do an episode in the final season where someone died. We settled on Gunderson,...

A few weeks ago, while working on my review of the “Parks and Recreation” episode “Save Jj’s,” I asked people on Twitter for the name of one of the show’s weirder recurring characters, the creepy, heavily-tattooed owner of Pawnee’s pawn shop. My followers identified him as Herman Lerpiss — and, better, pointed out that there have been a lot of characters named Lerpiss in Pawnee over the years, often with far more elaborate biographies than has ever been suggested on the show itself. This made me realize that, while I have interviewed “Parks” co-creator Mike Schur many times over the years about major developments for Leslie, Ron, April, Andy, and the rest of the show’s main characters (you can read some of those interviews here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here , here and here), I’d barely scratched the surface of all the crazy background characters...

Parks and Recreation fans finally met Mayor Walter Gunderson on Tuesday night's show, and he was a familiar face.
Just days after Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special, Bill Murray joined SNL alum Amy Poehler's NBC comedy as the Pawnee politician whose identity has not been revealed until now.

For those Parks and Rec fans paying attention, Murray's cameo has been hinted at in the past. Back in 2011, Poehler showed up on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and said she'd cast the funnyman as the mysterious mayor if he came at a good rate. "Bill Murray, if you’re listening, I will pay you $250 to do one episode of my show," she joked.
"There was no attempt really to lure him -- we just kept saying it out loud," Parks and Rec's executive producer Michael Schur told Entertainment Weekly. "Aubrey [Plaza] met him somewhere and said, 'You should...

In a parallel universe, Jim O'Heir could have spent the last seven seasons on "Parks and Recreation" not as office punching bag Garry/Jerry/Larry/Terry/Garry, but as Ron Swanson. That's the role he auditioned for at the start, and while he didn't get it, Mike Schur and Greg Daniels liked his audition enough to hire him as a background character with the potential to do more, much like Stanley, Phyllis and Meredith on "The Office." It was a move that paid out well for all involved, and tonight's second episode — the last regular installment of "Parks" before next week's series finale — had a crowning moment of sorts for O'Heir's long-suffering alter ego. (I reviewed both of tonight's episodes here.) Earlier today, we spoke about the ups, downs, and many names of Garry Gergich, the experience of being a part of this great series, as well as the Kickstarter...

Nick Offerman could go incognito without his signature 'stache! The "Parks & Rec" star debuted his mustache-free face at the premiere of "Me And Earl And The Dying Girl" at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday. Now that the NBC sitcom has wrapped up production, the actor said goodbye to his character's famous facial hair and went in the opposite direction from the look he sported for seven seasons -- beard, with no mustache. On Friday, Nick's costar Retta shared one of the final photos of a mustache-clad Offerman during his last day on set. "Ladies and gentlemen, that's a series wrap on Mr. Nick Offerman," Retta captioned the pic on WhoSay. "#RonSwanson He's a simple man. He likes pretty, dark-haired women, and breakfast food... For ensemble comedies to truly work, you need a group of incredibly talented people, not just one major star. That’s true for shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, New Girl, and, most recently, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, even though each of these four series has one standout performer that has risen above the rest. Parks has Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson, Community had Donald Glover (and still has Danny Pudi), New Girl‘s got Jake Johnson, who, in my eyes, has made Nick Miller one of the best characters currently on TV, but what about Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Who is that show’s star, or, if you will, its Mvp? As you can probably guess by the title of this article, I would say the breakout star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been Melissa Fumero, who plays straight-laced, rule-following Amy Santiago on the Fox comedy. While this may sound like blasphemy to many...

A quick review of tonight's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" coming up just as soon as I do my kegels secretly... The title story of "Stakeout" is a pretty familiar one, both for this series (Jake suffers for refusing to listen to obviously wise advice) and for sitcoms in general (Jake and Charles' fight at times was very evocative of the first Leslie/Ann fight on "Parks and Rec"), but was extremely well told. Even in a crowded episode with two other stories and the usual structural problems forced on them by the network (see my lament at the end of last week's review), the episode slowly and meticulously plotted out the disintegration of the Peralta/Boyle friendship over their Chanukah-length stay in the tiny apartment, and particularly after they had the terrible idea of crafting the no-no list(*). Other than Charles' hero-worship of Jake, there's no real reason these two very different men should be friends,...

