Films are available. Then they aren't. Entire film series can be accessed on one day, and then are nowhere to be found the next. The tides roll in, the tides recede. The sun rises, the sun sets. So it goes with streaming.
Thanks to the Writers Strike of 2023, and the revelation that exclusive in-studio streaming services aren't an entirely viable business model, it's become more important than ever to keep tabs on what might be available on notable services in any given week. Sadly, no streaming service purports to be a permanent archive of film and TV, and even the most deeply branded properties are now being shopped around outside of their home studios; to some, it may feel strange that "Merry Little Batman" debuted on Prime Video rather than the expected Warner Bros.-owned Max streaming service. It seems that the most logical way streaming services can move forward...

Shaken, stirred, or even streamed, spy movies make up many of the most exciting, edge-of-your-seat stories the movies have to offer. From the harrowing heights of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise to the suave savvy of six James Bonds, espionage has become the thematic ground on which some of cinema’s most epic dramas, thrillers, and comedies are built. Even films primarily centered on other subject matter make frequent use of spy drama beats, proving it’s a bedrock source for onscreen entertainment.
The espionage genre is as old as filmmaking itself with silent spy movies set against the backdrop of World War I (1914’s “The German Spy Peril” is on YouTube) testing the medium’s limitations early in the 20th century. Literary works inspired many more of the spy movies to follow. Over the years, filmmakers have repeatedly adapted the works of John le Carré, Robert Ludlum, Ian Fleming, and...

On Tuesday, the world lost an icon in the legendary performer, civil rights activist, and humanitarian Harry Belafonte. The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner passed away at the age of 96. After starting his career in his native New York City as a jazz singer in the late 1940s and early ’50s, often backed by the likes of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Max Roach, he released his first hit song “Matilda” in 1953. Then, a year later, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for “John Murray Anderson’s Almanac.” His first album “Calypso” was released in 1956 and brought unquestionably the most enduring song of his career, “Day-o (The Banana Boat Song).”
Belafonte went on to regularly perform with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas throughout the years while also transitioning to the screen. During the 1950s, he starred in such films as “Carmen Jones,” “Island in the Sun,...

Photo: 'BlacKkKlansman'/Focus Features Could you ever envision a movie about the KKK that is genuinely humorous while not discounting the depth of its ugly history? Only Spike Lee could make such a movie with this perfect delicate balance, and it finally earned him his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, after five prior nominations. BlacKkKlansman is adapted from Ron Stallworth’s memoir of a similar name. It features John David Washington, of 'Tenet' fame, as Ron Stallworth, a Colorado police officer infiltrating the KKK as part of an undercover police investigation. He establishes his membership with the KKK on the phone while his Jewish white-passing colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) represents him in physical meetings. This ended up being John David Washington’s breakout role, who is the son of superstar Denzel Washington. Since his directorial debut, She’s Gotta Have It in 1986, Spike Lee has been a long-time Hollywood staple. His films, known as “Spike Lee Joints”, are well-regarded for their deep exploration of themes such as race relations, colorism, and urban life. Certain aspects of cinematography, such as long dolly shots, also appear often in Spike Lee Joints and grant a consistent style to his filmography. His latest release, BlacKkKlansman, starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, was released in 2018 and tells the true story of Colorado Springs’ first black detective, Ron Stallworth, as he infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards returned to television Monday, with host Zachary Levi and a number of pop culture favorites.
Dominating this year’s nominations with four apiece were front runners “Avengers: Endgame,” which took home the evening’s best movie award, and “Game of Thrones,” which won best show. The Oscar-nominated documentary “Rbg” also scored four nods but was overtaken by the evening’s best documentary winner “Surviving R. Kelly.”
This year’s show also featured three new categories: reality royalty (“Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta”), most meme-able moment (“The Bachelor”) and best real-life hero (Ruth Bader Ginsburg) in addition to the show’s new tradition — started in 2017 — which refrains from separating nominees by gender.
Additionally, Dwayne Johnson was honored with the Generation Award, and Jada Pinkett Smith took home the Trailblazer Award.

