Warning: In case the headline didn't give it away, this article contains major spoilers for "The Watchers."
Stop me if you've heard this one before: There's a new horror movie directed by a filmmaker with the last name Shyamalan that's about creepy (and possibly supernatural) threats in the middle of a secluded forest ... and, yes, there's a big plot twist hiding in plain sight. Reactions thus far have been rather divisive, as you can see from my rather mixed review for /Film, and the sense of atmosphere and tone certainly feel consistent with someone who received their film-school crash course while serving as a second-unit director on M. Night Shyamalan's 2021 film "Old" and a director on several episodes of his streaming series "Servant," but that's pretty much where the similarities between father and daughter end.
Ishana Night Shyamalan's debut feature "The Watchers" is very much abiding by its own rules entirely.

“It’s just a thrill a minute,” filmmaker Chris Nash is quick to joke of his debut feature, “In a Violent Nature.”
“We made this movie with an audience of maybe five people in mind. So having anybody like it and endure the walking and just the pace of the film, it’s been a testament to the patience of an audience,” he said.
Nash cuts himself short — a metaphor made more apt when you’ve seen just how creative the filmmaker can be with a paralyzed victim and a well-placed log splitter. The extra gutsy first-time feature writer/director and his star Ry Barrett spoke with IndieWire in April at The Overlook Film Festival. That’s an annual horror event in Louisiana, where Nash’s spellbinding slasher deconstruction for IFC Films and Shudder screened for the second time after making its world premiere at Sundance. “In a Violent Nature...

The world of Disney has never once disappointed when it comes to musicals. With sprawling tales of epic love stories and star-crossed lovers finding their way to each other, the studio has never once failed to craft a saga that doesn’t bring a tear or two to the eye. Fairy tales like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty gave way to more ambitious adaptations such as Aladdin and Pocahontas.
Aladdin (1992) [Credit: Walt Disney Pictures]However, without original creations to fill the void left behind by such age-old mythologies, a dozen different adaptations of the same story would mark the downfall of an industry that runs on selling love, hope, and eternity. Now, word through the grapevine suggests that the studio is set on fixing the error of its ways by bringing a new princess into the scene as soon as possible.

His Oscar-nominated 2008 documentary Food, Inc exposed the horrors of industrial agriculture in the US. Now, a sequel shows that the corporate behemoths have no intention of loosening their grip
In the middle of Food, Inc 2 – the follow-up documentary to 2008’s Food, Inc, narrated by Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser – scientists share what they have recently discovered about ultra-processed foods (UPFs). They are not just bad for you in a trashy, empty-calories kind of way; they interfere with the brain and the body’s ability to process food; they mess with you on a cellular level. Whole populations are seeing health deteriorate, profoundly, for no purpose beyond profit. It must be annoying, I suggest to Pollan, 69, to hear scientists deliver this as a discovery. He been warning against processed food for decades.
Pollan’s mantra – “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants” – was immortalised in his 2008 book In Defence of Food.

If you’re going to share a whole life story, you’d better be a marvelous storyteller. That’s the challenge facing the playwrights—and the actors—in a pair of plays putting down roots this week, a Broadway revival of Samm-Art Williams’s Home and Atlantic Theater Company’s world premiere of Shayan Lotfi’s What Became of Us. Each play takes an interest in poeticizing, through narration, the cradle-to-geriatric journey of so-called ordinary American lives.
In Home, which originated with the Negro Ensemble Company in 1979 before transferring to Broadway (and receiving a 1980 Tony nomination for best play), Cephus Miles (Tory Kittles) doesn’t dream much further than his native land of Cross Roads, North Carolina, “a soil to raise strong children on.” It’s a vision of the future that Cephus’s childhood sweetheart, Pattie Mae (Brittany Inge), swiftly dismisses once she’s been away to...

The comic book The Boys was created through the pioneering efforts of authors Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson who turned a hugely popular genre on its head with their bold satirical take on superheroes. While these characters were viewed as Gods and revered for their impeccable abilities and qualities that they used for good, The Boys dealt with equally powerful heroes who abuse these powers.

The 2019 show developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime became an instant hit, and had fans completely invested in these deliciously diabolical characters. Interestingly, the series which was also meant to take a lighthearted dig at Marvel and DC, has become a cult franchise in itself. With Season 4 due to release soon and Season 5 on the way, Kripke was fully aware that meticulous planning was now required to maintain the reputation of the show.

