George Clooney will receive the Cinema Audio Society’s Filmmaker Award during the virtual 57th annual Cas Awards ceremony on April 17.
“George embodies a strength of character that not only shows in the integrity and preeminence of his works but in the way he regards and is regarded by his creative teams and collaborators,” said Cas president Karol Urban. “In such a time of uncertainty, his hardworking, innovative, and generous demeanor and body of exceptional films and television projects makes him an especially exemplary filmmaker for 2020.”
Clooney is a two-time Oscar winner for producing Best Picture winner Argo (2012) and starring in Syriana (2005). He also has amassed a half-dozen other Academy Award noms: Best Actor for The Descendants, Up in the Air and Michael Clayton; Adapted Screenplay for The Ides of March; and Original Screenplay and Best Director for Good Night, and Good Luck. When brothers Jake and Conor Allyn were growing up, they had something of an unusual family tradition.
Whenever they would go to the movies, their dad, Rob, had a tendency to choose something that wasn’t exactly age-appropriate for his young kids.
That’s how Jake came to perform a monologue from “Braveheart” in his elementary school talent show while the other students were singing along to Aaron Carter songs.
Child-friendly or not, the Mel Gibson epic that easily earned its R-rating instilled in the siblings a deep love of movies and inspired them to start making their own homemade films. As kids, they borrowed their parent’s camcorder to capture footage around the block. They even got savvy with special effects, setting off their own fireworks for dramatic flair.
Nearly two decades later, Jake, 30, and Conor, 34, are still making what they refer to as personal home videos. The only difference?...

George Clooney has a relatively simple answer when asked by Den of Geek what inspired him to make his first science fiction film as a director, The Midnight Sky.
“I thought I had a take on it, you know?” says Clooney, who also stars in his seventh outing behind the camera. “I felt like there was a story that I understood in a way about what we’re capable of doing to one another if we don’t pay attention, if we don’t listen to science, if we don’t pay attention to divisions and hatred and pay that forward. I thought I had an understanding of that.”
We’re speaking with Clooney via Zoom, of course, in the ninth month of the never-ending Covid-19 pandemic, and after briefly commiserating about the last time we saw our parents, we turn to the film, which is based on a novel...

Since the release of Gravity in 2013, George Clooney has been in quite the acting slump, with Brad Bird’s severely underrated Tomorrowland as the lone bright spot. Scan his IMDb page and he appears to have made more Nespresso-funded short films than studio features, albeit for altruistic causes. The directorial projects have been even direr, a far cry from the glory days of Good Night and Good Luck and The Ides of March.
Considering its pandering weightiness and saccharine heart, Clooney’s The Midnight Sky feels like a blatant attempt to get back in the good graces of unadventurous critics and Oscar voters. Adapted from the novel Good Morning, Midnight by co-screenwriter Lily Brooks-Dalton, it envisions our planet’s last gasp through the glassy, sad eyes of world-renowned scientist Augustine Lofthouse (Clooney). Afflicted with a mortal ailment, he has decided to stay on Earth while what’s left of...

Until until now, George Clooney’s efforts as a director have stayed firmly planted on Earth, with the stories that attract him being either inspired by true events or tapped directly into the zeitgeist (The Ides of March). With The Midnight Sky, Clooney not only expands his horizons as a filmmaker, literally, but he also takes a giant leap into the speculative. In the process, he’s made a film that doesn’t always hang together, yet it ends up as possibly his most moving feature to date.
To be sure, Clooney’s track record as a director is also significantly uneven: the two films mentioned above are easily the best of the seven he’s helmed. Others, such as The Monuments Men and the almost unwatchable Suburbicon, have been muddled and unfocused affairs. The Midnight Sky falls in the middle of the pack. It’s his first direct attempt at helming science fiction,...

