"You bend reality to suit yourself." An official Us trailer has arrived for one of Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa's films from last year, titled Daguerrotype (properly spelled - Daguerreotype). The film first premiered at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival, and has been awaiting a Us release ever since. It goes under a few different titles - The Woman in the Silver Plate, or in France it's Le secret de la chambre noire, which translates roughly to The Secret of the Dark Room. French actor Tahir Rahim stars as a young apprentice in Paris, back in the days of daguerreotypes. He falls for the photographer's daughter, but they learn there's some kind of malevolent forces stopping them from escaping. The full cast includes Olivier Gourmet, Constance Rousseau, Mathieu Amalric, Malik Zidi, Valérie Sibilia. This seems like a strange film. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Daguerrotype, direct...

The history behind Natasha Romanoff's road to becoming Black Widow is a dark one. There are a lot of mysteries surrounding it, but Marvel has been revealing bits and pieces of it here and there in the movies and the comics.
Before Natasha was Black Widow and fighting with The Avengers, she was a deadly assassin who killed lots of people. In the latest issue of the Black Widow comic, we learn the story of her very first kill, and it's kinda messed up.
The comic is a thriller that centers on Natasha coming to terms with her dark past. It's being written by artist Chris Samnee and scribe Mark Waid. Below you'll find the panels from Black Widow #7 that tells the story. They come from io9, who also offers a breakdown of the story.
This is enough to make want to start reading this comic. It looks great and intriguing.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Photo courtesey of Film-in-evolution | Les Productions BalthazarGone are the glory days when Hollywood would identify and poach remarkable foreign (inevitably European) directors, enticing them with greater budgets and production capabilities. France, with its generous co-production financing, cannot compete with Hollywood of the 1930s, but half a decade ago they brought over a spate of our favorite East Asian auteurs to make several great films: Hou Hsiao-hsien (Flight of the Red Balloon), Hong Sang-soo (Night and Day) and Tsai Ming-liang (Visage). Now count Kiyoshi Kurosawa with that number. The Japanese director, best known for a cluster of haunting mysteries that coincided with the J-Horror trend and still conflated with that brief cultural moment, has made Daguerrotype, a haunted house gothic featuring French stars Tahar Rahim and Olivier Gourmet.Though often creeping towards horror—“thriller” might be more appropriate if his films didn’t move at an unsettling, dreamily...

DaguerrotypeDear Fern,I've heard a lot of mixed things here about Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time, so I'm very pleased at your enraptured praise. Did you know from the first moment that you liked it so much? Sometimes, in those rare special occasions, you know right off that a film is great. From the first shot of Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women, a grainy Montana landscape grayed by winter, with hills so soft in they could be painted on, and a train arcing its way towards the camera, it is clear this film is special. Based on stories by author Maile Meloy, the film takes the unusual form of a sequence of three stories, all set in small town Montana, and each foregrounded on a woman and her conflicted yearning.Laura Dern is a lawyer whose client (Jared Harris) in a dead-end malfeasance lawsuit gets increasingly dejected and unhinged...

Spirits of the Dead: Kurosawa Continues Ghostly Leitmotifs in First French Language Film
Japanese auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa makes a surprise venture into French language cinema with the intriguingly titled Daguerrotype (which is a better fit than its original English language moniker, The Woman in the Silver Plate, but in French is known as La Secret de la chamber noire, which is something more like The Secret of the Dark Room).

Our sometimes contributor Angelica Bastien wrote a great piece for Bright Wall / Dark Room called "The Grace of Keanu Reeves" in which she argues against the common dismissals of his acting ability. As a longtime fan of Keanu (Point Break/Private Idaho being the peak era of devotion) this was a joy to read.
One of her greatest points deals with "the crossroads of virile and vulnerable, territory previously charted by actors as legendary as Montgomery Clift, James Dean, and Paul Newman. But there's a difference.
These actors often seem to fight against the lustful gaze of the camera, while Keanu supplants himself to it. Where they seem cynical, disinterested, or too wounded as a romantic lead, Keanu is utterly open.