Experimental slasher In a Violent Nature, writer/director Chris Nash’s feature debut, sliced up an impressive opening weekend at the box office and received critical acclaim for its unique take on the slasher subgenre. But there’s one standout moment that has horror fans buzzing: a centerpiece kill so unexpected and gnarly that it ensures undead killer Johnny (Ry Barrett) is a slasher villain to remember.
In a Violent Nature frames the slasher events from the perspective of Johnny, summoned from the dead when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs his rotting corpse. In a recent chat, Chris Nash and Ry Barrett revealed just how tough this experimental slasher was to make, with Barrett joining the cast well into production, prompting extensive reshoots. That also applies to the aforementioned kill, which is best described as a “yoga pretzel.”

The recent trend of adapting video games into TV series, especially animated series, has become quite popular. And one of the main reasons for this was Arcane, a Netflix animated series based on the popular game League of Legends by Riot Games. Arcane is one of the most successful animated series Netflix has ever produced.

The series follows the story of sisters Vi and Jinx, who are trying to survive in the fantasy cities of Piltover, filled with the rich and fulfilled, and Zaun, whose residents are the oppressed and the poor, who survive on scraps. Disney seems to be in the mood to bring back their audiences to the cinema. Their next animated film from Pixar Inside Out 2 is reportedly all set to have an exclusive 100-day theatrical window before it debuts on streaming. The president of Pixar recently mentioned that the company wants to re-train audiences from expecting the films at home sooner.
This would be the highest theatrical window for Pixar in the recent past as their post-pandemic releases Lightyear and Elemental had shorter windows. The animation studio released three of their most anticipated films on Disney Plus during the pandemic, which they reportedly hope to move away from.

One was born with partial facial paralysis. The other grew up speaking Austrian-accented German, eventually transitioning to German-accented English.
If you were trying to concoct the archetypal Hollywood star in a lab, it wouldn’t be Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yet for more than 20 years they dominated the box office, their wattage rivaled only by the klieg lights of a movie premiere.
The improbable origins and unlikely rise of these two action icons are told in a couple of documentaries in Emmy contention: the feature Sly, directed by Thom Zimny, and the docuseries Arnold, directed by Lesley Chilcott.
“[EP] Allen Hughes brought the Arnold project to me,” Chilcott explains. “At first I said, ‘What don’t we already know?’ And he said, ‘I said the same thing myself.’ But then I started thinking about how weird and unusual it is that Arnold’s been successful in so many completely different areas.

Over the years, Matt Damon has turned into one of the biggest names in Hollywood. He was the protagonist of his own film series, has been in many Oscar-winning projects, has been nominated for the award five times himself, and even won once. It is safe to say that he is one of the most talented, respected, and recognized actors in the film industry.

While he has come to be known through these adjectives, he was also once a lesser-known actor. Every A-list star had to start somewhere, and many years ago, Damon worked as an extra in a Kevin Costner film alongside his long-time friend, Ben Affleck.
During a recent interview, Jimmy Kimmel told Costner exactly what was going through his mind when he was working with him for the first time.

The Canadian slasher film In A Violent Nature was known for its reinvention of a familiar horror trope. Directed by Chris Nash, the ‘ambient horror’ film follows a killer in the rural parts of Ontario who targets a group of teens who come to spend their summer in camping in the woods. The film seems to have added a new visual language to the usual premise.
In A Violent Nature had its premiere at the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Many critics praised its unique filmmaking twist to the slasher genre. However, despite the love from critics, the film seems to have not impressed audiences as its Rotten Tomatoes audience score was reportedly lesser than the critics’ score.

Roberta Torre with Anne-Katrin Titze on Gitt Magrini, Michelangelo Antonioni’s costume designer for Red Desert and with Bice Brichetto for L'Eclisse: “With Massimo Cantini Parrini we have thought a lot about this before making the film. So he went to all the beautiful costumes for Monica Vitti to see what remains today.”
A little over an hour and a half into Michelangelo Antonioni’s Red Desert, Monica Vitti’s Giuliana visits Richard Harris’s Corrado Zeller at his hotel. “Mi fanno male i capelli” she says, her hair hurts, as do her eyes, her throat and her mouth. Roberta Torre’s Mi Fanno Male I Capelli with a score by Wong Kar Wai’s longtime composer Shigeru Umebayashi takes the sentence as a starting point to investigate time and the mind, memory and the fluidity of identity.

