The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

By the time "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" hit theaters this year, a whole lot had happened between the popular franchise's second installment and its third. On screen, Nick (Louis Mandylor) got separated, Maria (Lainie Kazan) developed dementia, and Ian (John Corbett) retired. Offscreen, Andrea Martin gained new stardom playing demon-hunting nun Sister Andrea in the Paramount+ series "Evil," while the cast also lost one co-star -- Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021.
The new movie's plot hinges around the aftermath of patriarch Gus' (Constantine) death, as Toula (Nia Vardalos) explains in the film's trailer that it was Gus' last wish that the family visit his childhood village in Greece. Thus, instead of a wedding, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" actually centers around a family reunion with all the cultural flair you'd expect from the Portokalos family. If you missed the movie in theaters, you won't have to...

From live sports to new episodes of long-running dramas, there’s plenty of new content headed to your favorite streaming platforms this week.
Well, so much for the assumption that a resolution of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike would lead to a quick deal between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The top actors’ union in Hollywood resumed negotiations with the AMPTP last week, but talks broke down and no end to the strike is in sight.
For audiences, this unfortunate development likely won’t have much of an affect on their daily viewing yet. Scripted TV is still a long way off from returning to production, as writers are just now getting back to work on new scripts for future seasons. What could possibly go wrong in a movie where a grieving lawman brings home an AI robot who looks exactly like his dead wife? Pretty much everything, if the director is someone like James Bird and the movie is something like Wifelike. The movie, which has just dropped on Netflix, is not only terrible in terms of its technical craft; it is extremely problematic as well. Barring the performance of its lead actress, Elena Kampouris, nothing can save this atrocity. In case you have been unfortunate enough to go through this confusing mess of a movie, here’s an explainer for you.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens in the Movie?
It is hard to make any sense out of a screenplay that seems like it was written by a toddler but let us just get it over with. In the near future, a company named Wifelike is making these AI robots,...

Always trust the nuns.
Warner Bros. and New Line’s The Nun II kicked off the fall box office with a pleasing $32.6 million domestic opening from 3,726 theaters, more than enough to scare away The Equalizer 3 and win the weekend. Moviegoers between ages 18 and 34 made up a whopping 67 percent of ticket buyers, while the pic skewed slightly female (52 percent).
In 2018, The Nun opened to $53.8 million domestically on its way to earning $365.6 million at the worldwide box office — the top showing for any title in The Conjuring horror franchise, not adjusted for inflation. While the sequel’s domestic start came in behind the first film’s debut, no one is complaining. Overall domestic revenue for the weekend hit an estimated $88.9 million, up 118 percent over the same year last weekend.
Overseas, The Nun II launched to a rousing $52.7 million from 69 markets for an early foreign tally of $52.7 million, including scoring the biggest...

“The Nun II” spooked the box office with $13 million on opening day, including $3.1 million in previews.
The ninth and latest chapter in Warner Bros. “Conjuring” series is expected to open around to $31.3 million this weekend from 3,728 locations, a drop from the record-setting original movie but enough to surpass Denzel Washington and Sony’s “The Equalizer 3.” The 2018 “Nun” original scored the highest opening of a movie in the “Conjuring” universe with $53.8 million, and it’s the series’ highest-grossing worldwide with $365.5 million.
Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons return as Sister Irene and the titular Nun, respectively, with Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the franchise. Filmmaker Michael Chaves returns to the series after previously directing “The Curse of La Llorona” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” has officially hit theaters worldwide.
In an interview with TheWrap conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, star Andrea Martin teased that the latest installment will leave audiences with “a feeling of connection.”
“I think it will resonate with people in a very deep way having come out of the pandemic, because it’s all about family and connection and not isolation,” she said. “Everywhere the family goes, they go together. So I have a feeling that it will be like a warm hug watching this movie. I certainly felt like that when I was shooting it, but where we are as a world right now, I think we all want to be embraced by something familiar, by people that are familiar, that have been a part of our lives for 20 years.”

Warner Bros.’ New Line movie division should have no trouble scaring off the competition and winning this weekend’s box office contest. The Nun II — which officially kicks off the fall season after a busy summer — is hoping to open to $30 million domestically or more after earning $3.1 million in Thursday previews.
In 2018, The Nun opened to $53.8 million domestically on its way to grossing a stellar $365.6 million at the worldwide box office, the top showing for any title in The Conjuring horror franchise, not adjusted for inflation (that included a preview gross of $5.4 million).
“You can’t keep a good demon down — not when they can still bring in the crowds,” writes Frank Scheck in his review of the sequel for The Hollywood Reporter.
Set in 1956, the sequel sees Taissa Farmiga — the real-life sister of Conjuring star Vera Farmiga — return as Sister Irene, who, despite her gentle demeanor, can handle any demonic challenge.

