The year 1990 saw the release of James Ellroy’s sweeping crime novel L.A. Confidential, which Ellroy wanted to be the most epic book about L.A. ever written. In his own eyes, the author accomplished that goal, calling his own work a “masterpiece” and one he did not envision making the transition to the big screen. Not that he really cared; Ellroy was always vocal about his disinterest in seeing his books adapted into movies, as he wasn’t particularly interested in the medium.
But there was a kindred spirit who similarly loved the City of Angels, and who wanted to tell a very big story about the place where he grew up. Curtis Hanson had been a director of adequate thrillers like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and The River Wild, but he was searching for a project that would allow him to tell a grand-scale story about Los Angeles.

Meryl Streep in The River Wild In the swirling currents of The River Wild, Meryl Streep delivers a performance that is as physically demanding as it is emotionally gripping. Portraying Gail, a mother and skilled rafter, Streep navigates the treacherous waters of both the river and her on-screen family’s dynamics. Gail is the one female lead but carries the whole movie with her strong will, bravery, physical strength, and smart wit, a testament to Streep’s ability to anchor a film with her compelling presence. Her portrayal goes beyond the typical action hero, infusing the character with a relatable humanity that...

November 1st is a tough day for horror hounds. The decorations are still up, the air remains crisp, but the spirit has seemingly moved on, perhaps vanquished by the sun. Alamo Drafthouse says to hell with all of that and has announced two month’s worth of genre joy that’ll take you from Dia de los Muertos to Christmas Eve with minimal whiplash.

NCIS: Sydney Trailer Teases Action and a Dynamic New Team as Iconic Franchise Relocates to Australia
Just when we thought we wouldn't have any NCIS content on the CBS fall schedule, the network called in an assist from NCIS: Sydney.
And now, we have our first look.
CBS dropped the official trailer for NCIS: Sydney Season 1 on Wednesday, and the series certainly capitalizes on its new setting.
It's hard to believe it's taken this long to get an international iteration of the franchise off the ground, but we'll get it on Mondays this fall when NCIS: Sydney debuts in the 10 p.m. Et timeslot.
Off the bat, the series does have the action and teamwork that made its predecessors massive success stories.

The network announced Tuesday that it will take fans down under with the debut of NCIS: Sydney.
While the series was announced for Australian audiences earlier this year, there was no telling whether it would get a stateside home.

It's been 20 years since "The O.C." debuted on Fox, but it's still hard to see past Seth Cohen when Adam Brody shows up in a movie or TV show. It shouldn't be, because he's a terrific actor, but there's something about his still-fresh-faced persona that immediately harkens back to his time as America's favorite nerd-turned-awkwardly-popular-kid on the millennials' slightly savvier version of "Beverly Hills 90210."
Recently, Brody took his typecasting head-on with Evan Morgan's "The Kid Detective," an underrated and frustratingly underseen comedy about an Encyclopedia Brown-type wunderkind who's grown up to be a hard-drinking-and-drugging failure of a detective. His character has never made good on his early promise, but suddenly a murder case falls in his lap, and he has the opportunity to break free of his boy-wonder shackles.
Now 43, Brody's taking roles seemingly designed to torch his bantering nice-guy image. You can currently see him in...

Plot: Follows a pair of siblings who love but distrust each other as they embark on a white-water rafting trip with a small group. One of their friends from childhood turns out to be more dangerous than he appears.
Review: Undoubtedly there will be a ton of comparisons to the original film, but honestly outside of the fact that they are on a river and there’s a convict, this isn’t much connection. In fact, I feel calling it The River Wild does a massive disservice as you’re immediately going to draw a comparison to the Meryl Streep-starring venture. But despite this not having any Oscar Winners in it, the performances are entertaining and the dynamics between the characters are interesting. I found myself on the edge of my seat, despite the story having lower stakes than the original.

However, it is Trevor’s presence that becomes a focal point of suspense in the narrative. Following the revelation of a shocking twist, we discover that Trevor is a convicted parolee whose presence is triggering a sense of impending danger among the group. Despite the apparent red flag, Gray remains undeterred in his decision to include Trevor on their expedition,...

The first trailer for the upcoming film River Wild, in which the long-standing couple, who have been married since 2014, feature, is currently available. Adam and Leighton previously collaborated on the films The Oranges in 2011 and Life Partners in 2014.
Beginning in August 2023, Ben Ketai’s brand-new thriller with a PG-13 rating will make its SVOD premiere on Netflix. "Don't look back - just run!" Surprise - another remake coming our way! Universal Home Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a remake of the fun 90s river thriller The River Wild, this new one directed by Ben Ketai. It may not come as a surprise they're dumping this one direct-to-video in just a few weeks, without much buzz at all. The original film from 1994, starring Meryl Streep & David Strathairn, is a cheesy but actually a pretty solid adventure thriller with some good twists in it (I remember seeing it in theaters and also renting it on VHS after). 2023's The River Wild follows a pair of siblings who love but distrust each other as they embark on a white-water rafting trip with a small group. One of their old friends from growing up, who also joins them, turns out to be more dangerous than he appears. Stuck in the rapids,...

Lawrence Turman Dies: Oscar-Nominated Producer Of ‘The Graduate’, ‘American History X’ & More Was 96
Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Not much else is known about Bell’s Joanne, but Brody’s Noah is a charming rabbi who is stuck in his ways and used to playing things safe, according to the streamer. “He starts to stumble when he meets a brutally honest and proactive Joanne, totally upending his safe life plan,” reads the description for his character.

