Betty White’s career ran through practically the entire history of television. And before White died on Dec. 31 at the age of 99, her longevity was a tribute not merely to persistence but to the willingness of a classic Hollywood talent to be versatile and to adapt.
In moving from television in the 1940s and ’50s to late-in-life media stardom on contemporary sitcoms and on “Saturday Night Live” (with some plum movie roles in between), White was perennially able to shift gears. She brought the best of an irreducible public persona — sparkling and witty, even or especially as dim or deluded characters — to a breadth of projects that offered her chances to show different sides of her talent. Her gifts recalled the best of an era of Hollywood in which charm reigned supreme; placing those gifts in a modern context provided a counterpoint that keeps fans fascinated by White practically to the century mark.

The first round of 2014 Emmy Awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony on Saturday (August 16) night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which precedes the Monday, August 25 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, offered signs of hope for a number of drama and comedy hopefuls. Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black," for example, won Emmys for editing, series casting and for Uzo Aduba, who is considered a guest actress for the purposes of these awards. No other comedy series was able to build any other momentum going into next week's show, with "The Big Bang Bang Theory," "Nurse Jackie," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" grabbing isolated tech prizes and Jimmy Fallon winning the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for the second time in three years for his "Saturday Night Live" hosting duties. Once again Louie dared visit a topic that TV has otherwise avoided by acknowledging that men use sex toys. Jokes about women’s vibrators have become commonplace, but a similar joke about men is acknowledging a truth that’s mostly ignored. It was a brilliant bit for the season opener, with the kind of brutal honesty that makes Louie one of TV’s best comedies.
Damon Wayans Jr. will be a series regular on the fourth season of New Girl. Now that that’s been taken care of, when can we get some kind of Happy Endings reunion?
A month ahead of the debut of its second season, Netflix has ordered a third season of Orange is the New Black.
Kristian Nairn talked with Vulture and said what had to be said about Hodor‘s potential as king, “I don’t think Hodor could be any worse than Joffrey.

Ferguson will walk away with the longest run as Late Late Show host, having been on the show for ten years, beating Tom Snyder‘s four years and Craig Kilborn‘s five (yes, just five, it only felt like it would never end). At least four late night talk shows (both of CBS’ shows, The Colbert Report and Chelsea Lately) will be different next year. So far we only know who will take over one of those shows.

When PBS's "Pioneers of Television" returns for its fourth round of retrospectives of various classic TV genres and the casts and creative teams behind some of the most famous and influential programs of all time, the first new installment -- airing tonight at 8pm -- will delve into the various stand-up comedians who successfully made the jump from telling jokes onstage into full-fledged sitcom stardom. There's a long list of folks included in this particular category, but there's no question that Bob Newhart is one of the most successful, having had sitcom success in the '70s ("The Bob Newhart Show"), the '80s ("Newhart"), the '90s ("Bob and George & Leo") and, only last year, earning his first-ever Emmy Award for his guest appearance on "The Big Bang Theory." PBS assembled Jimmie Walker, George Takei, Bob Newhart, Ray Romano, and Leslie Uggams for a panel on the network’s “Pioneers of Television” — a medium that might have been very different without them. The five changed TV in ways great and small. Newhart’s changes, like his comedy, were nuanced and quiet. Takei skewered notions of bad Asian drivers, among others. Uggams added to diversity behind the camera. Walker helped set a model for sitcoms and comedians alike. And Romano finally got New Yorkers their due. (Okay, his contribution is a little more complicated than that.) Also read: ‘Dyn-o-mite!’: Jimmie Walker and.

Special From Next Avenue
By John Stark
The golden era of the TV miniseries lasted from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. They couldn’t go on much longer. They required attention spans (you remember those).
Even "Downton Abbey," which is kind of like a miniseries, moves faster than the winner of the Ascot Derby. You’re constantly being yanked from one plot line to another. Blink and you’ve missed a death, birth, murder, marriage, poisoning, bankruptcy, bombing, jilting at the altar, you name it. A lot goes on in that castle in an hour.
In contrast, a miniseries took its time. Stories unfolded slowly. There was real character development. Most miniseries were adapted from sprawling novels. They were huge in scope. Multigenerational. Thanks to advances in makeup, you saw actors realistically age in their parts, from young to middle age to old.
The miniseries required serious viewer commitment.

NBC has found a star for its Ironside remake, adding Blair Underwood to the cast. I have to admit that makes me a lot more interested in Ironside.
MTV has ordered a semi-scripted comedy pilot about a Kardashian-style family, according to Deadline. I have a feeling this purchase was heavily influenced by the success of another partially-improvised reality TV parody, The Real Husbands of Hollywood.
In what sounds like a nightmarish combination, CBS has ordered a pilot starring Robin Williams created by David E. Kelley. Crazy Ones would follow a father/daughter advertising team. It's got crazy in the title, so you know this will feature Williams and Kelley at their least restrained.
Unsurprisingly, Thailand's culture minister is upset with Saturday Night Live for a fake ad making fun of the country's sex tourism.

