Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for the Pachinko Season 2 finale.
With all eight episodes of Pachinko Season 2 now streaming, the ambitious Apple TV+ production has put another sweeping season of the family saga under its belt.
Stakes were raised as the story focused on the coming of age of the second generation of Sunja’s (Minha Kim and Youn Yuh-jung) family and the impact of World War II. Noa (Tae Ju Kang) takes his life into his own hands after learning a secret that has threatened his identity since his birth. Creator Soo Hugh and executive producers Blue Marble Pictures CEO Theresa Kang and Media Res CEO Michael Ellenberg are eagerly looking ahead to a third and final season to wrap up the story.

There’s much sadness that hangs heavy over Koya Kamura’s Winter in Sokcho. Soo-Ha (Bella Kim) leads an unobtrusive life in the sleepy seaside town of Sokcho. She is a skivvy at a small hotel, Blue House. She’s super-diligent at her job but seems hollowed out by a sustained, numbing grief. She is looking for answers, which her mother is more eager to obscure.
She’s got a partner but her interest in him has dissipated. She proceeds through the motions of the day phantom-like, uncomplaining and deeply sunk in a torpor of soul. It’s when a French traveller lands at the doorstep of the hotel, a renowned comics writer Yan Kerrand that something profound shifts within Soo-Ha.
Kamura tells the story with tenderness and ache. It’s so subdued it’s almost like a whisper. The film demands a gentle immersion. You may get restless and...

The “Top Chef” final four contestants left Wisconsin and flew down to Curaçao last week in “Set Sail,” and they promptly boarded a cruise ship for their final challenges. In the end, Savannah Miller and Laura Ozyilmaz were the bottom two chefs, with Laura ultimately eliminated and Savannah eking out a spot in the final three with Danny Garcia and Dan Jacobs. None of them had their best day in the kitchen that day, but that doesn’t matter now. It all comes down to one final cook to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money. So what went down in the season 21 finale “Cruising to a Win”?
The finale begins with a stop in Aruba, where the final three are greeted by host Kristen Kish and judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. “It all boils down to this,...

“Top Chef” cheftestant and “Top Chef France” alum Kevin D’Andrea was eliminated last week in the ballpark-inspired “Sausage Race” challenge, leaving nine cheftestants on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Soo Ahn, Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner and Michelle Wallace.
So what happened when those cheftestants reached the famous — or infamous — “Restaurant Wars” in season 21, episode eight?
The episode begins with ominous music and black cars on the road. “I don’t know where the Gps is set to, but I know the area where it’s set to,” says native Wisconsinite Dan. “It’s right on the lake. There are so many things that this could be.” They arrive at Discovery World and find host...

Early “Top Chef” favorite Rasika Venkatesa was eliminated last week in the aptly titled “Chaos Cuisine,” leaving 10 cheftestants on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Soo Ahn, Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Kevin D’Andrea, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner and Michelle Wallace.
So what happened in episode seven, “Sausage Race”?
“It feels weird not having Rasika here,” says Danny, who has found a new running buddy in Savannah. Rasika was sent home last week in a result that was pretty shocking because she and fellow bottom chef Michelle have been two of the strongest, most consistent chefs of the entire competition thus far. “I felt like I was going home,” Michelle admits. Being in the bottom is “a kick in the ass.

An early notable of this year’s Berlin lineup is A Traveler’s Needs, the latest from Hong Sang-soo. No surprise he’s appearing at the festival for the fourth consecutive year, but this one bears special anticipation for reuniting him with Isabelle Huppert and––not nothing!––boasting a longer-than-usual shooting schedule. Ahead of a premiere this month, we have a first clip of the titan taking one small step for man and an indeterminately sized leap for mankind.
Here’s the characteristically spare synopsis: “She came from France. She was playing a child’s recorder in a park. With no means of supporting herself she was advised to teach French. She became a teacher to two women. She likes to lie down on rocks and rely on makkeolli for comfort.”

It's fair to say that the world is ready to see more of Stephanie Hsu. Following her success with "Everything Everywhere All at Once", the actor has taken on several new projects, including the Disney+ series "American Born Chinese" and the raunchy comedy "Joy Ride," which she stars in alongside "Emily in Paris" star Ashley Park.
The film, which hit theaters on July 7, centers around a lawyer named Audrey (Park) who travels to China with a group of her closest friends in search of her birth mother. The unapologetic, hilarious nature of the flick gave Hsu a chance to do something outside her normal bubble, which was a thrill to experience, according to the actor. "It felt so exciting to get to do what we never get to do, which is to be completely unhinged, disgusting, grotesque, chaotic, wild, but still so full of heart," she explained in a July 2023 interview with Elle.

Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

At this year’s Tony Awards, there are three actresses in contention for two separate performances in two separate productions they’ve appeared in this past season. They are Carolee Carmello, Crystal Lucas-Perry, and Phillipa Soo. Will any of them land at least one Tony nomination on May 2? Let’s go over each of the three.
Back in the fall, Carmello played John Dickinson in a limited run of Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of “1776.” Now she’s playing the wicked stepmother in Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s newest musical, “Bad Cinderella.” Carmello has been nominated three times before. First in 1999 for the original production of “Parade,” then in 2006 for “Lestat,” and in 2013 for “Scandalous.”
As she is on the ballot for Best Featured Actress in a Musical twice, it’s possible she could split her support in the nominating process. However, what could hurt her more from getting nominated...

