Iconic Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki emerged from his self-announced retirement, which began a few years after he made “The Wind Rises” (2013), to tell the autobiographical story of “The Boy and the Heron.” Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki had to reassemble the staff of the production company to complete the task, and the hard work was recognized with the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in March 2024.
The 2023 film added another Oscar to the animation director’s accolades after “Spirited Away” won the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2011. The Academy Award win will send the film back into theaters for a limited time, and fresh off the win at the beginning of March, the film set two different streaming homes depending on where you live.
Those wondering how to watch “The Boy and the Heron” in the meantime can read on for details:

Hayao Miyazaki’s cerebral fantasy film The Boy and the Heron is flying onto Max in the United States after winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar at this year’s awards ceremony. In addition to bringing Miyazaki’s latest breath-taking animated feature to the streaming platform, Warner Bros. Discovery is entering a multiyear pact with GKids to extend Max’s exclusive U.S. film streaming rights for Studio Ghibli.
Per the new deal, Max will be the future home of The Boy and the Heron, with a premiere date to be announced later this year. Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” likely his final film, has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
It’s Miyazaki’s second Oscar after the Japanese animation master won for “Spirited Away” in 2002. Miyazaki is the most nominated director in the Best Animated Feature category (tied with Pete Docter) with four nominations, including for “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “The Wind Rises.” Miyazaki is now also the oldest winner in the category ever, at 83, with the previous record holder being Mark Gustafson for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”
“The Boy and the Heron” beat out an impressive field that included Pixar entry “Elemental,” Neon’s “Robot Dreams,” Netflix’s “Nimona,” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the follow-up to the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” from 2018.

Analysts say The Boy and the Heron could soar to the number one spot this weekend after earning $2.39M in Thursday previews, with a chance to collect $10M+ over the next few days.

Every few years, the Academy tweaks the rules for its animated feature category, with the net result that the nominees tend to skew ever more mainstream. That makes it tough for most of this year’s hopefuls: A record-setting number of animated features submitted. Those who pick the noms are required to watch roughly a third before ranking their top five, which can include additional titles they might have seen on their own. Blockbusters naturally benefit, though “Flee” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” earned nominations in 2022 and 2023, respectively, suggesting that artful indies still stand a chance.

When Hayao Miyazaki pitched “The Boy and the Heron” to Studio Ghibli co-founder/producer Toshio Suzuki in 2016, he asked permission to make the story about himself. This took Suzuki — his friend of nearly 40 years at the time — by surprise; the legendary anime director isn’t known for getting so personal. And yet this aligned perfectly with the notion that Ghibli films are devoted to reliving memories.
“I agree that it is Miyazaki’s most personal film because he actually told me,” Suzuki told IndieWire over Zoom through an interpreter. Not only is “The Boy and the Heron” inspired by Miyazaki’s childhood (he endured the firebombing of Japan during World War II and his father was director of the family’s aircraft manufacturing factory), but also his career at Ghibli with his two closest friends: the late studio co-founder/director Isao Takahata (“Grave of the Fireflies”) and Suzuki.

There's quite a few people out there who still have unfinished business with Joe Goldberg, and one of them is Ellie from season two of "You." On June 17, Netflix released an early teaser video for "You" season five during the streamer's annual Tudum fan event in Brazil. In the video, Penn Badgley hints the show's final season could feature some surprising guest stars - and one of them might just be Jenna Ortega of "Wednesday" fame.
"Hola, Brazil!" Badgley says at the start of the video. "I've heard you're on the edge of your seats waiting and theorizing about the epic conclusion to 'You.' More importantly, you're considering what, or should I say who, Joe will come up against as he finally returns to New York. Though I can't say who just yet, we all know there are many loose ends from Joe's past. The question is, 'Who are you?...

The end is nigh for Joe Goldberg. After four seasons of stalking, killing, and pretentiously monologuing, his reign of terror is almost over. Netflix has renewed "You" for a fifth and final season, putting an end to our obsession with Penn Badgley's bookish serial killer.

"You" season 5 will also mark a change of showrunners. Series co-creator Sera Gamble originally developed "You" with Greg Berlanti and ran the show for its first four seasons. While Gamble will remain involved as an executive producer, she will be stepping back from the final season to work on other projects. In her place, executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will share showrunning duties. In a statement, Gamble said:

This article contains spoilers for "You" on Netflix. Netflix's "You" is a show that's full of dynamic, complicated women, but few characters from past seasons remain on fans' minds quite like Ellie Alves (Jenna Ortega). While sick-but-charming serial killer Joe (Penn Badgley) has a knack for killing all the women he loves most, Ellie is one of the few girls he's crossed paths with who survived their encounter in one piece — though not entirely unscathed.
The last time audiences saw Ellie, the brutally honest teen who lived next door to Joe in Los Angeles, Joe was sending her away with a vague but firm assertion that her older sister Delilah (Carmela Zumbado) wouldn't be coming home. Fans haven't seen so much as a sign of Ellie since, and Ortega's career has exploded with roles in films like "X" and "Scream" and the eponymous role in Netflix's smash hit show "Wednesday.

