Exclusive: Noah Media, producer of Netflix’s 14 Peaks and Sky’s Villeneuve Pironi, has restructured to focus on international docs and laid off a small number of staff.
The London outfit has in the past few months transitioned from a “UK sports-based production company into an international documentary producer,” according to a statement from CEO and co-founder John McKenna.
“This will see us transition from a staff-based to a more freelance-based model, in line with the norm across the factual production space,” said McKenna. “This has unfortunately meant some redundancies in the past few months for some employees we think are fantastic colleagues and people.”
For the year to March 31 2023, Noah had around 45 staff, according to its latest accounts. It will offer “freelance project-specific contracts” for employees who have lost jobs where possible, McKenna added, and he said this has already happened for some of those laid off.

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

For the roughly 100 workers who have recently joined Condé Nast’s “central editorial group,” work has taken a bizarre turn in the past few months.
In November, 94 Condé Union staffers at the glamorous media company behind Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair and Bon Appétit — across editorial, video and audience development — learned that they had been earmarked to be laid off as part of a companywide cost-cutting push. (Workers at Condé Nast titles The New Yorker and Wired belong to separate unions.) But the cuts wouldn’t happen immediately: Because the NewsGuild of New York-affiliated union didn’t yet have its first contract in place, which would include terms and conditions for job cuts, the labor group maintained that the proposed layoffs had to be negotiated as part of the talks over the agreement and the employees remained in limbo at their brands, waiting to learn their fate.

The votes by 19 conservative lawmakers to tank government surveillance legislation on Wednesday was the culmination of a decade of efforts to build a left-right alliance against warrantless spying. The rare setback for the intelligence community may only be temporary, though, and the federal government could soon enjoy far broader surveillance powers.
Fresh off an embarrassing defeat, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has regrouped and is moving to advance the legislation — which would reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — on the House floor again on Friday. Lawmakers will consider one...

Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Batman in the 1989 film and its 1992 sequel remains legendary, but what many don’t realize is that his casting initially sparked major controversy. Batman has always been one of the most beloved characters for comic readers, and making a movie about such a character was a difficult task, to say the least. And when Keaton was cast, people couldn’t envision Gotham City’s protector being entrusted to a comedic actor.
When Tim Burton chose Keaton, many were skeptical and lashed out. However, this decision not only became significant in Batman history but also played a crucial role in Mark Hamill voicing the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series!

Michael Keaton participated in a career retrospective interview for GQ magazine and admitted that his casting as Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 superhero movie was “ballsy” considering he was more known for his comedic roles in films like “Mr. Mom” at that point in his career. Keaton’s casting was met with backlash among comic book fans at the time. The actor had already worked with Burton on 1998’s comedy “Beetlejuice.”
“When they said ‘We’re thinking of doing Batman,’ I said, ‘Wait, you’re thinking of making a movie about Batman?’,” Keaton said. “The fact that Tim said ‘That guy, I want that guy’ … The fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. But that was a ballsy move on his part. We also had a nice working relationship from ‘Beetlejuice,’ so he felt that he and I could get along and would work well together.

Following his massive success and popularity in the first three Star Wars films, he transitioned to voice work, contributing to significant projects like Castle In The Sky, A Fuller Life, and Batman: Mask of The Phantasm.

Interestingly enough, a DC star demanded he be in a Justice League Unlimited reunion project as well, which would have been a great thing considering he portrayed the role of The Joker for so many years.

Hidetaka Miyazaki gave the players Elden Ring in 2022 with the help of George R. R. Martin, who contributed to worldbuilding. Millions of players have delved deeper into the Lands Between and are waiting to enter the Land of Shadow, as was seen in the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer. The world that fans see isn’t simply a result of imagination but also of a fascination with fantasy.
A video game auteur, Miyazaki is known for the difficulty he incorporates in his games alongside the narratives that are largely presented via environmental cues and flavor texts. He wants the players to unfold the story as it suits them rather than following a pre-planned path every time, they begin the game after finishing up.