Nia Vardalos is back as Toula, the Greek bride from the classic first film and now the middle aged Mom of college daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) and wife of Ian (John Corbett). The dying wish of Toula’s father is that she take his journal about his hometown Greek village and deliver it back to his childhood friends. When the gang take the trip to the village, with Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) and Aunt Frieda (Maria Vacratsis), as well as brother Nick (Louis Mandylor), it’s not what they expect, since the village seems to only be populated by a wacky mayor named Victory (Melinda Kotse-lou) and a scary...

There has already been one sequel, and despite the sequels’ titles, Toula is not getting married again, as she is still married to that first non-Greek guy from the original movie. Ever been invited to a family reunion you had no desire to attend? You may be tired of seeing your relatives and listening to their familiar routines, which can be downright annoying at times. But then you force yourself to go and you find that you have a good time after all, at least for a little while.
That’s roughly the experience of seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, the latest chapter in the saga of the eccentric Portokalas family previously seen in the wildly popular 2002 original and its much less successful 2016 sequel (the less said about the short-lived 2003 sitcom spin-off My Big Fat Greek Life, the better). If you enjoyed spending time with Nia Vardalos’ Toula and the rest of her extended clan, you’ll probably have a good time again, even if the characters and jokes are wearing thin with repetition.

More than twenty years ago, Nia Vardalos’s independent romantic comedy “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” — a Cinderella story of a burdened and awkward woman Toula (Vardalos) falling in love with a non-Greek man at the dismay of her extended Greek family — smashed box office record after box office record, grossing more than seventy times its budget worldwide. Vardalos was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and the film inspired both a spin-off television show and a less-than sequel in 2016. Now, Vardalos is back, with her fictional Portokalos family behind her, for a third entry in the series. Does the franchise still have the magic and charm of its original?
Well, a little vacation never hurt anyone, or at least not seriously, and once the Portokalos family arrives in their native Greece, you’re left wondering why they’ve been trying, for so many years, to fix all their problems with weddings.

“Give me a word, any word,” Michael Constantine’s Gus Portokalos implored to anyone who would listen in 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding, “and I’ll show you how the root of that word is Greek.” The old man’s words recur early on in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, spoken not by the Portokalos patriarch (Constantine himself died in 2021), but by his grieving daughter, Toula (Nia Vardalos), reminding her own daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), of Gus’s grinning legacy and the gaping hole he’s left behind.
Toula is doing her father’s voice and smiling when she delivers that tribute, but there are tears in her eyes too. The laughs here, for both characters and audiences, tend to echo through the gauze of nostalgia, making the film an unexpectedly moving entry in the franchise, if not an uproariously funny one. Back in 2002, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” introduced mainstream audiences to all the heartwarming moments, overbearing relatives, and downright craziness of coming from a large Greek-American family. Somehow, Nia Vardalos’ breakout rom-com spurred a two-decade-long trilogy; sadly, the third installment relies too heavily on its stunning Corfu scenery instead of an actual plot.
This is Vardalos’ first time in the director’s chair for the trilogy that she penned; “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is also Vardalos’ sophomore directorial effort overall. It shows. Jokes fall flat while attempts at seriousness are downright hilarious in their off-tone delivery.

As has become standard in recent years, our annual fall and winter film preview comes with something of an asterisk: it’s (another!) unpredictable time for movies, right down to when we might even expect to see them. With both the WGA and SAG-afra strikes still winding on, everything from production to promotion has been disrupted for many new features, and the entire calendar remains in flux.
And yet, even with those very valid concerns in place, the next three months at the multiplex (and beyond) offer a bounty of exciting new films. We’re talking new films from Martin Scorsese, Pablo Larraín, Sofia Coppola, Todd Haynes, Emerald Fennell, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Taika Waititi, Justine Triet, Wes Anderson, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Jeff Nichols is back, as is Godfrey Reggio and the juicy stars of “Chicken Run.” Festival faves like Christos Nikou, Kristoffer Borgli, and Chloe Domont make a play for further dominance.

