Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Saltburn,” in theaters now.
In 2006, I was an English major at Oxford alongside “Saltburn” director Emerald Fennell. While there was a peripheral overlap in our social circles, as far as I remember we never officially met. Like the protagonists in her new film, we existed in the same orbit but our experiences at Oxford could not have been further apart.
So I wasn’t entirely surprised to see Fennell’s dark satire get some flack since its release, particularly in the U.K., for failing to adequately skewer the upper classes while depicting scholarship kid Oliver Quick (played by Barry Keoghan) as a vampiric con artist. His mark, the blue-blooded Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), is kind-hearted and guileless, a cross between Princess Diana and Harry Enfield’s comic creation Tim Nice But Dim.

It’s been 10 years since a shirtless Sam Claflin first stole hearts as the charismatic District 4 victor Finnick Odair in 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”
In a conversation with Variety about his upcoming Prime Video series, “Daisy Jones & the Six,” Claflin reflected on the films at length. “It still feels like yesterday…the filming experience of that was just an absolute dream,” he said, beaming as he recalled filming in Hawaii alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson.
It wasn’t all easy, though. The actor faced backlash at the time of his casting: “‘You were so wrong for this.’ ‘They should have cast this person or this person, not you,’” Claflin remembers hearing when he was selected for the beloved role. His attitude? “Okay, I’m gonna prove you wrong!”
He did just that, cementing Finnick as a fan-favorite, not just in Suzanne Collins’ books, but on the screen.

Sam Claflin was preparing to audition for the role of Billy Dunne in “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the Prime Video adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel about a fictional 1970s rock band, he was told he’d have to sing a ’70s rock song. The trouble was, Claflin, a U.K.-born actor who admits music has never been his thing, didn’t know any. So he scoured the Apple Music app for a genre playlist and chose the only track he felt comfortable with.
“I went into a recording studio for the first time in my life, confronted with a microphone and people watching me in a fishbowl,” Claflin says. “I sang Elton John’s ‘Your Song.’ Terribly.”

It's easy to be dismissive of "Spice World," the 1997 musical comedy about the global musical sensation, the Spice Girls. While the movie has seen some critical reappraisal in recent years, there are still other critics who disregard the film as a frivolous, pointless mess. "Spice World" is far from pointless; some people just missed the point. "Spice World" screenwriter Kim Fuller, brother of British music super-producer Simon Fuller, based his script on the Beatles' 1964 film "A Hard Day's Night," and "Spice World" is a subversive riff that's so much smarter than people give it credit for.
When "Spice World" hit theaters, the band was at the height of their popularity. Their debut album, "Spice," had soared to the top of the Billboard Top 100 and stayed there as their CDs and cassette tapes flew off the shelves. They were an international powerhouse, preaching "girl power" and rocking platform shoes and skin-tight outfits.

Since her Sundance hit An Education in 2009, Denmark’s Lone Scherfig has become something of an honorary Brit, specializing in prestige adaptations of best-selling English novels. Surprisingly, none of these ever quite tipped in the way An Education did, and after a mixed reaction to One Day (2011), which mostly rounded on Anne Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent rather than her performance, Scherfig’s first real attempt to tap into the American market — 2019’s The Kindness Of Strangers — was an uncharacteristic misfire and pretty much vanished into the ether after opening the Berlinale that year.
It would be tempting, then, to see The Shift, Scherfig’s debut as a series showrunner, as a palate cleanser. True, the series, which is screening in the Berlin Film Festival’s Berlinale Series strand, is closer to her 2000 breakout ensemble comedy-drama Italian For Beginners,...

This originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year as the opening night film, and is getting a small Us release on Valentine's Day coming up. The ensemble drama is one of those films where various characters around a city eventually all come together. The main character is a young woman named Clara, played by Zoe Kazan, who takes her kids and runs away from an abusive husband who also happens to be a cop. She finds solace in "the kindness of strangers", staying at a shelter and at a church while she tries to figure out what to do. BBC has released the first trailer for their upcoming adaptation of Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders. The three-part limited series stars John Malkovich in the role of Hercule Poirot and Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) as Inspector Crome.
The series looks really good. Malkovich adds his own interesting flavor to the character Hercule Poirot, and I like it.
The story is set in the 1930's, which is "a time when the nation is dangerously divided, with suspicion and hatred on the rise. In the midst of this tension, Poirot faces a serial killer known only as ‘A.B.C.’ First the killer strikes in Andover, then Bexhill. As the murder count rises, the only clue is the copy of the ABC Railway Guide at each crime scene. Poirot’s investigations are thwarted at every turn by an enemy determined to outsmart him. If the detective is to match his nemesis, then everything...