Between Nick Offerman, Ron Swanson and Duke Silver, it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.
The 44-year-old actor declares his undying love for whiskey in a new music video courtesy of Elite Daily. This video has it all: an acoustic performance, horseback riding, sheep-herding, woodworking and a rowboat.

Fans of Parks and Recreation know Offerman as breakfast-loving, woodworking, anti-government employee Ron Swanson, who moonlights as popular-with-the-middle-aged-housewives saxophone player Duke Silver. In this new video, Offerman shows off his musical talents and love of woodwork.
Offerman has been busy promoting the final season of Parks and Recreation, which kicks off Tuesday, Jan. 13, with back-to-back episodes on NBC. Just last month, he appeared in a sketch on Conan shilling hand-carved wooden emojis. You know, for a heavier and more rustic form of communication.

A review of tonight's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" coming up just as soon as my diet consists of flavorless beige smoothies... Now that was more like it. After a couple of episodes with weak Peralta stories, "Road Trip" was a half-hour where all three plots clicked. The title story revisited the ongoing Jake and Amy tension without pushing too hard on it, and did it in a way I can't recall many shows doing. Usually in a "will they or won't they" situation, one partner pines after the other at a time, going back and forth due to circumstance, always being miserable in silence. Here, neither Jake nor Amy has the guile to stay quiet about how they feel for very long. So even if the larger framework is similar — with Amy dumping Teddy while Jake and Sophia are still together and reasonably happy — each party knows that the other one likes them,...

I talked with Nick Offerman earlier this week and got the answer to the question I'm sure you're all wondering: A ukelele. What? You weren't clamoring for details on the latest carpentry projects from Hollywood's endlessly busy Renaissance Man? Personally, I'm always interested in Offerman's woodworking, because I know the value he puts in maintaining that pursuit and skill -- it's not just a hobby -- while following a schedule that would exhaust a lesser man. On Offerman's recent/current slate: He's completing work on the final season of "Parks and Recreation." He's touring the country with his one-man humor/lifestyle spectacle "Full Bush." He directed the marvelous and star-studded video for Tweedy's "Low Key." He's apparently co-producing a documentary about writer Wendell Berry. He appeared in the summer blockbuster "22 Jump Street" and probably has another half-dozen movies coming out soon. And this Sunday night (October 5), Offerman can be heard...

Boardwalk Empire begins in 1920. Its lead character, Nucky Thompson, is on top of the world. History is bending in his direction. Emmy nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10 by Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly. The pundits and critics have come to a consensus on the most likely nominees out of the numerous television shows on the air: a showdown between Breaking Bad and True Detective in Best Drama Series, Modern Family accruing a number of nominations at the cost of other comedy series. But what about the long shots? These performers and series would make deserving nominees, but for various reasons, are not expected to hear their names called. Here are five dream nominations in each of the major Comedy categories.
(Note: I only considered a nominee a long shot if it was actually submitted to that category. For example, I could not select Bob’s Burgers as Best Comedy Series, since it was submitted in the Animation categories instead. The Mindy Project is back next week! I repeat: The Mindy Project is back next week!
We’ve been patiently waiting for our Shulman & Associates fix since January, but enough is enough. After the midseason finale fireworks — as Mindy flew back to New York to get Cliff back, Danny grabbed her for a passionate mile-high make-out sesh — it’s a wonder we haven’t combusted from the anticipation. To help you hold out one more week, the Mindy cast hit PaleyFest at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Tuesday night for a revealing and laugh-filled panel.
So what does the future hold for Mindy and Danny?...