I was curious. What exciting trends would I notice when watching (and re-watching) through all 185 out of 192 available entries—including the top ten finalists I’ve reviewed in Part 1. Especially considering the restricted movement order (Rmo) that gave rise to this competition, will also limit a lot of things. Almost every short movie below can be described as: Character(s) in a residence/safe space gets haunted/goes crazy/killed.
In broad strokes, that’s the set-up of almost all horror. The bread and butter of the genre. From the mundane world, you’ll be brought to the horrifying world, or pointing out how frightening the ordinary can be.

George Clooney has a unique distinction when it comes to Oscar history. The multi-faceted filmmaker and star has been nominated for Academy Awards in an impressive six different categories, a rare feat that includes for Best Picture (Argo), Actor, Supporting Actor (Syriana), Director, Adapted Screenplay (The Ides of March) and Original Screenplay. He has won twice, as a producer on Argo (2012) and Supporting Actor in Syriana (2005). He could well find himself in contention in many of these categories again for his latest film, The Midnight Sky, which Netflix will launch on December 23 — his first movie project made for the streaming giant.

During a virtual screen talk today at the 64th BFI London Film Festival, George Clooney discussed the importance of journalistic integrity, the Covid-19 pandemic, his upcoming Netflix film, The Midnight Sky, and the highlights of his illustrious career.
Throughout the hour-long conversation with Scottish broadcaster Edith Bowman, which centered on a selection of his iconic films—including Out of Sight, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Good Night, and Good Luck—a prevailing theme was the importance of kindness, and of speaking truth to power, in today’s world.

Worthy movies such as Dark Waters used to be the toast of Hollywood. But is the audience for them drying up?
Dark Waters must be the least Todd Haynes film Todd Haynes has ever made. Based on the true story of a corporate lawyer (played by Mark Ruffalo) who switches sides to expose pollution by the DuPont chemical company, it is powerful and creditable, but does not feel like the work of the man who gave us the lush, stylised likes of Carol and Far from Heaven. It feels more like an Oscar-bait issue movie in the mould of Erin Brockovich. Except with Dark Waters, the awards panels didn’t bite and neither, going by Us box-office numbers, have the public. The formula has stopped working, but the films keep coming.
Which is why we need to talk about Participant Media. Participant was founded in 2004 by eBay billionaire Jeff Skoll...

The European co-production took away top honours at the latest edition of the biggest short-film festival in the world. At this year’s edition of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the Belgian-Ghanaian co-production Da Yie [Good Night] has won the International Grand Prix. Anthony Nti’s film follows the fortunes of two young Ghanaian children who become enthralled by a foreigner who treats them to luxuries that are usually far out of their reach. But he has an ulterior motive – will he go through with his plan, or will these two youngsters convince him to change his mind? With a social-realist aesthetic, all handheld camera and nervous energy, and some fine performances from a young cast, the film should go on to greater visibility after its Clermont win, having previously screened at Belgian festivals such as Leuven and Gent. The Clermont-Ferrand candidate for the European Film Awards was the Portuguese-French.

The entry of local conglomerate Lippo Group and Korea’s Cj Cgv into Indonesian exhibition looks set to shake up a market that has huge potential but has so far failed to grow.
The Riady family’s Lippo Group is planning to build 1,000 screens over five years across the country under its Cinemaxx brand – initially focusing on second and third tier cities before moving into major metropolises such as Jakarta.
The huge conglomerate – which has interests in retail, media, real estate, hospitality and healthcare – is well placed to expand Indonesia’s exhibition infrastructure as it owns shopping malls and has the deep pockets and political connections necessary for the job.
In recent months it has been signing deals with technology providers such as Masterimage 3D, Dolby Atmos, Gdc and Barco and is also developing its own giant screen brand MegaMaxx. “Our goal is to offer state-of-the-art technology with first-class amenities,” said Cinemaxx...