LatinoBuzz: Winners of 33rd Edition CineMart Include Academy Award-Nominee Ciro Guerra's New Project
The CineMart 2016 awards have been announced marking the close of the 33rd edition of the co-production market. German production "Berlin Alexanderplatz" was awarded the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award of €20,000, which is given to a project presented by a European producer. Colombian production "Birds of Passage" was awarded the €6,000 Arte International Prize and the Wouter Barendrecht Award went to Christopher Radcliff’s new project "The Strange Ones." The prize of €5,000 is given by the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation. The jury for the Arte and Eurimages awards is comprised of the Netherlands Film Fund’s Dorien van de Pas, producer Annamaria Lodato and Fabien Westerhoff, head of international licensing, production and finance company Ffwd (formerly with Hanway and WestEnd). The Wouter Barendrecht Award is decided on by representatives of the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation, Nelleke and Ellis Driessen.
CineMart selected 25 international projects to participate in the four day event which has been one of the most successful in recent years. Multiple conferences and panels covering topics ranging from “Making the most of a film festival” to “The Micro-Budget Talent Programmes” were held in front of packed audiences who were invited to be involved in the debates and receive advice. Mike S. Ryan (Greyshack Films), Michael Weber (The Match Factory), Winnie Lau (Jettone Films Ltd) and Bero Beyer (Director Iffr) discussing ‘The Creative Thunder of Cinema’ proved one of the highlights of Iffr 2016.
On making the announcement, Head of Industry and CineMart, Marit van den Elshout commented: “This year’s line-up was exceptional and inspiring. I speak on behalf of the entire team when I say that we could not be more proud – we have seen so many great projects, and so many talented teams behind them, the winners really exemplify this. I am also pleased to say that we hosted multiple extremely well attended panels and conversations, discussing the current state and possible future of the cinema that we love and cherish in Rotterdam.”
This year’s Eurimages Co-Production Development Award winner, "Berlin Alexanderplatz" by Burhan Qurbani (Germany) is a Sommerhaus Filmproduktion production. On the jury’s decision, Dorien van de Pas commented: “The project gives us a new and relevant view on a classic piece. The talented director has already made several films about urgent and relevant topics, that currently affect all our countries. Here he will combine elements of genre film with more political and emotional layers, which makes it accessible for a younger audience. The project leads to an ideal co-production scenario and the money of this award will be well employed for casting and further development.”
The Arte International Prize winner is "Birds of Passage" (Colombia) by Ciro Guerra, who is currently nominated for the Best Foreign Language Academy Award for "Embrace of the Serpent," produced by Ciudad Lunar Producciones and Blond Indian Films. On presenting the award, Annemaria Lodato commented: “We decided to give the Arte International Prize to a young South American filmmaker who has already produced a strong and convincing body of work. The project takes us into the heart of an indigenous community, a time and place never explored on screen.”
The Wouter Barendrecht Award winner is "The Strange Ones" (USA), directed by Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein, produced by Sébastien Aubert. "Mysterious events surround the travels of two brothers as they make their way across a remote American landscape. On the surface all seems normal, but what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to something more complex, dark, and potentially deadly." On presenting the award Managing Director of Fortissimo Films, Nelleke Driessen commented: “The short film on which this film project is based, convinced the jury of the potential for the feature. We trust that the makers will succeed to translate this apparent simple story into an intriguing, multi layered psychological thriller.”
Hbf+Europe Distribution Support for International Co-productions
Next to these awards, Iffr’s Hubert Bals Fund is proud to announce the first selection of its brand-new distribution scheme: Hbf+Europe Distribution Support for International Co-productions. The scheme is designed to boost the distribution of internationally co-produced films from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe.
The Hbf is pleased to announce that the first Hbf+Europe Distribution grant of 20.000 Euro has been awarded to Heretic Outreach from Greece to support the distribution of "Babai" by Visar Morina (Kosovo, Germany, Macedonia and France) in Greece, Bulgaria and Egypt.

