30 years after its release, director Brian Levant's "The Flintstones" remains an incredible-looking movie. The 1994 live-action take on Hanna-Barbera's famous prehistoric cartoon sitcom is littered with astonishingly detailed practical sets bringing the primitive suburbia known as Bedrock to colorful life. Equally remarkable are the practical animatronics used to realize the various critters that function as household items in the "Flintstones" universe, including a "garbage disposal" in the form of a Stone Age pig-like creature known as the Pigosaurus and the sassy "recording device" known as the Dictabird. Tragically, though, the movie's original puppet for the Flintstones' pet dinosaur, a Snorkasaurus named Dino, was replaced with a CGI version during development, as detailed in Patrick (H) Willems' excellent video essay, "The Rise And Fall Of Muppet Cinema."
The problem with "The Flintstones," is, well, everything else. Being rooted in mid-20th-century suburban stereotypes, the characters from the "Flintstones" cartoon aren't substantial...

“In the Streets” is the first edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.Illustration by Lale Westvind.I started errantly watching live streams at work not long after the Sphere first blinked its enormous electric eye in September 2023. This was a vestige of a pandemic-era habit, lockdown having been a good time to virtually peer into places one could never go. Jellyfish floating in seemingly limitless blue suspension at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, some rural trail in South Dakota, the top of the Eiffel Tower. You could drop in to any of these streams and feel, reassuringly, that nothing consequential was happening. After spending some time letting these feeds unspool in the background, one begins to wonder who set these cameras up; who maintains the connection, checks on the equipment, wipes dirt off the lens; who decided this or that perspective was the best, the most representative,...

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.
Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:
The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.
Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.
Two features with awards buzz are coming to Netflix just weeks after their debuts at the Toronto film festival: “The Laundromat,” Steven Soderbergh‘s wry satire about international financial fraud that showcases Oscar darling Meryl Streep; and “Dolemite Is My Name,” a vehicle for Eddie Murphy who portrays 1970s comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

April showers might bring May flowers, but what to do during the rainy season? Why, modern movie-lover does when the weather outside is frightful, curl up with some Netflix. (Maybe get some chill in there, if you’re lucky). While not the most romantic of movies, classic crime lovers can enjoy Brian De Palma’s “Scarface,” which lands on the platform next month. After you get your fix of an infinitely quotable and smoldering Al Pacino, you can jump ahead to the equally as disturbing David Fincher classic, “Seven.”
A few tear-jerking Oscar winners also head to Netflix in April, including the Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger-starring “Cold Mountain,” and Roberto Benigni’s WWII drama “Life Is Beautiful.” For lighter fare, check out “The Iron Giant,” or both live-action “The Flinstones” movies (for my Rosie O’Donnell die-hards).
Hopefully, that’s enough to keep you busy until May. Check out...

Hailey Baldwin has turned quite a few heads in recent years. The 20-year-old and daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin has gone from a cute celebrity kid to a stunning runway model and member of a growing entourage of hot young stars. She wasn't even in kindergarten yet when her dad started taking her to family fun nights at movie premieres. As a child, she has walked the red carpets at screenings for films such as The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Shrek 3 and The Pink Panther 2. When she was about 13, she accompanied her dad to the 2010 ESPYs. A year later, they attended the premiere of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. She and Justin Bieber became good friends and would...

The world lost two famous supporting screen talents this weekend. Firstly, comedian and famed character actor Taylor Negron died at the age of 57 after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognise the name, but his deadpan delivery and complete lack of fear about tackling all sorts of topics will long be remembered.
Negron is best known for numerous bit roles in various films and TV shows including "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Last Boy Scout," "Easy Money," "River's Edge," "Punchline," "Angels in the Outfield," "Spy Hard," "Bio-Dome," Chairman of the Board," "The Thin Pink Line," "Stuart Little," "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas ," "The In Crowd," "Loser," "The Hughleys," "So Little Time," "Funky Monkey," "The Aristocrats," "Three Days to Vegas," "Vamps" and more.

Hollywood has a bad track-record for cartoon to live-action adaptations, so it makes sense that Bedrock's most beloved characters should remain in their original, animated form
The Flintstones movie (1994) and its 2000 prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, deserve to be trampled to death by herds of rampaging velociraptors, not least for the crime of casting Rick Moranis, then Stephen Baldwin, as poor Barney Rubble. And yet there is hope this week that the classic cartoon might yet carve a more attractive place for itself in the celluloid cliff face, after Warner Bros announced plans for a new big-screen adaptation.
There's no need this time around for producers to recruit the film industry's cuddliest actors to play Fred. Nor will bright young stars such as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson be offered a chance to play Wilma and Betty, at least not in the flesh. Because the new Flintstones movie...