Sean McNamara’s horror thriller “Vindicta” has been picked up by Paramount’s Republic Pictures. The film rounds up Elena Kampouris, Sean Astin and Jeremy Piven for a story about a twisted serial killer.
Astin previously starred in Season 2 of “Stranger Things” as fan-favorite Bob Newby, boyfriend of Joyce Byers. Piven is known for his role as Ari Gold in “Entourage” and starred in period drama series “Mr. Selfridge.” Kampouris is set to star in the upcoming film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” and previously led the 2020 remake of “Children of the Corn.”
Per “Vindicta’s” official logline, “When a city is terrorized by a sadistic serial killer, a seasoned detective and a newly recruited paramedic are forced into a deadly game of vengeance, only to discover the key to stopping the bloodshed lies in unlocking the truth of their own haunted pasts.” The film also stars Travis Nelson...

The Portokalos family is headed back to Greece! A third My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie is on the way, and this time it will follow Toula (Nia Vardalos) as she brings her entire family back to her late father Gus's (Michael Constantine) childhood village to reconnect with their roots.
The first "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" movie premiered in 2002, and focuses on 30-year-old Toula as she prepares to marry the very non-Greek Ian (John Corbett) in a lavish Grecian ceremony. The 2016 sequel follows Toula and Ian as they navigate family life with their defiant daughter (Elena Kampouris). Vardalos penned each of the films in addition to starring in them, but "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" marks the first time she's also serving as the director.
Apparently "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" was actually ready to go a few years ago, but was delayed by the pandemic.

It’s a big fat Greek reunion with third entry in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise. The official My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 trailer reveals Fotoula ‘Toula’ Portokalos (writer/director/actor Nia Vardalos) is keeping a promise to her late father to take the family back home and locate his old friends.

"You got us back to Greece. You're the head of the family now." Focus Features has unveiled an official trailer for the comedy sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, this time written and directed by actress Nia Vardalos - in addition to starring in it again. The original My Big Fat Greek Wedding is considered an all-timer comedy classic, released in 2002. The sequel dropped in 2016, again written by Vardalos, and wasn't as big of a hit. This next one will follow the Portokalos family on a trip to Greece for a family reunion. Back to Greece again! It's actually produced by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson for Playtone - they must be big fans of this series. The whole cast is back for more fun and food and Greek charm: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Elena Kampouris, Lainie Kazan, Andrea Martin, Louis Mandylor, Gia Carides, Gerry Mendicino, Joey Fatone,...

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was the true definition of a sleeper hit: a quirky romantic comedy that came out of nowhere to crack the top 10 at the 2002 box office and readily outgross the likes of "Minority Report," "Chicago," and "The Bourne Identity." (Just gonna let that sink in for a moment.) Now, 21 years later, Nia Vardalos' rom-com is giving rise to a trilogy with "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" -- a sequel that, contrary to its title, may not actually involve a wedding at all.
What shenanigans, you might ask, is Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos (Vardalos) and her zany clan of relatives up to this time? Taking a trip to Greece for a family reunion, naturally! Unfortunately, the Portokalos' would-be carefree vacation is tinged with a lining of sadness due to the recent passing of patriarch Costas/"Gus." The Portokalos family is coming together once again for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” but this time, they’re getting back to their roots.
In the first trailer for the threequel, we learn that the patriarch of the family, Gus, has passed away — the actor who played him, Michael Constantine, died in 2021 — and his dying wish was for his family to venture to the village in Greece that he grew up in. Yes, the whole family.
Naturally, chaos ensues, beginning with Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) happily doling out souvlaki to everyone on the plane, and Paris (Elena Kampouris) running into a handsome man named Aristotle who she apparently ghosted.

The Portokalos family is taking their Big Fat Greek life to the homeland in the official trailer for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.
The two-and-a-half-minute look at the third installment of the romantic comedy franchise opens on Nia Vardalos’ Toula catching audiences up, explaining that a lot has happened since her wedding in the first film to John Corbett’s Ian.
“My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village and reconnect with our roots, so we’re having a reunion,” Toula says. “And by we, I mean the whole family.”
The trailer footage also sees the lead character begin to take her place as the new “head of the family,” according to her brother, Nick (Louis Mandylor). The third film marks the first one in the franchise without the late Michael Constantine, who played Portokalos family patriarch Costas.

Children of the Corn is a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, this time by Shudder and directed by Kurt Wimmer.
An adaptation shaped for the modern “sensibility” towards King’s novel, which raises philosophical questions about whether “any time in the past was better”.
I have never read such negative reviews about a film.

