Traditionally, the concept of "the monster under the bed" is seen as a universal childhood fear, the most prominent example of our collective primal fear of the dark. For boys and young men, this mythical creature is typically seen as something to conquer, to stand up to. As fantasy, horror, and genre fiction continue to mutate into phases of postmodernism, this trope has expanded, where the monster isn't necessarily a threat to be subdued but rather a secret, special friend.
But what does this creature signify for girls and young women? If the horrific version represents the encroaching world of the patriarchy, might a cuddlier version see such a creature take the form of a confidant, companion, and protector? Where would he (assuming they're male) fit amongst the horror movie trope of survivor women being "paired" with their supernatural counterpart — is there something between "La Belle et la Bête" and...

If Ann Landers had it right, and hanging on to resentment amounts to letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head, then “Your Monster” is what happens when you kick open the door and let those feelings run amok. Drawing from personal experience, writer-director Caroline Lindy delivers a clumsy metaphor of a movie, in which a promising young actor named Laura Franco (“In the Heights” star Melissa Barrera) has her Broadway dreams derailed by a cancer diagnosis, only to discover a ferocious inner strength, courtesy of the beastly creature she finds hanging around her childhood home.
In what amounts to a heavy-handed empowerment tale, the monster in question is at first a surly roommate, later a potential love interest and ultimately a manifestation of Laura’s long-suppressed sense of rage. The symbolism isn’t exactly subtle as Laura learns to break free of her polite good-girl upbringing and embrace those roiling emotions.

There was a first on Wheel of Fortune during Sweethearts Week in the February 16 episode: the first same-sex couple to compete as a team. Charlie and Kelly got off to a good start, guessing the first puzzle — “Royal Wedding” — right and earning 1000. Then came their introduction, with Charlie introducing himself and his husband and noting it was an honor to be on Wheel during its 40th anniversary on love week since they were celebrating 25 years of being together. Kelly then added that their poodle was home watching. “We love her to death. We take her everywhere,” he said. Host Pat Sajak then asked their poodle’s other favorite shows. The answer? Jeopardy! He then checked Kelly didn’t have anything else to say since he’d interrupted him (he didn’t) before moving on. The couple also later solved Song Lyrics — “Here’s My Number So Call Me Maybe” — correctly and entertained with the answer.

Jane Powell, who starred as an angelically visaged young actress in a number of MGM musicals including “Royal Wedding” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” during the 1940s and 1950s, has died of natural causes. She was 92 years old.
The blonde, blue-eyed Powell usually played characters with a gentle mischievous streak in her musical comedies, but she would shatter the light-hearted atmosphere of her films when she sang: A surprisingly powerful coloratura would emerge from the diminutive (5-feet-1) thesp.
Her producer and mentor was MGM’s Joe Pasternak, who had earlier developed the talents of Deanna Durbin at Universal.
Auditioning for Louis B. Mayer and for David O. Selznick, she quickly drew a seven-year contract with MGM in 1943. Her first film, on loan-out, was 1944 musical “Song of the Open Road,” in which the actress played a child film star who runs away. She took her character’s name, Jane Powell,...

In Broadway history, there have been only a handful of musicals that center on U.S. Latinos, and only a fraction of those shows were written by people from the communities they were portraying on stage. That’s part of the reason why Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” made waves when it opened on Broadway back in 2008 (after a successful Off Broadway run). More than a decade later, and after a slight pandemic delay, Jon M. Chu’s cinematic adaptation of Miranda’s first musical promises to make an even bigger splash with its celebration of family, love, and the idea of home.

He’s an energetic bandleader, she’s his lovelorn singer. Together, they sing and dance their way to the top, with a few bumps along the way! An actor writing a role tailor-made to their strengths isn’t exactly unusual. After all, without Chuckie in “Good Will Hunting,” we wouldn’t be living in a post-Batfleck world. But what Idris Elba has done in “Turn Up Charlie” is different, and not necessarily for the better. In Elba and co-creator Gary Reich’s new Netflix comedy about an aging, down-on-his-luck DJ who nannies his famous friend’s kid, the reigning Sexiest Man Alive incorporates all his lesser-known attributes into one seductive package…

It is interesting this Oscar weekend to reflect on the life and career of the great Stanley Donen who died today at the age of 94. For those nominated tomorrow night who end up losing, don’t despair and just think of Stanley Donen , the director behind the camera on Singin’ In The Rain, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, On The Town, Damn Yankees, The Pajama Game, It’s Always Fair Weather, Royal Wedding, Indiscreet, Charade , Arabesque, Two For The Road, Funny Face, and so many more. He never got a single Academy Award nomination in his career, not one, yet he made so many movies that are the epitome of style , and virtually (with mentors like Gene Kelly in particular) helped to reinvent the movie musical before passing the baton to Bob Fosse ,Rob Marshall, and Damien Chazelle among others all clearly influenced by him in one way or another.

Some directors make their presence felt in every frame of their films, while others operate in service of the stories and the stars.
There is no such thing as an egoless director, but Stanley Donen, who died at age 94, made every effort to efface himself from the picture in order to let a film’s assets shine to their full potential. But even in so doing, he left an undeniable signature on his work — films that radiate with color, and music, and some of the most inventive choreography until Bob Fosse came along in the late ’60s.
While his work hasn’t necessarily been studied to the degree that Hitchcock’s and Hawks’ have, it was Donen who made it possible for Gene Kelly to splash and tap around the lamppost in “Singin’ in the Rain,” he enabled Fred Astaire to dance up the walls and across the ceiling in “Royal Wedding,...