As with Sunday night's "Lost" panel, I stepped in to do a little TV duty this week and attended tonight's "Parks and Recreation" panel at the PaleyFest. I'm not sure there's a group of characters that I like spending time with each week as much as the "Parks" group right now. Pawnee has taken its place right alongside Springfield as one of the most fully-realized comedy communities in TV history. Each year, we learn more about the people of Pawnee and we learn more about the main characters and we just plain dig deeper into the roiling cauldron of weird that is headed up by the great Leslie Knope, played by the also-great Amy Poehler. After a very spirited round of interviews on the red carpet, I headed upstairs where they were just starting to screen this Thursday's new episode, "Galentine's Day." Thursday (Jan. 9) was a seminal moment in the run of "Parks and Recreation," a night that saw the beloved NBC comedy celebrate its 100th episode.
It was an episode that saw Leslie (Amy Poehler) vacate her seat as Pawnee city council member, Ann (Rashida Jones) and Chris (Rob Lowe) learn the sex of their baby and Andy (Chris Pratt) return home from London. So, yeah, kind of a big night.
But when Zap2it caught up with "Parks" creator Mike Schur at the big 100th episode cake-cutting celebration back in October, we wanted to look to the future. So, we asked him where he imagined Leslie Knope would be should the series make it to 200 episodes.
"In episode 200? Oh my God," he responds with a laugh. "She would be the Secretary General of the United Nations and she'd be, like, in Uzbekistan, talking U.N. peace-keeping troops through how to...

Over nine years after the Channel 4 news team first appeared on the big screen, Ron Burgundy and crew return this weekend in Anchorman: The Legend Continues. With a robust marketing campaign targeted at the original's rabid fanbase, Anchorman 2 should open in first place ahead of The Hobbit and a handful of newcomers. After opening to $28.4 million in July 2004, the original Anchorman ended its run with $85.3 million. Unfortunately the movie made next-to-nothing at the overseas box office, so initially a sequel didn't seem like it had much potential. In the years since, though, stars Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd have all seen their stars rise substantially. More importantly, the movie wound up connecting with a much larger audience in its post-theatrical release, and the endlessly quotable characters have become a permanent pop culture fixture. Eventually, it became fairly obvious that there was potential for a sequel. Paramount...

You’d have to have been hiding in a German san diego for the last several months not to know that Ron Burgundy is back on Dec. 18 in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Ever since Burgundy himself appeared on Conan in March 2012 to officially announce that a sequel was underway, Will Ferrell has been a pied piper (pied flutist?) for the movie, lending his character’s self-important persona to a deluge of promotional opportunities. By now, you’re seen many of the 70 commercials Ferrell did for Dodge Durango — 10 new spots are now viewable online — a happy accident that boosted Durango...

This is the third article in a three-part series.
Though many Academy Award Best Picture nominees contain—or are predominantly about—sex and relationships, very few have been about sex issues in law and politics. In recent years there has been Milk (2008), the biopic of Harvey Milk, a California politician and gay rights activist, and otherwise not much else. Even in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the AIDS epidemic was a hot button issue, few films of this genre made it to the Best Picture ticket (remember, Philadelphia was snubbed from the category in 1993). Sexual issues topics, though, have been more popular within the documentary medium: there was Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt (1989), which won for Best Documentary, and which was the first AIDS-related film to win an Oscar, the The Times of Harvey Milk (1984), which also won Best Documentary, and How to Survive a Plague...

Will Ferrell has been taking his "Anchorman" character Ron Burgundy everywhere lately -- he gave hair product advice on "Conan," he stopped by a North Dakota news broadcast. His latest target? "The Dan Patrick Show."
Check out these clips. Our favorites are the one where he does legendary sports calls, like Jack Buck calling Kirk Gibson's famous home run or Doug Davis calling Doug Flutie's Boston College hail mary -- with his patented Burgundy-ness, and the one at the very bottom where he fields a call from Champ Kind (David Koechner).
They talk about Kind's rejected sports catchphrases -- "Garbanzo beans!" and "Lemon pepper chicken!," which is a dish he loves but it just didn't catch on with the fans. Hee.
"Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" opens nationwide on Dec. 18.

Will Ferrell has been noticeably absent from promotional events for “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” because Ron Burgundy has taken over his body. Since Paramount launched it’s impressively-integrated publicity campaign — beginning with a series of largely improvised Dodge Durango commercials featuring the newsman selling the 2013 model — Burgundy has been turned into a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream flavor, issued Trick-or-Treating advice, warned against piracy, presented an award at MTV’s EMAs, released a book called “Let Me Off at the Top! My Classy Life and Other Musings,” signed it for lucky fans in Los Angeles, appeared on “Conan” (again), anchored an actual.