Some of my favorite episodes of TV in recent years have come from the previous two installments of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival, Carnival of Doom and Curse of the Shadows, so I can't wait to see what spooky surprises are in store for Midnight Society members both old and new in the latest season, Ghost Island. The new members include Kayla; Max; Leo; Summer; and Ferris. Julian Curtis (Wish Man) also stars as Stanley Crane, the hotel manager at the island resort.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island has begun production in the Dominican Republic and will bow later this year on Nickelodeon. It’s from Ace Entertainment.

Instead of coming back to Lifetime for its second season (despite being renewed by the cable network before it even debuted in September), Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble’s new drama “You” will return on Netflix.
No premiere date has been set for Season 2 of the Penn Badgley-led series. The first year of the drama will be made available on the streamer Dec. 26.

Lifetime’s drama You is moving to Netflix for its upcoming second season. The streaming giant already had international distribution for the Berlanti Prods. psychological thriller, whose first season will air as a Netflix original outside of the U.S.. It launches Dec. 26. Starting with Season 2, You will be a Netflix global original.
Lifetime renewed You, starring Penn Badgley and Elizabeth Lail, for a second season in July, ahead of the series’ September premiere. At the time, Netflix already had been on board as an international partner, and I hear the early renewal was done with a move to the Internet network as a possible option. You, developed by Sera Gamble and Greg Berlanti based on the book by Caroline Kepnes, garnered strong reviews but couldn’t attract wide linear audience on Lifetime. Meanwhile, its heavily serialized nature makes it very suitable for binging on a streaming platform. That also...

The second season of “You” will not be airing on Lifetime.
The drama series will return for its second season on Netflix instead, with the first season to be made available on the streamer beginning on Dec. 26. A premiere date for the second season has not been set. The move comes despite the fact that Lifetime renewed the series for a second season before the Season 1 premiere in September.
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, “You” follows a brilliant bookstore manager who crosses paths with an aspiring writer. Using the Internet and social media as his tools to gather the most intimate of details and get close to her, a charming and awkward crush quickly becomes obsession as he quietly and strategically removes every obstacle — and person — in his way.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Bluebeard’s Castle,” the first season finale of “You.”
On Lifetime’s “You,” Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) past has come back to haunt him — just in time for the show to take its hiatus between seasons.
At the end of the first season, showrunner Sera Gamble opted to bring Joe’s ex Candace (Ambyr Childers) walking through the doors of his bookstore, very much alive and very much to the surprise of Joe himself. This was a major plot deviation from Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name, on which the show has been based. The novel ends with Joe finding a new object of obsession in the form of a young woman named Amy.
“The philosophy is always to remix the books in a way that makes emotional sense,” Gamble tells Variety. “The way you feel when you read the books,...

As the film world’s awards season heats up, audiences are already anticipating new projects starring Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Toni Collette, Michael Douglas, and Benicio del Toro.
Of course, all of those projects happen to be TV series, and they’re part of what’s shaping up to be perhaps the most ambitious fall TV season ever. A lot has been made of TV’s current reboot/remake/reunion culture, and that’s definitely a trend this fall. Some of the season’s most anticipated new shows include CBS’ return to “Murphy Brown,” and what ABC has in store for “The Conners,” the spin-off of “Roseanne” that comes thanks to Twitter.

Oh, Dan Humphrey, how we've missed you so! Ok, actually, no, Dan Humphrey kind of sucked but Penn Badgley, the actor who played the tortured lonely boy on Gossip Girl, most certainly did not. So much so, that fans of the hit CW series have been dying for Penn's TV comeback since December 2012. Fortunately, thanks to Lifetime's new series You, the wait is finally over. The now-31-year-old will be playing a secret stalker named Joe which, to be fair, is kind of perfect for Penn. After all — major spoiler alert — Dan Humphrey did end up being the mastermind behind Gossip Girl in the end. In addition to Penn, the star-studded cast also includes Elizabeth Lail, Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry, and Pretty Little Liars' Shay Mitchell. Oh, and did we mention a special guest appearance by John Stamos? Swoon! You can check out the trailer for You below.