Here's our first look at John Malkovich in the role of Hercule Poirot in BBC's upcoming adaptation of Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders. As you can see, he's dialed back on the look of the character and isn't going for the over-exaggerated version that we've seen in recent depictions like Kenneth Branagh in Murder on the Orient Express.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This stilted, utterly implausible film manages the astonishing feat of being both histrionic and monotonous at the same time, trolling us with absurd clichés, yet doing so with a quiet solemnity. I’m “biast” (pro): love Saoirse Ronan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
I’m reasonably certain that there actually is genuinely moving and authentically tragic drama to be found in the story of the wedding night of two virgins that goes so catastrophically wrong that it ruins their marriage and haunts them for the rest of their lives. But On Chesil Beach is not it. Oh my goodness, but this stilted, utterly implausible film manages the astonishing feat of being both histrionic and monotonous at the same time,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… An ostensible fairy tale of the creative life in London that tries too hard to be eccentric, while also trying too hard to be grounded and realistic. This is one of those idiosyncrasies that you really can’t have both ways. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women

Bella Brown, orphan of unusual circumstance, is, we are informed, “the oddest of oddballs.” Except she’s not very odd at all. She’s a pretty normal woman with a touch of Ocd, creative aspirations that she can’t seem to bring to fruition, and an inability to get to work on time. (Those might be unusual characteristics for women onscreen, but they are entirely mundane in the real world.

Apparently this was the way things were: Someone like Robin, paralyzed from the neck down and utterly dependent on a respirator, was expected to simply lie in a hospital bed for the rest of his life, presumed to be no more than a few months anyway. In 1970’s Manchester, Steven Morrissey (Jack Lowden – Dunkirk, A United Kingdom, ’71), an introverted, uncompromising teenager, finds himself frustrated with his working-class existence.

Lone Scherfig’s “Their Finest” isn’t a biopic, but that doesn’t mean the World War II-set romantic drama isn’t true.
Adapted by Gabby Chiappe from Lissa Evans’ novel, “Their Finest Hour and a Half,” Scherfig’s latest period piece traces a fictionalized heroine as she changes the face of England’s propaganda-film machine in the waning days of World War II. Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) isn’t a big dreamer — in war-torn London, no one is — but when she’s drafted into writing feel-good scripts for the Ministry of Information, she unexpectedly finds her calling.
“There were female scriptwriters at the time, but they weren’t credited,” Scherfig said. “They did write a lot, and the character is very loosely based on one of those.”
Scherfig, known for her early Dogme features and her breakout “An Education,” saw herself in both Catrin and in the character’s new and weird professional world.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Delightful dry and snarky satire on wartime propaganda, sharp feminist commentary, and a brilliant cast make this snappy historical dramedy a real corker. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast, love the period
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
London, 1940. At the height of the Blitz, the Ministry of Information, Film Division, brings in scriptwriter Catrin Cole (the always marvelous Gemma Arterton: The Girl with All the Gifts) to punch up the “slop” — you know, the girly stuff, the women’s dialogue — of its propaganda pictures. The ministry is particularly eager that one new film will appeal to Americans — and to American mothers and wives — and get them gung-ho to send their sons and husbands off to join the war in Europe. (That film is a very loosely...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A gripping précis of what Edward Snowden learned at the CIA and Nsa, why he went public, and why it matters. Entertaining yet also deeply unsettling. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Oliver Stone, and of Edward Snowden; love the cast

Snowden opens in June 2013, as journalists Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo: London Has Fallen, The Big Short) and Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto: Star Trek Beyond, Hitman: Agent 47) first meet and interview, over several days, Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt: The Night Before, The Walk), in a hotel in Hong Kong. My first thought upon my second viewing this weekend of Oliver Stone’s (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, W.) gripping docudrama about these shocking real-life events is...

20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

Red Carpet Interviews: The 2017 Into Film Awards – Charles Dance, Amma Asante, Sophie Cookson & more
Author: Jon Lyus
Yesterday the 2017 Into Film Awards brought together some of the brightest new young filmmakers in the UK to celebrate their achievements, and promote the ongoing commitment to teaching film in schools. Many of the young filmmakers walked the red carpet before the ceremony, rubbing shoulders with some of our finest actors, directors and producers, and we were able to speak to many of them.
Eddie Redmayne, Daniel Craig, Amma Asante and Charles Dance were among those attending the event, and our collection of interviews are below. The great work Into Film undertakes to promote film education is second to none. Supported by the BFI and the National Lottery there is much to celebrate here, and we wish them well on their continuing adventure.

Here’s the premise: “With London emptied of its men now fighting at the Front, Catrin Cole (Arterton) is hired by the British Ministry as a ‘slop’ scriptwriter charged with bringing ‘a woman’s touch’ to morale-boosting propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by dashing movie producer Buckley (Claflin) whose path would never have crossed hers in peacetime. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and a colorful crew work furiously to...