Will Ferrell has seemingly been everywhere lately promoting his new movie "Anchorman 2: THe Legend Continues" -- in character as Ron Burgundy, naturally. He recently did an appearance on "Conan" that was nothing short of hilarious and now he has tried his hand at an actual news anchor gig.
In the above video, Burgundy joins KXNews anchor Amber Schatz for a broadcast on the CBS affiliate in Bismarck, Nd -- "Amber, you look lovely tonight. ... Are you married? Well, I am so don't get any ideas," he begins.
The anchors relay a story about a Sheriff's deputy who is catching local speeders in Amidon -- known for its fairgrounds and church -- and a hockey fight, among others. The full newscast is worth a watch.

Have you ever wondered what true love sounds like? During the Sydney premiere of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the film's stars, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and David Koechner offered a possible answer, reprising their wonderful rendition of Starland Vocal Band's 1976 hit "Afternoon Delight" for an ecstatic crowd. The quartet famously sang the not-so-subtle love song a capella during the first Anchorman, and nearly a decade later they sound spry as ever, with Carrell still hitting all the right high notes and Koechner nailing his trademark "whoooops.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues doesn’t open in theaters until Dec. 20, but you don’t have to wait that long to see Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy back in action. In fact, the Me Decade’s most-famous fake newsman is practically everywhere these days, lending his classy prestige to Dodge Durangos (and then taking it back on Conan: “I drove it four feet and the thing cracked in half!”); Emerson College, which will temporarily rename its communications school after Burgundy; the Australian prime-minister election coverage; and MTV’s European Music Awards, which are, let’s be honest, the very definition of “classy prestige.

Back in March of 2012, Will Ferrell appeared as Ron Burgundy on "Conan" to announce Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was finally happening, and last night the legendary newsman returned to the TBS late night talk show to promote the upcoming comedy sequel from director Adam McKay. Never one to disappoint and put on a good show, Burgundy decided to pay tribute to Toronto mayor Rob Ford (currently being ridiculed for smoking crack, hanging out with hookers and other douchebaggery) by singing to his "dear, dear, dear friend." Ford is in hot water, but he had time to to post the video on Twitter saying, "I had to laugh at my friend Ron Burgundy & his take on my 2014 re-election campaign song." Watch now! Anchorman is back! The return of the Kvwn Channel Four News team means that David Koechner is back in the saddle as his cowboy-hat wearing, 'Whammy!' yelling sportscaster, Champ Kind. San Diego's favorite sons have left the Seventies behind and in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues – in theaters December 20 – they have found themselves in 1980s New York, spearheading a 24-hour news cycle movement. But has the Ron Burgundy-led team learned anything since their first foray as the overly confident, narcissistic gang of self-mythologizing journalists? "No!" laughs Koechner. The Big Bang Theory, Season 7, Episode 3, “The Scavenger Vortex”
Directed by Mark Cendrowski
Written by Dave Goetsch, Eric Kaplan & Steve Holland (Story), Steven Molaro, Jim Reynolds & Maria Ferrari (Teleplay)
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Est on CBS
Following its rather rocky start to the season, The Big Bang Theory delivers an outstanding episode this week. “The Scavenger Vortex” continues with this new pattern that the show has adapted since the start of the season- although the episode doesn’t exactly move the story forward, it does work as a great platform for some of the characters to interact and this week the pairings are even more hilarious than last week.

After a fairly unimaginative season finale, the premiere for season seven explores how the characters have adapted without Leonard once again. Despite the slight decline in comedy throughout season six, last season wrapped up well enough. The only problem was the repetition of a familiar storyline: Leonard going away. This time round a number of things have changed for the characters, making for a highly anticipated season seven premiere. Unfortunately the two parter is a little disappointing. The first episode is the better of the two, as we see what the characters have been up to since Leonard’s departure. With Leonard out of the mix a number of characters have...