How big a deal was the miniseries "Roots" when it was first broadcast on ABC in 1977? "They closed the casinos in Vegas when 'Roots' aired," explains cast member John Amos. "Nobody was on the streets." In this exclusive clip from the final episode of this season of PBS' "Pioneers of Television," Amos, LeVar Burton, Leslie Uggams and others talk about the incredible impact and reach that "Roots" had, as part of the upcoming "Miniseries" episode. Narrated by Ryan Seacrest, "Pioneers of Television" explores the people and the shows that have shaped the medium of TV into what it is today. The "Miniseries" episodes, which airs on PBS on Tuesday, February 5th at 8pm, will be the fourth and final episode of a third season that's also explored comediennes, primetime soaps and superheroes.

If Daugherty looks familiar to you, it might be because he appeared on Days of Our Lives as the guy who had an interest in Sonny just when Will wasn't sure how out he could be on? You know, the guy who made us question our loyalty to WilSon before that story could get going? (Our interview with Brant Daugherty here.)

I've been watching the right try to claim that Downton Abbey is a conservative show. Jonah Goldberg wrote about it a couple weeks back and now Fox & Friends repeated that Downton challenges how "rich people... are reviled". Wow. That just says so much about how little they pay attention to everything. I'll be willing to consider that idea when Lord Grantham orders Mrs. Patmore to start using questionable ingredients when she cooks for the staff so that he can afford to have fancier wines with dinner.
Fox's ads for The Following broke a rule for television and asked viewers to watch the show on the DVR. Vulture explains what this means and how its another step in changing how viewers watch TV and how the industry responds to it.

PBS' "Pioneers of Television" is back for its third season this month -- now narrated by one of today's busiest personalities in that business, Ryan Seacrest -- with four new episodes devoted to some of the most memorable moments and people in popular TV genres.
"Funny Ladies," which kicks off the run of new episodes Tuesday, Jan. 15, begins with the first female comedians to appear on television, including Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller, whose final interview was for this episode. It also looks at Lucille Ball's breakthrough on "I Love Lucy" and the female sitcom stars who followed, including Mary Tyler Moore, Betty White and Marla Gibbs.
Cloris Leachman -- who is one of the funniest ladies in television history and is also featured in this episode -- speaks to the nature of being able to make people laugh versus more dramatic acting roles.
"Each one is important," she tells Zap2it.

If I counted right, you can hear Betty White say "I'm the luckiest broad on two feet" at least three times during the course of the "Funny Ladies" retrospective that kicks off a new season of PBS' Pioneers of Television (check tvguide.com listings). Who could or would want to doubt her? The evidence is right there in clips and stills from this living legend's earliest TV appearances in the 1940s and '50s, establishing her as a versatile broadcaster and gung-ho performer even before Lucille Ball made us fall in love with her — and blazing a trail for all who would follow.

Speaking to the TCA, PBS President Paula Kerger was asked about the delay between the debut of Downton Abbey in the UK and their debut on PBS. Unfortunately, Kerger replied that January seems like a good time for the show. In other words, U.S. fans should expect to spend more time avoiding spoilers.
My first reaction to reading TMZ's report that Ann Romney turned down Dancing with the Stars was a hostile eye roll, but after a little thought I'm a little sad we won't get to see what kind of Saturday Night Live gold Kate McKinnon could turn that into.
Is an ad boasting "Enough episodes of Glee to make you question your sexuality" homophobic? Jezebel isn't sure. Honestly, it gave me a chuckle but Glee is its own universe when it comes to determining context.

The Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press Tour kicked off this weekend with PBS taking the first two days to preview their programming for the fall and winter. While the PBS days are notoriously the quieter days in the 2-week cavalcade of the networks trotting out their new shows, there was quite an excited buzz that was in the air when the cast and creative team of Downton Abbey turned up for a panel to talk about the upcoming third season, which premieres in January on PBS.
The panel, in the room of awestruck TV critics at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, featured Emmy nominees Brendan Coyle (Bates), Joanne Froggatt (Anna), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) and Hugh Bonneville (Robert) along with Elizabeth McGovern (Cora) and new cast member Shirley MacLaine (Martha) as well as Executive Producer Gareth Neame and creator Julian Fellowes.

"The Thorn Birds" stars Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward reunited for the first time since the 1983 ABC miniseries, save for a passing incident.
Chamberlain played Ralph de Bricassart, a priest in a small town who fell in love with Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward) in the TV drama. Even though they played two characters in love, the pair only saw each other once in an airport before Sunday night at the "Pioneers of Television" Season 3 presentation at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.
"We did run into each other very briefly in an airport in Thailand," Chamberlain said via Access Hollywood. "We were working on the same project, but we didn't have scenes together. Rachel was just leaving town and I was just coming in and we met in the airport for about 10 minutes and it was so great to see you."
The short meeting hardly compared to their reunion on Sunday.

If you really care about someone, chances are they don't need an overpriced teddy bear holding a heart shaped pillow to know it, and if you think that buying some schmaltzy piece of mall jewelry designed by that lady who was on that angel show is going to make up for not being affectionate the rest of the year, I feel sorry for your imminent rude awakening.