“Game of Thrones” and “Avengers: Endgame” took home the top prizes at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday.
The final season of HBO’s fantasy epic came into the night tied for the most nominations with the Marvel superhero team-up and the documentary “Rbg,” but ultimately lost out in a few categories to a pair of “Avengers” stars, “Captain Marvel” actress Brie Larson and “Endgame” star Robert Downey Jr.
Other winners included Sandra Bullock for her “frightened” performance in Netflix’s “Bird Box,” the kiss shared between “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” co-stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo and “A Star Is Born” star Lady Gaga.
As previously announced, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was honored with the “Generation” Award at the Zachary Levi-hosted show, while Jada Pinkett Smith took home the “Trailblazer” Award.

The 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards were presented on Monday night, June 17, during a ceremony held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, and hosted by Zachary Levi. So who were the big winners? Scroll down for the complete list, updating live as they’re announced.
MTV has been giving out their fan-voted Golden Popcorn trophies since 1992, when James Cameron‘s blockbuster “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” was awarded Best Movie. For more than two decades these kudos only considered achievements on the big screen, but in 2017 TV shows were added to the mix. Now there are separate categories for Best Movie, Best Performance in a Movie, Best Show and Best Performance in a Show, while other categories mix all achievements together.

Robert Downey Jr. launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe 11 years ago with “Iron Man” (2008). Is he about to take a victory lap at the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards? He’s nominated for Best Hero for his capstone performance in “Avengers: Endgame,” and if he wins it would be his first competitive victory as an individual actor.
This is Downey’s ninth MTV Movie and TV Award nomination. He has received all of those bids in the last 10 years thanks mostly to his career-defining role as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark aka Iron Man. But he has only won one competitive award at these kudos. He claimed Best Fight in 2013 alongside his fellow “Avengers” Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner for fighting off an alien invasion led by Tom Hiddleston. Two years after that he was awarded the honorary Generation Award for his career achievements. But he...

“Ruth Bader Ginsburg leads the MTV Movie and TV Awards nominations” was not a sentence I expected to write today or ever, but indeed she does. The documentary about her life and career, “Rbg,” has a field leading four nominations, which ties it with “Avengers: Endgame” and “Game of Thrones” as the top contender at these kudos, which will air on Monday night, June 17, at 9:00pm Eastern and Pacific.
“Endgame” earned bids for Best Movie, Best Hero (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Villain (Josh Brolin) and Best Fight (Chris Evans vs. Brolin). That’s one more nomination than “Infinity War” received last year: that movie was up for Movie, Villain and Fight, but didn’t win anything. Marvel was still well represented, though, as “Black Panther” was the 2018 champ for Best Movie. The first “Avengers” won three awards including Best Movie, so this would be a nice bookend for the franchise.

With four nods each, HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” and Magnolia Pictures’ “RBG” are tied for most nominations at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
The final season of “Game of Thrones” is nominated for Best Show for the third year in a row, along with Best Hero for Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Best Fight for Arya Stark vs. the White Walkers and Best Performance in a Show for Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen.
“Avengers: Endgame” followed suit, with nominations for Best Movie, Best Fight, some love for Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man with a Best Hero nod, and Josh Brolin as Thanos getting a shout-out for Best Villain.

Two of this year’s biggest pop-culture entities, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Game of Thrones,” led the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards nominations.
This year’s show will feature three new categories: reality royalty, most meme-able moment, and best real-life hero. And continuing the precedent set in the 2017 show, the awards will not separate nominees by gender.
Marvel’s box office behemoth “Avengers: Endgame” dominated on the film front with four nominations, including best movie. The Oscar-nominated documentary “Rbg,” a touching non-fiction film about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, nabbed four nods: best movie, most meme-able moment, best fight, and real-life hero.

Christopher Nolan has cast BlacKkKlansman's John David Washington in a lead role for his next mysterious project.
We still don’t know the basic concept, the genre, or even the title of Christopher Nolan’s next film, or as Warner Bros. insists “event,” but we now know who appears to be the lead! Variety was the first to report that John David Washington, the breakout star of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman last year, has been cast in a nondescript role in the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie.
The picture will be Nolan’s first since Dunkirk, a rather experimental war film that netted Nolan his first Best Director nomination from the Oscars and more impressively earned more than $500 million at the height of summer 2017 without featuring any superheroes or barely even dialogue. The new movie was previously and cryptically announced when WB planted a flag on a July...

History was made over and over again at the 2019 Oscars (check out the complete list of winners here). “Black Panther” champs Ruth E. Carter (Best Costume Design) and Hannah Beachler (Best Production Design) became the first black winners in their respective categories. “Roma” became the first Mexican winner for Best Foreign Language Film. The directors of “Free Solo” and “Bao” joined a short list of Asian filmmakers to win Best Documentary Feature and Best Animated Short, respectively. Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), the son of Egyptian immigrants, was the first Best Actor winner in history of Arab descent.