Could they have saved themselves the effort of making it? The answer is a resounding “yes”. It’s just another horror telefilm and which with this supposed regeneration of the tale – without covering any new ground – loses almost everything quitessential from the novel and destroys everything that the 1984 film had about it that was good.

Stephen King‘s 1977 short story inspired an entire Children of the Corn franchise nearly a dozen deep, each new entry drifting further away from the source material. Writer/Director Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Ultraviolet) keeps that momentum going with the franchise’s eleventh installment, an entry that bears very little in common with King’s story other than murderous kids, an abundance of corn, and a small town Nebraska setting. If only Children of the Corn 2023 connected those elements in any meaningful or logical way.
An opening sequence introduces young Eden (Kate Moyer), an orphan playing outside her Rylstone, Nebraska group home as her brother haggardly emerges from the nearby cornfield. He chooses a weapon lying about the yard, then promptly murders one of the home’s adult employees, escalating until massive efforts by authorities finally subdue him as Eden remains locked in fear. Writer/director Kurt Wimmer’s recently released take on the Stephen King short story Children of the Corn is described as being a remake, but it’s different enough from the source material and the two previous adaptations – released in 1984 and 2009 – that you could really just call it “another Children of the Corn movie”. But whatever you call it, it went over pretty well with us here at JoBlo / Arrow in the Head. You can read Tyler Nichols’ 8/10 review at This Link, watch his interview with Wimmer and stars Elena Kampouris and Kate Moyer Here, and watch him discuss the film with fellow fan Mike Conway over Here. So we’re glad to share the news that the new Children of the Corn will be receiving a VOD, DVD, and Blu-ray release soon. The VOD release date is the closest; as of March 21st you’ll be able to watch the movie Here.

The new movie is the eleventh overall installment in the long-running franchise, and the first movie in the saga since John Gulager’s Children of the Corn: Runaway in 2018.
In Wimmer’s movie, which is said to have very little to do with King’s novel, “Possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield, a twelve-year-old girl in Nebraska recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who...

Stephen King’s short story “The Children of the Corn” has been catnip to horror filmmakers for nearly fifty years. Originally published in the March 1977 issue of Penthouse, the tale of a quarreling couple who stumble onto a murderous cult of children in a Nebraska cornfield was included the following year in King’s first short story collection Night Shift and subsequently adapted into a 1984 feature film directed by Fritz Kiersch. Night Shift also contains the source material for King classics such as The Mangler, Sometimes They Come Back, Maximum Overdrive, and the upcoming The Boogeyman, but none of the collection’s other 19 stories have had the staying power of “Children of the Corn.” Perhaps due to its evocative title implying barbaric pagan rituals or the eerie juxtaposition between childlike innocence and brutal murder, the original film has spawned eight sequels and two remakes over the course of four decades.

They’re back. Rlje Films presents the Stephen King reboot Children of the Corn by Kurt Wimmer on 500+ screens. It’s a redo of the classic 1984 slasher-horror film about kids possessed by a demonic spirit in a dying cornfield, with bloody, rampaging results.
King’s iconic short story features a 12-year-old Nebraska girl who recruits the kids in her small town for a killing spree of all the adults, and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival. There are some new twists, in Wimmer’s version, the corn is genetically modified. Starring Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey and Bruce Spence.
The story is great, spawning numerous spinoffs beginning with Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice in 1992 followed by Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest in 1995. Most went direct to video.

Having filmed in 2020, it’s surprising that it took so long for us to finally receive the Children of the Corn remake. Usually, when that happens, it spells disaster for the film. But having the seen the film (check out my review here) I can say that it’s very fun and beautifully shot. I know I’m in the minority but I had a blast. So I was absolutely geeked to sit down with director Kurt Wimmer (who made the cult classic Equilibrium) and stars Elena Kampouris and Kate Moyer to discuss this film. I’m already really rooting for this film to find its audience because I genuinely had a lot of fun with it. Check out the interview above!

Plot: The events leading up to, and including, the massacre of the adults of a small town in Nebraska by their children, after the adults’ irresponsibility ruins the crop and the children’s future.
Review: The Children of the Corn series has had a rough go of it over the last few years. Well, I guess you could say it’s pretty much been uneasy going its entire duration, but there’s always been that sliver of hope that something would come along that would finally put it in line with its contemporaries. And, dare I say, Kurt Wimmer has finally accomplished that with his 2023 remake. I know, I know, this sounds absolutely ludicrous after so many years of neglect but Wimmer seems to understand the one thing that’s vital to any reboot: respect.
I feel like I need to establish right from the jump that I’m not...