Kellan Lutz ‘The Legend of Hercules’: New Summit release has 0% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating (photo: Gaia Weiss and shirtless Kellan Lutz in ‘The Legend of Hercules’) Starring Kellan Lutz, best known as the hunky and likable vampire Emmett in the Twilight movies, The Legend of Hercules opens today, January 10, 2014, in North America. That’s the good news for Kellan Lutz fans. Now, the bad news: The Legend of Hercules isn’t about to become the next Spartacus — or even the next Gladiator. “The only thing epic about The Legend of Hercules is what a failure it is,” writes Stephanie Merry in the Washington Post, while Newsday‘s Rafer Guzman’s complains that “this painfully feeble version of the strongman story fails on every level, from Lutz’s wooden acting to the styrofoam special effects.” In fact, out of 35 reviews, the Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate Pictures release has a 0% approval rating...

I don't particularly understand Kellan Lutz. He was in a douchey vampire film series. He was the worst thing about Generation Kill. I don't get it. In a world where impossibly better-looking (and far more talented) actors exists, I don't quite get the Lutz attraction. Why not spend that lust on dudes like James Van Der Beek or like, Paul Walker? Both pretty dudes who are infinitely better actors than Lutz.
Alright. Now that that's out of my system, lets talk about Java Heat. Mickey Rourke and Lutz face off in an international action thriller that's actually got some serious pop. Rourke is typically manic and intense and even though Java Heat isn't his finest hour, it's certainly not his worst. Lutz plays a shady agent tracking down a terrorist (Rourke) while being tailed by Java police officials. Its a tight flick, punchy and aggressive, a smart take on a tired narrative.

After the suicide bombing of a party in Indonesia, American Marine/FBI agent Jake Travers (Lutz), posing as a grad student, is bent on vengeance but quickly finds that the world’s problems can’t be solved with violence alone. He teams with a Muslim cop Hashim (Bayu) to hunt down a dangerous international jewel thief – with ties to Indonesian terrorists – Malik (Rourke), who has used the explosion as a cover to kidnap a Sultan’s daughter, Sultana (Hasiholan), in a plot to steal the royal treasury.
Following in the footsteps of Taylor Lautner, another Twilight alumni, Kellan Lutz, tries his hand at action movies with Java Heat – a sweat filled thriller that does nothing to stand out from the action movie crowd.

Taormina, Sicily – Jeremy Irons stole the show at the Taormina Film Festival Wednesday, after a meandering and well-received Tao Class discourse for local students, journalists, and other onlookers and then a Teatro Antico prize ceremony in which he playfully wagged his finger at previous presenters whose slow-moving remarks pushed the start of the evening’s main screening, crime drama Java Heat, more than an hour behind schedule. Irons, 64, was at the festival in connection with Trashed, a documentary he produced and starred in, about the worldwide problem of waste. The film, Irons’ debut as a producer, screened

I believe Mickey Rourke to be one of the greatest actors of his generation. Thought to be the second coming of Brando in the 1980s, he turned in incendiary performances in such films as The Pope of Greenwich Village, Diner and Barfly. His career – and physical appearance – suffered a major setback in the ’90s, forcing him to take roles in lesser movies until his salvation appeared to have come in the form of his Oscar-nominated performance in The Wrestler. His appearance, therefore, in Conor Allyn’s messy Java Heat is especially sad because he did not coast on the success of that performance but rather backslid into roles not meriting his talent. Java Heat is a complete waste of Rourke, as he phones it in as French-accented terrorist, inexplicably named Malik, who is up against American FBI Agent/Marine Jake (Kellan Lutz) and Indonesian cop Hashim (Ario Bayu) in the quest to recover the kidnapped Sultana of...

Java Heat's title refers not to hot coffee but to the Indonesian island, though caffeine is certainly recommended to make it through this tepid buddy-cop action flick. In Java, American Jake Travers (Kellan Lutz) is questioned about the bombing death of the nation's sultana by local officer Hashim (Ario Bayu), who quickly deduces that self-professed teaching assistant Jake is in fact a covert spy. When not trading tiresome barbs—many about militaristic Americans, replete with both men quoting Rambo—the duo discover that the sultana isn't dead; rather, she's the prisoner of a globe-trotting psychopath named Malik (Mickey Rourke), who plans faux-terrorist bombings as distractions for his jewel and art heists. Cross-cultural understanding is achieved as the heroes...

