Directed by Greg Berlanti and produced by star Scarlett Johansson, the romantic dramedy Fly Me to the Moon was originally meant to be released directly to the Apple TV+ streaming service, but strong test screenings inspired Sony to give the film a theatrical release first. The movie isn’t setting the box office on fire, having pulled in just $20 million worldwide during its first week of release, but it will be heading to Apple TV+ soon anyway – and Berlanti and Johansson were able to establish a strong working relationship during the making of the film. That’s a working relationship they’re now set to continue with a psychological thriller called Sasha, and Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios has come out the winner of a five-way auction to land the rights to the project.

Actor John Wayne starred in a wide assortment of movies primarily rooted in the Western and war genres. He had a signature walk and a slow, booming voice that commanded moviegoers’ attention. However, only nine of Wayne’s movies were selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” They select 25 film each year for this high honor. However, the Wayne films that made the cut aren’t all the obvious picks.

“It’s a true revival in the sense that it is taking existing material and making something new with it,” explains Claybourne Elder of the gender-bent Broadway revival of “Company.” Elder portrays Andy (April in the original version of the show), a hysterically dim-witted but sincere lover of Katrina Lenk’s Bobbie. The actor reveals that swapping the genders of the characters in this Stephen Sondheim musical, helps shape the story in a way contemporary audiences can appreciate. As the actor describes the events in his life which lead him to this point in his career, it feels like destiny that he should star in this particular production. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Elder admits that as a young theater kid, he would sing along to cast albums at home, but he would only be singing “the fun parts.” Little Red in “Into the Woods,” Dot in “Sunday in the Park With George,...

This article contains spoilers for “The Suicide Squad”
As expected, there was a whole lot of death in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad.” And though it was hard for fans, the squad members themselves were largely unphased by most of them, save for Rick Flag’s. But there was one other death that really hit home for both fans and Polka Dot Man in particular — Milton.
But let’s be honest: Polka Dot Man’s reaction was just…logical. It was how any normal human — so not Bloodpsort, and definitely not Harley Quinn — would react to seeing someone they’ve come to know get killed. Poor Milton was loyal from the moment he started chauffeuring the squad around Corto Maltese, and in the end, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Double and Nothing: Babbit Blunders on Binary Barrymore
Jamie Babbit doubles down on Drew Barrymore for her sixth feature, The Stand In, a somewhat standard riff on two unrelated lookalikes trading places in a superficial simulacrum of celebrity. It’s been five years since Babbit’s last feature, 2015’s Addicted to Fresno, and the director’s indie aesthetics have often been part of her oeuvre’s ragtag charm, from her blazing inception with 1999’s But I’m a Cheerleader and on to various playful items, like the pulp genre enjoyments of The Quiet (2005) and even 2012’s Breaking the Girls.
Having directed a head spinning number of different television episodes for a diverse array of notable television series, it’s a pleasure to find Babbit unveil a new offering, even if the almost alarming amount of cameo appearances in her latest don’t add up to much behind her lead star’s...

The first time director Jamie Babbit heard the song “Both Sides Now” on the radio, it immediately felt familiar.
She realized she knew the song, not from Joni Mitchell’s expansive library of hits, but because it had been sung at the drug and rehab center her mom ran in Ohio, with different lyrics meant to amplify the perils of addiction.
The revamped lyrics went: “I’ve looked at drugs from both sides now. And still somehow it’s drug delusions. I recall, I really don’t like drugs at all.”
“Growing up, I always thought, ‘Wow, that’s a fun song.’ I didn’t think about the lyrics. As Argentina state film finance has dwindled, Argentine writers and directors are looking ever more to drama series creation as an alternative. MipCancun caught Argentine talent pitching 10 projects that have been awarded development coin by Argentina’s Incaa film-tv agency. That came two weeks before Ventana Sur, which will debate the role of the series show runner.
A drill down on project details:
“Dead Trees”
Directed by Ana Piterbag, “Dead Trees” has the look and feel of a Patagonia Noir, set in a remote Argentine village. A fantasy-laced thriller spiced, produced by Cinema 7 Films and Argentina’s Los Andes Cine. Cinema 7 Films last project, “A Life of Speed: The Juan Manuel Fangio Story,” premiered on Netflix in March.
“You Have Reached Your Destination,”
A technological romantic comedy exploring couples’ dilemmas with gadgets, which figure as a catalyst in the film’s narrative. “You Have Reached Your Destination” focuses on everyday-life with a near-future twist.

As the USS Discovery starts to explore the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, the first stop is, understandably, to check-in on how the Planet Earth is doing. Unlike Battlestar Galactica searching for Earth forever, Discovery decided to get the whole Earth thing out of the way right away. In Episode 3, “People of Earth,” the crew returns to the home planet of the Federation and learns things are not remotely similar to how they left it.
Along the way, “People of Earth” references a long-running Tng-Douglas Adams joke, a quip from Kirk in The Wrath of Khan, a famous DS9-era alien species, and more!

Ben Mortley, Jaclyn Hewer and Antony Webb.
Writer-director Antony Webb and producer Jaclyn Hewer’s Carmentis has won the $5,000 CinefestOz Short Film Prize.
It’s the first year the festival has presented shorts awards, with Carmentis beating out Carrie’s Doing Great, I Want to Make a Film About Women and The Immortal for the top gong.
The sci-fi short follows a grief-stricken miner (Ben Mortley) who finds himself injured on the desolate planet ‘Carmentis’ and must overcome his personal demons in order to survive. It was previously selected for the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, and recently screened as part of Fantasia Festival.
“We are so proud to have won the first inaugural short film prize,” Webb and Hewer said.
“CinefestOZ is a festival that has become an essential part of the fabric for the Australian screen industry and we couldn’t be more excited to accept such a prestigious award.

