“I think it was Andy Warhol who said, “Make art and let others decide whether it is good or bad. But while they are deciding, make some more”.
That was the line with which Nicole Kidman ended her 15-minute acceptance speech after Meryl Streep had presented her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.
That is something that seems entirely appropriate for Kidman, who doesn’t seem to stop “making art,” taking risks at every turn, telling stories through her power not just as an actor, but also a producer dedicated to bringing those stories to screens big and small. At 56, she is on the younger side of the previous 48 recipients of this very high honor, the first Australian to receive it. Nicole Kidman has captivated audiences with her spellbinding acting for over 40 years and has excelled in theatre, film, and television. Not only is she an accomplished producer but a five-time Academy Award nominee. Her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours (2002) earned her the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967, she began her career in Australia as a teenager with roles in Bush Christmas (1983) and BMX Bandits (1983). Her performance in Dead Calm (1989) would grab the attention of Hollywood, and Tom Cruise, casting her in her breakout role as neurologist Dr. Claire Lewicki, in Days of Thunder (1990).
Her trajectory to establishing herself among Hollywood’s A-List continued as she starred alongside Cruise again in Far and Away (1992), mastered her comedic acting chops as an aspiring television personality in Gus Van Sant’s black comedy, To Die For (1995), and portrayed another doctor in the superhero film Batman Forever (1995), opposite Val Kilmer.

Few actresses of her era take as many chances as Nicole Kidman. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress has been one of the industry’s most sought-after performers since the early 1990s, and appeared in everything from splashy musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (which netted Kidman her first of five Academy Award nominations) to historical fiction like “The Hours” (which won Kidman the Best Actress Oscar for playing Virginia Woolfe) to psychological thrillers like “Eyes Wide Shut” (where she starred opposite her now-ex-husband Tom Cruise) to blockbuster superhero movies like “Aquaman” (Kidman will also return for the sequel in 2022).
And that’s just on the big screen. In recent years, Kidman has acquitted herself exceedingly well in a spate of prestige television series, winning an Emmy for her nuanced work in “Big Little Lies” and scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “The Undoing.”

Heath Ledger’s acting career could have surely been flourishing even now if it hadn’t been for his tragic death back in 2008 — but his legacy still lives on.
Before the actor rose to wild prominence thanks to his leading role in a Western-coded romantic drama Brokeback Mountain, Ledger starred in a 2001 comedy that Netflix would be quick to pick up for a sequel — but luckily didn’t.
Literally at the same time with prominent Baz Luhrmann and his Moulin Rouge!, director Brian Helgeland started a trend of mixing distant historical eras up within one movie. His beloved medieval comedy A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger as a peasant squire who enters a jousting tournament replacing his late master, is a peculiar fusion of the 14th century plot vibes and a soundtrack coming straight from the 1970s.
Upon its release in 2001, the movie didn’t look very impressive for critics,...

Jake Gyllenhaal appreciated Christoper Nolan and Baz Luhrmann phoning him personally to say why he didn't land roles in their movies. The 'Road House' star was gutted to lose out on the titular role in 2005's 'Batman Begins', which went to Christian Bale, and Christian (Ewan McGregor) in the latter's 2001 jukebox musical 'Moulin Rouge!', which the late Heath Ledger was also considered for.Despite his disappointment, he praised both filmmakers for explaining the reasoning behind their decision to pick another actor. He told 'The Howard Stern Show': “What I felt was disappointment when I didn’t get it. Both Heath and I were disappointed.“But that’s Ewan McGregor’s part. You learn to go, ‘There’s another one. I can try and go in and audition for another one. Remember Baz Luhrmann’s early 2000 film about romance and music in Paris? Yes, we are referring to the 2001 release of the jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!, which film critic Roger Ebert once likened to “being trapped on an elevator with the circus”.
In the 2001 flick, we saw English writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) pen his love story on his typewriter as he mourned the loss of his beloved Satine (Nicole Kidman). You may not be aware, though, that multiple actors tried out for the role of Christian but were not selected. Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal; Ethan Hawke was also considered for the part.

The Joker and Harley Quinn are set to serenade audiences in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” but if, and how many original songs will be included in the film, is a mystery.
Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland. However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version. Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown. We do know, according to sources, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first “Joker” film, is said to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into each number. Warner Bros declined to comment.