May is a big month for Kellan Lutz as it not only sees two of his films (Java Heat and Syrup) debut, but he's hard at work on Tarzan, a motion-capture retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic story.
It's all part of Lutz's meticulously plotted career path, which will next see him slipping into the iconic role of Hercules.
ETonline caught up with Lutz to talk about each of those movies and trusting his gut, above all, when it comes to picking projects.
ETonline: What attracted you to Java Heat?
Kellan Lutz: The script. I really love action movies; I love being physical, I love being the hero. But there's not a lot of good ones that are well-written, so when I read Java Heat, it piqued my interest. I was excited to work with Conor Allyn [director/writer], who had such a great, clear vision. Plus we got to film in Indonesia, where I'd never...

Kellan Lutz, Mickey Rourke featured in new poster for Java Heat This is actually one of the most popular films we have in our database at the moment and tells of an American in Indonesia who joins forces with a Muslim cop in order to hunt down a terrorist. Connor Allyn, whom I must confess, I've never heard of before, but best of luck to him anyway, directs the film, as well as scripting alongside sibling (I assume) Rob Allyn. Also in the cast are Ario Bayu, Rio Dewanto, Uli Auliani, Mike Duncan and Atiqah Hasiholan. IFC Films distributes the actioner from Margate House, in association with Im Global. Kellan Lutz is lucky he'll be starring in "Hercules 3D," because based on the first trailer for "Java Heat," we're not sure this is the movie that will launch Lutz's career as a leading man. Kellan Lutz's latest film, "Java Heat," hits Video On Demand on May 10, and a new trailer for the flick has been unveiled this week. Lutz, who recently nabbed the leading role in "Hercules 3D," did a lot of his own stunt work for the movie. On Friday, he appeared on "Good Morning Texas" in support of the film's upcoming release and talked about his excitement over all the throwback super hero work he's been scoring lately. "I love mythology, and when you're growing up in the mid-west, you just have the literature to read and you fantasize, and we had the animals to dress up, and you feel like Mowgli from 'The Jungle Book' or even Tarzan or Hercules," he said, calling the "Hercules" gig a "dream project." The interviewer asked Lutz whether it's a help or a hindrance to have been associated with the "Twilight Saga,...

A reckless American bad boy who doesn’t play by the rules? An exotic locale with a quip-delivering partner? Lots of bullets flying with little consequence? Java Heat has it all — including the cherry on top: Mickey Rourke being a crazy bad guy. In the film, a terrorist attack leaves the Sultana of Indonesia dead and his daughter kidnapped. Jake (Kellan Lutz) struggles to produce complete sentences while trying to solve the case alongside Hashim (Ario Bayu) who doesn’t think Jake has enough clever comebacks to be a real policeman. But seriously, you should watch the trailer just to try to understand why Lutz has trouble saying his lines. It’s baffling: Even the title is perfect. It’s a parody that isn’t a parody. Java Heat hits theaters May 10th.

Conor Allyn’s Indonesia terrorist actioner “Java Heat” is notable for a couple of reasons. One: it stars Kellan Lutz, who just landed the lead in former “Die Hard 2″ director Renny Harlin’s “Hercules 3D” movie. Two: it stars Mickey Rourke as a psycho (doing some weird accent, to boot) blowing things up. Now that’s what I call entertainment! Check out the first trailer for Allyn’s “Java Heat”, which finds Lutz (formerly of “Twilight” fame) doing his very best John McClane impersonation. Now I gotta admit, all I know about Lutz is from “Twilight” and “Immortals”, but the kid looks like he’s got some chops as an actor and a potential action star. I could be wrong, of course, but he looks pretty decent in this trailer. After terrorist attack rocks Indonesia and kills the country’s much beloved Sultana and her daughter is kidnapped, Jake,...