If you think about it, there’s no better place to premiere “Black Twitter: A People’s History” than at South by Southwest.
The three-part Hulu and Onyx docuseries based on Jason Parham’s similarly titled “Wired” story exists at the perfect intersection of entertainment, internet, and culture — just like SXSW itself.
“When I read the article, it was not only was only something that I love, that I participated in, but I saw the power of it,” director Prentice Penny told IndieWire during the conference. “It was sort of feeling like the way my mother talks about the Civil Rights Movement. That’s what I felt like was happening on Black Twitter.”
Along with being an active platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter user, Penny (whose profile welcomes users with the subhed “Fux Yo Blue Check”) was itching to do something different after “Insecure” — something that scared him.

Prentice Penny had just wrapped the fifth and final season of Issa Rae’s Insecure and was awaiting its release on HBO when Wired senior writer Jason Parham published his definitive “A People’s History of Black Twitter” in July 2021. The three-part, 9,821-word series chronicles the evolution of the nebulous and influential collective of Black users on the platform now known as X, from an inciting event (the hashtag #UKnowUrBlackWhen) to its growing influence and respective backlash through the present.
For Penny, a multihyphenate talent whose work on such series as Insecure and Girlfriends had been elevated and celebrated by Black Twitter, adapting Parham’s articles into a colorful visual history through the documentary medium seemed like an exciting new challenge after spending much of his two decades in TV predominantly in the narrative comedy space with shows including Scrubs, Happy Endings and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Javier Bardem is currently making headlines for his role of Stilgar in Dune: Part Two. The Denis Villeneuve directorial has been getting rave reviews with 94% on the Tomatometer. And one of the positives on the movie is how Bardem plays the fanatic leader of the Fremen, mentoring Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. But with as menacing and zealous his character is in the movie, he is quite the opposite in real life.
Javier Bardem in Dune: Part Two
Bardem broke into the silver screen early on when he was only six years old. Coming from a family that has long been part of the movie industry in Spain, and being the son of the popular Spanish actress, Pilar Bardem, the Skyfall actor initially did not want to become an actor. It wasn’t until his lead role Bigas Luna’s 1992 directorial film, Jamón Jamón, that he started taking acting more seriously.

Like the piscine Guild Navigator who gets wheeled out in a tank at the start of the movie, David Lynch‘s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune is neither fish nor fowl. Lynch gets to play with some rather dense world-building, but Herbert’s critique of charismatic leaders gets pushed to the side while the demands of ’80s sci-fi fantasy don’t allow the director to create what would later become his signature dream states. As a result, Lynch’s Dune pleased no one, least of all Lynch himself. And while the film has its fans, especially in light of Denis Villeneuve‘s more faithful blockbuster, it remains an outlier in both Lynch’s oeuvre and in the history of Dune adaptations.
Still, the legend goes that if studio meddling and post-production issues not come to bear, Lynch would have been able to put more of his stamp on the sequel Dune II.

Too early to call this the discovery of 2024? If we never get another David Lynch movie, series, or short film shot on consumer-grade Dv, this is just about our closest proximity to a fresh vision—also one that’s 40 years old, but sometimes we can’t make the choice between what is future and what is past. In researching his recently published A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune—An Oral History, Max Evry gave himself the unenviable task of finding Lynch’s supposed script for Dune Messiah––“supposed” because its only traces are to be found decades-old interviews, often in promotion of a film that caused so much disturbance to its creator he still speaks of it like… well, like a David Lynch character speaks of the malevolent force that hangs over their every moment. Saying he “wrote half a script” in Lynch on Lynch could’ve meant...

Robert Downey Jr. spilled some tea on the tattoo he shares with the other founding members of the Avengers.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is massive now. However, at the start it centered around his Iron Man, Chris Evans‘ Captain America, Jeremy Renner‘s Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo‘s Hulk and Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor.
If you were unaware, five of the six members of the core cast decided to get a group tattoo after the release of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. The movie was one of the final ones that they all appeared in together, and the tattoo commemorates their bond.
During a segment on Wired, Robert opened up about the tattoo, revealing some additional details. For instance, he confirmed which member of the cast opted out of getting inked and which was seemingly hesitant. He even revealed who was brave enough to go first.

Los Angeles, Dec 7 (Ians) Singer Michael Buble broke his Christmas collaboration rule as he teamed up with Cher for a new version of his 2005 single on her new festive collection, said his usual stance is to reject any offers to duet at this time of year after becoming synonymous with the season following his 2011 album ‘Christmas’.
He’s quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column as saying: “Every late September/October every artist, the ones that you know, the biggest artists in the world, start to call me and say, ‘I have an idea, you and me should make a Christmas…’ And I go, (mimics putting phone down) ‘click’, I say, ‘Thank you so much, I know you’re gonna kill it.’”
“I made one Christmas record, 12 years ago! One!”
He had to make an exception when the pop icon got in touch, reports aceshowbiz.com.
He added: “That changes when Cher calls.

