Kenny Rogers, whose music went beyond the country music genre he is known for, died at home in Sandy Springs, Ga., Friday night, according to the New York Times. He was 81.
“The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25Pm at the age of 81,” his family said in a statement to Twitter. “Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family.”

Ahead of the Chemical Brothers’ headlining gig at Glastonbury, the electronic duo have released their new video for “Eve of Destruction,” the opening track off their recent album No Geography.
In the spirit of the legendary Japanese sci-fi series Ultraman, the “Eve of Destruction” video, directed by the duo’s longtime visual collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall, features an army of elaborately dressed superheroes and villains in Dyi outfits duking it out to the Chemical Brothers’ frenzied beat.

Give it up for the Chemical Brothers. Genres and trends come and go, festival gods rise and fall. Yet Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons stay eternally true to their block rocking vision. The duo has now outlasted two stupidly-named marketing gimmicks designed to sell dance music to normals: electronica (which they sort of helped invent in the Nineties) and Edm (which they’ve admirably ignored throughout the last decade). Their last album, 2016’s Born in the Echoes, stuck with a formula that’s worked for them for a quarter century:...

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry recruited Cheap Trick singer Robin Zander, Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo and Stp bassist Robert DeLeo for a rattling live version of “Aye, Aye, Aye” filmed at L.A.’s Roxy Theatre in January.
Perry commands the track with a handful of bluesy riffs and solos, and Zander pushes his vocal range by howling the main hook. Drummer David Goodstein and keyboardist Buck Johnson (Aerosmith) also accompanied Perry on the song, a highlight from his sixth solo LP, the January-issued Sweetzerland Manifesto.

Yale Udoff, screenwriter for the Nicolas Roeg movie “Bad Timing” as well as episodes of “Tales from the Crypt” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” died of cardiac arrest as a result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on July 19 at Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, Calif. He was 83.
The 1980 drama “Bad Timing” starred Art Garfunkel, Theresa Russell and Harvey Keitel. It film became a part of the Criterion Collection in 2005. He was also co-writer on the 1991 “Eve of Destruction” with Gregory Hines.
He began his career at CBS in New York, working with fellow producers Douglas Cramer, Edgar Scherick and Roone Arledge. While spending a career highlighting some of U.S. history’s most notable figures — Jackie Robinson, the Roosevelts, Jack Johnson — Ken Burns has also undercut the idea of the “ordinary American.” Not only finding worthy stories in the lives of titanic men and women who still loom large over the public consciousness, he’s been able to elevate lesser-known individuals from the respective histories of baseball, the Civil War, jazz, and more, showing that those eras and institutions were also shaped by people less often regarded as heroes.
The great equalization of the past is on display once again in Burns’ and co-director Lynn Novick’s “The Vietnam War,” a mammoth, 18-hour history told through and by members from both sides of the ill-fated conflict. Journalists and soldiers, government officials and Gold Star families all add to an understanding of Vietnam, presented without varnish or favoritism. A tale for modern audiences,...

Since the Rebirth era kicked off last summer, one of the biggest mysteries it’s yielded has been that of the identity of the shadowy Mr. Oz. Many readers have theorized him to be Ozymandias of Watchmen fame, a fire that the conclusion to “The Button” added fuel to. One thing, however, has remained certain: The hooded fellow has a vested interest in Superman.
And while we may not learn who he really is until Doomsday Clock hits stands this November, it looks like we’ll at least get something worthwhile this August in the pages of Action Comics when “Mr. Oz makes his final move against the Man of Tomorrow.” Oddly enough, this arc won’t be penned by fan favorite Dan Jurgens, but rather, Rob Williams, whom we already know to be taking the reins of Trinity that very month. Whether the switch is permanent or Jurgens is...

5.12 Into The Schwarzwald
This week Grimm hit its much talked-about 100th episode, and in the main, it didn’t disappoint.
Show creators Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt had previously teased a big reveal to the four-and-a half-season-long storyline involving those damn keys, but they were still in no hurry to reveal their secrets.
As a result we see Nick and Monroe overcome one obstacle after another in their search to locate the buried treasure. In the style of the best Indiana Jones outings, the two have to deal with underground catacombs, piles of ancient bones, and figure out a secret marker to the treasure before finally uncovering the mysterious chest of secrets. (Because it’s Grimm though, they also have to escape an angry German...