Stanley Donen, the legendary director of musicals and romantic comedies, has died at age 94. He started as a choreographer and dance director before being elevated to director status at MGM, where he brought to the screen some of cinema's greatest musicals. Among his achievements: "On the Town", "Royal Wedding", "Singin' in the Rain", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Kismet", "Funny Face" and "Damn Yankees". As the traditional musical genre started to decline, Donen concentrated on comedies such as "Once More with Feeling", "The Grass is Greener", "Two for the Road" and "Bedazzled". One of his biggest hits was the 1963 comedy thriller "Charade" starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, which can be described as the best Hitchcock movie not directed by Hitchcock. “Our love will last till the stars turn cold.” That line from “Singin’ in the Rain” perfectly sums up the sensibility of its director, Stanley Donen: absolute sincerity wedded to knowing irony. When Gene Kelly’s Don Lockwood says that to Debbie Reynolds’ Kathy Seldon, he’s actually quoting a line from the cornball movie he’s just made with Jean Hagen for which he has contempt: “The Duelling Cavalier.” But what Lockwood comes to recognize is that, polished just right, hokum can be made to sparkle — and can convey genuine feeling. Is “Our love will last till the stars turn cold” silly? Sure. But it’s beautiful too, and who wants to be so cynical as not to recognize that?
Donen, who died February 23 at age 94 after a nearly 70-year career across film and theater, recognized what so few do today: that two seemingly contradictory things can be true at the same time.

Stanley Donen, the deft director of such iconic movie musicals as Singin’ In the Rain, Funny Face, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Charade who helped define Hollywood’s golden age, has died at age 94. The news was confirmed this morning by his son to the Chicago Tribune.
Donen remarkably never won an Oscar for his work, but was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Motion Picture Academy in 1998, “in appreciation of a body of work marked by grace, elegance, wit and visual innovation.” He sang “Cheek to Cheek” with his statuette during his acceptance speech.
Born in Columbia, Sc, Donan was a Broadway dancer and choreographer when he met Gene Kelly while dancing in the chorus of Pal Joey. He eventually moved to Hollywood to dance in MGM musicals, and when he was 19 Kelly got the studio to lend Donen to Columbia Pictures so they could co-choreograph Cover Girl.

Stanley Donen, the former Broadway chorus boy who made a name for himself in Hollywood directing classic musical films like “On the Town” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” has died at age 94.
One of Donen’s sons confirmed the news on Saturday to Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips. A rep for Donen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Donen helped reinvent the big-screen musical, with a series of hits that included 1954’s “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” 1957’s “The Pajama Game,” 1958’s “Damn Yankees!” and 1957’s “Funny Face,” with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
Not only did he integrate song, dance and story in a way that enlivened MGM musicals of the era, but he was also a technical innovator in an era before CGI, as in the memorable scene in 1950’s “Royal Wedding” when Fred Astaire seemed to dance on the walls and ceiling while...

It must really be the magic of that Markle sparkle. Ever since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry went public with their royal romance in 2016, the former Suits star-turned-Duchess of Sussex has become a global style icon. Whether it was their Royal Wedding in May or her first public appearance following the official announcement that the couple was expecting their first child, the world is always waiting to see what ensemble Meghan, 37, will be stepping out in. Sometimes to see if it adheres to royal style protocol, but mostly so they can quickly find it and buy it for themselves. Given her skill at mixing high and low, as well as injecting menswear into some of her official outing looks, Meghan has had a major...

"It's like Bridezilla in reverse!" Netflix has debuted their official trailer for the cheesy romantic comedy A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, a sequel to the film released last year A Christmas Prince. In the first one, a journalist falls in love with the prince and ends up with plans to soon marry him. In this one, with the royal wedding ceremony approaching on Christmas night, she starts to feel unsure and isn't entirely ready to make the leap. All the while, the prince ends up in a political crisis of his own. The Royal Wedding once again stars Rose McIver and Ben Lamb from the first, with a cast including Alice Krige, Richard Ashton, Tahirah Sharif, Joel McVeagh, and Clara Ciobanu. This lead actress reminds me too much of Keri Russell, but no. This looks very sweet and campy, but maybe there's a few good lessons in the film.

While the likes of Marvel and “Star Wars” have dominated the summer movie conversation, Fathom Events has quietly pushed forward with their plans to bring more event cinema to theaters this season, and that is leading to an interesting alliance in the movie theater industry.

“Today” show viewers fell in love with all of that Royal Wedding coverage last week, when the morning news and talk series won the 7 a.m to 9 a.m. hours outright for the first time since NBC’s Winter Olympics from PyeongChang, South Korea.
While “Today” generally tops the key adults 25-54 news demographic, ABC’s “Good Morning America” (“Gma”) tends to draw the largest overall audience. That latter typical Nielsen ranking was not the case last week, however, we’re just learning this morning.
“Today” averaged 4.149 million total viewers from Monday, May 14 through Friday, May 18, just barely edging the “Gma” average of 4.147 million. Yeah, that’s close — the difference represents a mere 2,012 total viewers per day, to be exact.

With the world watching the nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, including nearly 30 million in the U.S., Corden nearly sneezed when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, asked the congregation if they knew of a reason why the couple should not lawfully marry.

Well, at least it wasn’t “The Blacklist” series finale: The season-ending episode of the James Spader drama didn’t quite light things up for NBC at 8 p.m. — neither did a Royal Wedding special at 10.
As a result, NBC dropped from a second-place tie last Wednesday to fourth place this week among adults 18-49. With a lineup of all season (and some series) finales, ABC was able to leapfrog its competitor and claim the key demo’s bronze medal.
“Empire” handed Fox another gold among young(-ish, towards the upper end of that age range, at least) adults. CBS finished first in terms of total viewers.
