Exclusive: Twilight star Taylor Lautner, Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland, Four Weddings and a Funeral actress Andie MacDowell and Brenton Thwaites are boarding the Natalie Simpkins directed romantic comedy The Token Groomsman which is launching global sales in Cannes.
Project follows career-focused Scott (Lautner) who has hit rock bottom at work when he finds himself invited to be a groomsman at an elite, luxury, destination wedding. The only problem is he doesn’t remember who the groom is! Enticed by the rich and powerful, and hoping to make some new business connections, Scott jets off to Italy planning to blend in and quickly cash out. But when sparks unexpectedly fly with the groom’s sister Mia (Hyland), Scott has to decide between “closing the deal” for money, or for love. Simpkins, John C. Hall, and Sohale Andrus Mortazavi penned the screenplay off a story by Hall.

Hugh Grant is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood, and his perfect combination of wit and charm only makes it more understandable why. Needless to say, his very charming personality and physical features are also the reason why a lot of the roles he has donned have been in rom-coms. But even through those rom-coms, Grant has displayed quite a bit of action.

However, one time, this display of action in a similar ruthless manner as Tom Cruise almost ended up killing him. This happened in the iconic film that set him up as the King of rom-coms and is still regarded as a masterpiece, Four Weddings and a Funeral. But that isn’t the only surprising fact, because Grant was actually never the first choice to play the protagonist in that movie!

Hugh Grant was one of the quintessential rom-com leading men of the 90s among the likes of Richard Gere and Leonardo DiCaprio. He was a popular heartthrob who managed to impress fans with his natural charm and his nonchalant humor. His roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and Love Actually made audiences swoon in the 90s and early 2000s.
Hugh Grant as William Thacker in Notting Hill
Another one of Grant’s popular films was 2002’s Two Weeks Notice where he was paired with Sandra Bullock. The duo had met five years prior and they had discussed working together. But Grant made a pretty bad impression on Bullock by narrating what he calls a ‘disgusting story’, which led to Grant not hearing from the actress for over 3 years.

Exclusive: Channel 4 has delivered the verdict on which of its biggest 2023 entertainment launches have landed a second season.
Tempting Fortune, the Paddy McGuinness-hosted adventure reality series, has been given the greenlight for a supersized second season, although U.S. co-pro partner Roku is no longer involved. Danny Dyer-hosted Scared of the Dark, in which celebrities are locked in a pitch-black space for a week, will no longer be seeing the light of day and has been axed.
The move ends a several-months-long period of speculation over which major 2023 launches would be given the nod for Season 2 during which Channel 4 also culled Studio Lambert’s Traitors-esque Rise and Fall and its version of U.S. History channel hit Alone, the latter revealed by Deadline last week.

Update, 2.58am, April 18: Hugh Grant has explained his decision to settle in his privacy case with the publisher of Rupert Murdoch’s tabloid The Sun, saying civil litigation rules in the UK forced his hand.
In a thread on social media, he wrote: “I don’t want to accept this money or settle. I would love to see all the allegations that they deny tested in court. But the rules around civil litigation mean that if I proceed to trial and the court awards me damages that are even a penny less than the settlement offer, I would have to pay the legal costs of both sides.
“My lawyers tell me that that is exactly what would most likely happen here. Rupert Murdoch’s lawyers are very expensive. So even if every allegation is proven in court, I would still be liable for something approaching £10 million in costs. I...

Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff are relatable and startlingly easy on the eye in this likable tale that’s carrying slightly too much plot luggage
The maxim “expect little, forgive much” is apparently how to approach marriage; it may be a little depressing in real life, but it’s not a bad rule for movie romcoms, a genre in which, for whatever reason, the bar is extraordinarily low. For every His Girl Friday or When Harry Met Sally or Four Weddings, there are thousands of direct-to-streaming timewasters; if the films’ frequent lesson is that you’ll have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince, it also applies to the films themselves.
Happily, this will-they-won’t-they between two adorable wedding guests (Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff) may not feature an actual prince, he’s closer to a handsome dude in a crown than a lil fella on a lily-pad; by romcom standards,...