5.10 Map Of The Seven Knights
Road trip!
Yes it looks like the Grimm gang is finally off on a European adventure after they discover a series of mysterious links back to the old country.
Well, the links are actually the long-forgotten keys from season one, now that the writers seem to have remembered they exist. They were part of an important thread at the time, so we should be grateful that the story is being picked up again, even if it’s all still quite fuzzy at the moment. Essentially, they're a set of keys that produce a map to a place where something – no-one knows what – is buried. But let’s assume whatever it is, is really important.

Grimm ratchets up the horror in this week's season 5 episode, with some distressing scenes of torture...

5.9 Star Crossed
Grimm’s fifth season continued its descent into darker territory this week.
Alongside a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how Hadrian’s Wall operates, a Wesen storyline that fits well into the show’s main story arc and a potential jab at modern politics, we were also witness to some previously unseen levels of horror.
We are given a glimpse of how Meisner, Trubel and Eve have been working as a team to counter the threat of Black Claw. They each bring something different to the fight – whether that’s martial arts prowess, combat skills or mad telekinesis combined with a disconcerting lack of empathy – they get the job done. With its bunker HQ and latest surveillance technology it almost feels like a Hadrian’s Wall spin-off...

Last week Grimm returned with a bang.
This week, A Reptile Dysfunction (yep, comedy gold there) finds us back on more familiar ground, with the writers deciding they don’t want to jump wholeheartedly into the show’s biggest storyline to date just yet.
So while more information about Black Claw’s monstrous activities comes to light, the show clutches onto the comfort blanket that is a Wesen-of-the-Week story, which while mildly entertaining, served as little more than a distraction from the darker and much more interesting events that are unfolding from the Wesen Uprising.
This week involves a river monster called a Wasser Zahne that is hired by a couple of Luisant-Pêcheur (otter-like creatures acting out of character here) to exploit an old Loch Ness Monster-style myth in order to drum up business for their lakeside business. This inevitably goes wrong,...

I’m not sure who spiked the writers’ punch over the festive period but this week’s episode was twisty, tense and satisfyingly dark in places. More importantly, it hinted at its biggest and most ambitious storyline to date.
To recap, Portland is under threat from the Wesen uprising. Nick, Monroe, Renard, Hank and Wu are trapped and all in serious danger until Juliette appears – blonde and back from the dead – to save them.
We discover Juliette was still alive when Chavez took her and Trubel from Nick’s. Somehow they managed to turn mild-mannered Juliette into their own Nikita,...

We discover Juliette was still alive when Chavez took her and Trubel from Nick’s. Somehow they managed to turn mild-mannered Juliette into their own Nikita,...

Psychoanalysts, take note: I’ve got a new twist on an old diagnosis, thanks to Nick Burkhardt’s predicament in Grimm‘s midseason premiere.
I call it the Madonna-Hexenbiest complex.
It’s when you find yourself lusting after the newly human mother of your infant son, yet are simultaneously obsessed with finding out everything you can about your back-from-the-dead-and-still-a-literal-monster ex-girlfriend.
And if that weren’t enough for a Grimm to handle, the Wesen uprising hits its stride — and gets a name — and one source of guidance/help goes the way of the dinosaur.
How do Nick and the gang handle it all?...