Yabba dabba doo! According to THR, Warner Bros. is reviving The Flintstones in the form of a new animated feature film to be produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.
When last we heard of the beloved “modern Stone Age family,” Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was set to produce a new TV series, but the project was tabled after his pilot failed to impress the studio. Now, Warner Bros. is turning to their animation banner, Warner Animation Group (which was behind The Lego Movie) to bring the town of Bedrock to the big screen. Chris Henchy, who is partnered with Ferrell and McKay in Gary Sanchez Productions and co-wrote the script for Will Ferrell’s comedy The Campaign, has been hired to pen the screenplay for The Flintstones.

When Madonna unveiled her second directorial effort "W.E." at the Venice Film Festival in 2011, the critics (this one included) were pretty merciless. That glossy mashup of Wallis Simpson biopic and contemporary Harlequin romance was, admittedly, a pretty easy target -- The Weinstein Company's advance hype didn't fool anybody -- but the sheer vapid ineptitude of its storytelling still managed to surprise. Andrea Riseborough received some good notices for work as Simpson, Arianna Phillips' super-glam costumes were Oscar-nominated and Madge's own theme song even scooped a Golden Globe, but after this and her little-seen debut "Filth and Wisdom," no one seemed to be begging the pop queen to return to the director's chair. But hey, Madonna has never in her entire career been cowed by criticism, and she's not about to start now. It was announced earlier today that she is to direct her third feature "Adé" -- an adaptation of...

In his new film, Alan Cumming plays a colourful cross-dresser looking to adopt a neglected child. The star talks about his own plans for parenthood – and his dreadful dancing
Early in our conversation, Alan Cumming declares that he is not the flamboyant extrovert he appears to be on stage – which is, after all, where he has given his career-defining performances: a decade ago, as Emcee in Sam Mendes's Cabaret; and last year in his one-man Macbeth. Both will be spoken of long after everyone has forgotten his roles in The Smurfs, Garfield or The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.
At 48, there is certainly an enduring softness about Cumming. It's there in his accent (2% New York, but largely Scottish Highlands), his appearance (elfin with greying spiky hair) and his sentiments ("It's too easy to be mean in life"). And he is as understated as anyone can be while sporting a...

There will be another Flintstones movie, this one sticking with animation. The previous two films, 1994's The Flintstones starring John Goodman and Rosie O'Donnell and it's prequel The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas starring Stephen Baldwin and Jane Krakowski, were live-action. The lead roles of Fred, Wilma and baby Pebbles and their best friends Barney, Betty and baby Bam-Bam Rubble have not been cast yet but side players have. WWE wrestlers will have a part of the action with John Cena playing John Cenastone, Cm Punk will become Cm Punkrock and WWE ringleader Vince McMahon will become Vince McMagma. Why is that? It's because WWE Studios is partnering with Warner Brothers on the movie. Also, the film isn't going to get a theatrical release, instead going straight to VOD and DVD.

The Flintstones are returning to film in a new deal between Warner Bros and WWE Studios, Deadline.com reports.
The upcoming animated feature is set for a 2015 release. According to Deadline, the film will unite Flintstones favorites such as Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble with big WWE names including John Cena.
The Flintstones, which started as an animated television show in the 1960s, was adapted to a live-action film starring John Goodman and Elizabeth Perkins in 1994, and a second-live action film, "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas," starring Mark Addy and Kristen Johnston in 2000.

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane has done well with funny fat family men in the past, but when Fox confirmed the news that he will be re-booting "The Flintstones" some eyebrows were raised. What does the guy who brought us moments like this:
have in mind for the much-loved "modern stone age family"? Well, fans of Fred and Barney, need only look so far as the Flintstones-inspired "Family Guy" sketches for a hint of what may lie ahead:
MacFarlane's desire to helm a reboot of the classic cartoon is not exactly surprising to his fans. Fred and Barney have popped up in "Family Guy" cartoons for years, engaging in the sexual innuendo, crassness, and toilet humor that are par for the course in MacFarlane's cartoons, including "The Cleveland Show" and "American Dad." "The Flintstones," however, revolved around work at the quarry, fights with the neighbors, and family time at the drive-in theater.

Seth MacFarlane To Reboot 'The Flintstones,' Because Life Is A Long, Cruel Series Of Disappointments
Yabba Dabba Don't "The Flintstones" is a genuine pop culture icon. Sure, it may have been a riff on "The Honeymooners," thankfully stripped of the overtones of domestic violence, but it was also a truly affectionate, witty look at suburban American life, set in a beautifully designed neanderthal world. It's not "The Cherry Orchard" or anything, but it's pretty good. And, thanks to being tied up in various legal issues, the show has mostly been left alone since the disastrous Spielberg-produced 1994 live-action version, and its even worse prequel "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas" six years later. Until now,…...