Exclusive: A producer wryly tells us that they arrived to Channel 4 HQ in late 2023 to discover a boarded-up front, feeling their way around to a narrow door on the side of the building “where there stands a huge f***ing bouncer.”
If ever there was a metaphor for the British broadcaster’s relations with the indie sector in recent months, surely this is it. After pulling up the commissioning drawbridge and passing on the financial pain of a disturbingly prolonged ad crisis, producers have oscillated between rage and disillusionment when the subject of Channel 4 rears its head.
There has been an inescapable sense that Channel 4 has not been listening to the concerns of its suppliers, even if this is hotly disputed by the broadcaster itself. But the mood music has now changed. Channel 4 is, for the first time, publicly acknowledging that it must share in the pain being felt by producers.

Channel 4 is compiling a plan to enact its biggest round of layoffs in more than 15 years, with up to 200 staff potentially in line to be let go. The figure would represent around 17% of the network’s overall headcount.
According to The Guardian, which broke the news, Channel 4 head honchos have been working on the plan since late last year, with a view to doubling down on digital streaming while acknowledging linear difficulties and trying to keep its circa-£700M ($887M) content budget steady as it battles against economic forces.
“Like every organisation, we are having to deal with an extremely uncertain economy in the short term and the need to accelerate our transformation to become a wholly digital public service broadcaster in the long term,” a spokeswoman said. “As a result, we need to continue to divest from our linear channels business and simplify our operations to become a leaner organisation.

Channel 4 is in “market shock territory” and may finally look to use its £75M ($94M) revolving credit facility next year, according to CEO Alex Mahon.
Mahon faced a barrage of questions about the embattled Gogglebox broadcaster’s finances from the Culture, Media & Sport Committee this morning and was at pains to stress how bad the ad market has been this year and its impact on Channel 4.
In line with rivals, she said Channel 4 hasn’t seen predicted recoveries in H2 or Q4 of 2023 and revenues will likely be down around 8% for 2023, while the channel expects to post a deficit following three years of surplus.
“We are in what I would probably call market shock territory,” she told MPs. “This level of ad fall was only deeper in the 2008 recession.”

This bafflingly bland offering wastes the talents of Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu – it’s as if they removed the laughs in case they offend
Screenwriter Richard Curtis is a cinema colossus with nothing left to prove: he reinvented the romcom with transatlantic classics like Four Weddings, Notting Hill and The Tall Guy; he re-energised charitable giving with Comic Relief; and even those of us who never signed up to Love Actually concede the dark power of the Emma Thompson-crying scene. But we really do not need this new Christmas film from him, an unremittingly awful, bafflingly terrible and defanged bit of seasonal gibberish: a fantasy comedy which forgets to put in gags and which cheats its own narrative rules. Watching it is like trailing around a year-round Christmas market in March.

The 2023 edition of the Edinburgh TV Festival is drawing to a close after four days of intense industry talks, gossip and Louis Theroux lectures. The halls of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre were buzzing as UK execs, creatives and talent took the chance to get together and talk shop. Here we outline six key themes that emerged.
“Ripple effect” of the strikes
No TV industry confab would be complete at present without a bit of strike chatter. As the writers strike moves way beyond 100 days and the actors’ action rumbles on, the “ripple effects” continue to be felt around the world, according to Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s new Drama Director. There was a small American presence at Edinburgh plus numerous UK commmissioners from the U.S. streamers’ hubs but, somewhat surprisingly, the labor action was not raised during panel sessions with both Netflix and Disney execs. Universal’s Pearlena Igbokwe,...

Channel 4 has “perhaps been a bit more honest” than its rivals about the recent commissioning slowdown, according to programs boss Ian Katz, who said there has been a “perception” that his network’s financial picture is “more dramatic than elsewhere.”
Katz was grilled at the Edinburgh TV Festival about its heavily-reported commissioning slowdown and the exec said Channel 4 has “perhaps been a bit more honest” about financial woes than other broadcasters, all of whom he claimed have been impacted.
He blamed the slowdown on the ad revenue slump, the U.S. strikes and “streamers pulling billions from their budgets” and said that much of the press around Channel 4 canceling shows due to its own financial picture is “not true” but was due to the natural cycle.
“The commissioning slowdown has hit the whole industry and every commercial broadcaster has been affected by the ad revenue slump,” he said. “Other...