Adam Brody has talked at length about the one that got away, and with a Flash-led movie on the verge of release, one can only wonder how things would’ve ended up had Brody’s Barry Allen made it to the big screen in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal. The epic superhero tale fell apart in early 2007 due to the impending writers’ strike and the loss of an Australian tax credit, and it continues to be one of Hollywood’s ultimate “what if?” stories.
So, when David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! made its way to the big screen in 2019, one of the most rewarding aspects of the film was Brody’s surprise cameo as the super-powered alter ego of Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman. It was not only perfect casting by virtue of the two actors’ similar wit, but it also allowed for a Justice League: Mortal reunion between Brody and D.J. Cotrona,...

Jim Carrey once called himself the “Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes” after his second straight victory with the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2000 (for “Man on the Moon” following “The Truman Show”). He could win with that group but somehow couldn’t impress Oscar voters. And he’s not the only actor in that situation. Our photo gallery features Carrey among the 20 actors who’ve never been nominated for an Oscar.
Even Academy Awards hosts such as Billy Crystal and Steve Martin haven’t been noticed by Oscar voters other than seeing them perform on the ceremony stage. They have both received critics awards and Golden Globe nominations in their long careers. Martin has at least received an honorary Oscar, as has Donald Sutherland, but alas no individual nomination for either one throughout their careers.

In 1994, Universal Pictures released the thriller "The River Wild" starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon. It was the story of a couple, their kid, and a dog who are white water rafting on the Salmon River in Idaho. They ultimately run into some criminals and find out that the rapids are the least of their worries on this dangerous family outing.
Directed by Curtis Hanson, "The River Wild" also starred David Strathairn, John C. Reilly, Benjamin Bratt, Joseph Mazzello, and a very good dog named Maggie. (At least, that was the dog's name in the film, and its real name isn't in the...

Exclusive: Freevee, Amazon’s ad-supported video streaming service is developing Arranged, a half-hour single-camera romantic comedy series co-written and executive produced by With Love creator Gloria Calderón Kellett and Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam. The project stems from Kellett’s GloNation Studios under the company’s overall deal with Amazon Studios.
Arranged follows a self-destructive movie star (Killam) and an ambitious pop Latina diva who agree to a mutually beneficial “public relationship” in order to help sell her upcoming breakup album and save his declining career, a decision they immediately regret as they quickly realize they hate each other’s guts.
The series is fictional but there are obvious points of reference: the high-profile romances between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck as well as Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.
Kellett and Killam will executive produce with Marc Provissiero (Pen15) for Kellett’s GloNation banner as part of her Amazon Studios deal.

In the 1970s and 1980s director Brian De Palma had some high profile hits with Hitchcockian thrillers such as "Sisters", "Obsession", "Dressed to Kill", "Blow Out" and "Body Double". De Palma's defenders extolled the virtues of these films as clever homages to Hitchcock while detractors accused De Palma of using The Master's formulas to make a fast buck. In 1982 director Robert Benton jumped on the same bandwagon with his own Hitchcockian project, "Still of the Night", which was shot under the title "Stab" before the marketing campaign had been re-evaluated. A few years earlier Benton had triumphed at the Oscars with "Kramer vs. Kramer", taking home the Best Director Oscar. That film also provided an important career boost for Meryl Streep, who also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The two were reunited for this project which stands out on both of their credentials as an odd choice.

One of the stars of Guillermo del Toro’s new noir, he has been a captivating character actor for 40 years, but is rarely put up before the press. We find out why …
Fugitives facing the firing squad have looked more relaxed than David Strathairn does right now. One of the most perspicacious character actors of the past 40 years, he has been exceptional so often on screen that any attempt to list the highlights runs the risk of simply transcribing his IMDb page: Nomadland, LA Confidential, The River Wild, Sneakers, a batch of rigorous dramas by his longtime friend John Sayles (including Matewan and Limbo), a fling with Carmela on The Sopranos, a career-best performance as a predatory teacher in the indie gem Blue Car, and an Oscar nomination for Good Night, and Good Luck. William Lucking, the actor best known for his role as biker Piney Winston on the hit series “Sons of Anarchy,” died on Oct. 18 in his Las Vegas home. Lucking was 80.
“Although William often played toughs and strongmen, in his actual life he was an elegant man with a brilliant intellect who loved to argue about politics and current affairs, discuss philosophy and physics and assert fine-pointed opinions about art and poetry,” his wife Sigrid Insull Lucking wrote in an obituary posted on Facebook by his friend and fellow actor Stephen Macht.
Lucking famously played Samcro member Piermont “Piney” Winston on 35 episodes of Kurt Sutter’s FX crime drama “Sons of Anarchy,” from the start of the series through the fourth season (2008 to 2011).

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Amazon’s “Sound of Metal” is a piece of terrific filmmaking — and its achievements are even more impressive considering Hollywood’s depictions of deafness in the past.
“Sound of Metal,” directed by Darius Marder, stars Riz Ahmed as a heavy-metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing. The film has a three-act structure: Attempts by drummer Ruben to cope; his time spent in a deaf community; and his attempts to re-create his life as it was before the hearing loss.
The heart of the film is the middle segment, when community leader Joe (the excellent Paul Raci) tells Ruben that deafness “is not something to fix” and his assignment is simple: “Learn how to be deaf.”
Director Marder tells Variety, “This film is a wake-up. Most people think of deafness as a physical disability. We don’t understand that it is in fact a culture.”