Yabba Dabba Doo! Seth MacFarlane received the green light to reboot the “The Flintstones” as a television and film property after years of negotiation between Twentieth Century Fox Television and Warner Brothers Television. Warner Brothers Television own the rights after acquiring Hanna-Barbera, the company that produces “The Flintstones” cartoon series. Deadline said the rightholders were “somewhat concerned how the classic series would be interpreted given MacFarlane’s brand of raunchy comedies like ‘Family Guy.’” “The Flintstones” original cartoon series aired from 1960 to 1966 on ABC. It is about a Fred Flinstone, a Stone-Age man with his family and his best friend Barney Rubble. The cartoon series would be rebooted several times over the next few decades. The cartoon was even adapted as live-action films including 1994’s “The Flintstones,” and 2000’s “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas. According to Deadline, there is no broadcast date of the reboot cartoon series, but it will air on Fox.

I understand it’s an important find and all, but you’ve gotta admit this “gay caveman” story that made the news last week is also pretty hilarious. A gay caveman? That’s a stand-up comedy routine, not an archaeological discovery!
AfterElton.com already took on the problems with how the media reported the story, plus we also provided our own proof that us ‘mos have always been around – even during the Stone Age.
Nevertheless, since the word “caveman” somehow never fails to bring to my mind the image of a hot Abercrombie & Fitch model posing in a loincloth, the story inevitably got me to thinking of the dozens of Hollywood-ized interpretations of early humans that moviegoers have been treated to over the past several decades.
True, the majority of these interpretations aren’t exactly, shall we say, accurate (to my knowledge, they didn’t actually have laser-whitening capabilities back...

The end of April is typically the calm before the summer storm, but Hollywood has become more and more aggressive with the timeframe as the years have progressed. This year, for instance, with Iron Man 2 set for May 7, high-profile A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) launches at 3,332 theaters on the April 30-May 1 weekend. Five Years Ago - 2005 This weekend was one of the industry's most significant bids to start the summer season early with the release of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and XXX: State of the Union, but it failed. Hitchhiker's Guide blasted off with a chart-topping $21.1 million at 3,133 sites, which was solid by sci-fi comedy standards but perceived as somewhat of a letdown for such a long-awaited book adaptation. The Vin Diesel-free XXX sequel opened in third with a disastrous $12.7 million at 3,480 sites after giving a generic Tom Clancy treatment to the extreme James Bond of the first movie.

Kristen Stewart may be an international superstar thanks to her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, but she actually had critics and moviegoers singing her praises well before Twilight (2008) exploded into theaters. Born to John and Jules-Mann Stewart on April 9, 1990, Stewart kicked off her acting career at just eight years old, in a school play, and just a couple of years later, after brief appearances in The Thirteenth Year (1999), The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), and The Safety of Objects (2001), she wowed audiences with a remarkable performance as Jodie Foster's diabetic daughter in the thriller Panic Room (2002). Stewart never looked back from there, mixing major studios films with indie projects, and amassing such credits as Cold Creek Manor (2003), Speak (2004), Catch that Kid (2004), Undertow (2004), Fierce People (2005), Zathura (2005), In the Land of Women (2007), The Messengers (2007), The Cake Eaters (2007), Into the Wild (2007), What Just Happened (2008), The Yellow Handkerchief (2008), and Jumper...

The Spy Next Door sounds like a lesser film in the James Bond cannon, but even that is far too kind a designation for this Jackie Chan movie. The Hong Kong action star uses all of his considerable charm and physicality, but it's not enough to save the film from the clutches of director Brian Levant, who has previously ruined family trips to the movies with Are We There Yet?, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, and Snow Dogs. If parents think getting conned into watching this is a miserable experience, they should wait for the whine-filled aftermath when they realize their kids didn't like it either.
A retread of The Pacifier by way of Spy Kids, The Spy Next Door stars Chan as Bob Ho, a Chinese agent on loan to the CIA. After just a few months of dating his pretty neighbor Gillian (Amber Valetta), Bob tries to...