The Four Weddings and a Funeral screenplay writer didn’t want actor Hugh Grant in the starring role of the film because he was too handsome.
Writer Richard Curtis actively campaigned against Grant in the lead role of Charles, a floppy-haired young professional whose fear of commitment turns to love for a certain wedding guest. Curtis had nothing against Grant, but he didn’t envision him as Charles who has a history of being a serial dater.
“I was worried about it. When Hugh did first come in, I did think he was too handsome. I thought people would not believe the fact he was in trouble with girls because he so clearly wouldn’t be. So that’s why he pushed the sort of doubtfulness and lack of confidence,” he told Daily Mail.

Channel 4 is developing a version of The Food Network’s sabotage cooking show Cutthroat Kitchen.
According to The Sun, the UK broadcaster is working with Warner Bros.-owned First Dates indie Twenty Twenty on a version of the show that ran for 15 seasons in the U.S. A Channel 4 insider said the show is still in the development stage and has not been officially greenlit.
Hosted by Alton Brown, Cutthroat Kitchen ran in the U.S. for 15 seasons and nearly 200 episodes across four years on the Food Network. It features four chefs competing in a three-round elimination cooking competition with a twist – they are given $25,000 at the start and face auctions in which they can purchase opportunities to ‘sabotage’ one another. The last person standing keeps whatever money they have not spent in the auctions.

Christmas Actually is coming to London.
Richard Curtis announced the news via a BBC interview this morning but stressed that the variety show, which is running from the 7 to 11 December at London’s Royal Festival Hall, is not a sequel to his hit rom-com Christmas pic Love Actually.
Christmas Actually will feature live music, performance, poetry and comedy, and will be in aid of Comic Relief, the high-profile charity that Curtis founded in 1985.
The celebrated writer-director will curate Christmas Actually and told the BBC audiences could expect it to be “noisy and emotional and full of surprises and jokes, with some proper celebrity sparkle”.
“I remember I didn’t always love the Christmas shows I took my children to, but I always took them to one,” Curtis added. “So we thought it would be fun to make a show for Christmas that really is fun for all the family.”

Exclusive: Channel 4’s content chief Ian Katz has acknowledged that the UK broadcaster and producers are going through a difficult spell amid widespread discontent over show cancelations and cash flow issues.
In an email to producers on Wednesday, Katz said he appreciated the support of indies, which supply all of Channel 4’s programming, but warned of more pain to come.
Deadline first revealed that shows including Four Weddings had been axed at the eleventh hour, while other content is being delayed until next year. In a story last week, we reported on Channel 4 requesting that indies cash flow shows at late notice, which is seen as unprecedented by some producers.
Katz’s message is an attempt to calm a revolt of sorts, with Channel 4 downturn dominating conversations between UK producers. The issue has been exacerbated by Channel 4’s top executives being rewarded with six-figure retention bonuses, which they have decided to defer.

Exclusive: Channel 4 has axed documentary series Rescue: Extreme Medics after two seasons.
A Channel 4 spokesman said the decision is unrelated to Channel 4’s much-publicized current financial woes but was instead taken due to ratings and the desire to open up space in the schedules.
Running for two seasons, Rescue from Firecrest Films followed elite clinicians saving lives across the whole of Scotland, sometimes in extremely challenging situations. Episodes in the latest series, which ended last week, included a rally driver crash on the Isle of Mull and an air ambulance having to attend a high-speed road collision. The latest series was watched by an average of around 600,000 overnight viewers per episode and ended with a series high of just shy of 1M, according to Barb data from overnights.tv.
Reports swirled over the weekend about the latest set of Channel 4 cancellations, with Rescue rumored to be culled alongside established hit Naked Attraction.

Exclusive: Channel 4’s top executives have indefinitely deferred their six-figure loyalty bonuses amid a revolt from producers, who have voiced dismay at the British broadcaster pleading poverty as senior leaders pocket record pay packets.
Deadline can reveal that Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon and her two top lieutenants, content chief Ian Katz and commercial head Jonathan Allan, will forgo bonuses of more than £100,000 until the company has navigated its way through a chastening ad market slump.
The so-called “retention bonus” was introduced to stop rank-and-file staff fleeing Channel 4 as the government attempted to sell the crown jewel of UK broadcasting. The reward was extended to executive directors last September, meaning their salary would have been topped up by 25% in addition to any performance-related pay.