It’s one thing for a person to go off the grid. It’s a whole other story when no one can identify a hiker’s dead body for more than two years.
Director Patricia E. Gillespie explores the mystery of the unidentified man in Max’s upcoming documentary “They Called Him Mostly Harmless,” which made its world premiere on Oct. 8 at the Hamptons Intl. Film Festival.
The unidentified hiker had no ID, phone, credit card, or any way to be identified when police found him deceased in a tent at Florida’s Cypress National Preserve in 2018. The hiker didn’t appear in any missing persons database, and no family members or friends came forward to claim his body. The John Doe soon became known by his trail names — “Ben Bilemy” and “Mostly Harmless.”

Exclusive: Radical, the Mexican true-life drama starring Coda‘s Eugenio Derbez that broke out of Sundance as the 2023 Festival Favorite, has secured a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement that will permit publicity efforts ahead of its October 20 nationwide release, Deadline has learned.
Agreements of the sort do not guarantee actor participation in PR campaigns, only opening up the possibility for it amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike. But Radical is precisely the kind of film that would most benefit from it, as a small, star-driven awards prospect looking to perform at the box office. And it is expected that Derbez now will be out promoting the movie, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Singer Grimes has confronted her former partner, Elon Musk, about his views regarding trans people and their rights.
Musk has made numerous anti-trans comments on X, his platform formerly known as Twitter.
When asked by Wired magazine about Musk’s views on specific issues, Grimes said, “I don’t want to talk about this too much. But take the trans thing. After that, we had a big, long conversation. I was like, ‘I want to dissect why you’re so stressed about this.'”
The singer explained that getting to the root of Musk’s opinions would help her “get to the heart of what other people’s issues are.”
She described his feelings as an “über guy situation.”
“And it came down to pretty much every way that you transition can cause fertility issues,” she concluded about Musk’s views. “He’s unhappy with woke people.”

Jamie Dornan admitted in a new “Wired” video interview (via Insider) that he was “quite jealous” of Robert Pattinson during the early days of their career. Dornan, Pattinson and fellow stars such as Eddie Redmayne and Andrew Garfield all came up together as aspiring young actors in England. Pattinson’s career skyrocketed way ahead of his peers when he was cast as Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” franchise.
“I’ve known Rob forever,” Dornan said. “He’s a really good friend. I love him. I think he’s one of the most investing, exciting actors around. I probably at one point was quite jealous early on. We were all friends back in London and Rob was going places and we weren’t. I think he’s the nicest guy in the world.”
Dornan told Entertainment Tonight in March 2022 that Pattinson’s “Twilight” success drove a minor wedge between him and his fellow U.

There’s a streamer that’s adored by diplomats and by Mormons, by doctors at the Mayo Clinic and by rabid cinephiles. The brand has continually operated under its founder for more than 30 years, and the odds are excellent that you have never, ever heard of it.
One reason you’ve probably never heard of MHz Choice is — with apologies to its founder and operator, Frederick Thomas — its terrible name. He said he chose to call it MHz because it derives from megahertz, or one million hertz, a measure of radio transmission frequencies or a computer’s clock speed. Neither of these things seem to address the MHz mission, which is to stream TV shows and films from 30 international countries.
Thomas founded the company in 1993 as a subsidized public-access channel in Washington DC. Today, it’s a for-profit Kino Lorber joint venture that costs $7.99 per month with more than 2,500 hours of mysteries,...

Director Christopher Nolan is known for his meticulous approach to filmmaking.
That’s why Robert Downey Jr. joked that 2012’s The Avengers would still be filming if Nolan had been at the helm.
In a joint interview for Wired to promote their new film, Oppenheimer, the Iron Man actor and Nolan were asked what 2012’s The Avengers might’ve looked like if Nolan had taken over from the film’s actual director, Joss Whedon.
Downey said the film would still be in production.
Nolan fired back.
“Whoa, that is the multiverse conundrum,” Nolan said. “Having worked with you on Oppenheimer, it’d probably be a lot — too much Tony Stark. You’d be running away with the movie a little bit.”
“Like I didn’t?” Downey shot back.
Nolan laughed, adding, “Even more. And not using CG — would you be prepared to get on one of those jetpacks, the ones they make for real?...