New Line Cinema is developing a sequel to the 2019 romantic comedy Isn’t It Romantic, but what’s interesting about the follow-up film is that it’s set to poke fun at… horror tropes?
Titled Isn’t It Scary, the upcoming sequel to the Rebel Wilson-starring comedy was announced by Deadline this week, with April Prosser (Look Both Ways) writing the script.
It’s interesting to note that Isn’t It Romantic, which poked fun at rom-com tropes, was directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, known to horror fans as the director of The Final Girls (2015). So maybe it’s not such a stretch that the franchise is dipping its toes into horror. That being said, Deadline’s report doesn’t mention whether or not Strauss-Schulson will return to direct.
In Isn’t It Romantic, which also starred Liam Hemsworth and Betty Gilpin, “A young woman disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy.

When In A Violent Nature was first revealed to the world at Sundance, I was giddy with anticipation. As a massive slasher fan, I’ve always wanted a slasher seen through the lens of the killer. There are limitless possibilities and could provide the right spark to reinvent the whole subgenre. At least, that’s what I’ve always believed. But the reaction to the film was mixed, with our own Chris Bumbray giving the film a 6/10. I agree with his assessment, as the film doesn’t entirely come together like I’d want it to. It seems as though the goal was to make a Gus Van Sant film versus to make something that respected and subverted the types of slashers that came before it. Instead, it’s a rather lame affair with more bad acting than you know what to do with.

Baldur’s Gate 3 impressed a lot of people upon its release. It created a special place in the hearts of players, standing out and winning the Game of the Year in 2023, alongside some great titles, like, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Starfield, and many more. However, this Mmorpg game failed to impress in making the movement mechanics free of any flaws. It’s high time now that Larian Studios addresses this one flaw that is ruining the experience of players.

In a Violent Nature will release to theaters on May 31, 2024.
Horror is my favorite genre of film, and slasher is my favorite sub-genre of horror. I’m always on the look out for a new entry. It’s a genre that’s clichéd by nature, leaning into the familiarity and tropes that have been established and followed for decades. So, when I heard about a new slasher film out of Sundance that followed the perspective of the killer, I was all in.
In a Violent Nature Plot 2024’s ‘In a Violent Nature’
A large malevolent being known as Johnny rises from the grave and begins to stalk and brutally murder anybody he stumbles upon.
The Critique
It’s difficult to break new ground within the slasher-genre. Jason Voorhees is arguably the top-dog in that realm, beating and mutilating promiscuous teenagers throughout the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. The quality of those films range wildly,...

Have you ever wanted to see a Friday the 13th movie from Jason Voorhees‘ perspective? What if instead of following around a group of sex-crazed college kids you were just riding shotgun with the killer during his gory rampage through the cursed campground? Well good news you sick, twisted maniac! Chris Nash’s In A Violent Nature is exactly that- A gory forest bound slasher told (almost) exclusively through the eyes of a masked madman back from the dead to seek revenge.
After a group of campers steal a gold locket from a collapsed fire tower, they find themselves hunted by Johnny, the boogeyman of this particular backwoods area. He wants his locket back, and he’ll stop at nothing until it’s in his cold, dead hands again. So, while they smoke pot and drink, tell campfire stories and hook up, Johnny sloooowly makes his way to their camp,...

Writer-director Chris Nash’s feature directorial debut, In a Violent Nature, opens in eerie serenity, with a gorgeously layered image of a forest seen through a deteriorated window frame. Birdsong and gentle breezes take aural precedence, though there are off-screen human voices of an evidently teen-to-twentysomething variety that clash discordantly with all the verdant beauty. Big mistake, as evidenced by the psychotic demon that soon emerges from the peaty earth below.

We’re quite used to thinking that all the horror movies with zombies wandering around in there are something that dwells on a very unrealistic perspective of the world’s biggest disaster, yet few of them still put a much bigger meaning into a seemingly trivial story about the walking dead.
Though it has no chances to ever enter Amazon Prime’s top with all the fierce competition guaranteed by brand new flicks and shows, a 2013 BBC supernatural drama series In the Flesh is an unfairly forgotten horror the storyline of which goes far beyond mere survival among zombies.
How Exactly Does In The Flesh Stand Out?
Taking place in some kind of alternate universe, In the Flesh follows a zombie teenager Kieren Walker, portrayed by Luke Newberry, who is all of a sudden rejected by his family that presumably pronounced him officially dead after he passed away in 2009, but...