Exclusive: Channel 4 is resting Sas: Who Dares Wins for the foreseeable future as it “shifts focus” to the celebrity version.
An extended eight-episode run of Celebrity Sas will start filming in the coming weeks but the original ‘civilian’ version, which most recently aired its eighth season, will likely not return to screens for some time, if at all.
A Channel 4 spokesman said the decision was being made “due to the huge success of Celebrity Sas” and insiders stressed the move isn’t being made for cost-cutting reasons.
“We have shifted our focus to prioritise this strand,” added the spokesman. “As a result, a longer run eight part series is due to commence filming in the summer whilst ‘Civilian’ Sas will be rested.”
The latest season of Minnow Films’ ‘civilian’ version finished in February and was watched by around 1.5M viewers per episode, while last year’s celebrity version secured approximately 2M for each instalment.

Exclusive: Channel 4 has abruptly cancelled its Four Weddings reboot in a move that has had the industry speculating over the state of the network’s finances amidst declining ad revenues and an economic downturn.

ITV Studios-backed MultiStory Media was producing the reboot and it was commissioned several weeks ago, with production due to take place over the summer. Freelancers have instead been given a compensation package for a two-week notice period, we understand.

Richard Curtis does not plan to write any more films. The 66-year-old screenwriter is famous for penning romantic comedies such as 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Love Actually' but has ruled out writing another movie as he finds his work repetitive.Richard told Jon Snow on the Snowcast: "I'm not sure I'll ever write another film because I like other people's films more than mine now."I remember the shock when I saw 'Notting Hill'. I thought, 'Oh my God it's exactly the same film as 'Four Weddings!'"Curtis – who also had TV hits with 'Blackadder' and 'The Vicar of Dibley' – admits that he was left exasperated by the way his films were marketed. He said: "When I see trailers for my movies, everything's in the wrong order, they give away the plots, they use shots that aren't in the film.

Sarah Jessica Parker has starred in a variety of films with a career that’s thrived for decades. There was one film she did in her earlier years she thought would be a game-changer. Unfortunately, it turned out to be anything but.
Why Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t see herself as a movie star Sarah Jessica Parker | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Parker’s most iconic role may arguably be Carrie Bradshaw in the popular Sex and the City series. But the actor’s career went beyond the television show. She entered the business as a child actor, and went on to feature in several movies like Footloose and Honeymoon in Vegas.
Despite her notable filmography at the time, Parker didn’t see herself becoming a movie star. If only because she didn’t see herself drawn to the types of films movie stars would make.

Pre-release jitters can get the best of anyone. Just ask Hugh Grant.
He had some trepidation about “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” his breakout movie, prior to its release. That’s according to his friend Sam Neill, who wrote in his upcoming memoir “Did I Ever Tell You This?” about some comments that Grant made before the film premiered, with a bit of his trademark British self-deprecation

Hugh Grant laughed about his infamous 1995 sex scandal with the hosts of US talk show The View on Thursday (16 March).
Grant was arrested by Los Angeles police for participating in “lewd conduct” in a public place with a sex worker named Divine Brown. He was in a long-term relationship with actor/model Liz Hurley at the time.
On The View, host Sunny Hostin asked the 62-year-old actor about his campaigns against the British tabloid press.
“Everyone thinks, ‘Oh, well he’s just bitter because he got arrested with a hooker in 1995,’” Grant said to riotous laughter from the hosts and studio audience.
Hostin’s co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected: “But you know what, really, who hasn’t?”
The actor then continued: “But actually it had nothing to do with that because that was never uncovered by tabloids. It was that the bloody police gave everyone the information. It was nothing to do with that.