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “Oppenheimer.”]
“Oppenheimer” hinges on the haunting feeling that man-made death is lurking nearby, and yet, the film bungles the “little death” that has been highly anticipated along its press tour.
Writer-director Christopher Nolan said that “Oppenheimer” is his first film across his 25-year career to show sex and sexualized nudity onscreen. “Oppenheimer” landed Nolan’s first R-rating since 2002’s “Insomnia” due to the included nudity. The official Motion Pictures Association rating description lists “some sexuality, nudity and language, with brief scenes of strong sex which include breast and buttock nudity.” Of course, this inevitably led to viral FilmTok and Film Twitter posts anticipating just how “strong” the hyped sultry sequences would be.
The first scene in question features Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy having robotic intercourse after Pugh arches her eyebrow and engages in witty banter at a Communist Party mixer. Pugh portrays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, with Murphy starring as...

James Cameron is doubting the merits of an AI-made film.
The “Titanic” Oscar winner told CTV News that while he “absolutely shares their concern” over the rise of AI, when it comes to the impact of the new technology on Hollywood, Cameron is less worried.
“It’s never an issue of who wrote it, it’s a question of, is it a good story?” Cameron said. “I just don’t personally believe that a disembodied mind that’s just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said — about the life that they’ve had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality — and just put it all together into a word salad and then regurgitate it. I don’t believe that have something that’s going to move an audience.”
Filmmakers like Nicolas Winding Refn, Charlie Brooker, and Joe Russo have all recently addressed working with artificial intelligence during the scriptwriting process.

Robert Pattinson helped inspire Christopher Nolan to helm 'Oppenheimer' - but was too "busy" to star in the film. The pair teamed up on the 2020 sci-fi flick 'Tenet' and despite the movie having a link to the 2023 war biopic, the 37-year-old actor didn't have enough time in his schedule to take on a role in the latter film.Speaking in an interview with Tara Hitchcock, Nolan spilled: “Yeah, Rob, off the back of 'Tenet', where we refer to Oppenheimer, and I had wrote a thing about this incredible moment that Oppenheimer and the scientist of the Manhattan Project had where they could not completely eliminate the possibility that when they triggered that first gadget, that first atomic device, they might start the chain reaction that would destroy the world."However, a special gift he gave the director got him "hooked" on the story of 'Oppenheimer'.

Arnold Schwarzenegger says “The Terminator” is no longer a fantasy given the current state of artificial intelligence. Speaking at a press event in Los Angeles (via People), the actor said James Cameron’s 1984 action classic has now become a reality. The film is set in a world where an artificially intelligent defense network known as Skynet has become self-aware and has conquered humanity.
“Today, everyone is frightened of it, of where this is gonna go,” Schwarzenegger said about AI. “And in this movie, in ‘Terminator,’ we talk about the machines becoming self-aware and they take over… Now over the course of decades, it has become a reality. Boots Riley is sharing his approach to his genre-defying mystical limited series — an anti-capitalist satire — that drops on Prime Video Friday, I’m a Virgo. The Sorry to Bother You director, writer and musician, and vocal supporter of the ongoing writers strike, aims to spur action with his tale of a 13-foot protagonist, played by Jharrel Jerome, who is let out into the world at age 19.
In Riley’s creation of 13-foot-tall Cootie (Jerome), a giant growing up in Oakland who meets a group of teen activists, the director says his creativity uses the absurd to point out the obvious in real-life situations.
“I’m attracted to large contradictions,” Riley told Wired magazine in a recent interview. “I think about what I would think of as a good lyric. There’s this setup, which hopefully is good and says something in and of itself. But then there’s this other...

Christopher Nolan has a warning for anyone purchasing “Oppenheimer” tickets: The film might emotionally destroy you. Speaking to Wired magazine in a new interview, Nolan said that some early “Oppenheimer” viewers have had a visceral reaction to the film, which follows theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) as he creates the atomic bomb to end World War II.
“Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated,” Nolan said about early screenings. “They can’t speak. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the history and there in the underpinnings. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is as strong as I’ve ever done.”
Nolan later added, “It is an intense experience, because it’s an intense story. I showed it to a filmmaker recently who said it’s kind of a horror movie. I don’t disagree.”