There was a moment I knew much was going wrong with Aaron Sorkin's musical bookwriting debut with the "Camelot" Broadway revival. It arrives when Phillipa Soo groans at the title number "Camelot" with an attitude that reads "Is this guy seriously doing a musical number?"
Yet, the same scene builds to a realization that Sorkin's penmanship can go right. It's when the young King Arthur (Andrew Burnap) persuades his arranged betrothed, Guenevere (Soo), of a risky experiment: "Together we may discover if power might be harnessed as a force of good." The promise of this experiment persuades the skeptical princess that her marital purpose might yield a net gain — as long as she doesn't over-test her obligations.
Those aware of "Camelot" and its often-adapted legend source material (credited to T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" in this case) know that the burgeoning passions between Guenevere and the...

With each episode, the intensity of “Queenmaker” ramps up. When we first began this show, the politics went way over our heads, but we suggest sticking with it because the further we go, the darker it gets. It is quite common in K-dramas to add shock value; it is the drama that we’re looking for after a hard day’s work, but one particular scene in episode 6 will definitely catch you off guard. Let’s quickly get into everything that goes down in episodes 5 & 6 of “Queenmaker.”
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In ‘Queenmaker’ Episodes 5 & 6?
We left off with Assemblywoman Seo and Kyung-Sook about to begin their debate. Seo is already riled up from all the information that Do-Hee has leaked about her personal expenditures. She attacks the rhino (Kyung-Sook’s given title) by aiming directly for the horn. Kyung-Sook is, of course, prepared for the level of attack thanks to Do-Hee’s preparation.

What’s a Camelot without a little magic?
Aaron Sorkin works up an answer to that question in the new Lincoln Center Theater production of the 1960 Lerner & Loewe musical, and the result is an adaptation that seems at every turn to be pleading its case for its own relevance. Where the West Wing creator conjured a real sort of writerly sorcery in 2018 with his transformation of the beloved property To Kill A Mockingbird into a new, relevant and thrilling stage work, his efforts this time around often seem strained in their attempts to drag Camelot into the 21st Century.
In its way, Camelot, at least as we’ve come to know it until now, is, in its stodgy and fitful way, a musical as emblematic of the 1960s as the more obvious generation-defining theatrical statements of the era (“Gimme a head with hair!”). Camelot, with its “might for right” social...

Slowly but surely, rom-coms are making their comeback on screen. Mostly recently, it comes in the form of The Avenue’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “One True Loves,” starring Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey. And really, Bracey would argue that romances are “some of the best movies you can watch.”
“One True Loves” follows Soo’s character Emma as she grapple with the loss of Jesse (Bracey), and finds love in the form of her childhood best friend Sam (Simu Liu). But, when Jesse suddenly calls her one day after being missing for four years, Emma must choose between her husband and her fiancé. And so, an impossible love triangle ensues.
Bracey may have broken onto the scene in action movies like “Point Break” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” but in the last few years, he’s also solidified himself as a rom-com heartthrob. He starred alongside Emma Watson in Netflix’s “Holidate,...

The film casts two Asian actors in leading parts that were originally written for non-Asian characters in the book. In the conversation, he also discusses love, soul mates, and finding “the one.”

Posted on the day that Chantal Akerman’s masterpiece was announced as the surprise come-from-behind winner of Sight and Sound’s decennial Greatest Films of All Time poll, the original poster for the film racked up close to 3,000 likes on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram (helped perhaps by being paired with this photo of Akerman pensively smoking in front of the same poster back in the day). I have no doubt that any poster for the film posted on that day would have gotten a lot of attention, but I’d like to believe that some of the likes were for the poster itself: unassuming yet elegant (like Jd herself), foregrounding that radically mundane title, and containing nothing surplus to requirements, just Mrs. Dielman at her dining room table, waiting patiently,...

It was recently announced that ever-prolific online content factory Buzzfeed would begin using artificial intelligence technology to generate articles — so can A.I. screenwriting be far behind? Amid a surfeit of production company idents at the outset of “One True Loves,” the presence of Buzzfeed Studios’ logo brings that question to mind; the rigidly generic love story that ensues keeps it there. In fact, this adaptation of a 2016 bestseller by Taylor Jenkins Reid (“Daisy Jones & The Six”) was scripted by the author herself, in collaboration with her husband Alex. There’s scant evidence of personal investment, however, in this clean, anodyne drama of messy romantic conflicts, in which everyone from director Andy Fickman to stars Simu Liu, Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey is working in strict get-the-job-done mode.
The bland proficiency on display throughout “One True Loves” is galling in a story that calls for ripe emotional excess, conceived...

Simu Liu may be starring in one of the biggest movies of 2023, but no one will mistake “One True Loves” for that honorific. But, somehow, this rom-com adaptation is more plastic than “Barbie.”
Liu leads “One True Loves,” the big screen adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2016 novel of the same name. Liu is Sam, a high school music teacher who finally lands the woman of his dreams, childhood crush Emma (Phillipa Soo). The only issue? Emma’s first husband Jesse (Luke Bracey) was presumed dead after a fatal helicopter crash, and miraculously is rescued four years later, proving to be alive and very ready to rekindle his relationship with Emma right before her wedding to Sam.
If the premise sounds like the stuff of beach reads, it is. The Reid cinematic universe is rapidly expanding, with Prime Video series “Daisy Jones & the Six” having gone viral and fans...

You might have thought the Marvel Cinematic Universe peaked with “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), but the extended universe ruled by Kevin Feige has reached yet another impressive milestone. On Tuesday, Angela Bassett became the first actor in an MCU film to earn an Academy Award nomination for their performance.
Bassett, who previously received a Best Actress nod for her portrayal of Tina Turner in 1993’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her commanding turn as Wakanda’s Queen Ramonda, the indomitable mother of T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) and Shuri (Letitia Wright), in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The film, which was directed by Ryan Coogler and follow’s Shuri’s emotional journey as she becomes the new Black Panther in the aftermath of T’Challa’s death, was a touching, exciting follow-up to 2018’s “Black Panther,” the first and only MCU film to...