One wonders what sins Jackie Chan could have committed in a single lifetime to warrant having an abomination like this pathetic excuse for a movie weighing down his karma. We know what cinema-criminal director Briant Levant did: he inflicted the likes of Snow Dogs, Are We There Yet?, and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas upon an unsuspecting public. These really are three of the very worst movies of recent years, and it boggles the mind how Levant continues to get these very high-paying directing jobs. (Current DGA minimum for a big-budget feature: just under $200,000. As a director with a “track record,” even of making the shittiest movies imaginable, Levant will have been paid much more.) It’s true that both Dogs and There turned a profit, because they were so cheap to produce -- in the financial sense as well as, of course, the brain-dead soul-crushing sense -- but...

“Leap Year,” the romantic comedy set in Ireland starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode that comes on Friday, is getting slated by critics. The story of a woman (Adams) who comes to Ireland to lure her boyfriend (Goode) into marrying her is drawing hoots and catcalls from the critics and a massive thumb down. Here are some samples of the negative press the move has received Us Magazine The normally reliable Amy Adams makes a rare misstep in this lackluster romantic comedy. She plays a controlling Boston yuppie who travels to Ireland to propose to her beau on February 29 (inspired by an Irish tradition in which women can pop the question on a leap year). But after some bad luck strands her on the other side of the country, she pays a cash-starved innkeeper (Matthew Goode) to drive her to Dublin and - spoiler alert! - falls for him. Despite...

Leap Year is the kind of movie that shows up weekly, if not daily, on the Lifetime, We and Hallmark channels. Apparently, the public has an insatiable appetite for unfunny romantic comedies about opposites, who attract after first repelling each other. And, apparently, Hollywood has a bottomless pit of this drivel from which to feed that gaping, witless maw -- with films like 27 Dresses, The Ugly Truth, New in Town -- and now this film. Women of the world -- unite against brain-dead chick flicks. Written by the dread team of Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (authors of such classics as Made of Honor, Josie and the Pussycats, and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas), Leap Year (opening Friday 1/8/10) stars Amy Adams as Anna, a control freak from Boston who, in the early scenes, is disappointed when her drippy doctor boyfriend...

Pity me. It’s January, and I have to go to the movies. The Spy Next Door (opens in the U.S. and Canada on January 15; no U.K. release date has been announced yet) is from director Brian Levant, who is to cinema what Pol Pot is to human rights -- he is responsible for such atrocities as Snow Dogs and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas. And how sad is it going to be to see Jackie Chan refusing to grow old gracefully? Obviously, he can’t do the kung fu anymore, so he’s reduced to romancing a woman (Amber Valletta) young enough to be his daughter and babysitting her kids in the hopes of getting into her pants. It’s as if someone figured Are We There Yet? -- also from Levant -- wasn’t crass enough. Also: Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez in the same movie?...

Brian Levant is no stranger to translating animated classics into live action features. The "Beethoven" director oversaw both "The Flintstones" in 1994 and "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas" in 2000. For his new Cartoon Network production "Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins," however, Levant went in with a lofty goal to reboot the "Scooby-Doo" franchise, which has already seen two feature films with flesh-and-blood actors. The director's first step was to recruit a younger cast.
"When we started filming, the youngest member of our cast was barely 16 years old, and I think the age of the cast reflects the innocence and energy and an openness to new stimuli – in general and specifically – in this franchise," Levant said. "By starting over, we have re-energized the franchise and given it a new reason to exist."

As expected, Universal's Meet the Fockers took first place in the boxoffice race during the first official weekend of the new year, taking in a stellar $28.5 million while slipping a slim 32% in its third session, according to Monday's final figures. The blockbuster comedy sequel, starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, shot past the $200 million mark Sunday as the cume-to-date moved to $204.3 million -- making it the sixth-highest-grossing release in 2004. But what wasn't expected was the big splash made in the second spot by the distributor's Michael Keaton starrer, White Noise, a low-budget supernatural thriller from Gold Circle Films, which conjured up $24.1 million. White Noise was the only wide release this weekend, and industry observers thought it would open in the $12 million-$15 million range. With Universal having films in the top two spots -- with a combined gross of $52.5 million -- the distributor tapped a controlling 53% of the boxoffice total for the weekend's top 12 films. The last time the studio had films in first and second place in the same weekend was in April 2000, with U-571 and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.

Mark Addy, who plays FRED FLINTSTONE in the recent movie Viva Rock Vegas (2000), tried to persuade the film-makers that Fred should have a Yorkshire accent. The British actor was determined Fred should have his accent - but the producers made him have coaching sessions until he could say "Yabba-dabba-do" in the right way. Addy explains, "Nobody really knows what accent people had back then do they? I tried to blind them with science. "I argued that, with the shift in tectonic plates and the like, Yorkshire could well have been the centre of civilisation at the time and Fred would have sounded like he lived in York - just like me".