After the conclusion of each Academy Awards ceremony, I always go back and rewatch the telecast from start to finish. I want to pick up on all of the things that I might have missed during my initial viewing. I especially like to study the nominees’ reactions each time an envelope is opened — particularly for the major categories when the famous five-camera shot is strategically displayed on the TV screen. I always rewind the moment that each winner is announced, so that I can carefully study the look on each individual’s face both before and after the big reveal.

Opening night is March 21.
Another recent arrival, The Notebook musical, adapted from the bestseller and hit movie, continued pulling in big audiences in previews at the Schoenfeld, with 99.7% of seats filled and a gross of $880,360. Opening night is March 14.

Fresh off of winning her second career Grammy, Kylie Minogue has signed with UTA for live representation in the United States and Canada and acting worldwide.
The Australian singer won the best pop dance recording Grammy — a new award — earlier this month for her viral hit “Padam Padam.” The song is from her 16th studio album, Tension, which was released last year and reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Minogue, 55, won her first Grammy — best dance recording — in 2004 for her groovy hit “Come Into My World.” Her hits also include “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” “The Loco-motion” and “Love at First Sight,” among others.
She has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, earned five billion streams and launched nine U.K. No. 1 albums. She’s won three Brit Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards, and is the only female artist to score a No.

Anyone who didn’t perfectly predict this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design has a uniquely valid excuse. This applies to all but a tiny fraction of Gold Derby’s nearly 11,000 prognosticators, whose solid consensus ultimately conflicted with the academy’s highly unusual decision to populate both categories with the same five films: “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Since these two craft races have only been completely congruent twice before, it’s especially understandable that very few people anticipated this outcome.
The film that mainly tripped folks up in this case was “Napoleon,” which garnered support from only 49.9% of our users in the costume design race and scraped by with a production design backing rate of just 7.5%. In the former category, many had trouble settling on two of four on-the-bubble candidates, while the latter’s pesky fifth slot...

Broadway box office held fairly steady last week, with Sweeney Todd‘s post-Groban slide at least partially offset by gains from most other shows. In all, the 25 productions grossed $24,615,726 for the week ending January 28, about 4% greater than the previous week.
Attendance was up about 5% to 217,847.
Box office for Sweeney, which recently saw the departures of original stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, was on the decline for the second consecutive week, down about $19,000 to $776,081. Attendance at the Lunt-Fontanne was at 90% of capacity, but a low average ticket price – $81.97 – kept total receipts modest. The trend likely will slow or stop with the February 9 arrivals of starry replacements Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster.
In the final week of its limited run, Gutenberg! The Musical! set a house record at the James Earl Jones Theatre, taking in $1,462,227 and playing to standing room only crowds. Producers announced yesterday that the musical, starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells,...

Broadway box office was back on earth last week following the previous week’s unusual double-holiday surge, when both Christmas and New Year’s Eve fell within the same theatrical window.
For the week ending January 7, Broadway’s 26 productions grossed a total $29,681,396, a 35% drop from the previous week‘s $45,413,789. Attendance was down about 14% to 219,787; the discrepancy between the percentages attributable to the holiday week’s high ticket prices.
Last week’s average ticket price was $135.05, $42 lower than the holiday week.
Despite the total box office drop-off, most shows continued pulling in decent numbers, with 15 of the 26 productions grossing more than $1 million (and three of those taking in more than $2 million).
Members of the $1M Club were & Juliet, Aladdin; Back to the Future; Gutenberg!; Hamilton; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Merrily We Roll Along; Mj; Moulin Rouge!; Six; Spamalot; and The Book of Mormon. The highest earners were The Lion King...

Ethan Hunt is about to join the DC Universe (or what is left of it). Top Gun pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell could find himself flying wingman to Harry Potter. Get ready for Batman v Transformers! The jokes wrote themselves Wednesday evening as late holiday season news broke: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met with Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish earlier this week to discuss a potential merger of their respective media companies. Yet any attempt at humor is of the strictly gallows variety (particularly since it is difficult to imagine someone like Tom Cruise working for David Zaslav).
That’s because the idea of a Wbd and Paramount merger is bleak unless you own significant stock in either media company. That’s who these deals are designed for—not the filmmakers, artists, and certainly not the consumers. As the media landscape contracts ever further atop itself, and conglomerates complete...