Robots have been a staple on the big screen for many decades, showing up as far back as Fritz Lang’s 1927 classic Metropolis and as recently as Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina. With numerous depictions of robots have come numerous ideas of what they look like, what they’re capable of, whether they’re good or evil, and other such concerns.
Now vimeo user Mennomail has made a mashup of the various robotic representations on the big screen over the years. The video is set to both Fractals by Monea Music and Ich Will by Rammstein, and highlights both the similarities and differences in how robots have been depicted by various filmmakers. Mennomail also released a list of films from which scenes appear, which is as follows:
Films used (in alphabetical order)
1. Automata (2014)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
3. Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001)
4. Alien (1979)

Never mind The Terminator and Ed-209, what about Eve, Hector or Warbeast? Here's a pick of 15 less famous killer robots from the movies...
"They say Zapp Brannigan single-handedly saved the Octillion system from a horde of rampaging killbots!" enthused Leela in classic the Futurama episode, Love's Labour's Lost In Space.
It was, reflected the alcoholic, cigar-smoking robot Bender, "A grim day for Robotkind", before adding as an afterthought, "Eh, but we can always build more killbots."
Killer robots are a longstanding staple of science fiction cinema, and if we were to compile the list of the best and most celebrated, it would probably read pretty much like everyone else's - The Terminator, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Sentinels from X-Men: Days Of Future Past would all get a mention.

It’s the same old drill again, another issue of DC’s regular installment of disappointment. Guess it’s time to get it done. Earth 2: World’s End reaches issue #24 and is set to conclude in two weeks. Looking back on the last six and a half months leads one to conclude that the finale will most certainly be disappointing given how mismanaged this entire endeavor has been since day one. That being said, this week brings shockingly the closest knit issue to date, that is to say, there’s something that ties the many plot lines together and not something like the terrible art or drawn out fight scenes.

Eve of Destruction is another one of these early nineties movies, that’s actually a leftover eighties movie in disguise. Scream Factory is almost specializing in this type of movie at this juncture. It’s actually pretty familiar to their Blu-ray release of I Come In Peace. It’s an obscure enough title that virtually no behind-the-scenes footage or any kind of footage that could use used as supplemental material for the disc is in existence, but the fact that it has been released to Blu-ray is an impressive enough accomplishment. I’m not going to sit here, like some would do, and exclaim that Eve of Destruction has always been my favorite movie. In fact, I think I had only seen it twice prior to my Blu-ray viewing. Back in the early days of HBO and Cinemax, of course. But, I did have fond memories of the times that I did see it.

At long last - the notorious rappin' TV ad for Eve of Destruction that boasted an awesomely cheesy rap song explaining the flick’s premise. Few who saw this commercial that ran for only two weeks leading up to the film's release in January 1991 have ever forgotten it. Hero... Before the clock hits zero!
It might be a 30-second commercial jingle rather than an actual song, and it isn’t even included in the movie; yet, this previously long lost promo is the epitome of what B-Sides is all about. Not since the Maniac Cop 2 closing credits rap song has there been b-movie hip hop greatness of this caliber.
Charles Jackson a.k.a. C.J. Skyy and Michael Haney a.k.a. Ice Mike busted the rhymes about a thermonuclear cyborg being chased by Gregory Hines.

The summary for Eve of Destruction is as follows: "Scientists drill a hole in the universe to harvest a limitless pool of 'dark energy' but the experiment goes horribly wrong and wipes an entire city off the map." Now, that's what's written on the back of the box. Let's point out the absurdity here in the notion of "drilling a hole in the universe," which, last time I checked, is a complete metaphysical impossibility. Even though this movie stars two of my favorite underrated actors (Steven Weber and Treat Williams), I had a hard time getting past that basic conceit.

With Reelz’s spate of disaster-themed movies and miniseries that it’s rolled out this year, the temptation has been to write them all off as hopelessly cheesy cash-ins and retreads. Yet while Ring of Fire, Eve of Destruction, Delete, Cat. 8 certainly have all had their moments of camp, none has really quite tread into Syfy Original Movie territory. As much as we might like it to be different, there can only be one Sharknado. But for better or worse, Exploding Sun might finally earn that reputation. It’s not so much the premise, which admittedly does smack a bit of Airplane II: The [...]