Dontnod is ready to conclude the poignant, time-bending story of Chloe and Max late next month, after publisher Square Enix revealed today that Life is Strange Episode 5: Polarized will release across console platforms and PC on October 20.
That release date is by no means final, according to the developer, who noted that it made the announcement earlier than usual in order to commemorate Max’s birthday. Setting a tentative target of late October is still achievable, however, with Dontnod’s Producer Luc revealing that development is “almost completed.”
We don’t normally announce a date until we know the game is 100% ready but in the spirit of Max’s birthday (today) we wanted to let you know early that we are aiming to release Episode 5 ‘Polarized’ October 20.
Many things can change in the lead up to release but the team are working really hard to try and hit this date.

When Life is Strange Episode 4: Dark Room was downloading I knew that it would be a tough one to get through. I made certain choices that pushed my game a certain way, and now I had to face them. Without giving away spoilers, I’d saw we were taught that messing with time has consequences, and this was going to be the episode where we were going to have to face them.
Upon starting the game, dealing with the emotions is the first thing that you and Max, the main character, have to face. Surprisingly (or not) we have to deal with an even more impactful kick to the gut with a choice that is one of the most poignant you’ll ever face in a game. Dontnod Entertainment, the developers of the game, have to be applauded for the fact that they’ve managed to get you so...

When we last assumed the role of Ms. Max Caulfield, the young photography student was still gripping with her emotions after saving a friend from committing suicide. However, while that would be enough for one person to go through, Max wasn’t able to take it easy or seek help from a licensed professional. Instead, she and her friend Chloe Price forced themselves to continue the search for another unfortunate soul, that being missing Rachel Amber. After all, her disappearance is the backbone that holds the girls’ attention in Dontnod’s Life is Strange, a game that has cemented itself as one of the best episodic experiences out there.
Of course, Max’s struggles don’t start or end with her friend’s mental health or her worry about the missing Blackwell Academy student, as there’s something special about our young heroine. That is, her ability to rewind time...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Guardians of the Galaxy Easter Eggs, Trivia and References” — Andrew Dyce at Screen Rant digs into Marvel’s latest to share some context and little things you might have missed. “The 10 best summer romances in film” — Guy Lodge at The Guardian proves we’ve been falling in love while sweating for almost a century, compiling a list that’s a bit more insider than populist. On #6: “Robert Mulligan knew the elegiac nature of an American summer: there’sTo Kill a Mockingbird, of course, but he also made a pretty good lunge for this list with the liltingly scored wartime weepie Summer of ’42. His final and most undervalued film, The Man in the Moon, combines the latter’s Rockwell romanticism with a measure of Harper Lee’s tough love – it conveys the full...

Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Broadcasting Beautiful Views 24 Hours a Day: You’re Tuned To The Scenery Channel” — Michelle Said at Bright Wall/Dark Room uses Back to the Future II and a personal time capsule to tell a story of growing up toward an idyllic 2015 that was really a two-tied nightmare. “Kevin Smith’s Clerks follow-up was equally true to his vulgar soul” — Nathan Rabin at The Dissolve looks at the homemade career of Kevin Smith through the third nipple of his sophomore effort. “Why I refuse to watch movies without spoilers” — Esther Inglis-Arkell at io9 apparently hates taking journeys without knowing the destination ahead of time. Words fail. A fascinating piece that’s like reading an alien’s diary entry.

One of the most powerful war stories to appear on screen. A story of the universal defeat of war and the enduring survival of the human spirit. Written by director Cate Shortland and Robin Mukherjee and based on the novel .The Dark Room. by Rachel Seiffert, .Lore. tells a story of wartime heartbreak and betrayal. The betrayal is that of the German people by the Nazi Third Reich. As amazing as it seems, the average German citizen revered Adolph Hitler as a patriot and statesman, until the truth came out after the defeat of Germany at the hands of the Allies. Lore stars Saskia Rosendahl as Lore, Nele Trebs as her younger sister Liesel and André Frid as one of...