Shaking off widespread condemnation of a pair of key decisions that were later reversed, the Academy certainly could not bear any additional criticism. Especially not another #OscarsSoWhite backlash about the lack of diversity among this year’s nominees and winners. Luckily, compared to the previous 90 Academy Awards ceremonies, it made progress on both fronts: This year’s list of Oscar nominees represented one of the most diverse in Academy history; and with people of color winning in at least 10 categories, including the majors, the 2019 event sent the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag on a well-deserved vacation, however shortlived.
A diversity highlight of the evening was for three of the four acting categories to go to actors of color, a very rare occurrence: Rami Malek, Regina King, and Mahershala Ali.

The backstage press corps here at the Oscars had questions for Spike Lee after his reaction to Green Book winning Best Picture on Sunday night.
Asked backstage at the Dolby Theatre if his Adapted Screenplay win for BlacKkKlansman makes up for Do the Right Thing loss at the 1990 Oscars and the Academy overlooking it for a Best Picture nomination, Lee quipped in reference to that year’s Driving Miss Daisy Best Picture win: “I’m snake bit. Every time somebody is driving somebody, I lose – but they changed the seating arrangement!”
Pressed again about his sore-loser response in the theater after Green Book was announced as the winner, Lee responded, “Oh wait a minute, what reaction did you see? What did I do?” he continued. “No, I thought I was courtside at the [Madison Square] Garden. The ref made a bad call.”

You know it’s a surprise when The Favourite‘s Olivia Colman is an underdog winner for Best Actress and Glenn isn’t even Close. In a night that spread the Oscar wins across the board — Bohemian Rhapsody with four, and three each for Green Book, Roma and Black Panther, Colman’s shock was evident as she went on stage while fighting back tears: “It’s genuinely quite stressful.” After gaining some composure, she noted, “My kids are at home and watching — well if you’re not then, well, kind of well done. But I sort of hope you are. This is not going to happen again.”
Close had been considered the frontrunner after first winning at the Golden Globes in January for her role in The Wife and then winning both a SAG Lead Actress trophy from her peers and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress a day earlier.

Spike Lee brought the Oscars audience to its feet after winning his first Academy Award for adapting BlacKkKlansman from Ron Stallworth’s memoir about a black police detective who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan.
Lee shares the award with co-writers Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz and Kevin Wilmott.
After accepting the Oscar from frequent collaborator, Samuel L. Jackson, Lee delivered an impassioned speech about the journey of African-Americans in the U.S. He noted that February is Black History Month and said it has only been a few generations since members of his own family were enslaved.
“From 1619 to 2019, 400 years, 400 years that our ancestors were stolen from mother Africa and brought to Jamestown, Virginia enslaved,” Lee said. “Our ancestors worked the land, can’t see the morning, can’t see at night.”

For those of you that missed the start of Spike Lee’s speech after he won Best Adapted Screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman,” — which was everyone who watched the Oscars on TV, since his initial remarks were bleeped out — yep, he swore.
But it’s just because he wanted to make sure he had time to say his whole statement.
“Do not turn that motherf—ing clock on,” Lee shouted.
Lee then read his prepared statements, an expressly political call to action which included: a reminder to the audience that this year is the 400th anniversary of when slaves first arrived in Virginia from Africa; noting that February is both Black History Month, and the shortest month of the year; and a plea for people to vote in 2020 — you can guess what his preferred outcome is.

At long last, Spike Lee finally has his Oscar. The writer and director of “BlacKkKlansman” took home the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay Sunday night, marking the beloved filmmaker’s first Oscar win. The movie was nominated for six awards at the 2019 ceremony; three of those nods go directly to Lee, as the film was up for Best Picture and Best Director. Adam Driver was also up for Best Supporting Actor.
After vigorously embracing presenting Samuel L. Jackson in his vibrant purple suit, Lee got political in his acceptance speech: “The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. With wins by Regina King, Ruth Carter, Hannah Beachler, Mahershala Ali, Peter Ramsey, Spike Lee and Kevin Willmott, this year’s Academy Awards is a historic one for black talent. No other year in the history of the Oscars has netted as many as six black winners.