Independent Entertainment, the production and sales banner that was behind last year’s Harry Styles-starrer My Policeman, has boarded This Modern Love, a romantic comedy based on the critically acclaimed play Leave to Remain by Matt Jones (The Split) and Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, with Four Weddings and a Funeral director Mike Newell set to executive produce.
A story by Okereke set between London and Provincetown in the U.S., This Modern Love — also the name of a Bloc Party song — is a culture clash comedy about two gay men about to get married, who suddenly have to navigate their families’ interference during a well-meaning trip ahead of their wedding. Independent Entertainment will finance the project’s development.
The project was acquired by Independent’s sales and acquisitions manager, Jordan Allwood. Ryan Bennett from PaperEpic will produce alongside Independent’s Luc Roeg and Cora Palfrey. Newell will executive producer,...

Warner Bros Discovery has finally nailed down plans to go the Fast route. Last year — in between an intense bout of cancellations and titles being pulled from their streaming home on HBO Max — the company announced plans to explore a free ad-supported television option (Fast). During the company's third-quarter earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav made a point of saying that there's "a huge amount of content that's not even on [HBO Max/Discovery+] that's sitting with us that hasn't been put to monetize in the marketplace." In the spirit of cashing in, a new plan has been enacted. Over the next few months, 14 Warner Bros. branded Fast channels will arrive on Roku and Tubi.
Have you been longing to return to the days of cable television, with free TV shows being regularly interrupted by ads? Don't bother answering, because it's happening either way! The new Warner Bros Fast channels will feature popular titles including "Westworld,...

Having absolutely nothing to do with the Tina Turner biopic of the same name (minus the question mark), What’s Love Got To Do With It? serves as a master class in how to adhere faithfully to the classic romantic-comedy template and yet still emerge with something that delivers delightfully on both sides of the hyphen.
Serving as the first foray into the rom-com arena for filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, of Elizabeth and Bandit Queen renown, the effervescent cross-culture confection may not be the first to examine the practice of arranged marriage in the age of Tinder, but Kapur’s soulful touch, working from a knowing script by Jemima Khan, hits all the desired marks.
Top it off with a lovely lead performance by Lily James and a bitingly funny one by Emma Thompson, and you’ve got the type of world premiere TIFF entry...

At first, Hulu’s “Wedding Season” seems to be a charming enough take on a British “Four Weddings and a Funeral”-style romantic comedy, complete with a hopeless romantic boy, his boisterous friend group, and the enigmatic American girl he falls for the minute he meets her at — where else? — a wedding. But both Oliver Lyttelton’s take on the setup and the American at its center have more up their sleeves than a charming meet-cute. The second that initial layer’s peeled, “Wedding Season” (not to be confused with Netflix’s recent movie of the same name) is off and running in another direction entirely — a murder mystery with roots in the kind of deep corruption that would give Jason Bourne nightmares. Whether or not it all hangs together will be for the audience to decide, with all eight episodes out Sept. 8 on Hulu (but only seven made available...

When the world met Mindy Kaling on The Office, her status as a TV power player was yet to come. In the US spin-off of the British sitcom, Kaling played Kelly Kapoor, an optimistic, man-crazy customer service operative. Even though she was a supporting character, Kelly’s scenes always sparkled and provide meme fodder even today. “My resolution was to get more attention,” she quipped in a season seven scene, one of many examples of her causing a fuss in order to get her way.
But while Kelly made us laugh on screen, Kaling was honing her comic skills behind the scenes as a writer – when the show’s staff were hired in 2004, Kaling was the only woman and sole person of colour in an eight-person writers’ room. “The way that writers’ rooms look now versus when I started at The Office in 2004 is night and day,” she told Variety in 2019. Now,...

ITV Studios has struck an exclusive formats deal with longstanding Polish production partner Jake Vision. The agreements sees the latter take exclusive production rights to all non-scripted ITV Studios formats commissioned in the Eastern European country going forwards.
The pair already has an existing relationship, with Jake Vision producing the Polish version of Love Island, Hell’s Kitchen and Four Weddings. In most territories, ITV Studios has its own production assets but has taken the partnership route in Poland.
Arjan Pomper, Managing Director of Global Entertainment for ITV Studios said: “We are delighted that we have aligned with Jake Vision as our strategic production partner in Poland. The agreement forges international IP with outstanding local production capabilities, at a time when the demand for non-scripted productions in the territory is growing.