Broadway held steady as it continued through the holiday season, with a total gross of $30,723,247 for the 26 productions up a small 4% from the previous week, and attendance of 227,099 up about the same percentage.
Year over year, though, the news isn’t quite so cheery. The $30.7M weekly figure is about 17% lower than the figure from this week last year and the total attendance figure is off about 20% from last year’s 283,548. The 26-show roster is skinnier too: Last year had 35 shows running at this time.

Broadway box office and ticket prices fell back to earth last week following the previous week’s Thanksgiving holiday-inflated numbers, with the total gross for the 26 productions dropping 14% to a combined $29,568,897.
The average ticket price for the week ending Dec. 3 was $134.70, down $16.19, or 11%, from the holiday week’s average. Total attendance was off only 4%, to 219,511, indicating the decline in box office revenue can be attributed largely to the lower amount spent on tickets.
One new show, Appropriate starring Sarah Paulson, joined the roster and filled nearly every seat at the non-prof Second Stage’s Hayes Theatre. The play, written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and co-starring Elle Fanning and Corey Stoll, among others, took in $483,124 for seven previews, with attendance at 98% of the venue’s capacity. Every fan of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971) loves the scene where Gene Wilder, as the mystical candy maker, takes his guests on a psychedelic tunnel ride, zooming through the bowels of the Chocolate Factory as he chants a little verse, getting angrier and more hysterical by the second. Wilder’s Wonka was a sweetheart, but he had a hidden maniacal side. And in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Tim Burton’s majestically wacked 2005 remake, Johnny Depp, then at the apex of his movie stardom, went full Depp, playing Wonka like some louche vampiristic cross between Anna Wintour and Michael Jackson.
But in “Wonka,” the fun, rousing, impeccably staged, jaw-droppingly old-fashioned musical prequel to the legendary Roald Dahl tale, Timothée Chalamet plays the title character as the beaming soul of effervescent goodness. His chocolate passion is there (he’s all but defined by it), but the kinks are gone...

15 years ago, an epic romance arrived in movie theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday to a storm of snobbery from critics. No, not Twilight, but Baz Luhrmann’s ode to his down under home, Australia. On this somewhat unceremonious anniversary, he has transformed it into a Hulu limited series, retitled Faraway Downs.
His follow-up to his divisive Best Picture nominee Moulin Rouge!, Luhrmann’s film casts Nicole Kidman as haughty British Lady Sarah who travels to her husband’s Australian cattle ranch at the brink of WWII. There she finds her husband murdered, begins to care for a biracial Aboriginal boy named Nullah (Brandon Walters), and begins to fall for an enigmatic cattleman known enigmatically as The Drover and played by Hugh Jackman at his most beefcake— yes, even by Wolverine standards.

Kress explains the unlikely casting of Ren Watabe as Kentaro, stating, “We needed an actor who we really wanted to follow through the series. Someone who was believable in the Japanese world, but also could speak English for the English-speaking world as well. He really came out of nowhere. In his audition, the first time that we saw him, our casting director in Tokyo introduced us to him. He said, ‘I’m really tired, I’m sorry.’ We said, ‘What were you working on last night?’ And he’s a line cook.

Broadway began its trek into the lucrative holiday season last week at a steady clip, with the 28 shows grossing a total of $29,163,440 for the week ending November 12. That’s up about 10% over the previous week, though down about the same percentage from last year at this time.
Last year’s take at this point in the fall – $32,314,920 for 34 shows – was closer to pre-Covid pandemic levels: The week ending November 11, 2018, saw Broadway receipts of $36,501,888, while the week ending November 10, 2019 was at $35,399,366. In 2021, when Broadway returned from its year-plus shutdown, the comparable November week was down to $25,565,641.
The better news is that the majority of shows currently on the boards are doing pretty good business, with only six of the 28 shows pulling in audiences of less than 90% capacity.

One of Nicole Kidman’s most disappointing films may be coming back to haunt her. Following the success of 2001’s “Moulin Rouge!” the Oscar winner joined Hugh Jackman and reunited with director Baz Luhrmann for the 2009 period epic, “Australia.” The movie earned middling reviews, but more importantly, was a box office bomb earning just $211 million worldwide off a reportedly $130 million budget. It was such a miss, that it ended Luhrmann’s streak at (then) 20th Century Fox, where he’d effectively launched his career as a global commercial filmmaker.

“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.
Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”
While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...