Take a look at all the trailers and announcements from DC FanDome below.
‘The Batman’
Director Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” will be a “Year Two” story from the early days of the Caped Crusader’s career. The tone is more gritty and grounded than previous iterations, and Robert Pattinson’s Batman isn’t afraid to brutally beat down criminals. His rogues gallery, including Catwoman, the Riddler and Penguin, are still young and haven’t become big-time villains in Gotham City yet.

Exclusive: Fear the Walking Dead standout Colman Domingo has signed a first-look deal with AMC Studios, the studio behind the AMC zombie drama series, a spinoff from The Walking Dead.
Domingo made his debut as Victor Strand in a two-episode guest arc during Fear the Walking Dead’s first season and was made a series regular at the start of Season 2. He made his directorial debut on the show and has directed two episodes to date.
“From the moment AMC viewers first saw Colman Domingo as the mysterious and dynamic Victor Strand in season one of Fear The Walking Dead, they haven’t been able to look away, and neither have we,” said Sarah Barnett, President of AMC Networks Entertainment Group & AMC Studios. “He has become a core character of the series and, as anyone who knows him knows, his talents go far beyond that one character in that one show.

But I’m a Sex Addict: Babbitt Returns to Dark Comedy with Mixed Results
Though the film rests rather comfortably on the shoulders of its talented lead actresses, director Jamie Babbit’s latest, Addicted to Fresno, overreaches in its efforts to deliver an endearing yet cynical familial drama about two sisters maturing and growing closer together as they cover up an accidental murder. Written by talented television writer Karey Dornetto (“South Park,” “Portlandia”), here writing her first feature, a number of winning elements are present to constitute a successfully cynical dark comedy, but more often than not, a reliance on too many familiar narrative points tends to mish-mash the highs and lows into a mediocre black comedy. Fans of the notable cast members should find much to appreciate, though one is left with a curiously uninvolved feeling once the credits roll.

Many comedy fans were happy to hear the news last month that former "Fallon" writers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin were getting a half-hour HBO comedy pilot with Lorne Michaels serving as executive producer. Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the project has a director who's a familiar indie film world name. Jamie Babbit, whose breakout film was 1999's "But I'm a Cheerleader," will helm the still-untitled Atlanta-set pilot, slated to shoot this September. While Babbit's directed several films since "Cheerleader," including 2005's "The Quiet" and 2007 SXSW Competition winner "Itty Bitty Titty Committee," she's been much more active in television, directing episodes of everything from "Gilmore Girls" and "The L Word" to "Drop Dead Diva" and "United States of Tara." Babbit's latest feature, "Breaking the Girls," premiered at Frameline last month (where she also received the 2013 Frameline Award) and is getting a theatrical and VOD release from IFC...

Sony Pictures Classics Confirmed for ‘Smashed’; IFC Nabs ‘Grabbers’; Cinedigm Fights ‘Invisible War’
One month after we reported that Sony Pictures Classics were “on the verge of picking up” Smashed, Deadline has come in with a press release confirming this acquisition. As you may already know, the film at hand is a drama about the perils of alcoholism, which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aaron Paul, Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman, and Megan Mullaly, and is directed by James Ponsoldt. Our reaction out of Sundance was one of all-around positivity, with special notice going to Winstead‘s peformance; that’s the primary hook, as far as I’m concerned. Hearing that everything else works alongside it is icing on the cake, if you will.

In my opinion, Jamie Babbit's The Quiet is completely underrated. It was a much darker movie than it's predecessor, But I'm a Cheerleader, but it was an intense and moving portrait of a screwed up family as viewed by a teenage girl who would rather pretend to be deaf and mute than be a part of it.
Elisha Cuthbert was one of the film's stars, and she was at last night's TCA Winter Press Tour, promoting her new show, Happy Endings. I wanted to find out how she could go from her more dramatic work, like The Quiet, in which she stars as a young cheerleader who has a sexual relationship with her father, to an ABC comedy.
"Right now I'm all about comedy, and I kind of have been, but it took a lot of breaking down the doors to let me step into that whole world," Elisha said.

Mamas, don't let your girl babies grow up to be even slightly overweight. Because, it will be mentioned. It will be noticed. It will be commented upon.
I started reading the official description of this movie that just cast Kristen Bell and I kept getting stuck at the same point: The "script centers on an ambitious, slightly overweight ballerina..." Well there you have it, that's the information that is important - she's slightly overweight. The frack? Now we're not talking about an obese girl trying to become a ballerina and her weight is the one barrier, so she has to either lose the weight or overcome the stereotype to be what she wants to be. We don't get film descriptions of the slightly overweight boy who wants to be a dancer. And don't give me that crap about ballerinas having a certain image, because that just feeds into this whole...

Question: I loved But I'm a Cheerleader, and I have watched Itty Bitty Titty Committee ten times now. Enough already! When is Jamie Babbit's next movie coming out?
― Tina, Columbia, MD
Jamie Babbit
Answer: Did you check out Babbit's 2005 feature, The Quiet, starring Elisha Cuthbert, Camilla Belle and Edie Falco? If not, the cast alone should be enough to send you to the video store.
I passed your question along to Babbitt, who told me:
I'm currently casting for my new film called Breaking The Girl. It's tonally in the vein of Body Heat, with lots of bi beauties and femme fatales.