There is an expression, "A mother's love is forever," and this could not be more true. However, when looking back through our favorite horror movies, another expression comes to mind: "A face only a mother could love."
In celebration of the upcoming film Mama, directed by Andrés Muschietti and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, creator of Pan's Labyrinth, we decided to take a walk down memory lane and honor the top scariest, freakiest kids in horror. And there are some real doozies out there with truly a face only a mother could love!
Let's warm up with some horrible mentions. The young Drew Barrymore certainly fit the bill of creepy kid in her unforgettable role of Charlie McGee in Firestarter. As did the pumpkinheaded little monster, Sam, in Trick r Treat. (He counts, right? He's definitely child-like). Glen/Glenda, Chucky's seed in Seed of Chucky, was skin-crawlingly strange, and...

When you enter the Dark Room of writer and director David Byrne, it’s like entering one of those video games from the 80s with all the ringing sound effects and green blinking typeface included.
The Dark Room presented by Pit, a multi-award winning theatre company, is truly a visual experience. The direction is clever and tricks the audience with its polished choreography. Actors pop out from behind rolling blackboards and spin around on old school wooden desks. The blackboards, desks, digital backdrop and live music make up the minimalist scenery of this play.
According to Byrne, the writing is partly inspired by Brecht’s The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui ,where a depression era Chicago is taken over by Hitler and his gang of thugs. In this play the gang is made up of two bullies the new girl at school, Ruth, played brilliantly by...

Lisa the mail carrier got curious when she looked inside Brian's car and found the Bible on tape. She thinks of herself as a "very sexual" person. Would his spirituality get in the way of her sex life?
In a word: Yes. Brian says he's a "passionate" guy, but when it comes to sex, he's waiting for the one. Lisa's response? A giggle-fest. Watch what happens:...

When groundbreaking series Dating in the Dark premiered on Living last summer it wasn’t just viewers who couldn’t stop talking about the audacious televised experiment in the nature of attraction. This week a short film by Carl Erik Rinsch has been circulating the Internet (via /Film) as part of Philips’ “Parallel Lines” advertising campaign and partnership with Ridley Scott Associates. Rinsch’s short film “The Gift” blends science fiction elements of a CGI robotic servant, a mysterious box, a futuristic Russian dystopia, and a pre-selected piece of dialogue used by all the participating directors.
Heat Vision is reporting a “bidding war” has begun between several studios, including Warner Bros and Fox, who see a potential full-length feature from the material. Speculation is the rights will go to Fox, who has a long-time relationship with Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott.
The fight over Rinsch’s less than 5-minute clip has some wondering “Is this the next District 9?” after Neill Blomkamp’s short YouTube film became a successful feature with the help of Peter Jackson. A similar deal last...

Heidi Montag was rushed to a hospital Saturday in Costa Rica after allegedly staying with husband Spencer Pratt in "isolation" in a dark room for the NBC reality show "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!"
According to her sister-in-law, Stephanie Pratt, the couple stayed in a dark room without food or water.
She said via Twitter: "[Heidi was] rushed to the hospital and has an IV in her arm after being locked in a dark room for 3 days w no food or water. Pls pray she will be ok." [sic]
The dark room treatment was apparently a punishment for leaving and wanting to return to the show. TMZ reports that Heidi was diagnosed with gastric ulcer.

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - After a night of partying that included stops at the W hotel in Westwood and a small get-together at Adrian Grenier's house, Lindsay Lohan spent the rest of the night searching for ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson. Photographers followed Lindsay's white Mazaratti as she cruised around spots where Ronson usually hangs out. "The car stopped at places where Sam frequents such as Dark Room on Melrose, The Bar on Sunset and Bronson and then up to Beachwood to Sam's house. Nobody got out of the car, and after driving all over Los Angeles, the car finally returned to Lindsay's house. It seemed like this was a desperate attempt on Lindsay's part to find out where Sam was," an X17online photographer said. Eventually Lindsay returned to her home in West Hollywood. It seems to me that suspense is in danger of becoming something of a lost art in modern American horror. Sure there have been exceptions, but too many recent films fail to realize their true potential when it comes to lingering and unrelenting tension.