“Like it or not,” declared Christopher Nolan at CinemaCon in April, “J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived. He made the world we live in, for better or for worse.”
Nolan expands on those ideas in a cover interview for the new issue of Wired, saying that the importance of Oppenheimer and his story is one reasons people should see his film, which releases on July 21.
The director calls the film a “wild ride,” a reasonable assessment for a life story intertwined with what he sees as “literally the most dramatic moment in history.” He then repeats for emphasis, “In history.”
Asked about AI and newer visions of Armageddon, Nolan tells Wired that he is less worried than most — optimistic, even — calling it a tool that even he, an “old analog fusty filmmaker” would use.

Exclusive: On the heels of his newest feature Radical‘s Festival Favorite Award win at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker Christopher Zalla has inked with Entertainment 360 for management.
Zalla wrote and directed the critically acclaimed drama, based on a 2013 article written for Wired magazine by Josh Davis, which was among the most discussed titles at Sundance 2023. The film is based on the true story of Sergio Juarez Correa (Coda‘s Eugenio Derbez), a teacher in the neglected town of Matamoros, Mexico, who as Zalla notes in his director’s statement, suffered “a mental breakdown” after “increasingly failing to reach his students in each successive year.” When Correa stumbled upon “a new kind of child-directed learning” in a Ted Talk, he decided to try to implement it, in order to turn the situation in his classroom around, to profound results.

Christopher Nolan says he can understand why some might view his upcoming film Oppenheimer, about the race to create the atomic bomb during World War II and the man who led the effort within the U.S., as a “horror movie.”
In Wired’s latest cover story, the Oscar-winning director, writer and producer discussed the significance of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the Manhattan Project, which saw him taking a lead in the research and development of nuclear weapons amid the Holocaust.
At one point, between discussing how artificial intelligence and nuclear advances are different, the ethics of Silicon Valley and why Oppenheimer is “the most important man who ever lived,” Nolan recalled a conversation he had with a fellow filmmaker about the tone of his film.
“It is an intense experience, because it’s an intense story. I showed it to a filmmaker recently, who said it...

Christopher Nolan got honest about artificial intelligence in a new interview with Wired magazine. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker says the writing has been on the wall about AI dangers for quite some time, but now the media is more focused on the technology because it poses a threat to their jobs.
“The growth of AI in terms of weapons systems and the problems that it is going to create have been very apparent for a lot of years,” Nolan said. “Few journalists bothered to write about it. Now that there’s a chatbot that can write an article for a local newspaper, suddenly it’s a crisis.”
Nolan said the main issue with AI is “a very simple one” and relates to the technology being used by companies to “evade responsibility for their actions.”
“If we endorse the view that AI is all-powerful, we are endorsing the view that it can...

Salma Hayek’s always been fearless but there was one role that gave her pause: Herself.
Or at least a comically awful version of herself that she plays in the first episode of “Black Mirror” Season 6, titled “Joan Is Awful.” IndieWire’s Steve Greene called this episode another in “the show’s ‘ripped from the Wired headlines’ approach to technology.” Annie Murphy plays a tech executive who unwittingly gives away her life rights via the terms and conditions she failed to read (as we all do) for an app called Streamberry.
The app pulls enough data to reconstruct Joan’s life via AI, and it becomes a TV show starring Salma Hayek playing Joan. Yes, Hayek is playing herself, an actor who’s taken the part of playing Joan.
But of course this is a very, very heightened version of Salma Hayek. “I got to explore the concepts and clichés...

London, June 20 (Ians) Tech giant Apple is reportedly trying to gain intellectual property (IP) rights over depictions of apples, the fruit, which has left a fruit farmer’s organisation in Switzerland worried.
According to a report in Wired, the Fruit Union, the oldest and largest fruit farmers’ organisation in Switzerland, is concerned that it may have to change its logo because the iPhone maker is attempting to secure IP rights for “a realistic, black-and-white depiction of an apple variety known as the Granny Smith”.
“Their objective here is really to own the rights to an actual apple, which, for us, is something that is really almost universal that should be free for everyone to use,” Fruit Union Suisse director Jimmy Mariethoz was quoted as saying.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s records, Apple has made similar requests to dozens of IP authorities around the world.