The day has finally come. We’ve been asking for it, for what seems like a century. The long awaited, previously unseen by most, “Cabal Cut” of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, has finally found a home willing to distribute the title on home video. That home is none other than Scream Factory. Other titles were announced as well, such as Assault On Precinct 13(I think, my favorite Carpenter film), Cat People, Saturn 3, Eve Of Destruction and Darkman.
This is phenomenal news. Not only do we finally get one of the horror community’s most sought after titles, but it’s being distributed by, arguably. the current king of cult movie home video. So far, every single Scream Factory release(excluding Dead Souls) have been a cult movie fan’s wet dream. I have no doubt that this trend will continue in the new year. I never really noticed or paid attention to ReelzChannel, now just Reelz, an odd collection of off-network fare, cross-promoting what else is on cable and original programming. So, when Ring of Fire crossed my desk, I knew nothing about it. A miniseries that aired in the spring, it features a familiar cast headlined by Michael Vartan (Alias), Terry O’Quinn (Lost), and Lauren Lee Smith (The L Word). It’s a low budget disaster movie that traces how deep drilling for oil accidentally taps molten lava, triggering a chain reaction that brings the world close to an Extinction Level Event.
The small town is filled with the usual cookie-cutter assortment of characters with conflicts aplenty such as the oil rig worker who lost his son due to his brother’s carelessness and guess who’s out of jail in time to use his knowledge of the old mines? Or that...

As horror movie V/H/S arrives in UK cinemas, Ryan thinks back to an era of browsing the shelves of video rental stores...
How times have changed. That was my overriding thought this week, as two events coincidentally occurred which served as a reminder of just how much the way we consume movies has altered over the past decade. The first was the announcement that Blockbuster, once the world’s biggest chain of movie rental stores, has gone into administration in the UK. Fittingly, perhaps, the news broke on the day that the promoters behind the found-footage horror anthology V/H/S staged an evening designed to invoke memories of hiring videotapes from shops.

James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day was twenty years old yesterday. We take a look back at a sci-fi action classic…
It's hard to believe that Terminator 2 is really twenty years old. I can still remember the excitable reviews of the time, which all raved about its seamless, groundbreaking special effects and relentless action.
I also remember my initial scepticism when I first heard that this sequel to the extraordinarily violent 1984 original was given a 15 rating by the BBFC in the UK. Surely, I thought, this meant that Cameron had decided to tone the movie down for a broader audience?
I needn't have worried, as it turned out. As Cameron proved with Aliens, he's extremely good at directing sequels, and at coming up with ideas that revisit the themes of the original movie, while finding a way of somehow upping the dramatic stakes.

I needn't have worried, as it turned out. As Cameron proved with Aliens, he's extremely good at directing sequels, and at coming up with ideas that revisit the themes of the original movie, while finding a way of somehow upping the dramatic stakes.

Help! They need somebody! Help! Not just anybody! Help! You know they need someone… to give them a big fat new account! Help! Last week’s episode of Mad Men dropped The Beatles explicitly and hysterically (thank you, Sally, for making your mom smile) into the show’s matrix of cultural references—and brought Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce to the proverbial Eve Of Destruction. Loathsome good ol’ boy Lee Garner, Jr. of Lucky Strike—which represents nearly 70% of the agency’s business—told Roger that the tobacco company was pulling its account. The reason: Consolidation. Every now and again, a film will come out of nowhere and clean up at the box office. Regardless of budget, there are some ideas so potent that, with the deft handling of a talented director, can be made into films that immediately capture the imagination.
The Terminator and Halloween are two examples of films made with meagre resources that went on to have a lasting cultural impact, and whose ideas have been shamelessly copied and regurgitated in countless cheap, hurriedly made cash-ins in the years after their release.
Here's our list of seven influential blockbusters, and the very worst films inspired by them...

It was the 1960s and a foursome took over the popular music charts in America, but they didn’t wear mop-tops. Right before the British Invasion, the girl group known as the Shirelles soared with hits such as “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Soldier Boy,” “Will You Still Me Tomorrow,” and “Baby It’s You,” amongst many others. The Shirelles were discovered by Florence Greenberg, an ambitious and very prescient New Jersey housewife who founded Scepter Records, and consequently changed the face of popular music forever. In her business life, Greenberg was a woman who dove right into the middle of a male-dominated record industry and created one of the most successful independent labels of the time, and on the personal side, she left her first marriage for a union with African-American songwriter Luther Dixon.
